2023 Preseason Polling Talk: Class 5A

First draft/first crack. Still lots for me to dig into go over etc before I consider/make this as final.

Below is the 2023 Preseason Enrollment Guide used for determining Class for all football playing schools and thanks to Steve Soucie as always for his hard work. This is for Class 8A and I'mm continue to add and tweak things etc,

Feel free to post your own Top 10 in 5A....schools who I might be overlooking etc fire away. Again like all of the polls at this time of the year this will change between now and when I make these final later in August.

My Early 2023 Preseason Class 5A Top 10 poll

1. Nazareth Academy
2. Peoria
3. Prairie Ridge
4. SHG
5. Morgan Park
6. Joliet Catholic
7. Sycamore
8. Sterling
9. Highland
10. Wheaton St. Francis

Others under Consideration: Fenwick/Carbondale/Decatur MacArthur/Mount Vernon/Mascoutah/Triad/Antioch/Glenbard South/Lakes/Benet Academy/Carmel Catholic/Metamora/Grayslake North

My Thoughts on 5A: Overall 5A feels pretty solid here and this could wind up being a stronger than I first expected. Nazareth Academy looks for another state title and has a ton of young talent still on hand. Peoria will break in a newly renovated Peoria Stadium this fall and the Lions are also loaded again in 2023. Prairie Ridge will have depth experience and talent on both sides of the line which is always huge for the Wolves. Morgan Park is also a very strong team with a ton of multi-year starters, several of who are seniors in 2023. JCA will need to reload a bit this summer and the schedule is no joke....but they will still be a handful this fall. Sycamore is also deep and experienced this fall and Sterling is Sterling....and will be just very solid once again. Schools like Fenwick/Carmel/Benet Academy will all beat each other up in the regular season but all three have talent back and will be potential sleepers in the 5A post-season. Glenbard South has some talented skills back led by Notre Dame commit WR Cam Williams and senior QB Michael Champagne.

Impact Player for the Round Lake Panthers:

Round Lake senior OL William Cole (6-foot-4, 260 pounds) is truly a do it all students and athlete at Round Lake. Cole, who plays football, wrestling, track, concert choir, school play stage crew while also taking all honors classes. Look for Cole to continue to draw more recruiting looks and attention this summer and fall.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Round Lake Panthers:

Round Lake and first year head coach Matt Milazzo takes over the Panthers this summer. Round Lake finished the 2022 season with 1-8 record and this program hasn't made it back to the IHSA state playoff field since the 2001 season.

The biggest question facing Round Lake in 2023? Can the Panthers reload at several key positions while also begin to rebuild the overall environment within the Round Lake football program beginning this fall? This is a football program that has just not been able to find any real sustained success and hopefully a new head coach and a new direction/focus can begin for Round Lake football this fall and beyond. I'll say the Panthers wind up with a 2-7 season in 2023.

New: My One Big Question for the Morris Football Team

Welcome to the latest feature simply called My One Big Question. I use the EDGYTIM/Marquee Sports 2022 Final Chicagoland Top 30 poll as my guide ansd break down all 30 teams and provide you My One Big Question for all 30 teams.....I will also come up with the same One Big Question for several state wide programs as well.

Today it's the 2022 Final Chicagoland Top 30 ranked Morris Football Team

My One Big Question for Morris? Can Morris reload in a few key positions this summer and make a deep post-season run in 2023?

Morris (still no mascot) and head coach Alan Thorson has continued to keep the football program a consistent winner during his tenure. Thorson led Morris to an 11-2 record in 2022 as Morris made the Class 5A state playoff field and defeated LaSalle Peru, Centralia and Mahomet Seymour then lost to People in the 5A state semifinal round. Thorson has posted a 96-44 record in 13 seasons and has finished second in state in 2012 and also in 2017.

Morris for 2023? Look for Morris to rely on a strong core of returning starters for 2023 with 6 starters back on offense along with 5 starters back on defense. The offense has some long term starters back this fall including senior QB Carter Button, senior RB/LB Jacob Swartz plus senior WR/DB AJ Zweeres while the defense also has experience and depth as well. Morris last spring graduated four starting offensive linemen along with and a handful of starting linebackers and the biggest question is can Morris reload this summer and fill those holes?

My Answer? Morris always has overall numbers and always has talent and depth. Morris will use it's first two non conference game to get those two position groups up and running smoothly before the Interstate 8 White schedule kicks in. Year in and year out this football program, located in one of the most supportive towns going for IHSA football just finds a way and I would not be shocked to see Morris make yet another deep tun in 2023.

Next Up? #29 ranked Wheaton St. Francis

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

Impact Player for the Lincoln Way West Warriors:

Lincoln Way West junior WR/DB Austin Rowswell is a big time track talent who is also developing into a potential Power 5 name in the Class of 2025. Rowswell has impressive speed, burst and wiggle along with showing impressive hands and ball skills. Rowswell is currently holding early scholarship offers from Ball State and EIU and will no question see his overall stock rise this fall.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Lincoln Way West Warriors:

Lincoln Way West and head coach Luke Lokanc led the Warriors to a 3-6 record in 2022. Lokanc has posted a 13-12 record in three seasons as Lincoln Way West and the school is entering it's 15th season of playing varsity football in 2023.

The biggest question facing Lincoln Way West in 2023? Can the Warriors replace 124 graduated starters from a season ago and get back to playing winning football this fall and back into the post season. The Warriors offense will be solid as senior QB Cole Crafton, who's also a baseball prospect will lead the Warriors passing game and has the ability and potential to become a higher level quarterback at the next level. I'm looking for the Warriors to post a 6-3 record in the regular season and they will get back into the post-season this fall.

Probably should keep eyes on this. Says will meet before bylaw proposals in October. Interesting that this is stemming from those bylaw proposals last year, which garnered some feedback.

Impact Player for the St Charles North North Stars:

St Charles North and head coach Rob Pomazak.has plenty of higher level names to watch this fall, but the one player I feel is essential for this program to get into the post-season and make a deep run? St Charles North senior TE/LB Jake Furtney. Furtney, who is already verbally committed to Army is a key leader and high level performer on both sides of the football. Furtney will again be asked to provide major leadership and production on and off the field in 2023.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 St. Charles North North Stars:

St. Charles North and head coach Rob Pomazak was able to lead the North Stars to a 2022 Dukane conference title with a 8-1 record. The North Stars made the Class 7A state playoff field and defeated Maine West and Hoffman Estates then lost to St. Rita in the 7A quarterfinal round. St. Charles North head coach Rob Pomazak has posted a 71-31 record in 10 seasons and has led the program to the IHSA state playoffs 6 times over the past 9 playoff seasons.

The biggest question facing St. Charles North in 2023? Can the North Stars reload at a few key spots and make a deep post-season run this fall? The North Stars had a ton of talent back this fall including junior QB Ethan Plumb who will be a very rare 3 year varsity starter for St. Charles North. St Charles North will need to reload a bit upfront on the offensive line along with developing a bit more depth at spots.....yet this is a pretty dangerous team potentially in 2023. I will predict that St Charles North finishes the 2023 regular season with a 8-1/7-2 record and this team could also make a deep run in Class 7A.

Impact Player for the Lake Zurich Bears:

Lake Zurich junior RB Jackson Piggott has been a varsity mainstay and starter for the Bears program for the last few seasons. Piggott is a good sized and physical player, who also has good speed and quickness and is very capable of playing multiple positions for the Bears when needed.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Lake Zurich Bears:

Lake Zurich and head coach Ron Plantz are coming off a highly successful 2022 season as the Bears posted a 8-1 regular season record. The Bears made the Class 7A IHSA state playoff field and defeated Larkin, Wheaton North and Pekin before losing to Batavia 27-7 in the 7A state semifinal round. Lake Zurich under Ron Plantz has posted a 24-19 record in 4 seasons leading the Bears football program.

The biggest question facing Lake Zurich in 2023? Can the Bears reload in some key spots and continue to make deeper post-season runs on a more consistent basis. Look for Lake Zurich to seek some answers this summer to fill some key holes (QB/RB/WR/LB/DB) and I can see this team staying at the top of the North Suburban conference and to again make a strong tun in 7A. I'll say Lake Zurich ends up with a 8-1/7-2 regular season record and to again challenge Warren Township for the conference title.

3. Edwardsville
4. Brother Rice
5. St. Charles North

9. Kenwood Academy
10. Hononegah

Others under Consideration: Harlem/Norman Community/Pekin/Wheaton North/Wheaton South/Jacobs/Bradley/Glenbard North/Downers Grove North/Prospect/Willowbrook/Yorkville

My Thoughts on 7A: I really like Edwardsville obviously here, and the Tigers have some impact names back along with a roster that looks ready to make noise once they get past you know who in the Southwestern Conference. Quincy is a team I've been high on since last season, saw them live in 7on7 and the offense and the skills are for real. Moline to me will be one of the top WS6 teams again to watch along with Sterling. Hononegah gets the slight nod over Harlem from the NIC-10 but both will be in the hunt for the conference title. 7A to me is much more wide open with less overall talented teams compared to 8A in my opinion and expect the 8A field to load up in my Chicagoland Top 30 again this preseason.

Impact Player for the Shepard Astros:

The Astros and head coach John Rone welcomes back a handful of key starters for the 2023 season. Junior WR Cameron Tryon (6-foot-1, 170 pounds) along with junior DB Anthony Loughran (5-foot-11, 185 pounds) are both speedy, quick and athletic players who have a chance to open up several eyes this fall. Both players are also more than capable of playing multiple positions this fall.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Shepard Astros:

Shepard and head coach John Rone ended the 2022 season with a 3-6 record, but the Astros easily with a break here or there (Plainfield East loss 23-22 and a 32-29 loss to Argo) and this team could have been a state playoff team in 2022. Shepard under John Rone has posted a 27-19 record in 5 seasons and the Astros have made the IHSA state playoffs in 6 out of the last 7 seasons.

The biggest question facing Shepard in 2023? Can the Astros reload in several key spots (OL/DL) and build up some depth while also adding more overall numbers on all levels again this fall? I'm looking for the Astros to get out of the gates quickly in 2023 against a winnable non conference slate and this team I'll say winds up with a 5-4 record and gets back into the IHSA state playoff field in 2023.
