MC vs Eisenhower

So what is your line? 6A = "gimme a break" and not very "sophisticated" programs? But 7A = good to go?

I'm not going through all the schedules, but I'm very confident that most teams in class 7a played a number of 8a teams during the year; however, only a handful of 5a teams (and you know who they are) played many 7a or 8a teams.

Here's a breakdown of Carmel's state championships by class. Remember that from 1980 - 2000, 6A was the largest class. Class 7A and 8A were added in 2001.

MC's totals: 8 in 5A, 2 in 6A, 1 in 7A, and 1 in 8A

All eight of their 5A crowns came when 6A was the largest class.

It's interesting to note that their championships, like those for Montini, Providence, JCA, and Bishop Mac, tended to come in bunches. Never mind the streaks of making the playoffs--we're talking about the streaks of winning it all. Carmel and the others mentioned have won state titles two, three, and four or more times in a row. This is no coincidence. Winning consecutive titles establishes a winning tradition and helps a school recruit. So that's why highly successful schools should be bumped up a class or two. It's like a luxury tax in MLB: sometimes you have to pay to play, and you have to play to win.

That is what the Success Factor is for and that is fine. When Montini and SR and JCA reach the point that they get success factored up, then so be it. Naz is in the midst of being promoted up a couple classes because of their recent success.

But your original statement of “any program that has won multiple championships should be promoted a class or 2” did not come off as this, it came off as since Montini and JCA have won multiple titles in the past, they should be bumped up a couple classes forever and that’s where I disagree.

Here is another way of looking at it ...

Mt Carmel has won 12 state championships. Of these, two were at the highest level at that time; nine were one level down; and one was two levels down. We've lost five state championship games: two at the highest level at that time, and three at one level down. We lost in the semis in 1987 to East St Louis in the highest level.

In the seven years from 2006 to 2012, we competed in 8A playoffs.

Well, there you go:
2 championships and an assortment of runners-up trophies.

Sure wish you aren't so hard on them, that's a brutal standard you set.
