CPL Pick 'Em: Prep Bowl Week 10

With the state playoffs happening for 6 of the top 8 in the city we're left with a single matchup...

Taft Eagles vs Brooks College Prep Eagles Thursday 6pm at Lane
Well isn't this matchup for the birds. The Eagles of the Northwest Side take on the Eagles of the Far South Side. Gonna go out on a limb here and say the Eagles take the game but the Redcoats secure the true victory, small stage practice before the big state games this weekend.

What's the lineup look like for the CCL? Maybe we can break down those matchups too.

Week 9 CCL/ESCC RockSoup® Prediction Thread presented by Ignazio®

As our weekly author tours the Hill Country and samples its many varietals, we re-focus our energies to make-or-break week in the Greatest Football Conference in America.

Biggest surprises & disappointments

Not withstanding a big playoff run who are the biggest surprises & disappointments? Surprises? Argo & Chicago Christian were picked to be bottom of the barrell yet they are in the playoffs!!! Argo lower level teams look pretty good too.Disappointments? Kankakee underperformed so far especially getting that Mac transfer but hard to really pick.Any team who didn’t put a product on the field I’d have to say was a disappointment. Not the kids on those teams though who wanted to play.

8A predictions

I pray for Mike O’Brien’s prediction to come true and setup a Warren/LWE matchup in the quarters. The thread for that game would be so entertaining.
O’Brien’s Picks

LWE’s close call last night will refocus them. Seems inevitable that LWE and LA matchup in Champaign. I see the Illini’s magical season rubbing off on Coach H and the Ramblers lifting the trophy on Memorial Stadium as the Orange and Blue return to town with the Land of Lincoln Trophy.

Sterling's last 12 playoff opponents

Just an observation regarding Sterling's playoff opponents since 2017:

2017: St. Viator, Kaneland, Marian Central Catholic, Chicago Phillips
2018: Chicago Phoenix, Chicago Brooks, Rockford Boylan, Montini
2019: Chicago Heights Marian, St. Rita
2021: St. Patrick
2022: St. Viator

They haven't matched up with many schools (just one - Kaneland) that are similar in make up (meaning "downstate" public schools).

WB6/TRAC regular season review/playoff preview and general thoughts

A few general thoughts (not about the WB6 or TRAC) first:
- Not that the IHSA or CCL/ESCC planned this, but they had two really compelling games on Saturday that came down to the wire. Everyone rightly is thinking about how much fun Mount Carmel-Loyola was, but I'm also talking about St. Patrick-St. Viator, which saw some wild swings at the end of the fourth quarter and ended up going into overtime. This was a play-in for the playoffs; St. Patrick, after the loss, was the first team out. Tough way to end the season, and I hope St. Pat's wins the Prep Bowl.
- Good for Madison making the playoffs again, especially with only eight games scheduled.

Now, for the Week 9 reviews and playoff previews (I will do this every week for these teams):
Western Big Six
Moline 42, Geneseo 13 - Moline dominated this game and they are really playing extremely well to end the year. I don't know that I think Geneseo played badly, just that they weren't able to physically compete with Moline.
Quincy 47, Rock Island 42 - What an entertaining game. Rock Island went to Quincy and was up 28-0, in a must-win, before the Blue Devils managed to come all the way back. Impressive resolve for Quincy, but spare a thought for the Rocks, who gave a really good team their best shot with the season on the line and almost got the early knockout. Firpo against Dempsey, in some ways.
Sterling 63, UTHS 33 - UT's problem this year hasn't really been the offense, as they've managed to put up points. Sterling ran wild and they've solid momentum going into a home game.
Galesburg 58, Alleman 8 - Galesburg had their moments this year (losing by only 14 to playoff teams in Dunlap and Geneseo), and this was a nice win for them. Unfortunately more of the same for the Pioneers.
I was 4-0 last week.
This week:
Moline (10) over DeKalb (23) in the first round of 7A - DeKalb looks like a very speedy team, and this will be a tough matchup, as playoff games should be. At home, if Moline can play up to their potential, I think they'll be OK. Moline has a tough but reasonable draw, and would go to Yorkville or Libertyville second round with a win.
Glenwood (8) over Quincy (9) in the first round of 6A South - I think this is a very close matchup, and I do think Quincy would win at a neutral site. Given the home game, I have the Titans with a slight edge, but a Devil win would not surprise me. With a win, Quincy would host Blue Island Eisenhower or Lemont, both of whom would have to make the long cross-state drive.
Sterling (5) over St. Viator (12) in the first round of 5A North - CCL teams are always tough, and Sterling learned that last year, but I am not especially impressed with Viator and I think the Warriors will get this at home. They would be going to Chicago to play a CPS team in the second round and Sterling must be looking to a potential trip to Sycamore in the quarters.
Carterville (1) over Geneseo (16) in the first round of 4A South - Geneseo is a good team, and I don't think Carterville is even the best team in this quarter of the 4A bracket, but they're good and that is a long trip for the Leafs. Geneseo would have a second round game at East Alton-Wood River, or hosting Coal City. (Incidentally,my pick for this bracket is a semifinal matchup between Rochester and SHG - one last Leonard Bowl!

TRAC
Morrison 25, Erie/Prophetstown 14 - Two mirror-image teams - Morrison started the season badly but ended up with three straight wins, while EP looked terrible down the stretch. Impressive ride of the momentum for the Mustangs, who get to the playoffs now.
Princeton 48, Monmouth-Roseville 0 - No surprise here. This isn't a knock on Monmouth-Roseville either, Princeton is just so dominant.
Rockridge 49, Orion 18 - Not the way Orion wanted to end the season - exactly the way Rockridge did. Nice way to finish up the regular season after three unimpressive games in the middle of the year for Rockridge.
Ottawa Marquette 40, Sherrard 7 - Tough one for Sherrard, who ran into a buzzsaw and had two big losses at the end of the year. They saw a lot of progress this year and things are hopefully looking up for them going into 2023.
Kewanee 10, Newman 7 - Upset special! Good way to finish up for the Boilermakers, while Newman's lack of offensive production is going to be scaring them going into the playoffs.
Hall 44, Bureau Valley 34 - BV had beeen shut out three of their last four games, so a season-high in scoring for the Storm surprised me. But good for Hall, who won four of their last five to get to the playoffs after a 1-4 start.
St. Bede 39, Mendota 20 - Not a world-beater performance for the Bruins, but good for them to get back into the win column and get a team to come to Peru for the first round.
I was 6-1 last week (missed on Kewanee).
This week:
Sacred Heart-Griffin (2) over Hall (15) in the first round of 4A South - Great present for the Red Devils, who get the dubious honor of going to the top-ranked Cyclones. I don't expect it to be close, unfortunately for Hall. If they win, they would host Richland County or go to Waterloo.
Princeton (1) over Peotone (16) in the first round of 3A North - Not as easy as some 1-16 matchups might be, but I think Princeton will be just fine. They will host Genoa-Kingston or go to Elmwood/Brimfield in the second round.
Stillman Valley (5) over Monmouth-Roseville (12) in the first round of 3A North - I don't know if Stillman Valley would beat Byron again, but I think they'd beat Genoa-Kingston again, so their 8-1 record seems fair, and I don't think MR gets this one. Monmouth-Roseville would host IC Catholic or Chicago King second round. (Incidentally, an IC-Stillman Valley game in the second round would be very fun. This bracket is absolutely stacked, with lots of serious state championship contenders.)
Rockridge (4) over Newman (13) in the first round of 2A North - A rematch game, and Newman is skidding in. Their defense will have to be absolutely lights-out to give them any chance, and I think Rockridge gets their points. The winner would face Mercer County or Bloomington Central Catholic. Rockridge and Mercer County (the old Aledo) have a long and storied rivalry with multiple playoff matchups, most famously the 1998 state champsionship game, and seeing that renewed would be pretty cool. No offense to Newman here.
Forreston (10) over St. Bede (7) in the first round of 1A North - I really, really thought hard about picking St. Bede, but Forreston is much better than their record suggests. Their four losses, all to playoff teams, are by 10, 6, 2, and 14 points. St. Bede's momentum isn't good and even though Forreston's last two conference games have been losses, they're playing well and I think they beat the Bruins. The winner would play Chicago Hope or Chicago Corliss in the second round.
Ottawa Marquette (3) over Morrison (14) in the first round of 1A North - Ottawa Marquette is really good, and I think they're better than the Mustangs, but don't count out Morrison in an upset-alert game. The winner will see either Iroquois West or Dakota.

General season reviews of the WB6 and TRAC:
- Coaches of the year: Mike Morrissey (Moline) and Randy Tieman (Hall)/Steve Snider (Morrison). In the Western Big Six, Rick Little and Larry Johnsen deserve a lot of credit for turning their programs around, but Morrissey has built a juggernaut at Moline and proved he didn't just rely on Alec Ponder and Matthew Bailey. In the TRAC, I had to hedge, and credit to Ryan Pearson for keeping Princeton so stinking good, but Morrison and Hall's turnarounds are too big of stories to ignore.
- Games of the year (not including conference championship games such as Sterling-Moline): Quincy over Rock Island/Sterling over Quincy, and Morrison over Hall - Quincy hosted two wild, wild games against solid teams, losing to Sterling in OT and coming all the way back against Rocky, while Morrison recovered a fumble to seal an overtime win over Hall featuring the two Cardiac Kid teams of the TRAC.
- Turning points: Riley Fuller and Orion's missed extra points - Orion lost to Newman in Week 3 by a 13-12 score. If they win that game, heaven knows what happens, and they missed two extra points to get the loss. In Week 4, Rock Island had come back from a 20-3 deficit to get within 3 points of Moline, and they had the momentum - then Fuller took the ball 64 yards on the first play to swing things back to Moline and put things to bed. Fuller is a contender for conference MVP.

WSC Playoff Outlook

6 teams playoff teams this year for the West Suburban Conference. 4 from the Silver and 2 from the Gold. 2 7A and 4 8A. Can this be the year the conference gets an 8A team back to the quarters?

7A
DGN- Should beat Lincoln Park in the first round and then get a home game vs Mt. Carmel in the second round. DGN seems to be on the rise but no chance against the Caravan.
Willowbrook- Down year for the Warriors. Rematch with Wheaton North in round 1. Can’t see them beating the Falcons.

8A
DGS- Finally back at the top of the conference but will be one and done in the playoffs Vs Palatine.
LT- Got a long awaited win over HC and closed with a nice win over DGN. Couldn’t quite hang with York or GW. Should have a good game with Naperville Central. One of the tighter first round matchups. Central has a good D. Low scoring game is a tossup but I would slightly favor NC given LT’s playoff history.
GW- Had their chances Vs the Dukes but couldn’t get it done. Seem to be getting healthy at the right time of the year. Rematch with Lockport. Hitters should get revenge this year and move on and be favorites Vs Glenbrook South or HF. Semifinal matchup with LWE is a realistic goal for the Hitters.
York- First undefeated season in school history and first WSS crown in a while. Tough draw again. Should be able to get by Oswego East but said that last year about Minooka from the same conference. Second round reward is either Naperville North or Marist. If they survive then Palatine or Minooka. Semifinal vs LA should be the goal.

WSC Wk 9 Prediction Thread

Well West Suburban Conference fans, here we are - Week 9.

DGS and York have secured the Gold and Silver titles and punched their post season ticket. Glenbard West, LT and DGN have also secured playoff appearances - GW and LT in 8A, and DGN in 7A. Still on the bubble - Willowbrook, OPRF, and HC. It's pretty likely if all 3 win, all three will get in. And if you are able to keep up with the multiple playoff prediction threads, there are scenarios where OPRF and HC could qualify for the playoffs even with a loss. I won't get into it all here but will point out OPRF has 2 more points than HC, and HC cannot make those points up. Personally - if it's do or die, I feel better about HC beating GW than I do about OPRF beating York. However, if York gets caught looking forward, it could definitely happen.

Here are the real questions, and one's that will affect our pick'em game - Is Morton going to play spoiler on the road? Does DGN or LT favor better by winning or losing this game? With more to play for, can injured and young HC match up with GW and ensure they play next week? How important is an undefeated season to York; more important than an OPRF trying to qualify?

There was some movement in our overall standings in Wk 8, mostly due to selectors not turning in their picks prior to the Thursday night game. This week, there are 2 x Thursday night games, so please be advised.

Our standing going into the final week of the regular season are:
T1 @Panthers1211 55-8
T1 @MS4EVER 55-8
3 @Alexander32 54-9
4 @Fishwater41 54-8
5 @brucealmighy 51-11
6 @chuck998 50-13
7 @Cross Bones 49-13
T8 @stl705 48-15
T8 @RD_Watcher 48-15
10 @BTOWNDawgs 46-17
11 @LakeCtyNewt 46-15
12 @Nevada Dude 43-20
13 @WBWarriorWatcher 41-14 (missed Wk6)
14 @USD24 40-9 (missed Wk1)

The Week 9 Games are:
Addison Trail (2-6) vs. Hinsdale South (3-5) Thursday, 20th
Willowbrook (4-4) vs. Morton (3-5) Thursday, 20th
Downers Grove South (5-3) vs. Leyden (2-6) Saturday, 22nd
Proviso West (2-6) vs. Proviso East (0-8)
Lyons Township (6-2) vs. Downers Grove North (6-2)
Oak Park-River Forest (4-4) vs. York (8-0)
Hinsdale Central (4-4) vs. Glenbard West (7-1) Saturday, 22nd

ICE week 9

Three likely snoozers and one game that has some playoff implications.

Coal City (5-3) @ Streator (2-6)
Coal City got to experience the Comets last week. After a nice showing by CC in the first quarter, R-C eventually imposed their will. CC has improved throughout the year in my opinion, and Streator has packed it in. Streator's QB and WR are good players and might hook up for a score - maybe even 2, but they can't play defense and Coal City will roll 49-14.

Manteno (2-6) @ Wilmington (7-1)
Same story as above. Manteno has some decent young skill kids but can't stop the run. That's pretty much all you need to hear to know Wilmo will roll. Same score 49-14.

Herscher (1-7) @ Reed-Custer (8-0)
This game will just be ugly. I'd expect R-C backups in before halftime. 60-0.

Lisle (4-4)
@ Peotone (5-3)
Peotone has already basically locked up a playoff spot, but has pretty low playoff points. At 4-4, Lisle obviously needs this game to get in. There are probably a lot of similar sized schools that are rooting for the Lions, as any team smaller than SHG that can sneak in will help push SHG up. Calpreps has Tone as a 7-point favorite. Looking at common opponents, Peotone has played the good teams better than Lisle. Lisle is coming off a blowout over Manteno. What's it all mean? I have no idea, but I'll pick Lisle in an upset. Coach Parpet finds a way to get it done. 22-20

Conant at Lincoln-Way East

Saw this pairing and could reflect on where the LWE programs first year as an all junior program made the playoffs. Got DESTROYED in Hoffman Estates. Coach Zvonar has made the playoffs every year since thankfully to a great community suppport system. Looking at the records for Conant I don’t see any mention of injuries to reflect a late season swoon? 2001 was a long time ago and I believe Lincoln-Way East has improved some since that first and only meeting. Anyone have the Conant story this season? Scouting reports and trends would be appreciated. Just hope the Griffins can compete. ( CrossBones reference).

618 Talk Week 8/9: Fight for Seeding

A weekly thread to talk about some of the bigger teams and conferences from the 618(southern Illinois).

I’m not going to go as in depth as normal for each game this week as I want to break down the playoff outlook for every team in contention or that has qualified. But here are just the scores from the week with a short note for each conference:

South Seven
Cahokia(4-4) 56-6 Althoff(4-4)
Mt. Vernon(4-4) 35-7 Centralia(5-3)
Marion(5-3) 40-7 Carbondale(2-6)

These scores left us with a four way tie for the S7 crown between Cahokia, Mt. Vernon, Marion and Centralia. After going through a few tie breakers, Mt. Vernon ends up with the conference’s automatic playoff berth. In this case it was least points allowed against the other three teams they were tied with.

Southwestern
East St. Louis(6-2) 24-7 Edwardsville(6-2)
Belleville East(4-4) 41-0 Belleville West(0-8)
O’Fallon(7-1) 52-0 Alton(1-7)

Nothing really unexpected here, but Edwardsville was down only 6-0 at the half against the Flyers. The Tigers have been bit by a second half slowdown several times this year.

Mississippi Valley
Triad(6-2) 28-13 Waterloo(5-3)
Highland(7-1) 56-0 Mascoutah(5-3)
Jersey(3-5) 42-0 Civic Memorial(1-7)

Triad proved themselves as the clear second best of the MVC and Highland continued their dominate campaign. The Bulldogs have hit a running clock in all but two games so far: a 31-28 loss to 8A Edwardsville and a 35-0 win over what will likely be a 7 win Triad team.

So who needs a win to get in?
Belleville East, Cahokia, and Althoff all stand at 4-4 and will certainly be in with a win thanks to their troves of playoff points.
-Cahokia has a very tall task this week, as they visit O’Fallon. This would be a huge upset, but with 40 playoff points currently, the Comanches could still be alive at 4-5.
-Belleville East is in a much more comfortable position and may already be printing their playoff shirts. All they need is a win over a 1-7 Granite City team(their lone win came against 1A Madison that stands at 4-3).
-Althoff is also sitting pretty with a week 9 trip to Alton. The Redbirds are 1-7 and have only defeated 0-8 Belleville West so far.

5-3 Teams Looking for Insurance
Playoff points for our 5-3 teams are as follows: Marion(33), Centralia(37), Mascoutah(39) and Waterloo(37). I think all of these teams are effectively in, but that shouldn’t stop them from giving their all for another victory.
-Marion has a long haul up to Mattoon on Friday night. They should be able to overcome the long trip against a 1-7 Mattoon squad that has struggled to a 1-7 record.
-Centralia has an interesting matchup with Collinsville. The 7A Kahoks stand at 7-1, but play mostly 4A/5A squads. I still would pick Collinsville here though, especially coming off an overtime win over previously undefeated Centennial last week.
-Waterloo will see how they measure up against the Freeburg Midgets for their regular season finale. My advice would be to take the Bulldogs in a rebound victory over the 3-5 hosts.
-Mascoutah could sneak their way into a home playoff game with their wagon full of playoff points. But for that to matter, they will need to tame a 2-6 Carbondale team that has played better than their record at times.

6-2 Squads Fighting for Home Sweet Home
Generally speaking, a seventh win will position your team for a first round home game. Groups looking to hit this marker include Triad, East St. Louis and Edwardsville.
-Triad, who hold 37 playoff points at this point, have looked like a much better team in the second half of the season. Expect that trend to continue this week as they battle a 4-4 Lincoln team looking for their first playoff berth since Reagan won reelection.
-East St. Louis will cross the mighty Mississippi this Friday to take on De Smet. The Missouri based Spartans have been tough in recent years, but they have fallen off this year and stand at 4-4
-Edwardsville will also march into Missouri for a conflict with Christian Brothers. The Cadets are favorites here according to computers and their 7-1 record.

Highland and O’Fallon Aim to Scratch Off an Eighth Win
These two exciting teams stand at 7-1, but will their final games be exciting? Probably not.
-O’Fallon will take on the Cahokia Comanches. As I said before, Cahokia will likely need this one to make the postseason but I don’t expect them to.
-Highland will take on the Flaming Hearts of Effingham, who are currently 5-3. This reminds me of a story during the LaPorta days of a Highland vs Effingham game in the postseason. The team meal the eve of the game gave food poisoning to many Bulldogs. It didn’t slow down Highland then and I don’t think food poisoning would be enough this Friday either, because this Highland team is playing some great ball.

Where Would Playoff Qualifiers Land?
Althoff(1A/2A)
Waterloo(4A)
Cahokia(4A)
Highland(4A/5A)
Centralia(4A/5A)
Mt. Vernon(5A)
Marion(5A)
Mascoutah(5A)
Triad(5A)
East St. Louis(6A)
Edwardsville(7A/8A)
Belleville East(8A)

Week 9 Games to Watch
-Collinsville(7-1) at Centralia(5-3)
-Mt. Vernon(4-4) at Mt. Carmel(8-0). The Rams don't need to win this one due to being conference champs and that may be a good thing. Hard to get a good read on teams so far away, but I sense a good game here.
-Waterloo(5-3) at Freeburg(3-5)
