2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

West Aurora 7 on 7 and battle of the big butts
Kaneland 7 on 7
Batavia 7 on 7 and Lineman Challenge

Impact Player for Geneva:

Geneva junior four star ranked WR Talymn Taylor (6-foot-1, 175 pounds) is already one of the most sought after names in the Class of 2025 nationally. Taylor, who is already holding multiple Power 5 offers this summer is a true game breaking type of talent who will draw double and triple teams from the opening whistle in 2023. Taylor is more than capable of playing multiple positions for the Vikings and I would not be surprised to see the Vikings utilize Taylor in multiple different ways in 2023.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Geneva Vikings:

Geneva and head coach Boone Thorgesen has gotten the Vikings program headed in the right direction and into the IHSA state playoff field in his first two seasons leading the Vikings program. The 2022 Geneva Vikings posted a 6-3 regular season record, made the Class 7A state playoff field and lost to St. Rita in opening round action.

The biggest question facing Geneva in 2023? Can the Vikings beat one if not all three of the Dukane's Big 3 football programs in 2023 in hated long time rival Batavia, St Charles North and Wheaton North? Geneva last beat Batavia in 2010 and the Bulldogs have seen it's program rise to a state power level under former head coach Mike Gaspari and now Dennis Piron. Looking for a way to announce that the Vikings football program is truly back to it's historical winning ways? Beating Batavia is one hell of a way to announce your arrival as a challenger in the Dukane conference and in Class 7A.

Impact Player for Marian Central Catholic:

Marian Central Catholic senior TE/DE Christian Betancour (6-foot-5, 235 pounds) is a four star ranked recruit who is already verbally committed to Clemson. Betancur, who was recruited by Clemson as a tight end has impressive size and physical tools and will be a nightmare matchup for all opponents in 2023. Look for Betancur to also develop more and look for much more improvement as a defensive end this coming fall.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Marian Central Catholic Hurricanes:

Marian Central Catholic and head coach Liam Kirwan posted a 3-6 record in his first season leading his alma matter in 2022. The Hurricanes, who played last fall as an Independent just struggled to slow down all opponents last fall. The Hurricanes also haven't been to the IHSA state playoff field since 2017 and will look to hopefully get back on track this coming fall.

The biggest question facing Marian Central Catholic in 2023? Can the Hurricanes reload and get back to it's former winning ways starting this fall. The Hurricanes will begin play in the new Chicagoland Christian Conference, which will be a much welcomed change from playing an always rough independent slate. Look for the Hurricanes offense to be a key led by QB Cale McKenna (Northern Iowa) and TE Christian Betancur and this unit can hopefully take the pressure off the Hurricanes defense especially early this season. I'm looking for more positive momentum this fall from MCC and I can see this team end up with a 4-5 record in 2023, and with a few key breaks here and there this team could challenge for a 5-4 season as well.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

Sterling HS July for 2 events
Joint practice with Sterling HS & Oswego East HS

Impact Player for Newman Central Catholic

Newman Central Catholic senior RB/DB Brady Grennan was a very solid two way performer in 2022 for the Comets in 2022 and will be asked to again provide both production and leadership on and off the field this fall. Grennan has good speed, plays with an impressive football IQ and is no question a key name this season.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Newman Central Catholic:

Newman Central Catholic and head coach Mike LeMay was able to get the Comets into the IHSA state playoff field in his first season leading this historical small school power program in the State of Illinois. The Comets finished the regular season 5-4 then lost in Class 2A opening round action to Rockridge.

The biggest question I have for Newman Central Catholic in 2023? Can the Comet reload at a few key positions (QB/DL) and still remain at the top of the Three Rivers conference and beyond? The graduation loss of QB JJ Castle and OL/DL Hayden Witt this spring is big for Newman Central Catholic, but this program always seems to find a way to reload.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

IWU Team Camp Retreat

Impact Player for Minooka:

Minooka has plenty of talent back for the 2023 season and that talent level includes some key names in the offensive skills. Yet if the Indians are able to break out and make a deep run in 2023 it all begins upfront on the offensive line and senior OT Brady Barrowman is a key this fall. Barrowman, who is holding multiple FCS level offers this summer is the lone returning full time starter upfront from a season ago. Barrowman will be asked to provide production along with leadership for an offensive line that has some talent with some size but lacks live varsity starting lineup reps.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Minooka Indians:

Minooka and head coach Matt Harding is entering his fourth season at Minooka and has led the Indians football program to the IHSA state playoff field in his two full seasons in charge. Minooka in 2022 finished the3 regular season with a 6-3 record and made the Class 8A state playoff field. Minooka then defeated Glenbard East then lost to Palatine in second round action to end the season with a 7-4 record.

The biggest question facing Minooka in 2023? Can the Indians reload at a handful of key positions (QB/OL/DL) and still remain a conference title contender and also make a deeper post-season run this fall? Minooka has a very good group of surrounding skill position players led by senior RB Joey Partridge, senior H Back Kam Chigi, senior WR Donovan Anderson and senior RE Carson Jacoby while incoming transfer Kameron Hopkins is another speedy name to watch. The defense also has some key names to watch led by senior DB Efreim Ramirez who's a talented two way player for Minooka. I'm looking for the Indians to end up with say a 7-2/6-3 regular season record (the first two non conference games are tough games) and to again get into the Class 8A playoff field this fall.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

Impact Player for Olympia:

Olympia senior WR/LB Chase Litwiller (6-foot-4, 195 pounds) is a good sized and physically impressive player who has been drawing lots of recruiting looks and attention this early summer. Litwiller will be asked to play in all three phases of the game in 2023 and his production and leadership on the defensive side of the football in particular will be a big key in 2023.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Olympia Spartans:

Olympia and head coach Eric Lyons had a strong 2022 season as the Spartans made the IHSA Class 3A state playoff field as an at large team. Olympia made the IHSA state football playoff field for just the second time since the 2002 season (2022/2014). Olympia made the Class 3A in 2022 and defeated Benton and St Joseph Ogden then lost to Williamsville in the Class 3A quarterfinals.

The biggest question I see for Olympia in 2023? Can the Spartans take a few more big steps including winning the Sangamo conference title this fall and make even more noise in the Class 3A playoff field this fall? Olympia welcomes back a ton of key starters back this season but the graduation loss of All State OL Blaine Halley will be felt this fall. I still see the Spartans getting to the 7-2 level and getting back into the Class 3A playoff field again in 2023.

Impact Player for Rolling Meadows:

Rolling Meadows senior WR/S Ben Peterman (6-foot-3, 195 pounds) is a high level athlete who has also been a key performer for Rolling Meadows over the past few seasons. Peterman, who has been drawing looks and recruiting attention from several FCS level schools this summer will no question have the ability to play at either eight end or wide receiver at the FCS/D2 level in my opinion.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Rolling Meadows Mustangs:

Rolling Meadows and head coach Sam Baker missed the 2022 IHSA state playoff field and posted a 4-5 record, including losing it's last four games of the regular season. Rolling Meadows has missed the IHSA state playoff field just twice since the 2002 season (2022/2010) so it's a very rare year when the Mustangs aren't a part of the post-season.

The biggest question I see for Rolling Meadows in 2023? Can the Mustangs find a few key answers this summer including finding some key kids to step up at a handful of key positions (QB/OL/DL) along with keeping good overall depth and numbers for the 2023 season. Last season was an "up" year I felt in the Mid Suburban East and while the conference looks strong at the top again, spots 3 thru 6 in the conference race looks more wide open to me this summer. I'm projecting Rolling Meadows to be improved and to be a 6-3 caliber team that makes it's way back into the IHSA state playoff field in 2023.

Impact Player for Morris

Morris senior WR/DB AJ Zweeres was an honorable mention All State player in 2022 for Morris and head coach Alan Thorson. Look for Zweers to again be asked to be an impact player and someone who will pretty much never leave the field for Morris in 2023.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Morris Football Team:

Morris and head coach Alan Thorson had a terrific run in 2022 as Morris finished the regular season with a 7-2 record and earned a spot in the 2022 IHSA Class 5A state playoff field. Morris in the post-season defeated LaSalle-Peru, Centralia, Mahomet Seymour then lost to Peoria in the 5A semifinals finishing the season with 10-3 record.

The biggest question I see for Morris in 2023? Can Morris reload in a handful of key spots (OL/DL/LB) and remain at the top of the Class 5A state playoff field again in 2023? Morris is always playoff ready and this program remains one of the top overall programs in the State of Illinois and has been for decades. I can see Morris posting a 8-1/7-2 regular season record and again challenging for the Kishwaukee-Interstate 8 conference title and also being another team to watch in the 5A state playoff bracket in 2023.

Impact Player for Rochester

Rochester senior TE/DE Lance Ingold (6-foot-5, 215 pounds) who is already verbally committed to NIU was a major impact player on both sides of the football, especially playing as a rush end for the Rockets in 2022. Ingold has added more good weight and strength this off season and looks primed for a big time breakout season this coming fall. In my opinion....NIU locked up a very good player in Lance Ingold who could very well see his recruiting process continue and for other schools to continue to pursue Ingold this coming fall and winter.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Rochester Rockets:

Rochester and veteran head coach Derek Leonard has build up arguably the state's best overall public high school football program in the State of Illinois over the past decade plus, as the Rockets under Leonard have won 8 state football titles and have won double digit wins in 13 straight seasons. Derek Leonard has posted an amazing 184-36 record in 18 seasons with an amazing 84 percent winning record over those 128 seasons at Rochester. The 2022 Rockets finished the season with a 11-2 record posting two losses to rival SHG.

The biggest question I see for Rochester in 2023? Can the Rockets reload in a handful of key spots especially on offense (QB/RB/OL) and win the Central State 8 conference title outright? Look for Rochester senior QB/WR Parker Gillespie to get a shot at winning the starting quarterback spot, and I'm also expecting the Rockets offense to revert back to a bit more of it's traditional five wide spread passing game, as opposed to the Rockets offense led by graduated QB Keeton Reiss who threw it like a quarterback but also ran the football like a fullback. I like the overall talent here and I'll say the Rockets wind up with a 9-0/8-1 regular season record win the CS8 and have a great shot at another state championship in 2023.

Coach Ivlow

Now that the season is over and the hoopla has calmed down some... just thought I'd write about coach some.

A long time ago I wrote that being a Brook fan was like being a Cubs fan, this was before 2011 and 2016 respectively, as that championship was an elusive lil devil. But coach was able to clear that hurdle for us. Not only that, he managed to keep the the name strong despite a substantial influx in schedule quality. It's a little different when Andrew is the toughest team on the docket. As far as being personable I don't think I've ever met someone that didn't like coach Ivlow as a person, that goes for random fans, to player parents, to players themselves.

If you're reading, thanks coach and good luck moving forward with whatever you choose to do.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

We run most of our camp in July on site. 7v7s are typically with 1-3 other schools. We will host 3 schools here as well.

Impact Player for Batavia

Batavia senior to be QB Ryan Boe (6-foot-3, 205 pounds) has been leading the Bulldogs offense since his sophomore season. Boe, who is an effective pocket passer along with a good sized, all around impressive athlete is in line for a big 2023 senior season for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have a tom of talent year in and year out including the 2023 roster....but if this team can make a deep post-season run look for Ryan Boe to have a huge season for Batavia.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Batavia Bulldogs:

Batavia and head coach Dennis Piron has built the Bulldogs program into a tear in and year out state title contender in Class 7A. Batavia in 2022 posted a 6-3 regular season record but then got on a Class 7A post season roll. The Bulldogs made the Class 7A state playoff field and defeated Rockford Guilford, Hersey, Yorkville and Lake Zurich before losing to Mt. Carmel in the Class 7A state title game. Batatvia has made the IHSA state playoff field in 11 straight seasons under Dennis Piron and led the Bulldogs to state titles in 2013 and 2017 along with last season's state final runner up-.

The biggest question I see for Batavia in 2023? Can the Bulldogs reload in some key positions including replacing several key multi-year starters gone to graduation this summer? The Bulldogs always find a way to reload and the offense will be asked to carry the load early while the defense gets some experience, and I fully expect this team to again challenge for the rugged Dukane conference titlw along with being a state title contender in 2023.

Update: What's next for Simeon 2025 3 star DL Christopher Burgess Jr.?

Chicago (Ill.) Simeon 2025 three star ranked defensive end recruit Christopher Burgess Jr. (6-foot-5, 235 pounds) has been adding Power 5 offers this spring at an impressive rate. Burgess Jr. takes a few minutes out of his day to fill us in on his upcoming summer plans in this latest recruiting update.

"We have two weeks of school left before summer break," Burgess Jr. said. "We are getting out of school a lot earlier now then we used to and it's a good thing. We used to not get out of school until almost the end of June and it was hard to get out to do things like college camps. We are now more in line with the suburban schools and it makes it easier to start up team camp and get to college camps and visits now."

Burgess Jr. is starting to get his summer schedule in order.

"I'm going top get out to a lot of colleges and make visits and a few camps. I know I'm going to camp for sure this summer at Notre Dame, Michigan and also Ohio State. Those are my for sure three camps this summer. I also want to get out and see schools like Georgia, USC and Miami (Fla.) but then again I would love to see them all to be honest. I'm just going to try my best to see as many schools as I can, but it also costs money and also takes a lot of time."

So what does Burgess Jr. look for when he makes a college campus visit?

"I'm looking for how much love will that school show me along with the rest of the players. Can I keep building a good relationship with the coaches at each school and I want to get to know both the coaches and the players well. Relationships are very important to me and just seeing how I fit in at each school is also important both on the field and off the field and socially."

Christopher Burgess Jr. has multiple scholarship offers.

My Take on Christopher Burgess Jr. Recruiting: Christopher Burgess Jr. is really blowing up and has added a ton of new offers from across the country. Burgess Jr. is planning to make visits but again the reality of those visits and camps is that you can't be everywhere. Look for Burgess Jr. to have a very good summer camp season and more major offers to follow. As far as visits are concerned this summer look for Burgess Jr. to make a handful of visits but with the NCAA now allowing unlimited official visits just from a cost standpoint I'm guessing Burgess Jr. will be holding off on those until this time next year.

Update: ICCP 2025 ILB Dominik Hulak has summer plans

Elmhurst (Ill.) IC Catholic Prep 2025 ILB 3 star ranked recruit Dominik Hulak (6-foot-3, 225 pounds) has remained busy this spring and has been in the process of setting up some upcoming summer schedule which will include some college visits along with some visits as well. Hulak updates us on his latest recruiting news, summer plans and more in this update.

"We are taking final exams this week and then we are done for the school year," Hulak said. "I've receive3d a ton of summer camp invitations this spring and right now I'm just in the process of sorting everything out and putting together a schedule. It will involve both some camps and some visits this summer."

Hulak already has a handful of cap plans set for this summer. .

"I'm all set to camp this summer at Notre Dame, Purdue and also Wisconsin. Stanford also invited me to come out for a camp and to also make a visit and see the school in person. It's a long haul to get out to Stanford but I'm working on getting out there this summer. I still have some other schools that I'm hoping to camp or visit this summer and I'm still trying to get my head around it all along with not missing any of my team responsibilities."

So what will Hulak be looking for when he makes a college visit this summer?

"It all differs by school to be honest. I've already made visits to places like Notre Dame but not Purdue. When I visit Purdue I want to see whay they have to offer and compare it to some of the other schools I've visited already. My first visit to a school is always more football based and focused, hut then the second visit is much more focused for me in regards to things like academics and just more education related."

Hulak is also excited for his upcoming 2023 IHSA football season.

"WE start our team camp closer towards the end of June so the coaches give us some time to fo out and camp at colleges. We will workout as a team and lift in the meantime but we really crank things up later in June. We bring back a lot of strong players from last season, and we've also had a few transfer come in who are really good players."

Dominik Hulak has multiple scholarship offers.

My Take on Dominik Hulak Recruiting: A hard nosed no-nonsense player and athlete who will no question continue to rise this summer. Hulak was really impressive in 2022 yet he also has room to grow and improve including just getting more seat time at linebacker and getting more experience. Hulak I feel will be a top ranked/highly sought after name in the Class of 2025 who has a real chance to become a nationally ranked name in the Class of 2025.

Impact Player for Andrew:

Andrew 2025 OL/DL Michael McDonough (6-foot-3, 275 pounds) is already holding Power 5 scholarship offers from Illinois and Colorado along with also drawing recruiting interest and attention on a national level this spring. McDonough is just a highly advanced linemen who continue to grow, gets bigger and stronger each tear and who's overall game will just continue to get better and better from here on out.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Andrew Thunderbolts:

Andrew and head coach Adam Lewandowski was able to get the Thunderbolts to q 6-3 regular season record along with getting Andrew into the Class 8A state playoff field in 2022. The Thunderbolts defeated Huntley in Round 1 then lost to Warren Township in second round action to finish the season with a 7-4 record. Andrew under Adam Lewandowski has made the IHSA state playoff field in four of the last five seasons.

The biggest question I see for Andrew in 2023? Can the Thunderbolts reload on both sides of the football this summer with just five starters back from a season ago (2 offense 3 defense) and remain a playoff caliber team playing a pretty strong regular season slate? I'm looking for Andrew to post a 6-3/5-4 caliber season in 2023 and will make it back into the 2023 IHSA state playoff field.

My Take: Rochester 2024 DE Lance Ingold commits to NIU

NIU hosted several of it's top prospects and recruits on Sunday and the Huskies offered and landed a quick verbal commitment from Rochester 2024 DE Lance Ingold. Ingold was the second in state commitment for NIU on Sunday and the 5th overall in state pledge for NIU in the Class of 2024.

Ingold who is also a multi sport athlete at Rochester (football/baseball) was starting to see increased football recruiting looks and attention from various FBS and FCS schools this spring. Ingold added offers recently from SIU and schools such as Illinois, Iowa, Purdue and others who like Ingold's upside but also held off on extending him an offer until they had a chance to see him in a camp and work out in pads. NIU once again was in early on a kid like Lance Ingold....was able to build up a relationship between his positional and also his recruiting coach coach at NIU before really any other schools showed interest and that timing again plays a huge positive for NIU in it's recruiting approach. This was also one of the key factors for Ingold in his decision to pledge to NIU.

Ingold has the look and physical tools that no question are a positive here. Ingold, at 6-foot-6 and currently at 225 pounds has an impressive frame, wide shoulders and he will be able to carry much more weight at the college level. I can see Ingold getting to day 250-260 pounds pretty easily while also maintaining his impressive speed and quickness.

I was able to see Lance Ingold play live as a sophomore in 2022 against SHG in the Class 4A semifinals. Ingold was an impact player on both sides of the line (tight end/defensive end) who at times was a real game changer who has good overall instincts and upside/potential. I was also able to see a kid like Ingold who still has a ton of development and learning ahead of him as well including improving his overall technique as a defensive end. It seemed like Ingold was playing more off instincts and natural ability and jsut was able to out physical opposing linemen.....which is great at the high school level but will fall short at the D1 level.

Room for improvement? Besides the obvious need to add more good weight and strength, Ingold will also need to improve his overall speed and quickness along with adding to his overall pass rush moves and technique. Yet like many other NIU pledges.....while Ingold might be a bit raw in places and need work in some places....his overall value and upside is really impressive and intriguing.

Rivals currently has Lance Ingold as a unranked name in the Class of 2024. I would recommend that Lance Ingold start off as a low to mid three star ranked player here and a name that could end up over playing this early conservative star ranking. Again I really like how NIU does it's own evaluation and advanced work and how they aren't afraid to project and take a chance on a kid....and Lance Ingold is another prime example of how NIU definitely marches to the beat of it's own drum.
