Impact Player for the St. Rita Mustangs:

St. Rita last season was able to strike gold in the running game as senior RB DJ Stewart (6-foot-0, 225 pounds) rumbled his way to a big junior season running behind a very strong Mustangs offensive line. While St Rita is much more pass friendly over the past several seasons, having a strong and capable running game remains the program's identity and calling card. Look for DJ Stewart to play a huge role this coming season once again for St Rita.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 St. Rita Mustangs:

St. Rita and then head coach Todd Kuska led the Mustangs to a 10-3 overall record in 2022 in Kuska's final season leading the St Rita football program. St. Rita posted a 7-2 regular season record, then made the Class 7A state playoff field and defeated Geneva, Prospect and St Charles North before losing to longtime rival and eventual Class 7A state champion Mount Carmel to finish the season. Todd Kuska wrapped up his St Rita head coaching career with a 216-94 in 25 seasons and won the Class 7A state title in 2006 along with state runner up seasons in 2019 (5A) and in 2021 (7A).

The biggest question facing St. Rita in 2023? Can alumni and new Mustangs head coach Martin Hopkins keep the Mustangs playing at the highest level starting this season? St. Rita welcomes back a nice core of 11 returning starters (5 offense 6 defense) along with some really talented players. However, the schedule remains rough and just getting to 5 wins this season will be a challenge. I see St. Rita finding it's way to a 6-3/5-4 caliber season and then becoming a big time threat in the 6A state playoff field.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

6/29 vs. Wauconda
7/12 CSL 7 on 7
7/13 vs. Vernon Hills
7/20 vs. Jacobs

Impact Player for the Glenbrook North Spartans:

Glenbrook North senior TE Patrick Schaller gave Northwestern a very early verbal commitment and remains committed to the Wildcats. Schaller has impressive length and ball skills, runs well and also is just a high level athlete will plenty of development and growth remaining. Schaller will no question be asked to provide both leadership on and off the field along with delivering a high level of production on both sides of the football this fall for the Spartans.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Glenbrook North Spartans:

Glenbrook North and head coach Matt Purdy just missed making the 2022 IHSA state playoff field and edned the season with a 4-5 record. The Spartans had two games in particular that ended up costing GBN a potential spot in the post-season with close loses to Rolling Meadows in Week 4 (17-14 loss) and a Week 6 loss to New Trier (24-17). Glenbrook North head coach Matt Purdy has posted a 13-20 overall record and his entering his 5th season as the Spartans head coach.

The biggest question facing Glenbrook North in 2023? Can the Spartans get a strong season from it's experienced starters along with finding a way to win those tight games this fall. The schedule for Glenbrook North is not easy whatsoever but getting out of the gates is an absolute key for the Spartans. I'm looking for GBN to find a way to 5 wins and gets into the IHSA playoff since the 2018 season.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

7v7 on 6/15 at Richards (Richards, Marist, Lyons, Lockport)
7v7 on 7/11 at Naperville North

Impact Player for the Marist Redhawks:

Marist will no question need to reload quite a bit this season on both sides of the football, so we have a lot more new faces than varsity experienced names this fall. Senior RB Marc Coy is a talented runner who also has impressive hands and no question will be one of the go to guys in the always explosive Marist spread offense. Coy, who is holding multiple FBS/FCS offers this summer will also continue to draw more looks this summer and fall.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Marist Redhawks:

Marist and head coach Ron Dawczak was able to lead the Redhawks to a 7-4 overall record in 2022. Marist finished the 2022 regular season with a 6-3 record, then beat Naperville North is Class 8A opening round action then lost to York to end the season. Marist under Ron Dawczak has posted a 46-15 record in 5 seasons and the Redhawks program has missed the IHSA state playoffs just once (2014) since the 2008 season.

The biggest question facing Marist in 2023? Can the Redhawks reload at a number of key spots this summer (QB/WR/LB/DB) along with surviving a very difficult regular season schedule. Marist in more years than not have impressive underclassmen talent and depth and look for names such as OT Rico Schrieber to step forward and emerge this fall for the Redhawks. I'll say Marist winds up posting a 6-3 regular season record and again makes it's way into the post-season.

ESCC 2023 predictions

I haven’t posted in a dog’s age, but was just wondering what you all think will be the top to bottom of the ESCC this season. I know it’s all split up between blue, white etc. Will JC be the team to beat? Notre Dame? St. Pats? Ignats? Does my old school Viator have a chance? Sorry, trying to catch up on who the real contenders are this year.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

Illinois 7on7
McCracken 7on7
IHSFCA 7on7

Impact Player for the SHG Cyclones:

SHG is no question going to look very young in 2023 after graduating one of the school's best ever classes....a senior class that won multiple state titles in multiple sports. SHG is always led by a strong quarterback and senior QB Levi Hanauer sure looks like someone who will develop and lead this team back into the post-season in 2023. While lots of things will be new in 2023 at SHG starting with new head coach John Allison, Allison's offense will remain and look for Levi Hanauer to lead the high flying Cyclones offense this fall.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 SHG Cyclones:

SHG is coming off winning the 2022 Class 4A state title and posting an undefeated 14-0 record as Hall of Fame head coach Ken Leonard wrapped up his amazing IHSA football coaching career. New SHG head coach John Allison takes over after being the Cyclones offensive coordinator and will look to reload the football program in 2023. The Cyclones have simply become one of the State of Illinois elite football programs and has been now for decades.

The biggest question facing SHG in 2023? Can the Cyclones get on track under a new head coach, get several new faces up to speed and keep the program winning as usual? Sure, it's not a great look for SHG having just 3 starters back for 2023, but this program always has talent and always has numbers and that will be the case in 2023. No question ever CS8 team are licking their lips and planning to "get" SHG this season....I would not count out this program of anything just yet. I see SHG finding it's way to say a 7-2 caliber season in 2023 and then getting into the Class 5A state playoff field. I would also not be shocked to see this SHG team start out of the gates a bit slow....then build up speed and momentum later in the 2023 season.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

June 29th ISU Team Camp
July 22nd Panther 7 on 7 / Lineman Camp @washington

Impact Player for the Washington Panthers:

Washington senior OL Henry Worrick (6-foot-0, 270 pounds) is a multi-year starter and team leader for the Panthers. Worrick will again be asked to provide both production and leadership for Washington on and off the field.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Washington Panthers:

Washington and veteran head coach Darrell Crouch will be coaching his final season in 2023 as Crouch has announced his plans to step down and retire after the 2023 season, as current assistant coach Todd Stevens has been already named to replace Crouch for the 2024 season. In 2022 the Panthers finished with a 6-3 regular season record and made the Class 6A state playoff field. The Panthers lost to Bremen in opening round action to end the season with a 6-4 record. Darrell Crouch has posted a 145-52 record in 19 seasons at Washington as the Panthers have made the state playoff field for 15 straight seasons.

The biggest question facing Washington in 2023? Can the Panthers settle on a starting quarterback this summer and make a deep run for head coach Darrell Crouch in his final season coaching the Panthers? I'm looking for the Panthers to post a 7-2/6-3 regular season record to to again make it into the IHSA state playoff field. The 2023 Panthers welcome back nearly every starter from last season and that experience should be a real positive for this fall.

Titan 7on7 @Glenwood HS - July 7th
Illinois Wesleyan University Team Camp - July 16-19th
Washington HS 7on7 - July 22nd

Impact Player for Glenwood Titans:

Glenwood senior OL/DL Mark Helm (6-foot-5, 255 pounds) is already holding several FCS level scholarship offers this summer. Helm, who is the younger brother of former Glenwood and current NFL tight end Daniel Helm. Helm is a big and physical linemen who I'm projecting to also play on the Titans defensive line this coming season as well.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Glenwood Titans:

Glenwood and head coach David Hay was able to get the Titans to a 7-2 regular season record in 2022 and earned a Class 6A state playoff spot. The Titans lost to Quincy in the Class 6A opening round to finish the season at 7-3. Glenwood under head coach David Hay has made the IJSA state playoff field in his 7 seasons leading the Titans program, and the Titans IHSA playoff appearance streak now stands at 19 straight seasons last missing the playoffs in 2002.

The biggest question facing Glenwood in 2023? Can the Titans reload at a handful of key positions (QB/DL) and continue to challenge for a CS8 conference title and making it's 20th straight IHSA state playoff appearance. I'm looking for Glenwood to certainly be in the upper tier of the CS8 title race this fall (Rochester/SHG/Springfield) and I'll say they wind up with another 7-2 regular season record.

Have an issue or three? Fire away? Make a case for a team or two? Cool fire away. Love getting your early feedback here. This first draft will change.....

Feel free to post your own Top 10 in *A....schools who I might be overlooking etc fire away. Again like all of the polls at this time of the year this will change between now and when I make these final later in August.

My Early 2023 Preseason Class 8A Top 10 poll

1. Lincoln Way East
2. Loyola
3. York
4. Maine South
5. Lyons Township
6. Palatine
7. Warren Township
8. Marist
9. Glenbard West
10. Neuqua Valley

Others under consideration: Lockport/Minooka/Naperville North/Homewood Flossmoor/Barrington/Bolingbrook/St Ignatius/Glenbrook South/Hinsdale Central/Naperville Central/O'Fallon/Oswego East/South Elgin/New Trier

My Early Take on Class 8A: Stacked.....again. The Top 120 is obviously strong and even the next 5-7 teams that would get into the next tier are maybe as strong as several other teams currently ranked ahead of them for now. It's weird to see St Ignatius in 8A....O'Fallon will be pretty solid again and I would put them in the next 3-4 teams into the field but for now they are on the outside looking in. The Southwest Prairie will be up in and air between Minooka Oswego East and a few others....same with the Southwest Suburban Blue with Lockport/Bolingbrook (Raiders still have some major game breaking players but questions still remain for now). The DVC still scares me a bit and I liked what I saw from NV so they get in over NN and NC for now. The Central Sub South will also shake out and I like both GBS and NT. I get the feeling Barrington will be better in 2023.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

Impact Player for Quincy Notre Dame:

Quincy Notre Dame senior WR/DB Aiden Klauser is a two way starter and multi-year varsity player for the Raiders. Klauser has good size, height and length and is also a fearless receiver who also shows good hands and ball skills. Look for Klauser to continue to draw recruiting interest this summer and fall for the Raiders.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Quincy Notre Dame Raiders:

Quincy Notre Dame and head coach Jack Cornell led the Raiders to a 5-4 regular season record in 2022 and into the Class 4A IHSA state playoff field. Quincy Notre Dame lost to Macomb in the 4A opening round to finish the season at 5-5. Quincy Notre Dame under Jack Cornell has made the IHDSA state playoff field for three straight seasons and Cornell has posted a 27-21 overall record in 5 seasons.

The biggest question facing Quincy Notre Dame in 2023? Can the Raiders win in the Independent ranks one more time in 2023 and find it's way back into the post-season? Quincy Notre Dame will (happily) leave the Independent ranks after the 2023 season then will join the Central State 8 conference after spending years as an independent school. Look for QND to rely on a nice core of returning starters back in the fold in 2023 and I'll say the Raiders wind up with a 6-/5-4 regular season record and earns a fourth straight IHSA state playoff bid.

First draft/first crack. Still lots for me to dig into go over etc before I consider/make this as final.

Have an issue or three? Fire away? Make a case for a team or two? Cool fire away. Love getting your early feedback here. This first draft will change.....

Below is the 2023 Preseason Enrollment Guide used for determining Class for all football playing schools and thanks to Steve Soucie as always for his hard work. This is for Class 8A and I'mm continue to add and tweak things etc,

Feel free to post your own Top 10 in 6A....schools who I might be overlooking etc fire away. Again like all of the polls at this time of the year this will change between now and when I make these final later in August.

2023 Preseason Class 6A Enrollment Guide for Polling Purposes

My Early 2023 Preseason Class 6A Top 10 poll

1. East St. Louis
2. Providence Catholic
3. Kankakee
4. St Rita
5. Geneva
6. Lemont
7. Glenwood
8. Cary Grove
9. Simeon
10. Crete-Monee

Others under Consideration: Lake Forest/Normal West/Rock Island/Springfield/Champaign Centennial/Dunlap/Crystal Lake Central/Crystal Lake South/Deerfield/Niles Notre Dame/Kaneland/Bloomington

My Thoughts on 6A: Loaded with several good teams and I can see several teams swing in and out of the Top 10 quite a bit in 2023. East St. Louis once again will take on some big time non conference opponents and even with a slow start this team will finish strong. Providence was a big surprise in Tyler Plantz first season and Year 2 will be no fluke. Kankakee still has talent and speed. Cary Grove gets the nod in over a few other FVC teams here and once again the FVC will be a big factor here. Geneva is getting a ton of preseason smoke and they will be really challenges IF they can get to 5 plus wins.....not an easy task in the Dukane conference. I see easily 4-5 teams in the others would could make a real case of being in the Preseason Top 10 right now.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

IHSFCA 7 on 7 @ Chatham (6/23)

Impact Player for Springfield:

Springfield senior TE/DE Paul Hartman III is already holding scholarship offers and interest from various FBS and FCS schools this summer. Hartman III has been electric this summer for the Senators and looks to be moving to wide receiver full time this coming fall. Hartman III could also end up playing on the defensive side of the football and his athletic ability, quickness and length/reach could no question provide a serious pass rush threat in the Senators defense in 2023.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Springfield Senators:

Springfield and head coach Jon Hebb posted a 4-5 record in 2022 and just missed out on the IHSA state playoff field. Springfield had one game in particular (Week 6 vs MacArthur) that could have easily went to Senators way. The Senators made the IHSA state football playoff field for four straight seasons under then head coach Roy Gully before Gully retired and passed the baton to Jon Hebb.

The biggest question facing Senators in 2023? Are the Senators able yto play at the highest level of the Central State 8, pull off a key win or two against the top tier teams in the CS8 (SHG/Rochester/Glenwood) and get back into the IHSA state playoff field. The Senators welcome back 16 returning starters (8 offense 8 defense) and will also play it's home games at newly renovated Memorial Stadium, a surface and a field that will do nothing but benefit the Senators team speed. I'll say Springfield finds it's way to say a 6-3 record in 2023 and gets back into the IHSA state playoff field.
