New: My Top Week 1 Games.......

Just started to really dig into the schedule this weekend and heere are what I feel are the top games for Week 1 of the IHSA Football season in 2024. I'll next narrow things down to a Top 5 then let you know which games i'm planning to cover in Week 1.

Prairie Ridge at Jacobs- Again I hate locked conferences...but this is a terrific Week 1 FVC matchup

St. Joseph Ogden at Monticello Two small school power programs with a ton of tradition here as well.

Hersey at Warren Township Hersey's top QB Colton Gumino tried to dent the always tough WTHS defense? Yes please.

Batavia at Glenbard West (Sat) The Hitters have two monster non con games in Batavia and Loyola.

Hope Academy at Wilmington Hope could be strong this fall and Wilmington is always strong.

Morgan Park at Marist The Mustangs have state title aspirations this fall and can Marist get back to form after a blip in 2023?

St Patrick at Niles Notre Dame HUGE rivalry game in Week 1....wow

Coal City at Morris Yes this is indeed the Hatfields against the McCoys in Will and Grundy County.

Edwardsville at Glenwood Great non conference game here as the Titans looks ready for a big season. Edwardsville also has state title aspirations in 2024.

Hinsdale Central at Naperville Central This has become an annual game and form good reasons....two very similar programs with a ton of talent and high expectations

Iowa City at Joliet Catholic The Hilltoppers schedule is no joke and Iowa City is a power program in Iowa.

Kankakee at Nazareth Academy Great Week 1 showdown and can Naz get out of ther gates quickly in 2024 and avoid late regular season drama for once :)

Lemont at Libertyville Anyone else remember when Lemont would open up against Little Flower? those days are long gone and Libertyville looks ready for a big 2024.

Benet Academy at Hillcrest Benet is seeking a good start and a win over the always talented Hillcrest Hawks would be huge.

Metamora at Sterling Talk about two major power programs in Class 5A here. Great teams great football towns squaring off.

Prospect at Lyons Township- Just an interesting matchup here on several levels.

Neuqua Valley at Oswego Local game here that is a great opening game that will tell us a lot about both teams here.

Lincoln Way West at Blue Island Eisenhower Ike is seeking a good start under a new head coach. West has a loaded roster with big expectations for 2024.

Providence Catholic at Wheaton North- Providence will be young but talented and Wheaton North is just always well coached and a hard nosed team.

Richards at Crete Monee Both have Class 6A playoff potential in 2024 and are both bringing back a ton of experience for this season.

Fenwick at OPRF Another local big time game and showdown that gets both sides fired up.

Sandburg at St Rita Sandburg HC Troy McAllister doesn't schedule St Rita unless he knows he has something to work with this summer. St Rita is always so good at home...

Maine South at Lincoln Way East- Best Week 1 game in the state?

Plainfield North at Lockport- North has a lot of weapons and speed. Lockport has numbers and a defense that can always hang with all comers.

The Hun School (New Jersey) at Chicago Mount Carmel- The Hun School is a traditional power in New Jersey and will not be a punching bag for a talented but less experienced Caravan.

Rochelle at Simeon @ Gately Stadium The Rockets get to experience Gately Dogs and a Wolverines team that has a ton of talent and speed.

SHG at Christian Brothers (St. Louis) Huge test for the Cyclones taking on St Louis arwea power CBC.

St Charles North at Palatine Just two very good programs squaring off here.

Sycamore vs DeKalb @ NIU This game is always a huge draw and rivalry game in the DeKalb area.

Loyola vs East St Louis at Illinois State (Sat) Best game in the state for Week 1?

Marian Central Catholic at Richmond Burton Two programs that are very close in distance and a game that's been highly anticipated for over a year.

Have others? List them and talk about it here.

Next: I'll narrow this down to My Top 5 Games and will also pick which games I'll cover.

CPL IS BACK BABY!!

It's opening week! That means one thing... HOT THURSDAY CPL ACTION!! And I am here for it. Sure, other teams play this Thursday, but we all know Thursday is for The Chicago Public League! On to the picks!

Catalyst Maria vs. Phoenix Academy
@Schwab54 has said for years that the Phoenix is always rising. I see no reason to disagree in this one. In all honesty, I'm looking forward to hitting the Steak n Egger across the street from Rockne Stadium before this one. Rockne dogs < Gately dogs, and you can take that to the bank.
Take Rising from the Ashes!

Chicago Vocational vs. Back of the Yards

Popped into a local adult beverage establishment the other day and got to talking to the guy behind the counter about the upcoming high school football season. Dude walks up behind us and starts talking Back of the Yards football. No kidding. Says he was working in the area and saw a bunch of summer practices. Said they look good. Of course I said, BOTY is always looking good. He, in turn, thought I was trying to change the subject and immediately started talking about another kind of adult establishment. Love the Big BOTY Energy!
Take Baby got BACK OF THE YARDS!

Kennedy vs Clemente

For the new people around here, Kennedy's mascot is the Crusaders. In short, that is silly. As a group we have decided that since the school is named after JFK the mascot should combine both the Cuban Missle Crisis and the Bay of Pigs... So Missle Pigs. I'm not into politics, but JFK's nephew has been in the news a lot recently. Seems reasonable to pick the Pigs.
Missle Pigs!

Whitney Young vs Corliss

No secret I like Corlissssssssssss. Also no secret that Whitney Young sounds like the girl in charge of a sorority rush at Alabama. Alabama could beat Corliss in football. Whitney Young can not.
SSSSSSSSSSSSnakes!

DRW vs Collins

Anyone else think that this sounds like a court case? The 42nd district court of appeals will be hearing DRW vs Collins in its next session. Just rolls off the tongue.
Judgement for Collins!

EDGY/Daily Herald: Underclassmen quarterbacks are in high demand

The Class of 2026 and 2027 quarterbacks might be one of the best ever in the State of Illinois from a overall number of high level talent at the position.

The New CS8.... 2024 Schedule

All.... And so it begins. The CS8 for football will have two divisions. Five in the division, two crossovers, and two non cons. If there are teams still available in the last category additional CS8 games may be scheduled. I only have a partial list and it's tenative. Take it with a grain of salt. Weeks 1 ,2, 8, and 9 work out. But some schools end up getting more home games then others in weeks 3 through 7. Not sure how that worked out. I threw this all together quickly. But it's a start.

Schools I could not find. QND, Rochester, and Southeast. One can cross reference on what is showing below to get a partial idea on those teams. The Raiders want to keep their week one non con game with Quincy. The Blue Devils schedule is showing QND for the next two years in week one. (A & H) QND has expressed interest in wanting to play Breese Mater Dei in week two. All games are Friday at 7pm unless noted. Ratsy

Edit- (12-29-2023) I have added in Southeast. But some of these schedules do not match up correctly. For instance when the schedule for two teams that are playing each other and both are being shown as a home game. Who is playing each other in the regular season looks to be pretty solid it's just this H & A that is being shown problems which I mentioned occur. Can't wait for the official Ihsa schedules to come out....

EDIT! - All schools and schedules in the CS8 completed....

Good Luck to all

Good Luck to all the teams this year who put a team on the field. I will as always miss teams like Kankakee Eastridge & Westview, Joliet East, Lincoln Way North, Rich East,Rich South & Rich Central & Bloom & Bloom Trail among many many others who no longer will be playing as such. And For Cross Bones I firmly believe The Brook will make the playoffs.

Give me your team’s Star, Stud, Sleeper and Soon

Happy New Year!!!

Star: Offensive Player to watch
Stud; Defensive Player to watch
Sleeper: Unsung Player, under the radar Player
Soon: Was going to make this category Soph but Juniors can be used so I called it Soon instead. Player we will hear about.

After watching my young St. Rita Mustangs Red and White Scrimmage, I came up with my list and was wondering about the rest of the state. So I pose the question to my Edgy Family. Who you got?

Star: SR RB Nick Herman Can he be St. Rita’s version of former Glenbard West Star Sam Brodner? Yeah, I went there with the comp.
JR WR Walter Jones Can he be St. Rita’s version of former Brother Rice Star Ricky Smalling. Yeah, I went there with the comp

Stud: ? Justin Buckner Put question mark at his position because he could/should be a BCS/FCS at 9 of the 11 defensive positions. Tweener status will hold back offers. Those that do would be wrong.

Sleeper: JR LB Owen Lynch. Can’t wait to see him along side 3 and a half year starter LB James Kingsbury. Middle of field D is in great hands

Soon: Sophs LT Mitch Street, DB Kyle Keyser, RB Brandon Johnson. Remember the names.

Don’t have to be as long-winded as me but I’m well-rested after taking the offseason off. But I’m back now. GIVE ME SOME NAMES TO WATCH!!! Thanks Fam!

Preseason Conference MVP?

Warren Township senior RB Aaron Stewart
- Aarion Stewart is a key player in the Blue Devils offense again this season. Stewart, who is also a state and national wrestling standout will again be asked to lead the Warren rushing attack, which should benefit with an improved passing game this fall.

Lake Zurich senior OL/DL Jacob Wilk- Wilk, who is verbally committed to Western Michigan is a talented and athletic big man who will also be asked to provide leadership and production for the Bears this fall.

Libertyville senior QB Quinn Schambow Libertyville has several key underclassmen to watch this season who are drawing recruiting attention, yet this team will kick things into high gear led by QB Quinn Schambow. Schambow, who ism also a college level baseball recruit has a strong and accurate arm as well as being a very strong overall athlete.

Lake Forest senior QB Danny Van Camp- Van Camp is another big kid (6-foot-4, 215 pounds) and impressive all around athlete for the Scouts who will again be asked to lead the Lake Forest offense this fall. Lake Forest has high expectations this season and if Van Camp can build upon a pretty strong 2023 season, the Scouts could be a dangerous team in 6A.

Mundelein senior OL/DL Dylan Coe Coe will be a nulti-year varsity starter who is also drawing steady recruiting looks and attention this summer. I fully expect Coe to play full time on both sides of the football this fall.

Sleeper Players to Watch?

Lake Zurich senior ATH Jackson Piggott
- Piggott is another multi-year starter and impact player for the Bears.

Warren Township senior QB Jack Wolf- Wolf is coming off a strong 2023 season and looks ready to take his game and the Blue Devils offense to a much higher level.

Toughest Overall Schedule?

Warren Township
- The Blue Devils and heaed coach Bryan McNulty do not play around when it comes to it's non conference schedule. The Blue Devils open the season hosting Hersey, then play at Swagger High and finish the season @ Stevenson vs Lake Zurich and @ Libertyville. That's legit.

Top 2024 North Suburban Conference Games?

Lake Forest at Stevenson
October 10th- The Scouts and the Patriots get a nice early conference showdown and a chance to see exactly where both programs are going for the remainder of the regular season.

Lake Zurich at Warren Township October 18th Another great North Sububran showdown that has been pretty much the top game in the league for the lst several years. Need proof? Ask the players and they will well you this is the game.

Warren Township @ Libertyville October 25th Best case scenario.....both have a shot at winning the conference title, a high playoff seed and 5-7000 crazed fans? I'm down with that.

North Suburban Conference Statement Game?

Warren Township @ Maine South
September 6th- No question this is the battrlw of two of the top Class 8A programs in the Northern suburbs. Yet another great early matchup of two programs who have the balls to play each other be damned the results. Kudos to both schools.

Preseason Conference MVP?

Maine South senior RB Michael Dellumo or QB Constantine Coines In my mind you can't go wrong either way. QB Constantine Coines was a backup to start the 2023 season but a first quarter injury made Coines the starter. Coines played well off the bench in a tight 10-7 loss to Brother Rice and basically rolled the remainder of the season. Dellumo is yet another quality back for the Hawks who will operate behind a very big and impressive offensive line this fall.

New Trier senior QB Patrick Heneghan- Heneghan will be a multi-year starter and leader for the Trevians. New Trier has a impressive skill set, is a fundamentally sound signal caller who just finds ways to win games. Love this kid's overall work ethic. motor and leadership ability.

Glenbrook South senior WR/DB Tyrone Cotton III- Cotton II is another athletic and versatile athlete who will no question become an impact player for the Titans this fall. Cotton III, who is verbally committed to South Dakota State I feel will draw more recruiting looks from higher level D1 schools this fall.

Glenbrook North senior OL Samuel Cray Paich Committed to Cincinnati, Paich (6-foot-5, 285 pounds) has the size, frame and potential to continue to develop and add more strength at the Power 4 level. Paich has good feet, moves and bends welll and just has great overall instincts yet also has room to continue to get better and better down the line.

Deerfield senior TE Jack Berger Big, long and athtic player who can play either receiver or tight end at the next level. Berger has drawn recruiting attention from various levels and his early fall video will draw lots of looks.

Sleeper Players to Watch?

Evanston senior QB Colin Livatino

Maine West senior WR/DB LaMarcus Hicks

Niles West senior DL Brayden Kuffel

Toughest Overall Schedule?

Maine South - The Hawks year in and year out always challenges itself from a scheduling standpoint and 2024 is no different. The Hawks open up on the road at Lincoln Way East, then host Warren Township, hit the road to Hersey then hoist Barrington in Week 4. Those are four state playoff teams and a few who could wind up in a state title game this fall.

Top 2024 Central Suburban Conference Games?

New Trier at Maine South September 20th- The annual rivalry game is always a good one. Maine South has been rolling this game and the entire South for decades now....but I do get the feeling that the Trevs have closed the gap a bit the last few yeaes.

Maine South at Glenbrook South October 10th- Potential conference title game? Maybe....

Maine West at Niles West October 18th- Again Maine West is a relatively safe pick to win the North...and Niles West just feels like a team ready for a turnaround here.

Central Suburban Conference Statement Game?

Central Suburban crossover games with the Mid Suburban conference-
One of the best things bothe the CSL and the MSL did was agree to the various crossover games. It's pretty simple really...,the top tams in the Central suburban play the top teams in the Mid Suburban and then work your way on down. For the most part the matchups are pretty fair and balanced and in my opinion help both conferences out coem post-season time.

Preseason Conference MVP?

Rochester senior QB Bryan Zulauf Rochester always has talented and well coaches signal callers....so years they are 6-foot-4 200 pounds and other years....not so much. Bryan Zulauf is listed t 5-foot-9, 170 pounds and simply plays like he's 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds. Zulauf has a great handle on the Rockets spread attack can make all the required throws and is a threat running with the football.

Glenwood junior QB Colt Knoedler- Knoedler had a breakout season along with the rest of a very young but also very talented Titans team in 2023. Knoedler looked even more impressive this summer, has a strong and accurate arm and is also a true dual threat as well.

Sacred Heart Griffin senior FB/LB Chris Link The Cyclones were able to get it's act together mid season in 2023 and are looking for that momentum to continue. SHG's Chris Link is a leader, a two way starter and a high energy player who will again be a key for the Cyclones this fall.

Quincy Notre Dame senior S Wyatt Mueller- Mueller, who is already committed to Illinois State is a physical player who brings a ton to the table. Look for Mueller to play all over the field this season for the Raiders.

Sleeper Players to Watch?

Sacred Heart Griffin QB Trent Caldwell- Caldwell will get his shot this fall and leading the SGH offense and Caldwell brings quite a bit to the table this season. Caldwell has a strong arm, is a threat running with the football and will have the usual deep and talented group of skills to utilize.

Toughest Overall Schedule?

Rochester
- The Rockets along with the rest of the newly realigned Central State 8 now play two non conference games along with two conference crossover games. Hooray! The Rockets and head coach derek Leonard aren't playing around here this season. Rochester opens ther season on the road taking on Simeon at Gately Stadium then travel to St Louis in Week 2 to face Cardinal Ritter one of the top private schools in Missouri. The crossover games include Springfield and SHG and again this is a very strong overall schedule.

Top 2024 Central State 8 Conference Games?

Sacred Heart Griffin at Quincy Notre Dame September 20th- The Cyclones are looking for a sp trong atart in a confernece that quite honestly isnt really strong in my opinion. I get the feeling that QND and head coach Jack Connell have been eyeing this game for some time now.

Rochester at Glenwood September 20th Conference championship game? Its possible and could this be the Titans best team in some time this fall? Regardless bith are state playoiff teams looking to get a big mid season win here.

Sacred Griffin Heart at Rochester October 25th- Technically it's not the Leonard Bowl anymore I guess? Regardless this will always be the Leonard Bowl to me.

Central State 8 Conference Statement Game?

Edwardsville at Glenwood or Cardinal Ritter at Rochester

Both game are Week 1 so this is a great chance to see just where both Glenwood and Rochester stand against two elite level programs in Edwardsvoille and Cardinal Ritter. Win or lose both schools will get better after these Week 1 games and I still believe that the CS8 will become a better conference because of crossover games.

2024 Conference Preview: CCL/ESCC Purple

EDGYTIM.com's 2024 CCL/ESCC White Conference Predicted Finish

+St. Viator

*DePaul Prep

*Benet Academy

St. Patrick

+denotes predicted 2024 conference champion

*denotes 2024 IHSA state playoff projected qualifier

Preseason Conference MVP?

St. Viator senior QB Cooper Kmet- Kmet, who is the younger brother of Chicago Bears TE Cole Kmet has all the tools and is a name to watch from a recruiting perspective this fall.

DePaul Prep senior LB Jett Reese- Reese, who recently committed to EIU is a big kid with very good speed and quickness. Reese could also wind up developing into a defensive end at the college level.

Benet Academy senior TE/DE Declan Walsh- Walsh is indeed the younger brother of Minnesota TE Piere Walsh who also has a ton to offer here. Walsh has good size, will add much more strength and muscle in college. Walsh is committed to St Thomas (FCS).

St. Patrick junior OT Conor Malenock- A starter since his freshman season, the Shamrock are looking for a breakout season and the Shamrocks offensive line is a plus position this fall led by Malenock.

Sleeper Players to Watch?

St, Viator senior WR/DB Davyion Ellis

DePaul Prep senior QB Ju Ju Rodriguez

Toughest Overall Schedule?

Benet Academy
The Redwings from top to bottom play 9 very strong opponents this fall. The Redwings open up the season hosting Hillcrest then host Moline in Week 2. The remainder of the crossover games including at Mount Carmel and at Nazareth Academy are truly no joke.

Top 2024 CCL/ESCC Purple Conference Games?

DePaul Prep at St. Viator October 4th

Benet Academy vs St Patrick at Trition College October 4th

CCL/ESCC Purple Conference Statement Game?

Crossover games against the CCL.ESCC schools- Again this conference is very solid and it's success usually arrives in the first few rounds of the IHSA state playoffs. Just getting through the CCL/ESCC crossover games healthy is a challenge but if these Purple schools can get to say 4-5 wins....they have a real shot at making post-season noise.

We made it

We're here, it's week 1. The season is upon us! All the fun, but stupid, offseason arguments are over. Does your team have a chance? What is their ceiling? If they're not a title contender what win makes your season?

Morris will be Morris and should be 7-0 heading into Sycamore and then I know nothing about the team from Grand Rapids. After that it depends if they go 4A or 5A. 5A they make the quarters or semis. They go 4A, is it another clash with Rochester?

Newcomers to Watch

We are looking forward to seeing many of our underclassmen take the next step in their development.

2024 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

We are still working on the schedule. I believe we are competing in one summer scrimmage.

Impact Player for Crete Monee
Crete Monee and head coach John Konecki once again has a pretty loaded roster for 2024 and the Warriors have several top names to watch over the next few seasons. Crete-Monee sophomore DB Jayden Marshall (5-foot-11, 165 pounds) is a speedy, twitchy athlete who is already holding a handful of FBS offers this spring and who's recruiting stock will just continue to rise. Marshall has track sprinters speed, impressive overall football skills and plays with spewed along with a high football IQ.

Looking for a sleeper name to watch for the Warriors? Keep an eye on Crete-Monee 2026 WR D'Arion Yarbrough along with sophomore WR Dorian Patterson and both are tall, lanky athletes who no question have a ton of upside.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Crete Monee Warriors

Crete Monee had a very young team in 2023 and several key underclassmen names gained valuable varsity experience that should pay off starting this fall for the Warriors. Crete Monee welcomes back 15 returning starters (9 offense 6 defense) including having talent and experience at several key positions. Crete Monee always plays a loaded non conference slate and will again get tested pretty much right out of the gates in 2024.

The biggest question for the Warriors heading into 2024?

Can Crete Monee develop enough overall depth and build up the programs numbers to make a deep post-season run this fall? Crete Monee under John Konecki has simply been one of the winningest programs in the South suburbs and also one of the top Class 6A programs state wide. The rise of Southland rival Kankakee has no question made things a bit more interesting for the Warriors but this remains a top tier program that I feel will have a punchers chance at contending for a possible state title again this coming season.
