Antioch grid is Big Ten starting QB

Athan Kaliakmanis is in his 3rd year at Minnesota and is the starting QB in tonite's season opener.
Played 1 season at Carmel and 3 years at Antioch High.
So far tonight, he has done next to nothing productive against Nebraska but game is not over.
With J.J. McCarthy under center at Michigan, Chicago area now has two starting QBs in the growing Big Ten.

What did we learn week 1!?!?!?

Greetings earthlings and welcome to another unrefined edition of what did we learn. Coming to you long distance……….

Here we go from Virginia and parts unknown

1 - That Leo, oh, oh, oh, oh……what a night for the Lions
2 - That there may be a new beast in the MSL West
3 - That week 1 was done right with amazing matchups. Need more of this in the future.
4 - That preseason rankings, well they, uh, never mind.
5 - That the once mighty warren defense may be in need of a tuneup.
6 - That LWE is still doing LWE things.
7 - That Grayslake Central will be better, but not at Bolingbrook’s level yet.
8 - That York is still really good.
9 - That something happened to SHG. Authorities are on the scene, film at 11.
10 - That Lena Winslow could win 1, 2 or possibly 3a.

That’s all.

618 Talk Week 2

Week 1 produced several interesting storylines in Southern Illinois to review and week 2 has several intriguing games to preview. As always, I appreciate input on teams as I'm not an expert on everyone and it's nice to hear what others think.

Southwestern Conference
East St. Louis: Their week 1 36-33 loss to Mt. Carmel has already(understandably) been discussed at length on here and I'm not sure what there is left that has been unsaid. Obviously, penalties and extra points cost the Flyers in this one, but they had plenty go right to stand toe-to-toe with a fellow heavyweight. Next up for the Flyers(0-1) is a home game against St. Frances(0-2) out of Baltimore, who bested East Side 20-13 when they met in Canton, OH week 1 last year. This year's matchup is probably about as good of a football game as you'll be able to see between two currently winless programs. I'd keep my eye on the matchup between St. Frances's offense(averaging just 7 PPG) and the Flyer defense(surrendered 36 points) as both units are still looking to prove themselves. My read is this should be a good one, but nothing would surprise me too much here. Whoever loses will be unfamiliar territory however as East St. Louis has not started 0-2 since 2014 and 2015 was the last season St. Frances lost more than two games, which predates their transparently recruiting players from throughout the nation and being forced out of Maryland's playoffs.
Edwardsville: Kelsey Pickering was one of several rookie head coaches in the area to pick up a win last week, snagging a 30-21 verdict over Jackson(MO). Their win in Edwardsville comes a year after handing the Indians their first home loss in year's at their notoriously challenging playing site. This year's meeting came down to the wire, with Jake Curry tossing a game-winning touchdown to Joey DeMare with just over 30 seconds left to break a 21-21 deadlock(Jackson gave up a safety on the ensuing drive). Curry finished this game with 4 touchdowns and apparently the Tigers did not have star Iose Epenesa for most of this one. The Tigers(1-0) should figure as big favorites next week as the face a solid, but much smaller Cahokia squad.
Belleville East: The Lancers had a wild week leading up to their bout with Collinsville as the heat wave caused them to move to Friday night to 10 am Saturday before lighting strikes moved this back to an afternoon start. Belleville East employed their homefield advantage to the tune of a 10-0 halftime lead, but the Kahoks led 21-10 headed to the fourth. Even after pulling within 21-17, things looked grim for the Lancers late game as the Kahoks had marched down to their 19 yard line with just two minutes remaining. East regained possession inside their own redzone, setting up quarterback a game-winning drive where Armon Vinson found Justin Spears at the goal line for the game-winner in the final minute. The Lancers(1-0) make the lengthy trip to Pekin(1-0) next week in a bid to knock off a Dragon squad that has bested them the last two falls.
Belleville West: The weight of an 18 game losing streak was lifted of the shoulders of the Maroons last week, taking down Mascoutah in a 33-28 tiff. This battle of St. Clair County also marked the debut of head coach Ken Turner with the Maroons after snagging multiple state championships in Missouri. Mascoutah's only lead of the game lasted for a few minutes in the second quarter after taking control 14-13, but this was still a close one throughout. Next week, the Maroons will cross the mighty Mississippi River to face Fort Zumwalt West. This would be another upset if West pulls it off, but a path to playoffs would become viable with it.
Other Scores: O'Fallon(1-0) 54-9 Granite City, Next at Buchanan(MO) | Alton(0-1) 12-22 Cahokia, Next vs Quincy.

I'll update later to include the South 7, Mississippi Valley and other schools

CPL Pick Em Week 2

After a glorious week 1, it is time for week 2. After a week of Gately dogs and limited bathroom availability at Lane, I'm ready to roll on!! My stomach is back to normal and ready for a weekend of CPL fun. Stocked up on the Tums and Pepto!!!

ASPIRA Business and Finance White Tigers vs. North Grand Eagle Owls, Thursday 4:00 at North Grand
There is nothing better than the Thursday 4:15 slot for CPL football...unless you say screw that, let's start at 4:00!! That is a risky play with the state of construction in Chicago, but yet a glorious one at the same time. Just about as glorious as an Eagle Owl? I have no idea what an Eagle Owl is or what it would look like, but it sounds like a badass bird! Give me the maroon, gold, and baby blue eagle owls of North Grand!

Richards Warriors vs. Dyett Eagles, Thursday 6:30 at Lane
Ok, I'm really confused what is going on here? What the hell is the Thursday 6:30 slot? Are the lights at Lane on a timer and set to go off at 10:00? Have the redcoats negotiated a different start time at Lane? This really screws up my ability to get from a 4:15 game somewhere else to this barnburner matchup. Can one of my colleagues take my place at this game? I'll Venmo you some money so you get some stale chips from the Lane concession stand. Hopefully the refs show up at the right time, hopefully the lights stay on, hopefully the goal posts are straight, and hopefully Dyett takes care of business!!!!

Sarah Goode Knights vs. CVS Cavaliers, Friday 4:15 at Eckersall
My first car was a silver Chevy Cavalier. So many good memories from that automobile. One actually involved a date with a girl named Sarah. Unfortunately, all I got that night was a Goode Knight kiss and I never heard from her again. Screw that night, it sucked, just like the Knights will in this game. Nothing stops the Chevy Cavaliers from speeding away with this win!

Harlan Falcons vs. Marshall Commandos, Thursday 4:15 at Eckersall
Another CPL classic. Harlan makes their regular season debut in week 2!!! Add that up with a Marshall squad that made their return to CPL football last week and you got a great opening slot at Eckersall. Don't know about you all, but I'll be heading to this one. Guarantee I'll be getting some good fried chicken before the game. I can tell you where I won't be going...KFC! No Harlan Sanders for me, give me the Commandos!!

Game of the Week: Noble DRW Trading Cheetahs vs. Farragut Admirals, Saturday 10:00 at Lane
The higher ups at CPL truly messed up with their scheduling this week. How is this matchup not a primetime matchup on Friday or Saturday? Neither program played football last year and neither team played last week! This is how the you treat teams that are just starting in CPL or are making their glorious return??? Just absolutely ridiculous and shameful. This game better be on WCIU or whatever channel CPL football is on these days! This is a true toss-up because who knows anything about either team? I'll take the Cheetahs as they try to execute trades during the game for the Farragut players that are giving them trouble. Still so upset though about the time and location.

JCA / Illini

Bielema announced yesterday both Malachi Hood & Jordan Anderson are both out for the season. Hood tore his achiiles and Anderson ACL.

I’m sad for them - especially as someone who’s had multiple achilles surgeries - as P.T., while necessary, isn’t any fun.

And I was really looking forward to seeing J.A. in the backfield finally carrying the ball.

Hope both heal quickly.

week 1 clown cup results

Wow, fellas, we don't know shit. Probably the lowest scores in Clown Cup history. The teams are just clowning us.
