Providence Catholic senior safety Gavin Hagen (6-foot-1, 195 pounds) is a talented and hard hitting defender as well as a leader for the Celtics this season. Hagen, who has been on several recruiting radar screens this summer has a chance to develop into a high level player in my opinion. In many ways Hagen reminds me of former Marist and now Iowa S John Nestor.

Looking for a sleeper name to watch for Providence Catholic? Providence Catholic junior RB Xavier Coleman (6-foot-2, 200 pounds) is a big. strong and very athletic play maker who looks ready for a major breakout season in 2024.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Providence Catholic Celtics

Provid3nc3 Catholic and headn coach Tyler Plantz is looking to improve upon the Celtics 8-5 season in 2023. The Celtics in 2023 made the Class 6A state playoff field and defeated Morton, Hillcrest and Highland before losing to JCA in the Class 5A quarterfinals. Head coach Tyler Plantz has posted a 17-10 record entering his third season this fall as the Celtics head coach.

The biggest question facing Providence Catholic this summer?

Can the Celtics take the next few huge steps and win a state title in 2024? Providence Catholic welcomes back an abundance of talent for the 2024 season both at the cvarsity level as well as in the lower levels. Providence played a ton of underclassmen in 2023 (17 returning starters) and has a starting lineup that has deep varsity experience including post-season experience. Look for the Celtics to be one of the top teams in 5A/6A this season.

Impact Player for Glenbard West

Glenbard West senior 3 star ranked WR/DB Mason Ellens has been a true impact player for the Hilltoppers over the past few seasons in all three aspects of the game. Ellens, who is verbally committed to Iowa State as a safety recruit has speed, explosiveness and Ellens just seem s to make big plays whenever it's needed for Glenbard West.

Looking fror a sleeper name to watch for Glenbard West? Glenbard West senior RB/WR Teyion Oriental is yet another impact player for the Hilltoppers this season. Oriental has impressive vision, runs with power and quickness and he can also be a big time play maker this fall.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Glenbard West Hilltoppers

Glenbard West and head coach Chad Hetlet is looking to improve upon it's 8-3 record in 2023. The Hilltoppers made the 2023 Class 8A state playoff field, beat Naperville North then lost to Edwardsville in Round 2. Glenbard West head coach Chad Hetlet has posted a 169-31 record in 17 seasons and has ld the program to the Class 7A state title in 2012 and 2015. Hetlet has also gotten the Hilltoppers in the IHSA state playoff field in all 17 seasons at Glenbard West.

The biggest question facing Glenbard West this summer?

Can the Hilltoppers reload at a handful of positions and make a deep playoff run this fall? Glenbard West has been one of the most consistent winning public school programs in Chicagoland over the past few decades and look to be not slowing down anytime soon. If the Hitters can reload at QB/LB this summer, this is a team that has the ingredients to win big in 2024.

Impact Player for Shepard

Shepard senior RB/LB Anthony Loughran (5-foot-11, 205 pounds) is a terrific two way starter and impact player this fall for the Astros. Loughran has a terrific motor and just attacks on every play and his overall talent and production will be huge this fall for Shepard.

Looking fror a sleeper name to watch for Shepard? Shepard senior WR/DB Cameren Tryon (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) is another talented two way starter and impact performer on both sides of the football again for the Astros this fall.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Shepard Astros

Shepard and head coach John Rone is looking to improve upon the Astros back to back 3-6 seasons in 2022 and 2023. John Rone has posted a 30-25 record in 6 season for Shepard and has gotten them into the IHSA state playoff field in 3 seasons.

The biggest question facing Shepard this summer?

Can the Astros break the 3-6 record this fall and challenge for a potential IHSA state playoff spot in 2024? The Astros welcome back 13 returning starters (6 offense 7 defense) and this was a Shepard team that lost a handful of close games that could have gotten them into the playoffs with a break here and there. The Astros also wion it's last two games of the regular season and hopefully they can build upon that late season momentum this fall. I'm looking for a turnaround here from Shepard and look for them to get in the 5-6 wins range this regular season.

CS8 Predictions

With QND entering the conference, the CS8 now has 12 teams. This has led to splitting the conference into two 6-team divisions. All teams had the option of scheduling non-conference opponents the first two weeks, play their division games the next five, and the final two weeks are cross division games. Everyone, except Lincoln, has at least one non-conference game and almost half the teams were able to schedule two. SHG, Chatham, and Rochester all play teams from Missouri.

There are two new coaches, Nate Borders at Southeast and Ademola Adeniji at Lanphier.

Four QB's who threw for over 1,700 yards return but all the major RB's from '23 have either graduated or moved to Texas (Myson Johnson Cook). Looking at returning All-Conference picks, the teams with the most aren't Rochester, SHG, or Chatham. Instead, Jacksonville, U High, and Lincoln each return 4 picks.

West Division
1-SHG (7-4 in 2023, made 2nd round of 5A playoffs)
SHG has to replace QB Levi Hanauer and RB Christian Pollard but otherwise are a much more experienced team than last season. I felt the Cyclones played their best football in '23 in Weeks 9 through 11. SHG has a very challenging Week 1 game on the road against St Louis Christian Brothers. After that, they should be favored the next six weeks before ending with Chatham and Rochester. Look for WR-DB and return threat Jamarion Bardwell to have a big season. He has already won state titles in football, basketball, and track. Key Game: Week 8 at home vs Chatham. Chatham is on the rise and believes they can beat both SHG and Rochester this year. They last beat both in '19.

2-Jacksonville (4-5 in 2023, 5A team last in the playoffs in 2022)
The Crimsons have to replace the CS8's leading rusher Cam'Ron Mitchell and QB Mani Moore. They do return a lot of size and have an excellent Kicker. Jacksonville has a nice early schedule and has a strong chance to be 4-1 after Week 5. They close with Springfield, QND, Mac, and Lincoln. There's not a clear favorite in any of those games at this time but at least one win to get the Crimsons to 5 should be doable. Key Game: Week 6: at Springfield. Jacksonville won 31-7 in '23 but Springfield will be improved.

3-Springfield (3-6 in 2023, 6A team last in the playoffs in 2021)
The Senators/Solons went 4-5 in '22, which was their 1st year without 4-year starting QB Rashad Rochelle. They took a step back last year, going 3-6 and losing by at least 17 points in all their defeats. Springfield returns Junior QB Brody Scheffler, who passed for over 1,700 yards as a Sophomore. He should be even better in his 2nd year starting. As the only 6A school in the CS8 other than Chatham, Springfield has been able to avoid the low program numbers and loss of Freshman football that has hurt some other conference schools. They need a fast start as the regular season ends with SHG, Rochester, and Chatham. 5 wins are possible. Key Game: Week 2 at Mac. Springfield led in the 4th Quarter at Mac in '22 and lost on the last play of the game, denying them a 5th win. Without RB Johnson Cook, this is a winnable game for the Senators.

4-Quincy Notre Dame (5-6 in 2023, made 2nd round of 2A playoffs)
QND comes into the conference with very difficult Week 1 and 2 games against 7A Quarterfinalist Quincy and 4A power Richmond Burton. They return a QB with some experience and appear to have some other talented players. The question is whether a 2A team has the necessary depth to play a 9-week schedule against all 4A-7A teams. 5 wins are possible. Key Game: Week 9 at Mac. There's a chance that both teams could be 4-4 going into Week 9.

5-Southeast (2-7 in 2023, 5A school last in the playoffs in 2014)
Nate Borders is third new coach in a row for the Spartans. He was an assistant last year and at 23 is surely one of the youngest head coaches in the state. Southeast played better the second half of '23 and ended the season with back-to-back wins against Eisenhower and Lanphier. They return a QB with some starting experience. The Spartans have a chance to improve on their win total from '23. Key Game: Week 1 at East Peoria. The Spartans have a realistic chance to get Coach Borders a win in his first game when they face a team that was 2-7 last year.

6-Lanphier (0-9 in 2023, 5A school last in the playoffs in 2004)
New coach Ademola Adeniji was a standout RB at Lanphier and EIU. He is stepping into a very challenging position. The Lions were running clocked in all but one game last year and gave up 41 or more points in each outing. According to a story in the State Journal Register, they could have as few as three seniors out. Lanphier only dressed about 30 kids for the Rochester game last year, which is way too low for a 5A school. Key Game: Week 2 at home against East Peoria. This is the Lions best chance to play a competitive game until they face Eisenhower in Week 8.

East Division
1-Rochester (14-0 in 2023, 4A State Champions)
The Rockets return QB Bryan Zulauf, who wasn't expected to play much last year until Parker Gillespie was hurt in the preseason. Zulauf threw for over 2,400 yards and 32 TD's and was very effective in the state championship game. Derek has always got improvement from his multi-year starting QB's (Nic Baker and Clay Bruno in particular). Expect Zulauf to run more this year and to be even more of a play maker. The biggest concerns are the Offensive Line, where only Center Jake Milliron returns, and the Secondary which is mostly new and will be tested early and often by Cardinal Ritter and Chatham. Rochester does have 4 or 5 viable options at running back. Each has some experience and a rotation of at least 2-3 is likely. Three tough games in the first 4 weeks will test the 16 new starters, especially on the defense. Key Game: Week 2 at home against St Louis Cardinal Ritter. The Rockets usually dominate at home, but this will be a huge challenge against a team with loads of D-1 talent.

2-Chatham (8-4 in 2023, made 6A Quarterfinals)
There's excitement in Titan land heading into the season. They return Junior QB Colton Knoedler. I thought the Titans staff waited too long last year to turn him loose and throw more. Having said that, he still threw for almost 2,400 yards and 30 TD's. Chatham also returns his top 4 receiving options. Watch for Junior WR Blake Lehnen to be a matchup nightmare for CS8 defensive coordinators. The Titans did themselves a favor and likely the rest of the CS8 as well by scheduling 7A/8A power Edwardsville Week 1. Expect the Tigers to run right at the Titans defense until they show they can stop it. The defense was undersized last year and will need to improve if Chatham wants to make a deep run in the 6A playoffs. Key Game: Week 4 at home against Rochester. This is the Titans best chance for a win since '19 and both Titan wins over the Rockets have come at home.

3-Normal U High (7-3 in 2023, made 4A playoffs)
U High was the surprise of the CS8 last year, going from 3 to 7 wins. The Pioneers did fade a bit near the end of the season with shutout losses to both Chatham and Coal City in the first round of the playoffs. They likely return the most starters (18) of any CS8 school and have Alek Weiland back at QB. He threw for almost 1,800 yards as a Junior. Can the Pioneers take the next step and compete well with Chatham and Rochester in '24? Key Game: Week 2 at Bloomington. This is a nice non-conference opponent for U High and a win over a 6A playoff team from '23 would be another positive for the program.

4-Decatur MacArthur (6-4 in 2023, made 5A playoffs)
Mac started out 1-3 last year and then won 5 in a row heading into the playoffs. Losing elite Sophomore RB Myson Johnson Cook, who has moved to Texas, is a huge blow. The Generals also have to replace QB Cameron France who was impressive in big games against Rochester, Chatham, and SHG last year. Even with these losses, they have a reasonable chance at 5 wins. Key Game: Week 3 at U High. Mac lost at U High 28-14 last year in what I viewed at the time as an upset. They may need an upset of U High in this game to get to 5 wins.

5-Lincoln (5-5 in 2023, made 4A playoffs)
Lincoln came back into the CS8 last year from the Apollo Conference and made the playoffs for the first time since 1984. They did have a favorable schedule, with their 5 '23 victories coming against teams that combined for only 9 wins. They have some size returning and making the playoffs created some enthusiasm at what is known as a Basketball school. However, the Railers lost their main offensive weapons to graduation. The Carson twins, who played both RB and WR, accounted for over 25 TD's last year and will be hard to replace. Key Game: Week 8 at Quincy Notre Dame. This is a must win for the Railers if they want to make the playoffs again.

6-Decatur Eisenhower (1-8 in 2023, 5A team last in playoffs in 2016)
Eisenhower was very young last year. They were running clocked in all but one of their losses and got their only win against 0-9 Lanphier. If they are able to retain most of the young players who were thrown into varsity play last year, they could be more competitive. Hard to know at this time as it's always difficult to get info on the Decatur schools. Key Game: Week 1 at Streator. This is a great chance to be competitive and possibly pull off an upset against a 2-7 team to start the season.

Wheaton South senior WR Amari Williams is a speedy and athletic big receiver who has great hands, ball skills and impressive body control. Williams, who is already committed to NIU this summer will continue to draw recruiting looks and interest this fall.

Looking fror a sleeper name to watch for Wheaton South? Wheaton South junior QB Luca Carbonaro will be a rare three year varsity starter who has developed into one of the better quarterbacks to watch in the West suburbs this coming season.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Wheaton South Tigers

Wheaton South and head coach Sean Norris is looking to build upon it's 5-5 record in 2023. The Tigers made the Class 7A state playoff field and lost to Hersey in opening round action. Sean Norris has posted a 13-18 record in 3 seasons at Wheaton South and has gotten the Tigers into the state playoffs twice in three seasons

The biggest question facing Wheaton South this summer?

Can the Tigers take the next step and win the Dukane conference crown and then make a deeper push into the Class 7A state playoffs? The Tigers played a ton of underclassmen in 2023 and some of the key names will have multiple years of varsity reps. The Tigers offense in particular looked strong this summer and if the defense can replace 8 graduated starters this summer they can make some noise this season.

Plainfield Central senior OL Kaevon Lee (6-foot-6, 270 pounds) is an experienced leader and D1 level recruit this season for the Wildcats. Lee, who early in the process committed to NIU but who has since reopened his process has the size and overall tools to develop into a high level linemen at the high college level.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Plainfield Central Wildcats

Plainfield Central and first year head coach Robby Carriger will look to improve this season on the Wildcats 4-5 season in 2023. Plainfield Central new head coach Robby Carriger, a 2005 Plainfield Central grad comes in from Oklahoma where he spent 12 season as a coordinator at four schools. The Wildcats this season will need to reload at several positions and building up more overall numbers and depth will be priority one for Robby Carriger.

The biggest question facing Plainfield Central this summer?

Can the Wildcats reload at several spots and win this season? Plainfield Central lost its head coach Rob Keane who decided to step down and take ther head varsity baseball position. Plainfield Central also graduated a big senior class and if this program can reload especially in the underclassmen group they have a chance at challenging in the SWPEast in 2024.

Danville and head coach Marcus Forrest is looking to improve on the Vikings 6-4 record in 2023. Danville made the Class 6A state playoff field and lost to Washington in opening round action. Danville head coach Marcus Forrest has psoted a 36-28 record in 7 seasons at Danville and has gotten the Vikings into the IHSA state playoffs in 4 seasons.

The biggest question facing Danville this summer?

Can the Vikings once again challenge in the Big 12 cvonference race and make a deeper run in the IHSA Class 6A state playoff field? Lots of excitement these days in Danville as the Vikings have done a compete renovation to its home field including adding field turf fore the first time. If any Big 12 team will benefit from a new surface....it will be Danville. If the Vikings can reload at a few key spots (RB/LB/DL) they can again get back to the state playoff field.

The Podcasts are coming.....The Podcast are coming

The Third and Leng podcast will be back this season as Matt Leng and I will talk IHSA Class 4A to Class 1A plus 8 Man Football each week.

The weekly Between The Lines [podcast with Mike Clark is also back hopingfor a first episode this Sunday..

Also we are seeking anyone with a business that would want to sponsor either or both podcast this season. Feel freer to email me edgytim@edgytim.com with any serious inquiries only please and thanks.

Week 0 questions that should have stayed in my head....

Week 0 scrimmages..... Are they home and home?

Does one school just lose out on the revenue?

What happens when people start scheduling them and the other school just pulls out the following year when they are on the road?

Were the summer jamborees and scrimmages not enough?

BTW Big fan of the idea but will love to hear coaches opinions in a couple years also adds to the preseason star player gets hurt week 0 but team uses it as motivation story line.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Coal City Coalers

Coal Cirty and head coach Francis Loughran is looking to improve upon the Coalers 8-3 season in 2023. Coal City head vopacvh Francis Loughran has posted a 21-11 recvord in 3 seasons and has gotten the Coalers into the IHSA state playoiffs in all three seasons at the helm.

The biggest question facing Coal City this summer?

Can the Coalers reload at a few key positions and keep winning this season? Coal City has been one of the better and most consistent overall smaller enrollment programs in the state. Coal City welcomes back 10 returning starters (5 offense 5 defense) amd oif they can fill in at a few key spots this summer (OL/LB) they have a great chance at again challenging in the Illinois Central 8 conference and also in Class 4A.

ICE Preseason Predictions

This probably could have been pushed in with my OOC game. thread but I have nothing better to do today and I feel like we can discuss more in depth how we all think the ICE season will play out. This year I feel like the ICE will have a little more parity in the middle-bottom tier teams. It's hard to predict exactly who will win which week in many of them, but I think that it after the top 3 its kind of wide open.

Top Tier

1) Wilmington (9-0) - You heard it here I typically don't like to hype the hometown up to such high expectations, but a defending conference and state championship team that returns a decent amount of their talent has to be the favorite. The biggest question they will face is will they fall into 2 or 3A. Good chronological mix of opponent toughness throughout the year. Biggest conference game Week 7 when the Coalers travel to hear the rumble of the Harley's.

Second Tier

2) Coal City (7-2) - Should only drop games to Morris and Wilmo. They have plenty of time to prepare for Peotone in week 5 and that is their biggest conference game IMO just because it's really the only other team besides Wilmo with a shot to beat them. 7-2 or 6-3 makes a huge difference in a 4A bracket. Then two weeks later they will be playing for the ICE championship against Wilmo. Which is also a huge game, but I honestly think the Peotone game is more pivotal. If they beat the 'Tone then momentum will be high when they travel to Reents field.

3) Peotone (7-2) - Two very winnable OOC games and week 3 should be another prep week for Wilmington. However CC in week 5 (also the devils biggest ICE game) will more than likely put them at 3-2 and then it's up to them to keep their heads up and coast through the rest of the regular season. I do think they are the most likely of the top three ICE teams to slip somewhere, however I still think Coach Tolly will have them in prime shape to win a playoff game or two with their high seed due to a solid regular season performance.

Middle/Bottom Tier
I think this could be one of the toughest years in recent history to predict who the bottom will be. Lisle slipped last year and maybe it is an indicator of where the program is headed. Was RC plagued by injuries or are they once again a non-contender? Streator has a new coach, how will that work for them? I am typically very adamant about not just scheduling a horrible OOC slate to get the easy wins, but I honestly think that if any of these teams goes 2-0 in OOC it is possible that they could make playoffs with how wide open the middle to bottom of the ICE is

4) Manteno (4-5) - Their two OOC games will get them battle tested, however the problem with them (losing) those two games is that they have loses on the ICE schedule against Wilmo, CC, and Tone. I am going to assume that they have enough to beat the remaining ICE competition. This is an odd spot because I am not sure if any (or how many), 4 win teams will get into the playoffs. However they will only lose to three ICE teams and finish 4th. Biggest ICE game Route 50 Rumble in week 6 at Manteno. I think that is their playoff clinching game right there if they can win it.

5) Reed-Custer (5-4) - I will give the Vomets the benefit of the doubt (like you all should that I "accidentally" hit the V key instead of the C) and predict that they win week 1. After that, all they have to do the rest of the season is win against the the 3 ICE teams below them and they will make the playoffs. The last three weeks of the season will all be must win to guarantee a play off birth. I do think that RC still has the buzz from a few years ago and even though they may not have as much talent as that awesome class, they have the culture to be consistently in the middle, however if they do not make the playoffs this year, I think that will be a better indicator of the true colors of the program and I think it will be back to the bottom for them. Biggest ICE game home against Manteno week 7. A win here could potentially get them to six wins or it means if they slip against another team the should beat they still get their 5.

6) Streator (3-6) - OOC is the season deciding factor here. They could be 3-6 or 5-4 depending on how those games play out. I do think their program is trending up and should get 2 wins in the ICE. Week 8 with Braidwood at home. This could potentially get them to 4 wins or 5 depending how Ottawa is.

7) Lisle (2-7) - A week one win may be their last until they play Herscher in week 7. I was always so high on Lisle to be a dark horse especially when teams traveled to Benedictine, but with more teams in the ICE playing on turf more often, I feel like their home field advantage has been a bit negated. I could be completely wrong and the Lions end up with a few more ICE wins, however I think the other programs are trending up and Lisle sadly is starting a downward dip. Biggest ICE game is at home week 5 against Manteno. If they win this I honestly think it turns them around and my initial prediction is way off. A win week 5 could set them up for a 5-4 playoff season. However they have 3 tough games weeks 2,3, and 4. If injuries run rampant in Lisle it will be a long season.

8) Herscher (0-9) - I am not counting the Tigers out completely, but I have to make a prediction somehow. I do think they could swing this into a 3-6 at best. I think they will have a punchers chance in several of their ICE games, but in the end I just don't think they have what it takes. Biggest ICE game is week 4 at Reed-Custer. If they can win this I think it will prove that they can sneak away wins against a few of the other ICE teams. If they lose it then I think they are doomed for a winless season.

These are just my thoughts. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong. I don't talk to as many people as I used to so I am a little out of the ICE world as far as offseason goes.

Biggest questions -

Will 4 wins get a team into playoffs, and which 4 win teams will get in? Right now I see 3 guaranteed in and 2 fringe (RC, Manteno)
Will the purple cats be in 2 or 3A?
Will RC actually beat the teams I have picked below them in the ICE (or Manteno)?

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Lakes Eagles

Lakes and head coach Jason George Ellerman is looking to bounce back this fall from it's 1-8 season in 2023. Lakes head coach Jason George Ellerman has posted a 5-13 record over the past two seasons and is looking to get Lakes back into the IHSA state playoff field this fall for the first time since the 2021 season.

The biggest question facing Lakes this summer?

Can the Eagles take advantage of an experienced starting lineup back on both sides of the football and find it's way back to the top of the Northern Lake County conference and back into the IHSA state playoff field this fall? Lakes welcomes back 15 returning starters (8 offense 7 defense) and if the program can add a bit more overall depth and numbers this summer...this could be a nice potential sleeper team to watch this fall.

Impact Player for Evanston

Evanston senior QB Colin Livatino (5-foot-11 190 pounds) will be a two year varsity starter for the Kits this fall. Livatino showed well thids past spring and summer at various camps and his continued development will no question be a big key for Evanston this fall.

Looking for a sleeper name to watch this fall for Evanston? Evanston senior DB Jace Meeks (6-foot-1, 180 pounds) is a name to watch this fall for the Wildkits. Meeks has impressive cover skills, is a heavy hitter and a great finisher in run support.
EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Evanston

Evanston and veteran head coach Mike Burzawa is looking to improve upon a 3-6 season in 2023. Evanston head coach Mike Burzawa has posted a 74-76 overall record in 16 seasons leading the Wildkits program.

The biggest question facing Evanston Wildkits this summer?

Can the Wildkits find a way to get 5 plus wins and get back into the IHSA state playoff field in 2024? Evanston played a ton of underclassmen in 2023 and this team has much more experience and should be improved from a season ago. The conference is always a grind and should be again in 2024, but this Evanston team has talent and decent depth and should be in the hunt all season long.

JCA preview

Hi guys! I have unfortunately moved to Wisconsin so I am very out of the loop on JCA. Fortunately, I am right by my grandkids!!
Can anyone share with me any JCA thoughts? Do they look to be very good at all this year? Are there plenty of kids on the team for depth? Do we have a QB and at least one running back? Tell me what you know or second hand news. I looked thru till early July and did not see the topic.
Thanks anybody!!

Western Big 6 pre-season look

Probably my longest post on the WB6 this year. Football starts tomorrow here in Montana so life is about to get busy for me. Should be another entertaining year in the northwestern part of the start with really only 1 team being a known quantity. Also as an interesting note, this must be travel out of state year for the conference as Sterling goes to Beliot, WI, UT goes to Eau Claire, WI, Geneseo goes to Clinton, WI, Moline goes to Fenton, MO, Quincy goes to Jefferson City, MO, Rocky stays in state lines, as does Galesburg (but they host Morrison who the Streak's faithful might have thought was from out of state).

Rock Island Alleman: No varsity schedule this season, but they are playing a freshmen and JV schedule. Numbers are up in the 40’s so things are looking up for a program who used to be a perennial power in the small class level. Alleman will also scrimmage with Riverdale week 0 which could be considered its one “varsity” tilt for the season. Hopefully they will rejoin the varsity ranks next season.

Galesburg: 2-7 (1-5 WB6) The Silver Streaks start the season with an interim head coach. Don’t know the story about what happened with the head coach and what caused him to leave partway through the summer. Galesburg returns a decent number of starters from last year and has a solid group of seniors who have been the main leaders of the team. Giving up 39.8 points a game last year, the Streaks need to figure out how to get stops on defense if they want to take the next step forward.

Key game: Cheating here a bit with two games. Week 2 vs Limestone and Week 3 vs Morrison. Being able to pick up two wins before starting WB6 play would be a huge start.

Prediction: 3-6

Moline: 4-5 (2-4) The Maroons return a lot of members who got valuable experience last year, including 7 starters on the offense. Coach Morrissey has been around the block a few times with this Moline crew and knows how to get things turned around. He did it when he first came in, he did it after a rough covid season, now can he do it again? If the team can find consistency on both sides of the ball (when it’s clicking, Moline punishes with its Wing-T offense), then the Maroons can push to the upper part of the WB6

Key game: Week 4 vs Quincy. Moline starts with two very tough games out of the gate, but if they want to top the conference then Moline will need to get past an explosive Quincy team and that test comes early in the conference run.

Prediction: 6-3

Geneseo: 6-4 (3-3) The Leafs are a bit of an unknow going into this season with new head coach Matt Furlong (coming from Cary-Grove). Also, Geneseo graduated A LOT from last years team (zero returning starters). So with a lot of new faces in the starting rotation and a new offensive and defensive playbook, really not sure what we will see….other than probably trying to run the ball down your throat. At the end of the game, this is Geneseo and Geneseo does football.

Key game: Week 3 vs Moline. After two ho-hum opponents to start the season, the Leaf’s start conference play against another team looking to climb back to the top of the hill. A win here sets the tone for the rest of the Geneseo season.

Prediction: 6-3

Quincy: 11-1 (6-0) Unlike Geneseo, the reigning WB6 champs have a lot of well known going into this season. Starting with QB Bradyn Little, Quincy brings back all the main pieces of an offense that averaged 42 points a game and broke the 50 point mark 4 times. The question mark will be on the Oline as they are breaking in 4 new linemen. They also bring back 7 defensive starters, but this unit was up and down over the season. If the line and the defense put it all together, then look out.

Key game: Week 4 vs Moline. Yeah, the Sterling game looms large later in the season, but the Blue Devils play Sterling at home. Week 4, they have to make the long trip to Moline to face a team looking to knock the current king off.

Prediction: 9-0

Rock Island: 3-6 (3-3) Rock Island was a young team with a new head coach last year and it showed early as they dropped 5 straight. At the end of the season, they turned it around and won 3 of their last 4. Now with a year of the system under their belts and bringing back 7 starters on offense and 8 on defense, the Rocks will be looking to get to the playoffs. The schedule starts rough with games against Minooka, Dunlap, and going to Quincy week 1,2, and 3.

Key game: Week 5 vs Moline. The Rocks want to show they mean business? Then they need to take back control of their rivalry with Moline.

Prediction: 5-4

United Township: 4-5 (2-4) UT has a very up and down season with a mix of blowout wins, blowout losses, and heartbreaking losses. The big question going into the season is who will be the team leaders as only 5 starters combined return. It will start at the quarterback position as multi-year starter Matthew Kelley has moved on to college. The schedule starts with a couple of winnable match ups (La-Salle Peru and Muchin College Prep) before the conference grind starts with a trip to Wisconsin towards the end of the season.

Key game: Week 3 vs Sterling. A very young defense has 2 weeks to grow up before the power run game of Sterling comes to town. This game will be a good measuring stick for the Panthers.

Prediction: 3-6

Sterling: 5-6 (4-2) Sterling had one of the weirdest seasons I have ever seen them have. Started off 0-2 before getting a few wins, then getting blasted by 3A Princeton, then bursting Geneseo’s bubble, taking Quincy to the wire, dropping a head scratcher to Rocky, and then getting past Moline. To top it all off? Making the playoffs with 4 wins as a 16 seed and smashing the 1 seed Chicago Payton (yes, I know it was a CPL team). Sterling losses a good amount of production from last season’s team, but Sterling has been a solid program for a long time and there are always talented kids wanting to wear the Blue and Gold.

Key game: Week 1 vs Metamora. For the Warriors, getting off to a strong start will really help the season. Last year, Sterling lead Metamora at the half but did nothing in the 2nd half leading to a 11 point loss.

Prediction: 6-3
