JCA in playoffs?

Wondering where JCA goes from here after last nights game. 3-2 now with Marist coming up. Easily can be 3-3 this time next week. How is it possible to give up so many 3rd and 4th and long first downs last night. It can’t all be the kids not being in position. Gotta be some scheme issues as well.

The offense went into hibernation beginning with the last drive of the first half. Why??

Final record predictions? 5-4??

5-0 Teams: Who can stay undefeated?

Just a quick look at several of the 5-0 teams entering into Week 6 action and trying to determine which ones have a shot at staying undefeated through thew regular season

Normal Community 5-0- Have I made it clear enough that I really, really liked what I saw from the Ironmen in walloping Peoria a few weeks ago? Danville in Danville is never easy but win that and I can see 9-0 here.

Mount Carmel 5-0 Week 9 hosting Loyola Academy will be the biggest test for both the Caravan and the Ramblers. Win that game and then go 14-0? It's very possible.

Loyola Academy 5-0- See above. Loyola will take on MC in Week 9 then will battle all comers in Class 8A.

IC Catholic Prep 5-0- One of the more amazing stories this season is the the Knights are beating larger enrollment schools now on a weekly basis. The remaining schedule is daunting including Loyola awaiting in Week 7. I'm really intersted to see if ICCP will begin to wear down a bit in the post-season, but how less of a challenge will the post-season be for the Knights after the regular season gauntlet?

Montini Catholic 5-0- The Broncos arw also a good story so far in 2023 after a handful of just really down seasons. Brother Rice in Week 8 will provide a big challenge for Montini here.

Rochester 5-0- The Blowout Club will continue to meet each Friday night for at least two more weeks before (hopefully) a challenge or two ends the regular season. I would not be shocked to see the Rockets go 9-0 then 5-0 after that in 2023.

Maine West 5-0- The Warriors are also a good story and while it looks like Niles West (4-1) awaits them in a few weeks....I can see the Warriors wind upo as a 9-0 high seed in 7A.

Seneca 5-0- The Irish have been impressive the last two seasons and it's signature win so far was Wilmington in Week 1. After this week the schedule wraps up much tougher headlined by Ottawa Marquette.

Geneva 5-0- Batavia awaits on Friday night....win that and the Vikes still have the North's (Wheaton and ST Charles) left to deal with this regular season.

Prairie Ridge 5-0- The Wolves get past CG and look strong but the two Central's (Birlington and Crystal Lake) look like potential trap games to me.

Richmond Burton 5-0_ Morris is up this week in Morris and Week 9 against the Hubs is always two semi tractors going straight at each other.

Morris 5-0 Richmond Burton is this week then Week 9 it's Sycamore.

Sycamore 5-0 Morris awaits in Week 9 while Kaneland and LP provides a good test as well.

Morton 5-0 The Potters face Dumnlap and Washington in Weeks 8 and 9....and that's one heck od a way to end a regular season.

Dunlap 5-0 The Eagles also finish strong with Morton. Washington and Metamora.

Hersey 5-0- Prospect is this week but win that and 9-0 finish looks doable.

Barrington 5-0- Hoffman Estates and Palatine will be nice end of the season tests.

Boylan 5-0- This week its Hononegah .Outside of that...not a lot else.

Hononegah 5-0 See above.

Antioch 5-0 The Och squares off against Wauconda this week and Grant could also make it interesting in Week 7.

TF North 5-0- Bremen awaits this week and then Hillcrest in Week 8. Then Lemont visits North in Week 9.

Kankakee 5-0 Week 9 against Crete Monee will determine a ton here and I would never count Crete out of anything.

West Aurora 5-0- Nate Eimer has the Blackhawks playing really strong football so far. I have a feeling the next four weeks will not be as kind to West Aurora as the first 5 weeks.

Edwardsville 5-0- Belleville East awaits and East St Louis will be yet another epic showdown....and could DeSmet in Week 9 be a spoiler?

Glenbard South 5-0- South has yet to beat South Elgin since joining the Upstate 8 who they play this week and also Glenbard East will not be easy in Week 8.

South Elgin 5-0- Glenbard South no question gets the Storm fired up and if SE wins this week they will be a 9-0 high seed again in 8A.

York 5-0- DGN this week GBW the week after and then Lyons in Week 8 will all be big tests....but I can see the Dukes getting to 9-0 with a win this week.

Downers Grove North 5-0- York this week then Lyons followed by the Hinsdale's. Not easy yet this team is capable.

Lincoln Way East 5-0 Nothing too easy here but also nothing too overwhelming either. It will be interesting when the SWSB adds the DVC teams....wait...that hasn't been announced yet? Never mind.

Quincy 5-0 I had a strong feeling in the winter that Quincy would be a load and a very tough team and so far so good. Sterling in Week 7 then Geneseo awaits in Week 8

Geneseo 5-0 Easily one of the best success stories so far in 2023 in the Maple Leafs. Week 8 in Quincy will be epic...and I just get a feeling Sterling will be a handful this week for the Leafs.

CS8 Predictions-Week 5

Six Friday night games, with one CS8 vs Big 12 contest in Jacksonville vs Peoria Notre Dame. This game will break the current 3-3 tie between the conferences.

Lincoln (3-1) at Southeast (0-4)
The Railers have easily beaten three 1-8 teams from last year so far, Lanphier, Eisenhower, and Peoria Manual. This is their final game against a 1-8 team. The Spartans are probably slightly better than the other three, but I'm not expecting an upset here or even a very close result. Lincoln will run the ball almost exclusively with the Carson twins to the victory. Lincoln 34 Southeast 8

U High (3-1) at Lanphier (0-4)
Lanphier did score 24 points in their loss to Eisenhower last week, but they've given up at least 41 points in each game this season. Eisenhower scored 46 against them after having only 12 points through three weeks. U High got an impressive 28-14 win over Decatur MacArthur last week. The Pioneers are the most improved team in the conference. They have developed a balanced offense along with a defense capable of forcing turnovers. After finishing 3-6 last year, U High has a good chance at getting 6 wins with 7 a possibility. U High 54 Lanphier 6

Eisenhower (1-3) at Rochester (4-0)
Derek's homecoming wish is for a quick running clock and plenty of playing time for the reserves by halftime. After some sloppy moments in Week 3 against MacArthur, the Rocket offense produced one big play after another last week against Jacksonville and led 42-0 at half. Eisenhower got their first win of the season over Lanphier 46-24 last week. Last year, they lost to Lanphier and got their only win against Southeast. The Panthers are apparently playing a lot of underclassmen. They had low program numbers last year. A positive sign for Eisenhower would be increased participation. Rochester 51 Eisenhower 6

Springfield (1-3) at SHG (3-1)
Springfield had some success moving the ball against Chatham last week, but turnovers derailed several drives and the Senators lost 33-0. Turnovers have hurt the Senators all season, particularly interceptions. For them to have any chance to stay close, they will need to sustain long drives and hold on to the ball. SHG's defense got their first shutout of the season against Southeast and have given up fewer points each week. The Cyclones have developed a featured RB who has scored 7 or 8 TD's just in the last two games. SHG should go to 4-1, forcing the Senators to have to win out to get 5 wins. SHG 43 Springfield 12

Chatham (4-0) at MacArthur (1-3)
Prior to last week's games, I thought this could be a potential trap game for the Titans. Perhaps they could be looking ahead to SHG in Week 6 and vulnerable to Mac on the road. Week 4 changed my mind significantly. Chatham defeated Springfield 33-0, with their third straight shutout. The Titans have used an effective run-first approach, throwing just enough to keep defenses honest. Mac went on the road to U High as the favorite and then fell behind 28-0 before getting 2 late TD's to make the final 28-14. Mac has had some good moments in all three of their losses. However, their defense has struggled to hold down better teams. The offense has big play capability. To have any chance, the Generals need a fast start and big plays from RB Johnson-Cook. Chatham 34 MacArthur 14

Peoria Notre Dame (3-1) at Jacksonville (2-2)
The CS8 vs Big 12 game of the week and probably the most interesting contest of Week 5. Jacksonville has been running clocked two weeks in a row, losing 51-10 to SHG and 56-0 to Rochester. They have struggled mightily since losing their QB early in the SHG game to injury. He did not play against Rochester. The Crimsons were very run focused against Rochester, and the Rockets crowded the line of scrimmage consistently. Their defense gave up one big play after another with Rochester scoring in short 1-3 play drives. Jacksonville still has a path to 5 wins if they lose, but they at a minimum need to play much better than the last two weeks. Peoria Notre Dame has won big over three pretty weak teams and lost a close game to 3-1 Bloomington 34-26 in Week 3. The Irish are favored. Peoria Notre Dame 35 Jacksonville 23

So which 1-4 teams still have a chance?

Just a quick look at several of the 1-4 teams entering into Week 6 action and trying to determine which ones have a shot at getting to 5 wins.

Marist- The remainder of the regular season schedule for the Redhawks is still strong including this week hosting JCA, then remaining games against NND ST Pats and DeLaSalle. This week hosting JCA is in my mind a critical but if Marist can get a win here...they have a decent shot at 5-4.

Nazareth Academy- Another CCL team with some quality teams still ahead of them.....but has anyone been as tested and has just come up short than the Road Runners this season? Next up is Fenwick followed by Rice, Marian Catholic and St. Francis with zero easy games remaining. I can see Naz getting it done and I can just as easily see them get knocked out here as well. If any at large teams at 4-5 can get into the playoff field, Naz has to be one of those teams I would guess.

New Trier- The Trevians played a very strong non conference and crossover schedule and with it's remaining schedule in Evanston. Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South and Deerfield remaining...I would not count out the Trevians just yet.

Glenbrook South_ See above...except that the Titans still has to play power Maine South and things get a bit murkier.

Rolling Meadows- With Hersey and BG still remaining....it doesn't look great for Rolling Meadows Grandma's team.

Fremd- I also don't feel great about the Vikes chances with Palatine and HE remaining

Lakes- Wauconda is still remaining....and it's just weird seeing Lakes in this position.

Grayslake North- See above...and the Knights still have Wauconda to play as well.

TF South- Both Tinley Park and Hillcrest remain....yet something tells me TFS isn't quite done just yet.

Shepard- If the Astros offense can get on track.....maybe.

Plainfield East- Joliet West remains the biggest test for the Bengals on the schedule.....beat the Tigers and I can see East having a chance at 5-4.

OPRF- The remaining schedule includes zero easy games

Hinsdale Central- GBW and DGN await the young Red Devils.

Two referee questions from plays from games this weekend

I have two questions for how this was handled by referees this weekend. The first is a coach calling a timeout with no timeouts left. The referee blew the whistle before realizing they had zero left. It interrupted a 2 point conversion play. The referee said it was an inadvertent whistle and there was no penalty. I figured calling a timeout you don't have would be a penalty like a technical in basketball.

Second, there was a first down conversion late in a game on 4th down. It was close, so there was a measurement. The offense celebrated excessively and was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. The stands were arguing that it should be 1st and 25 since it is a deadball penalty, the play results in a first down and then is penalized 15 yards from that spot for 1st and 25. The referees gave the first down, back them up 15 yards and reset the chains. So it was 1st and ten further back then the original chains.

I'm not an official, but both of these seemed strange to me. Does anyone know the rules?

What did we learn week 5!?!?!

More than half way through the regular season and this week was an educational one on many fronts.

1 - That despite the loss, Carmel Catholic is back and will be a major issue in 5A
2 - That the NSC title looks to be returning to Gurnee.
3 - That the streak is over, Rock Falls got the W.
4 - That Maine South will never lose a CSL game.
5 - That LW West may never take off those orange jerseys.
6 - That when Palatine and Barrington play, take the over.
7 - That this years York may be better than last years York.
8 - That OFallon was leading ESL, then they weren’t.
9 - That another typical finish for CG/PR. Hope they both end up in 5A north - what a bracket that would be.
10 - That Dwight and Momence are too great small school stories so far - combined 9-1.

That be it - was gonna do 11 this week but saw how 10 worked for Notre Dame so…….

WSC Wk 5 Pick'em

Here we are - Week 5. The official half-way point of the regular season. If Hinsdale South can get a win over Willowbrook, they have a real shot at getting to 5 wins, even if they fall next week to DGS. Willowbrook coming of a loss to DGS is sure to be fired up, and not let the conference championship slip away.

On the Silver side, the only game with a question is York at HC. I recognize this is a homer statement, and most everyone will likely pick chalk for the entire Silver side. The Red Devils have backed themselves into a corner, but the only game they weren't competitive in late was against LT. The offense has put up points when they've had time to get going, so the onus is on the defense to get York's offense off the field. It is HC's homecoming, so perhaps there will be a little more fire.

Glenbard West goes to Leyden on Thursday, so all picks for that game will need to be in prior to kickoff. Otherwise, all other games are on Friday Night.

Proviso East (1-3) @ Addison Trail (2-2)
Downers Grove South (1-3) @ Morton (1-3)
Hinsdale South (2-2) @ Willowbrook (2-2)
Glenbard West (2-2) @ Leyden (1-3) THURSDAY 21st
Downers Grove North (4-0) @ Oak Park-River Forest (1-3)
York (4-0) @ Hinsdale Central (1-3)
Lyons Township (2-2) @ Proviso West (0-4)
