Bears

You're not getting one of the top defenders in the game for a first and a 5th round pick. Why do people think their teams can low ball other teams for their top player?

Again, me liking this trade was based on the Bears addressing the OL through free agency. If they come away with 2 top OL then that position becomes less of a priority in the draft and they could address other issues and add depth on the OL.
Totally agree with you 4A and we don’t agree often. OL is a must and every other need is secondary. Bears need to stay focused and after they fill the primary need then see how to fill other needs.

I assume they would prefer to add two starting IOL via FA as to not have two rookies start on IOL. If they did the former it really opens up the draft for them.

On the Garret front. Trading for him impacts both your draft assets and your financial assets (though you can massage that in NFL). It certainly does help solve an issue that is top 3 on team but it is going to impact the ability to solve the OL immensely, IMO. Right guy, wrong time.

So do they wait until after the Super Bowl or has the call already been placed to Bezos to buy the team?
RIP Virginia…

As far as Bezos, he won’t have a chance as current minority Pat Ryan would almost assuredly buy the team due to existing ownership contract where he has first dibs.

The timing does align perfectly for McCaskeys to sell at least a portion of the team for the needed cash infusion for AH.

I'm certain Ryan has right of first refusal on any sale, but if someone like Bezos were to come along I have a hard time believing a smart business man like Pat Ryan would be able to pass on that opportunity.

Fun to talk about, but there's so many moving pieces involved it will take years to figure out. Virginia was the figure head, but she represented 13 family members that owned 80% of the Bears and getting 13 family members to agree on anything let alone selling an NFL team is no small feat. That being said if push came to shove and all of the Halas/McCaskey members wanted to sell I'm not sure Pat Ryan and his 17% would be able to do that much about it.

I assume many many of the family members would like their money. We will see how it shakes out. For what it’s worth Ryan is 87, no spring chicken, he might want his cash as well.
Ryan may want cash, but he certainly doesn't need it. Have you heard how much he gave to NU to put his name on a new football stadium?

While he may not want to pony up the remaining 80% to buy the team outright, all he needs is another 30.4% to become majority owner at 51%. Although he is a multi-billionaire, he isn't crazy wealthy like Musk, Bezos, Buffett, etc. He may not want to tie up most of his wealth in a majority ownership position with the Bears.

Honestly, I don't want Ryan as majority owner. Nothing against him or his family, but I want a majority owner who has at least several times the wealth as Ryan and who is super driven by ego to be a winner. I don't want an owner who requires immediate ROI through profits. I want an owner who wants to build an empire through sustained extraordinary success on the field.

Agree, Bezos could buy the league multiple times over.

Ryan would be the 7th richest NFL owner, he has the same net worth as Jerry Jones.

Don't want an owner whose wealth is primarily tied up in the club. Don't want an owner who is comfortable being profitable.

I want an owner who is at least several times wealthier than Ryan, who HATES losing, and who will do whatever it takes to create sustained extraordinary success.

Actually, the 10 owners worth the least, far out perform the top 10 earning owners.

Why does how much they are worth matter?

There is zero correlational between how much the owner is worth and team success.

Why? Personal preference.

I want an owner like the one who owns the LA Rams. Someone who is wealthy and who knows what to do with a professional sports franchise. Bears ownership seem like total amateurs compared to that guy.
