Districts and Privates v Publics

Question: If Districts pass and Privates stay a part of the IHSA will this negatively or positively effect enrollment at Private schools?

We all know everyone attends a private school because of the religious education, higher level of education and amazing facilities.

But will areas where the public schools offer a better education and facilities start to draw some students back? If there is no more CCL football will it matter to some?

IHSA District Project

As I have stated in other threads I am not a fan of the 8 Classes with 16 Districts per class. Because of geography and amount of teams playing football in Illinois I do not feel it is sustainable over the long haul for IHSA football.

My proposal still has 8 title games and classes come playoff time but they are broken down Class 1A-4A, Division 1 & Division 2 in each class (like Texas does it).

During the regular season teams will play in a District in Classes 1A, 2A, 3A & 4A.

Districts can have 6, 7, or 8 teams in them based on geography.

In my example below I have 17 Districts in Class 4A. If you are in an 8 team District you will have 4 playoff qualifiers, 7 team District will have 4 playoff qualifiers and 6 team Districts will have 3 playoff qualifiers. (Note only your District record counts to playoff qualification).

In my proposal CPS will always only be in a District with other CPS teams.

Based on the above 64 qualifiers Private schools and the next largest schools to fill the first 32 teams will be 4A Division 1 and the following 32 schools will be 4A Division 2.

These are the largest 125 schools based on the 500 schools that played IHSA 11 man football in 2023. This does not include CPS schools from the Blue Divisions that were not eligible for the IHSA playoffs.

The best IHSA Football playoff formula

This should be the new playoff formula for IHSA football. This formula will create better pairings. This factors in record, strength of schedule, and tie breakers.

Formula
1. Regular season record. Take wins then subtract losses 8-1 record = 7 points... you get the idea.
2. Add Playoff Points, just like the IHSA uses now.
3. Add Defeated opponent wins.
4. If any teams are tied for playoff points from above, then the team with more wins gets the higher seed.
5. If there is still a tie, then the team with the fewest regular season points allowed gets the higher seed.

Here are the pairings for 8a using this formula. The formula gives us the top 32 teams.

1. LA (107 points)
32. Niles West (46 points)

16. Bellville East (68 )
17. Glenbard West (67)

8. York ((76)
25. St. Ignatius (62)

9. South Elgin (73)
24. Oswego (62)

4. Edwardsville (84)
29. Aurora East (57)

13. HF (71)
20. Taft (66)

5. Warren (84)
28. Algonquin Jacobs (57)

12. Palatine (72)
21. Joliet West (64)

2. LWE (105)
31. Chicago Lane (48)

15. Stevenson (68)
18. Sandburg (67)

7. Maine South (76)
26. Minooka (61)

10. Lockport (73)
23. Naperville North (63)

3. Barrington (91)
30. West Aurora (53)

14. Naperville Central (68)
19. Downers South (66)

6. Neuqua Valley (79)
27. LaGrange Lyons (59)

11. Huntley (72)
22. Plainfield North (64)

With the formula from above there will be some ties with points. For example, Naperville C, Stevenson, and Belleville East all had 68 points. With a tie like this, the fewest regular season points allowed gives you the better seed. in this case Naperville C allowed 112 points giving them the higher seed.

My IHSA District Project (5 Classes) - Work in Progress

Here are my enrollment breakdowns for the hypothetical 5 class district proposal.

I had 459 schools in the district proposal, so the classes will be 92 in 5A, 92 in 4A, 92 in 3A, 92 in 2A, and 91 in 1A

Tossing around the idea of each class having 16 districts (number of teams per district will vary due to geography and other factors) and the top two teams in each district will advance to the playoffs. Only your district standings will count toward you making the playoffs.

In this hypothetical arrangement CPS has decided only to enter its Red Division teams into the district classifications. Every two years the four CPS schools with the worst overall record will drop down to the White divisions and be replaced by the best four White teams over the previous two years.

In this hypothetical scenario teams will be given the option to play in a higher classification, so example Mt. Carmel and ESL could opt into 5A.

I am working “opt up” teams now, which will change the classifications, but this is the preliminary idea.

Stay tuned to this thread for the opt ups later this week….

Alcoa Tennessee High Football 9 Title in a row

Alcoa High School in East Tennessee is Driscoll like & has won their 9th State Title in a row. There are 6 classes & Alcoa is 2A but plays up in 3A. They often have a difficult time filling their schedule. They play schools twice their size if not 3 times. They destroyed the 5A State Champs Knoxville West this year. Their only loss was to arch rival 6A Maryville by 3. They had to play a team from Staten Island this year. Have been talking for years & would love to see them play East St. Louis or one of the other top teams from Illinois. Alcoa is right down the street from the Airport TYS here. In a Midwest tie in also they purchased the old football scoreboard from Purdue.

Sandburg IHSA investigation - asst coach whistleblower on recruiting

Pardon me if I missed this on the board already but just saw this. Wild story...asst coach doesn't like what McCallister is doing. Unethical behavior. Recruiting violations. D230 and IHSA says everything is fine....

IHSA Alums - College and Pro

AJ Epenesa - now a regular for the Bills' D line. Nice career.

Sam LaPorta - a great rookie campaign and could become an all-timer.

Antonio Johnson - rookie coming back from injury. Lots of Special Teams, mixed in at Safety. He an INT a few weeks ago.

Justin Tucker - missed one last weekend, but still a top kicker in the NFL.

Riley Patterson - another SWC kicker doing just fine.

Craig James - has played in two games for the Jets at CB.

C.J. Coldon Jr. - CB released from the Vikings' practice squad.

Miles McVay - got a few snaps in a couple of games. COMPLETELY transformed his body - this will be a redshirt season, I am sure. His Twitter indicates he is happy to keep grinding for Saban.

Paris Patterson - same as MM. Both playing interior OL in the SEC, so it is expected they will not come in and play right away.

Toriano Pride - seemed to have taken the CB spot after someone was injured, and started two games. Then missed a wide-open tackle that went 77 more yards. A frosh and little bro of an alum Clemson CB now in the NFL seems to have leapfrogged him in the depth chart.

Tyler Macon - backup QB for an HBC.

Jordan Slaughter - Illinois’ “sixth man” on the offensive line: played a season-most 24 snaps vs. #7 Penn State

Keith Randolf - Nice college career. Might end up as a non-drafted roster addition.

JoJo Hayden and Brandon Henderson - both Frost for U of I and likely redshirts.

I know I am missing some others from the 618.

If the EXPANDED PLAYOFFS started today...

In conjunction with Edgy's Q of the week, here is what it might actually look like if the playoffs included every team. The Outlook currently lists exactly 500 schools eligible for an 11-man football playoff. I decided 8A thru 2A would have a balanced 64-team field, while 1A would bracket up the remaining 52 teams. I don't see much upset potential in round one of 8A. But I also don't see a lot of matchups that might be 77-0. Brother Rice has a cozy little quad as the 39-seed in 7A. I split 6A north/south. When I got to 5A, I lost interest. Enjoy!

The World Famous CCL-ESCC Predictions 2023 Week 14

We made it! All the way to Week 14 - and no one strangled one another. Yet. A reminder not to bring up unsettling topics at the Thanksgiving dinner such as zip codes, transfers, multipliers, etc. Best to just stick to easier topics like Hamas, Gaza, refugees and the like. A special thanks to the Mustangs, Vikes, 'Runners, 'Toppers, Caravan and Ramblers for perfectly spacing out these games this weekend. Protip: completely abrogate control of the remote on Thanksgiving. If you have any Lions, Cowboy or Egg Bowl fans around, let them flap their wings. Once Friday comes, it's all yours.

Q of the Week: So how did Illinois State fare this weekend?

Since I was in a TV studio in Chicago all day Friday and Saturday I'm looking for thoughts and comments from fans who actually attended in person either Friday and/or Saturday at ISU....how was the overall feel vibre at Illinois State? How was parking, concessions, seating area and such. Bring the good, the not so good and if needed the ugly.
