Five Friday night games to end the regular season. MacArthur travels to Jacksonville with the winner making the 5A playoffs and the loser likely seeing their season end. SHG and Chatham have their rivalry game, while Eisenhower and Lanphier clash with one team getting their first win and the other going 0-9.

Lanphier (0-8) at Eisenhower (0-8)
Both teams have had very difficult seasons, with almost all of their games being running clocks. Eisenhower did almost beat Southeast Week 1, while Lanphier lost to them by 42 points in Week 7. Eisenhower also has the home field advantage and should get Coach Dampeer his first win. Eisenhower 22 Lanphier 12

Southeast (3-5) at Springfield (5-3)
Springfield should get its 6th win pretty easily. Southeast is starting Sophomores at QB and RB, so there is some hope for 2022. Springfield 46 Southeast 14

Rochester (7-1) at U High (3-5)
There is still a significant gap between U High as the 7th best team in the CS8 versus the top 6 teams. Rochester will try to get a running clock as soon as possible and get the reserves in. Rochester 45 U High 7

SHG (7-1) at Chatham (6-2)
Chatham’s best chance to win this rivalry game is to grind out long drives with the running of QB Ahlberg and RB Smith. Their defense does not match up that well against SHG’s offense. Chatham is aggressive, and they gang tackle on defense. However, they lack the size and athleticism of their 2018 and 2019 teams. SHG should be able to run or pass on them. SHG would like to go up several scores early and take the expected large home crowd out of the game. Chatham wants to stay close early and then catch a break or two later. SHG has only given up more than 13 points once. Chatham could keep it closer than my prediction but the more likely outcome is a fairly comfortable SHG win. SHG 45 Chatham 20

MacArthur (4-4) at Jacksonville (4-4)
The winner makes the playoffs and the loser is probably out. I thought in August that Jacksonville had the best schedule in the CS8, with all 5 playoff teams from 2019 at home. 1 win against a 2019 playoff team would likely get the Crimsons into the 5A playoffs. They are 0-4 so far, coming close but losing narrowly to Chatham and Springfield and getting thumped by Rochester and SHG. Jacksonville’s best chance, like Chatham, is to grind out drives, not get behind too much early, and rely on a large noisy home crowd for support. Though it didn’t impact last week’s outcome against Springfield, MacArthur had very few fans at the game. Mac has a balanced offense which should give Jacksonville trouble. One missed tackle on a short pass can lead to a TD by several Mac players. Mac QB Brylan Phillips played a great game last week. If he can duplicate that or even come close, Mac should be heading to the 5A playoffs. MacArthur 37 Jacksonville 27

All.... I like MacArthur by 14 plus in the upcoming game. At 5-4 the Generals will not be a typical first round soft opponent against an 8-1 or 9-0 squad.

The playoff front once again has evolved. Rochester continues to inch now toward class 5A. And Cahokia is like a ping pong ball in terms of seeding. Will they play TDW? Do they even have a field when the Comanches come calling Saturday afternoon? (lol) Will TDW forfeit? If not will the Comanches find someone else to play with the opportunity of getting more playoff points . Who knows.... Ratsy

Sorry, my message wasn’t clear. I put my email in Edgy’s conversation icon for you, which on my screen is in the upper right corner and looks almost like a square but with the bottom having a point. I am also tech challenged.

All Finals
Eisenhower 18 Lanphier 7. Congratulations to Coach Dampeer on his first win and to Eisenhower for ending a 32 game losing streak.

Springfield 59 Southeast 14. Springfield finishes 6-3 and will be in 6A.

Rochester 47 U High 0. Rochester wins the CS8 title. Hank Beatty ran for 4 TD’s.

SHG 58 Chatham 13. Another very impressive win for the Cyclones. They running clocked on the road a team that will make the 6A playoffs.

Jacksonville 23 MacArthur 20. Jacksonville retook the lead with 4 minutes left and held on. Mac came up just short on a 2nd straight hard fought road win. Hugely impressed that Jacksonville held Mac to 20 points after watching them score 42 on Springfield last week. This gets Jacksonville their 5th win, and they will be in the 5A playoffs.

5 CS8 teams will make the playoffs.

Chatham and Springfield are both 6-3 and will be in 6A. Both should be on the road next week. Neither, I imagine, wants to travel to 7-2 East St Louis.

5-4 Jacksonville will be on the road in 5A against a high seed.

SHG is 8-1 and should be in 4A. The Cyclones are teed up to make a deep playoff run.

Rochester is 8-1 and could be in 4A but late talk has them more likely in 5A. We’ll find out tomorrow. In 4A, they’d have to get by both SHG and Joliet Catholic in all likelihood. In 5A, there could be 2-3 unbeaten teams seeded higher than Rochester in the South bracket.

Can’t wait for the drawing tomorrow.

6A Playoff Pairings
In the South bracket, Springfield (6-3) is a #9 seed at #8 Rock Island (6-3). This should be a competitive game. Springfield‘s defense, which has given up 36 points or more 4 times, has to step up for them to get to the second round.

Also in the South, Chatham (6-3) is a #10 seed at #7 Crete Monee (6-3). Crete has played a very difficult schedule, and this will be a big challenge for the banged up Titans who were roughed up last night by SHG. Tough match up for the Titan Defense, which has given up 49 and 58 points in recent weeks.

5A Playoff Pairings
In the South bracket, #14 seed Jacksonville (5-4) travels to #3 Mahomet (9-0). They are definitely the underdog. However, Mahomet has only played 2 teams which made the playoffs, and they were both 6-3. Jacksonville absolutely played a more difficult schedule. This could be a close game.

4A Playoff Pairings
In the South bracket #1 seed Rochester (8-1) hosts Cahokia (5-4). Cahokia has had an interesting season, playing some good out of state teams close and having had 3 forfeits in the last 5 weeks. Not sure if only playing 6 games helps or hurt them. Glad it’s a home game for the Rockets and don’t expect them to take it lightly.

Also in the South, #3 SHG (8-1) should have no trouble at home with #14 Columbia (6-3). If they both keep winning, Rochester and SHG would meet in the semi finals.

According to the SJR, Springfield Coach Roy Gully has submitted his resignation effective at the end of the season. Springfield is 6-3 and is at 6-3 Rock Island Friday night. The timing of the resignation announcement seems odd to me, couldn’t it wait until the season was actually over? Not sure if this motivates or distracts the Senators.

All.... I had heard that over the weekend as well. Reading the article today he sites D186 among numerous reasons. I remember he tossed a little dust at them when he felt 186 did not back him enough when a couple of Senator football kids got tossed from a game. Wanting more from the district to do something. If you recall in protest the following game he decided not to coach. Messing with your employer in a public way for everyone to see can be tricky. Ratsy
