New: The Week 7 Underclassmen Report

Each week I will prepare the Underclassmen Report which is a look at which underclassmen names I saw in person and made a positive impression at each game I cover live in person this season. This week I take a deeper look into some of the better underclassmen names for DePaul Prep/Carmel/Glenbard West revisit and York.

The Week 1 Underclassmen Report

DePaul Prep Rams

2026 WR Matthew Osterman (6-foot-0, 170 pounds)- Impressive receiver who showed to have very good hands, runs good, disciplined routes and just made tough catches look easy in this win. Colleges will want to see more from Matthew including seeing how well he runs on the stop watch but his in game play was very strong here. Also looks to have the frame to add much more good weight and strength over the next year plus.

2027 OL Carlos Rios (6-foot-5, 290 pounds)- Great sized kid here who already looks to have a college ready frame. Moves pretty well here for a 300 pounder and Rios is a fluid athlete who will get better and better over the next few years. Easily passes the all important eyeball test. Needs to work more on bend/flexibility along with getting a bit quicker feet/hands along with using his hands more consistently. Has the overall physical tools and upside to develop into a potential higher D1 level name in the 2027 class who still has a lot of wok to do.

2026 DL Carter Jurecko (6-foot-3, 250 pounds)- Interesting looking kid on the hoof who I will need to watch more video of this off season. Went up against some big Carmel OL and more than held his own along with winning his share of one on ones in this win.

2026 DB Luke Flom (5-foot-10, 190 pounds)- Nice overall player here for the Rams. Agsain this is another name who I will go back and watch closer this winter on video.

Carmel Corsairs (note: I was not able to locate a Carmel varsity roster...once I do I will add more names to this report)

2027 QB Trae Taylor 6-foot-2, 170 pounds)- One of the big reasons why I wanted to see this game was to get my first in person live game evaluation of Taylor. Taylor has added early Power 4 offers from a ton of schools and is he truly as good as advertised? One thing I talk about a lot is I make sure to see top tier kids in person and sometimes I agree with the pack and sometimes I don't....and either way you'll get my honest opinion.

So...Trae Taylor? No question Trae Taylor has a ton of upside and it's pretty easy to see why he's landed so many early Power 4 offers. Taylor has gotten bigger, taller and stronger since I saw him last. I can see him getting to say 6-foot-3 plus and easily get to say 190 plus pounds. Taylor throws an impressive ball with very good arm strength and his pocket patience along with his ability to make reads and multiple check offs is already at a high level. Taylor also just handles himself with poise and a maturity seldom seen in a sophomore in high school. He's a personable kid on and off the field and a likable personality. Taylor still has work to do including becoming a more accurate passer along with the expected additional fundamental work and physical workouts etc. The biggest upside for Taylor in my mind is thast he's already an elite level kid who still has a ton of growth and developing ahead of him. Taylor will become a much different player over the next few years and he has a real chance to become one of the top signal callers in this state of not the nation in the Class of 2027.

Revisit Glenbard West Hilltoppers

2027 QB Omar Valdez (6-foot-2, 170 pounds)- Still has a ton of work to do but Omar Valdez also has the look and physical tools to continue to grow and improve. I'm planning to look at Valdez remaining video thru this season and also in winter workouts.

2026 RB JaMarcus Kelly (5-foot-11, 184 pounds) Nice running back here who I was not really aware of until this game. Kelly has good size and strength, runs hard and also showed some burst and wiggle.I still need to see more here via video the remainder of the season and I'm excited to see Kelly's development this off season.

2027 TE Brady Johnson (6-foot-3, 212 pounds) Another eyeball passing name to watch here. Didn't get much of a chance to show his pass catching ability in this loss but has the look and feel of an athlete who could play a few different positions in my opinion.

2026 LB Maximus Hetlet (5-foot-11, 200 pounds) Maximus Hetlet has maybe a Top 5 coolest name in IHSA football, and Hetlet is a name to watch. Hetlet plays the linebacker position at a high level, is a coaches son who plays like a coaches son and has a high football IQ. Hetlet is a bit undersized right now for the higher D1 schools but has a chance to play at the next level in my opinion. Has a great motor and is a great tackler and finisher.

2026 LB Jack Davis (6-foot-1, 175 pounds) Part of a pretty strong linebacker group for the Hilltoppers this season. Davis is a name to watch this winter has the frame and build to allow him to add much more good weight and power.

2026 DL Jonah Singh (6-foot-1, 208 pounds) Another name that caught my attentiuon on Saturday and a name to watch this off season and I get the feeling he will be a much bigger and stronger kid a year from now.

York Dukes

2026 RB Henry Duda (6-foot-1, 200 pounds)
- Nice overall player here. Has a nice combination of speed and burst wjhile also running with a good amount of power. Seems to me like Duda is also capable of playing more than one position at the college level.

2026 WR Simon Kodosky (6-foot-2, 175 pounds) Another very solid high school player and receiver here. I'll definitely dig deeper this off season into his video from the 2024 season.

2026 TE/DE Hunter Stepanich (6-foot-7, 220 pounds).- Big, tall and athletic kids here who has some real high ceiling upside in my opinion. Played both tight end and defensive end for the Dukes and I see his next level skills and tools leaning more towards tight end. Stepanich has good speed and also showes ton have good strength as well. He has a frame that will allow him to pretty easily add much more good weight and strength. Also has great body cointrol, knows how to use his length and reach to his advantage in one on ones and again just has a ton of growth and development ahead of him...and that's a very good thing.

2026 WR Simon Kodosky (6-foot-2, 175 pounds)- Another very solid athlete and player for the Dukes here. Has good hands, runs good routes and is anoither name who will get bigger and stronger over the next year plus.

2026 OL Camden Sivewright (6-foot-6, 260 pounds)- Another really intriguing name here who looks to have great size and physical tools. I wasn't able to really get a strong fel for Camden live so I'll go back a look harder at his video from this season. York just seems to have these big strong kids on the roister year in and year out and add Camden to that growing list.

2026 OL Costa Kampas (6-foot-5, 275 pounds)- See above. Again the line play was a big plus for the Dukes in this win over Glenbard west and I will also go look at Costa's video ASAP. Costa showed to have really good feet and balance, is a mobile bigger kid and again I'm excited to get a better look and feel off his tape.

2026 DB Riggins Kohl (5-foot-11, 165 pounds) A name I wrote in my games notes as a name to watch.....

2026 DB Eddy Sica (5-foot-11, 165 pounds). A name I wrote in my games notes as a name to watch.....

2024 Carmel Catholic team breakdown?

Sadly I have not yet been able to find a Carmel varsity roster. I did not find any on Friday night at DePaul prep and I have yet to find one online. I also emailed both the Carmel AD and Jason McKie the HC on Monday and so far no response back. I'll email them again today but unless I can get an accurate and a current roster I will not be able to produce a report.

This has been easily the worst year for trying to get accurate roster state wide for whatever reasons.

Congrats to all especially to my podcasting partner Mike Clark along with Taylor Bell. Talk about a powerhouse class.

How to make the Southwest Valley Conference even better long term

Next year the Southwest Valley will split into 2 divisions down from the current 3 this year. Those divisions will finally allow for some of the ridiculous Blue versus Red crossover games that we have seen in the previous years to disappear and should result in more competitive balance.

The SWVC Blue will be Lincoln-Way East, Sandburg, H-F, Lockport, Naperville Central, Naperville North, Neuqua Valley, and Metea Valley.

The SWVC Red will be Lincoln-Way West, Lincoln-Way Central, Bradley, Andrew, DeKalb, Waubonsie Valley, and Stagg. The 7 team Red Division will need to find Weeks 3-9 non-conference games the next two years.

But what if we could improve the Southwest Valley Conference even more? Already this year the combining of the old DVC and SWSC for football has led to some more competitive matchups and reduced the need for those old Blue versus Red crossovers in the SWSC that resulted in a 95% win percentage for the Blue. Arguably the Southwest Valley is already the top public school conference in the state in my opinion, though several other conferences can make a solid argument. So why not improve it?

So here is an idea free of charge for the 22 ADs and multiple adminstrators of these south suburban schools to take a look at when scheduling your football teams out in the future. It guarantees competitive matchups for years and saves you the work of needing to fill a random Week 7 game for example if you're in the current Southland Conference or Southwest Valley Red.

Take a lesson from the CCL/ESCC that has managed to create perhaps the most exciting competitive atmosphere in high school football in Illinois by virtually ensuring that 80-90% of their teams will have 4 wins heading into Week 9 of the season because of how masterfully they have balanced the divisions in their conferences. Don't want to lose kids to private schools? Let them be on a team that is in the playoff hunt all year instead of getting drilled by a team they shouldn't be playing in a non-competitive crossover because the AD and school/district adminstrators were too lazy to competively balance the football team's schedule like the CCL/ESCC schools do a masterful job at.

In this scenario, I'm combining the Southland Conference into the SWVC, but doing it in a way that will allow a bit more competition for Kankakee and Crete-Monee, but still allowing for any of those schools from the Southland Conference to get a clear path to 5 victories for the playoffs and reduce their need for finding a random Weeks 3-9 game. Here is my plan to improve the south suburban high school football landscape and also kind of recreate the old SICA which was the best setup ever. :)

Let me know what you think.

I present to you the Southwestland Valley Football Conference...

Daily Herald?

I noticed a couple weeks ago that their score postings seemed to be off...
Have I lost my mind? Isn't it usually the team we are viewing/reading about with the score on the left, other team on the right, so you can easily tell a win from a loss? This year they seem to flip back and forth. I thought they might be doing it based on home/away but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Also - it's 10/7 (almost 10/8), and their scoreboard is missing scores from 10/4 and 10/5.
I know I'm approaching dinosaur age, but is HS football on its way out, or just at DH?

Mt. Carmel fb future

I am old enough to remember when St. Laurence was the undisputed powerhouse in the Chicago Catholic League in an era when there were no IHSA playoffs.
I guess you could say what goes around, comes around (Ha!).
Anyway, because of youtube game coverage, I have become a bit familiar in recent years with Mt. Carmel football, and this is what I am wondering about....
When the Caravan won state in 2022, they had a great high school-level QB in Blainey Dowling.
When they repeated as state champs in 2023, they had a D-1 calibre running back in Dupree and an emerging high-quality high-school level QB in Jack Elliot and an O-line that protected him and made all types of pass plays doable.
This year, the team certainly could "3-peat" and if it does, it will likely be carried to the title by Elliott who seems to be counted on pretty much to do it all as the top rusher and effective passer.
What I wonder about is the 2025 season. For the current Mt. Carmel team, Elliot is pretty much a do-it-all offensive weapon. But what I don't see is any emerging underclass offensive weapons which the program will need to stay at the top of its game. ... especially true if it winds up playing 8A ball next November.
Other than the "they'll hit the transfer portal hard" response which I am not interested in hearing about, are there current Mt. Carmel players that are "hiding" so to speak ... being well hidden because of the enormous shadow that Elliot casts as the team's QB?
I have seen this year's backup QB play some fourth-quarter snaps but, of course, plays at that point in a game that's been decided don't tell me anything, and I have simply not seen anybody so far this fall at the offensive skill positions that gets me to say, "This kid is going to be the focal point of a high-scoring offense next fall."

ICE Week 7

Manteno went out and got it last week like I predicted. Pretty ho-hum for the rest of the games last week.

This week only has one game of note per usual. Same old story here in the ICE.

Manteno (6-0) @ Reed-Custer (0-6) - Easy enough to pick. RC gonna continue to be bad and the 'Teno is hot right now. Manteno with a lot and RC with nothing or close to it. Manteno 45 RC 7

Lisle (0-6) @ Herscher (3-3) - Years ago this would have been a decent ICE mid-tier matchup. Not so much anymore. Lisle stays winless. Herscher 28 Lisle 7

Streator (2-4) @ Peotone (3-3) - Ya, Streator has a few wins. However the teams they have beaten have a combined 0 wins. Peotone has to be beat up after their last 3 weeks, but they rebound here and finish the last triple of the year with 3 wins to hope to gain momentum into the playoffs. Tone 35 Streator 14

Coal City (5-1) @ Wilmington (6-0) - GOTW! Round 1 of the conference championship weeks. CC has been hot, but their competition has not been the most stout (not saying that Wilmington's has been either). The Cats should be primed up and grinding out the run game. I like WIlmington in a controlling win. Fire up the Harleys boys. Wilmo 35 CC 19

SR/MC Possible Scenario

I believe the Mustangs are visiting the Caravan Week 2 of the '25 season which is considered a "non-conference" game. Is there a possibility that these teams could play each other again in the '25 regular season if both teams earn 2nd place in their respective CCL conferences from the '24 season?

I don't know much about how these inter/intra conference games are scheduled, but I was under the impression that the 1st place Blue team faces the 1st place Green team, 2nd place Blue plays 2nd place Green, and so on. Now, that'd be something. Anyone in the know?

WB6 super quick recap

Super busy weekend. Next two weeks are going to interesting as there are several teams still looking to punch a ticket to the post season.

Sterling 6 @ Quincy 63: Quincy is out to prove they are a legit threat in the playoffs this season. Sterling’s young team was totally out matched and now must rally to find that 5th win.

United Township 14 @ Moline 28: Moline rumbled out to 21-0 halftime lead before UT made it interesting in the second half. Moline finished with almost 300 yards on the ground.

Thornridge 7 @ Geneseo 55: Not much to say here. Geneseo’s run game was in full effect here as they got the running clock by halftime. Thornridge’s only score came off of a 1st half kick return for a touchdown.

Galesburg 6 @ Rock Island 13: I can’t figure either of these teams out. Galesburg lays a dud has Rock Island gets its first win of the season in a offense optional football game.
