Interesting comments regarding the NIC-10 conference from former Harlem HC Jim Morrow

At the 36 minute mark of the latest 3ed and Leng podcast I ask former longtime Harlem head coach Jim Morrow...who is now the head coach at South Beloit about the current state playoff system without 1-32 along with having to play in a locked conference in the NIC10 and the impact good/bad in a locked conference.

Week 4 CPL Pick Em

It's Thursday and that means that we have our week of HOT CPL action slated to kickoff in less than 6 hours! Conference play is in full swing and you know what that means! Throw out the records rivalries are starting to take center stage!

North Grand vs Payton Thursday 7:15 at Fritz Pollard Stadium
This rivalry, is it a rivalry?, ahh Who cares. Matches a 1-0 North Grand vs a 3-0 Payton squad. What happened to the first 2 weeks of North Grand's schedule? Eagle Owls that intimidating they couldn't get anyone on the schedule? CPL so confused they even had a football team they forgot to schedule them until they started complaining? Who knows?
Who wants to bet the Owls come ready to play? Who thinks Payton is back and is ready to reclimb the ranks? So many Who's can only mean one thing! Who Gonna Beat the Eagle Owls? WHO WHO WHO nobody! Owls fly to victory.

CVS vs Ag Science Thursday 7:15 Gately Stadium
The receipts against the Farmers. Farmers have been on a roll, but now they have to take their tractors down to Gately on a Friday night? Not so sure if the hay is in the barn quite yet. If college football has taught us anything this season it's that Primetime is keeping receipts. If its good enough for Prime it's good enough for me! CVS it is.

Corliss/Butler College Prep Co-Op vs. Comer Catamounts Friday 4:15 at Comer
This game is at Comer? They have a field apparently which is slightly confusing to me. When I'm confused I stick to the old reliables. This old reliable is my good friend's love of alliteration. So many C's in this matchup. So much alliteration. So much average football, C's right? Guess I'll see this one live. Give me the Corliss Co-Op!

Senn vs. Chicago Academy Friday 4:15 at Chicago Academy
Now we're talking local rivalaries. The Dawgz love getting off the bus and rolling onto the field to take control of the game. Chicago Academy's coach loves Twitter, although not so much during this rough stretch to start the season. Which love holds true Friday afternoon? You know where my heart lies... Give me the DAWGZ!

Can't believe we're almost half way through the season. Enjoy it, while you can...

ICE Week 4

First third of the season is over. I think it is starting to shape up a little but, but there is still room for teams to break out or fall off.

Reed-Custer (1-2) @ Herscher (0-3) - I think it is becoming more evident that RC has fallen a bit since last year and losing their QB doesn't help them climb back to the top, but I do not think Herscher will give them any scares this week. I don't think it's an all out pounding, however it is not close. Look for the Comets to win comfortably even if not by a huge score. RC 35 - Herscher 21

Coal City (2-1) @ Lisle (1-2) - Important game for Lisle here, but I don't think they have enough to beat a CC team that appears to be trending up after a Week 1 loss. I still don't think Lisle is horrible like HHS said in last weeks post, but I do think their playoff chances appearing to be more bleak and especially with a loss this week. Coal City should win with ease. CC 42 - Lisle 16

Manteno (1-2) - @ Streator (1-2) - I considered this for game of the week. Let's call this one the Pride Bowl. Both teams just looking for a reason to walk taller Monday in the school halls. I honestly have no idea how this goes. Manteno barely beat Herscher and in Streator's win this year they scored huge. To add to the complexity, Streator has given up a ton of points in the games lost, while Manteno has only given up some points. Truly a toss up. Give me the home team and the team that put up 74 week 1. Sloppy fun game though. Streator 52 - Manteno 42

Wilmington (2-1) @ Peotone (2-1) - GOTW!! Wilmington is back on track and wants to ride the rest of the season out unscathed. It sounds like the Cats are getting healthy again and it sounds like the double-wing is running on all cylinders. Both teams have important games next week so hopefully neither team gets caught looking forward. Physical sound and pound game. Wilmington 28 Peotone 24

618 Talk Week 4/Playoffs Hope?

As we are now 1/3 through the fall, both the Southwestern and Mississippi Valley Conference begin league play this week. Being at this critical point of the season, the analysis this week will be more focused on the postseason prospects rather than last week's results.

Southwestern Conference
East St. Louis(1-2): The Flyers have embarked on the toughest campaign in Illinois thus far, resulting in losses to Mt. Carmel and Atascocita, TX. Even with their two early losses and no opponent scheduled for week 9, East St. Louis should still be expected to join the group of 256 playing in week 10. A week 8 trip to Edwardsville is probably their most likely loss left, but they can even survive that. If they suffer any other upsets it will be this week at home versus Belleville East or next week with O'Fallon, but I don't see anyone knocking off an East St. Louis team playing for their postseason lives if it comes to that.
Edwardsville(3-0): The easiest path to 5 wins for the Tigers is to take care of business against Belleville West in week 5 and Alton in week 6, which they should feel very comfortable with. Outside of those two games, Edwardsville is at worst a toss-up against O'Fallon/Belleville East/De Smet and I see them taking 2 or 3 of those. An upset over East Side would be some serious icing on the cake, but don't held your breath on that.
Belleville East(3-0): Lancer football is off to its best start in a long time. B-East has been reasonably tested so far for an undefeated, recording wins by finals of 24-21, 34-14, and 28-14. "Tested" will have a new definition for them in week 4 however as the pay a visit to an East St. Louis team looking to recover from a crushing defeat in the Lonestar state. Looking through the rest of their schedule, Belleville East should be viewed pretty favorably over Alton/Belleville West/Granite City to push them to at least 6 victories and a spot in the playoffs. Week 6/7 showdowns with O'Fallon/Edwardsville will represent a chance to break into the top-three grouping of the Southwestern Conference that has been stable for several years. Taking at least one of those would likely mean a 7 win season, which may make the difference of having to travel multiple hours for a postseason game.
O'Fallon(2-1): The Panthers are one of four teams in the league that should be present when the IHSA takes its top 256 finishers. Their path to five wins should feature wins against Belleville West/Alton/Cahokia in the final three weeks of the regular season. A six victory is well within reach when they host Belleville East in week 6, but week 5 is less hopeful since they will travel to the City of Champions(East STL). The biggest question mark left for them is what happens this Friday when they host Edwardsville, where I would give the Tigers a slight edge. Not to be overlooked is the fact that this will be their first meeting since the Panthers were screwed last postseason by a a three down "turnover on downs" during what would've likely been a game winning drive versus the Tigers.
Alton(1-2): An upset of 5A Triad last week put the Redbirds a win ahead of schedule after only defeating winless Belleville West during their last two seasons. Even if they take care of business with their manageable matchups versus Belleville West and Mt. Vernon, the Redbirds would need two more jaw-dropping upsets in their conference play to reach five wins.
Belleville West(1-2): The high of their week 1 knockoff of Mascoutah to end a 2+ season winning drought has worn off after losing back to back games by 24+. A chance to .500 awaits this weekend when they pay a visit to Alton, a rivalry that the Redbirds have a multi-game winning streak for. After that, a week 9 visit to the Hickman, MO Kewpies is the only game the Maroons have a strong chance at victory.

Mississippi Valley Conference
Highland(2-1): With a 28-0 loss to Mahomet-Seymour as their lone blemish, things are shaping up very nicely for the Bulldogs to show up in the 4A/5A brackets once again this fall. Highland, at the moment, should figure as a favorite for all six games remaining on their schedule, including Civic Memorial and Jersey who should move their win total to 4 fairly easily. Waterloo and St. Teresa are also two games Highland can enter as clear favorites based on what I've seen as well. The big circles on their remaining schedule is this Friday's visit to Mascoutah and then a week 7 visit to Triad. For those who do not recall, Highland stomped Mascoutah 56-0 in the regular season and Mascoutah shocked them three weeks later with a 55-42 upset in the playoffs. That thirst for revenge + a better resume so far makes Mascoutah the favorite for me, but only slightly since the rest of the MVC tends to struggle when visiting the Indians. Triad is another interesting matchup based on the rivalry alone. The Bulldogs have played more impressively so far, but rivalry games are tricky.
Mascoutah(1-2): Nobody else in the MVC feels like too safe a bet, but Mascoutah seems to have the next best path. Their week nine non-conference bout, Carbondale, is winnable. If they win that and take down Civic Memorial + Jersey as it seems likely, they still need to take one from Highland/Waterloo/Triad(a trio they went 0-3 against last fall). The big difference this time around is all three of those teams must come to Mascoutah where the Indians seem to have another gear. Where it gets messy is the MVC has four 1-2 teams(Mascoutah, Waterloo, Triad and Jersey) that are going to scratch and claw at each other to keep their paths to 5 alive. Still, I like the Indians chances to break through the blood rounds.
Triad(1-2): Their loss to Alton last week brought Triad from a strong playoff contender more into the tossup category. Their week nine opponent, Collinsville, is the toughest non-conference left for any MVC squad and is probably not a game they want to wait for to reach the magical number 5. Keeping the assumption rolling that Jersey and Civic Memorial are the leagues weakest, the Knights still need to find two more wins. I like how they matchup against Waterloo this Friday, but that still leaves them needing to take down Mascoutah/Highland. Mascoutah probably is the safer bet of the two.
Waterloo(1-2): Just like for Triad, their game this week is a key chance on the Bulldogs schedule. If the Bulldogs win there, the easiest path to five is to knock off Civic Memorial/Jersey and claim one more win over Freeburg in the regular season finale. Waterloo has been somewhat inconsistent this year, but a win over Highland or Mascoutah would not totally surprise.
Jersey(1-2): The Panthers should plan on defeating Civic Memorial this Friday and currently 0-3 Columbia in week 9. Putting points on the board has been the chief struggle thus far for Jersey, so slugging out wins over Waterloo/Mascoutah(the MVC's next lowest scorers) in low scoring affairs seems their best hope to surprise with a postseason appearance.
Civic Memorial(2-1): Despite being one of two league team's with a winning record, the Eagles seem likely to be left on the outside looking in. Their wins so far are over small schools Marquette Catholic and East Alton-Wood River. Last week, they suffered a blowout to Roxana. The rest of the season, Civic Memorial seems like an underdog but Taylorville and Jersey are their best shots at a win.

What did we learn week 3?!?!

We have reached the 1/3 mark of the season and lots to talk about - in terms of high school football in Illinois.

1 - That the Bartlett freshmen, who now probably qualify for AARP cards, likely could help these Bartlett Hawks.
2 - That Peoria, yah that wasn’t good.
3 - That Joe Sanchez is an all-timer in the MSL and Barrington is a problem this year.
4 - That playing nationally ranked out of state schools is great, not sure what we learn from a blowout.
5 - That Belleville East and Stagg are 3-0. Did we learn that this year they’re good?
6 - That I’m not sure what’s happened to Naz, but the oath to 5 wins isn’t great.
7 - That LZ has something on Stevenson
8 - That we didn’t need a bitterly cold and windy day last fall to tell us DGN is for real.
9 - That the more LWC keeps winning, the less it’s an upset.
10 - That Naperville North looks to be all the way back and a future problem for the 8A playoff field.

Those are my thoughts for this week.

Early Bird CS8 Final Standings

Early Bird Prediction for final conference standings

Rochester 9-0 (they've scored this proficiently WITHOUT QB1)

SHG 7-2 (watching film of Rochester's offense prior to week 5 will only be good for defensive schemes. The Rochester offense will get even faster week 6)

Chatham 7-2 (losing to SHG puts them in third)

U-High 7-2 (I think their defense will take notes from Rochester. Brody Walworth likes defense)

J-ville 5-4 (this pick was made before the loss of their QB1. Jury is still out on whether they can play rugby for 4 quarters)

Lincoln 4-5 (welcome back. And thank you for getting better while you were gone. Fans weren't coming to the games when you were on the schedule)

Springfield 4-5 (can they get on the same page for this record? I give them a 50% chance of trading spots with Southeast)

MacArthur 3-6 (their o line needs to work on its technique. If so, they could be playoff bound. If not, solid 3-6)

Southeast 2-7 (please surprise the conference. Your success is a good thing)

Lanphier 1-8 (fighting to not be in last place)

Ike 0-9 (that 7-4 season with a crazy 70-39 loss to Rochester is a long time ago)

Eye Openers: 3-0 Teams who are the real deal? Not so much?

Yesterday I broke down several of the 0-3/1-2 teams with a third of the season completed. Today...let's dig into the 3-0 schools and try to separate the contenders from the pretenders.

The Real Deal (3-0 Teams who can finish 9-0)

Mount Carmel/Loyola Academy - Again nothing will come easy in the CCL Blue for everyone here....but one of these two will most likely end up 9-0

Rochester- SHG awaits in Week 9 but will it be the old SHG we know and love or the SHG that got walloped in Week 1? Glenwood? Others? I see 9-0 for the Rockets.
.
Prairie Ridge- It gets harder starting this week against Huntley....but odds are this FVC team can make the 9-0 dream happen. Or not.

Richmond Burton- Tye Morris matchup in Week 6 will be tasty but otherwise? Not so much.

Antioch- The Och so far is blowing doors off and I don't see too many tests in the regular season.

The Maybe Real Deal (3-0 Teams who have an outside shot at a 9-0 record)

Carmel- Again the Corsairs are the real deal but the crossover games are rough ones.

ICCP- The Knights have a great team but Loyola looms in Week 7

Glenwood_ Rochester remains the biggest challenge along with SHG.

Cary Grove- Still have to play the FVC Super Bowl in CG in two weeks.

Seneca The Irish are rolling this season and weill have some tests but they seem like they have a shot at 9-0 here.

Morris/Sycamore- I can see the winner getting to 9-0, but not easy whatsoever.

Morton/Dunlap- Both still have to go thru Washington and Metamora.

Hersey- Teams like Prospect are lurking in Week 6, but win that and I like the Huskies chances at 9-0.

Barrington- Hoffman and Palatine await the Broncos...but 9-0 regular season record? It's doable

Lake Zurich- Da Bears will still need to beat the likes of Warren and LF.

Boylan/Hononegah- The winner of this Week 6 showdown most likely runs the table in the NIC-10.

Argo/Evergreen Park- Both would still need to get past Richards and others.

Oswego- The Panthers are suddenly looking like a conference front runner so far.

Marion- The Wildcats are always a force in the South Seven and the remaining schedule looks winnable to me.

Edwardsville/Belleville East- Both still have to get thru East Side

Glenbard South/South Elgin- Winner goes 9-0? I think GBE will also have a say here.

York/Downers Grove North- Both York and DGN are strong team this season but the Dukes will get tested each week for the most part from here on out. The Trojans are rolling but getting out of the Silver clean is a big ask.

Maine West- The Warriors are out strong and the remainder of the schedule I feel is winnable.

Geneseo/Quincy- I've liked Quincy since last year....but Geneseo? The win last week over Moline was an eye opening win for sure.

The Struggle Is Real (3-0 Teams most likely to not remain undefeated)

Champaign Centennial- Naw.

St Rita- The rocky road begins this Friday and just remains rocky.

Montini Catholic- The Broncos are out of the gates strong but Benet, Provi and Rice remain.

Deerfield- The schedule just gets header each week from here on out.

Wheaton Academy- The Warriors are playing welll again but the remaining schedule is strong. Never say never and WA will be competitive in every remaining game.

Christ The King- I just don't like the remaining matchups here.

Geneva- The Dukane is so damn strong again in 2023....the Vikings are a great story so far but I just get the feeling someone gets them in the regular season.

Huntley- Prairie Ridge remains along with CG and others.

Sandwich A program that didn't field a team in 2022 to now? Wow.....but reality strikes this week against Richmond Burton.

Mundelein- Another team I'm rooting for no doubt but the slate just gets harder and harder this fall.

TF North- Thrilled for my alma matter getting off to a 3-0 start, but trouble awaits starting this week in the Other Fractional.

Riverside-Brookfield- Kankakee and Crete await.

West Aurora- No. Love ya Nate Eimer and Blackhawks but no.

LW Central/Stagg/Bradley- Someone is beating someone here. Bradley also has LW Beast at Beast this week as well.

WB6 and TRAC week 4 look ahead

WB6 Week 4 Look ahead

Sterling over Galesburg: Sterling got a tough win last week and should be trending in the right direction now. Galesburg took a long bus ride to Indiana which did not end well for them. Now the Silver Streaks are being asked to rebound from all that and take a trip to Sterling? Sorry, but nope. Golden Warriors win another tough game.

Quincy over Moline: The Maroons are looking to rebound from their week 3 loss to Geneseo where they had trouble stopping the run. Now they get a Quincy team that is firing on all cylinders and can hurt you on the ground and the air. Quincy has also looked impressive on the defensive side of the ball. Despite the long bus ride to Quincy, Moline will play their hearts out to try an avoid a 1-3 record…but I think the Blue Devils overwhelm them after halftime.

Rock Island over Sterling Newman: 6A vs 1A? Sure, why not. Sterling Newman is tough as they come small school wise, but have had a lot of trouble generating points. Rocky is simply bigger and faster and it will show as Rocky will get it’s first win of the year.

Geneseo over United Township: UT has looked a lot better this year compared to last year, but they cant seem to put a complete game together. Geneseo has been a team on a mission this season, knocking off Moline last week being the current high point. UT will give the Leafs a tough game, but in the end, Geneseo will be ringing their victory bell.

TRAC Week 4 Look ahead

Kewanee over Bureau Valley: Both teams are coming off of good wins last week. BV plays super solid defense and tried to grind you down with run. Kewanee throws it a bit more and their defense is coming off back to back shut outs. I think this will be a low scoring affair with the Boilermakers edging out the Storm by the end of the game.

Rock Island over Sterling Newman: Already covered this one above. My hope for this game is both teams come out injury free so they can get back to focusing on conference play.

Hall over Mendota: Mendota has been a mess of a program this season, getting outscored 151 to 8. Hall has been up and down this season, recently coming off a 18-8 loss to BV. Hall will be looking to get their passing game back on track. They should find a lot of success against a down Trojans squad. Hall wins big.

Princeton over Orion: Princeton rebounded nicely last week, blanking Sterling Newman and will now face an Orion team seeking to right the ship after an unpleasant meeting with Morrison. Orion has the size upfront to match the Tigers, but I do not think they have the speed. I think this will be a close, back and forth game that Princeton pulls out in the 4th quarter.

Morrison over Erie-Prophetstown: Morrison is scary this season. They smother on defense and they overwhelm with speed on offense. EP has yet to find a lot of success on the field offense wise. I think Morrison takes care of business and starts the running clock by the early 3rd quarter.

Monmouth-Roseville over Riverdale: MR has been in gear since getting blown out week 1. Their ability to run the ball has played a huge part in that. Riverdale…well…it’s been a rough re-introduction to varsity football and sadly it does not get any easier this well. MR get the running clock going by halftime.

Rockridge over Sherrard: Sherrard has the sad distinction of being that team that is super tough and is right there in ever game…but just can’t find the win. Til last week of course when they beat Warrensburg-Latham. Rockridge has been back to doing Rockridge things since their loss week 1, running and throwing the ball with great success against Riverdale. This will be a close, hard fought game, but I think the Rockets of Rockridge are just a little bit better.

Eye Openers: Which 0-3/1-2 Teams Can Dig Out Of The Hole?

Just a Week 3 breakdown deal here some quick thoughts and observations......I'll also do something tomorrow like 3-0 teams who can survive and those with trouble ahead.

Red Light (0-3/1-2 could be in trouble)

Nazareth Academy 0-3- Sure I know last year this was pretty much the same deal...but this time around the remaining schedule is much tougher in my opinion starting Friday at ICCP. Hopefully the Road Runners can repeat history this year but for now I have to have them here.

Glenbrook South 0-3- The early schedule has been BRUTAL and with still New Trier Prospect and Swagger High still left to play.....not good.

St Edward 0-3- Rough rough remainder of the regular season remains for the Wave

Glenbard North 0-3-2 Never count out the Panthers and Ryan Wilkens but with the hard part of the Dukane still ahead of them....

Rolling Meadows 0-3- Shocking. The Mustangs have been in every game so far...and the odds are better here for them than most others...but it won't be easy. Must win Thursday against Deerfield.

Hinsdale Central 0-3- Wow another shocker. The non con has been good...and with the remaining Silver slate ahead of them, hopefully the Red Devils can continue to develop younger kids for 2024.

Yellow Light (0-3/1-2 in a holding pattern and why)

Plainfield South 0-3- Not looking good but being in the SWPEast is truly a blessing for those less fortunate.

Downers Grove South 0-3- The Mustangs have struggled scoring points so far... but the Gold has not been golden so far and if the Stangs can get a win this week against Willowbrook then maybe?

St. Ignatius 1-2- The realigned CCL/ESCC this year did no favors to many schools including the Wolfpack. I won't count them out yet but the remaining road is not easy whatsoever.

Neuqua Valley 1-2- Sybil of IHSA football. Love me some NV Cats and Bill E but I have no idea what we will get from NV from week to week. Again this team has risen from the grave more than a bad B horror movie over the years....we'll see.

New Trier 1-2 The non con schedule has been really strong for NT and the next two weeks are scary hard (Barrington/Swagger High) but I can also see this team get on a late roll and find a way to 5.

Marian Catholic 1-2- The Spartans have a really talented team but they just need to kick things into gear....like now this week against the mighty D.

Danville 1-2- The Vikings have played a few of the better teams so far and should be ok with the remainder of the schdule and get to 5 wins.

Bishop McNamara 1-2- I have heard not good things about B Mac so far and they have one remaining game agaisnt an opponent under .500 (St Ed).

St. Patrick 1-2- If the Shamrocks could only get Loyola, Marist and Carmel off the schedule...

Reed Custer 1-2- The Comets knew they would be young in 2023 and they indeed are playing like a young team. I can see a path to 5-4 here and a win this week over Herscher is a must.

Marengo 1-2- In Paulie Forsyth I trust. Forget last week and focus on the remaining games.

Lakes 0-3- The good news is that the remaining schedule (minus say Wauconda) looks winnable.

Grayslake North 1-2- See above and outside of The Och and Wauconda....winnable.

Carbondale 1-2 The Terriers have talent but have run into some good teams early and minus a few teams (Cahokia/Marion) I see winnable games remaining.

TF South 0-3- Even this TFN grad feels for the Red Wolves and Coach Padjen. A must win this week at the Right Side of Fractional is a must....and South still has a chance I believe.

Bartlett 1-2- The Bartlett freshmen are now in nursing homes and in the Wacky Upstate 8.....anything is possible I guess. But GBE GBS and SE remain monster challenges.

Glenbard West 1-2- Damn. Injuries are killing the Hitters so far and IF they can shore up the ship before say Lyons and a few other try to sink it? Never say never here....and stranger things have happened before.

Crystal Lake Central 1-2 Two close losses to quality opponents (CG and Huntley) but more potholes await here.

Crystal Lake South 1-2- Again lots of traffic remaining to manuever here for the Gators.

Green Light (1-2 Teams who should be Ok)

Marist 1-2- No sweat. I think.

Simeon 1-2- Hello CPL Red.

Taft 1-2 Hello CPL Red (minus Simeon and MP on the schedule).

Kenwood Academy 1-2 Hello CPL Red and the Broncos do have MP Simweon and Taft remaining so they have the hardest path of the three.

Kaneland 1-2- The remaining schedule won't be easy but the Knights should get to 5 wins.

Palatine 1-2- Tough two early losses to quality opponents (STCN/Swagger High) but the Pirates should be able to right the ship. I think.

Mascoutah 1-2- Still lots of speed and athleticism here.

Warren Township 1-2- Micah is sedated and doing well. The Blue Devils will sort things out and start putting it together. I still think this team could win the North Suburban. Time will tell.

Richards 1-2 The Doggies should be ok but the biggest question is Argo and EP for real in 2023? And Lemont also remains on the schedule.

Crete Monee 1-2-The Warriors are young as heck and Professor Konecki is cookin something good up for the remainder of the year. Expect Crete to be ready for Week 9.

Oswego East 1-2- The Wolves should be ok and this Friday is a must win over Plain South.

Yorkville 1-2 Anyone else surprised by the loss to Joliet West here? The Foxes are still a very good team this season and will battle all comers in the SWPWest. I think.

Plainfield North 1-2- Too good and too strong to be down for too long.

Speed Pass (1-2 teams who could win out the rest of the season)

East St. Louis 1-2- Lost to MC and an FCS team from Texas......the Flyers will be just fine.
