My second favorite thread of the week! And an division matchup week!

Blue
BR +1 vs Mount Carmel
Marist +25 vs Loyola (what a massive line)

Green
Rita -17 vs Naz (Think Rita wins this one by 3 TDs)
Benet -1 vs ND (Not enough offensive playmakers for the Dons)

Orange
JCA -37 vs St. Laurence
Providence -15 vs Montini

Purple
Marian Catholic +10 vs St. Viator
St. Patrick -10 vs Carmel

Red
LW -36 vs DePaul
Leo +1 vs MCC

White
Marmion +28 vs Fenwick
DLS +34 vs Iggy

After a bye week for myself, I have returned...maybe not fresh and ready, but I am here.

Mount Carmel 34 Brother Rice 28: I'm simply going with the Caravan because they are home and coming off a humiliating performance for their standards. Me picking against BR is not an indictment on them in this game.

Loyola 38 Marist 21: Loyola doesn't have much of an issue taking care of business

Saint Rita 35 Naz 14: It was good to see Naz put up some numbers last week, but they won't be putting up many this week.

Notre Dame 17 Benet 16: A playoff game in week 6. Going with the Dons in an ugly (but beautiful) type of win

Joliet Catholic 42 Saint Laurence 7: The Hilltopper Machine just keeps a rollin'.

Providence 36 Montini 13: Providence went from darlings after beating Fenwick to this being a must win to make the playoffs. They take care of business this week.

Saint Viator 35 Marian of the Heights 13: While the Lions playoff chances took a massive blow last week, they have been a pretty competitive team since week two. They take care of the Spartans with ease this week.

Carmel 26 Saint Patrick 22: This is your classic Purple Division matchup where everyone is essentially equal. Another playoff game in week 6 for both programs as well. Going with Carmel in a coin flip.

Lena-Winslow 49 Gordon Tech 6: Lena-Winslow will take great pride in roughing up a CCL/ESCC team.

Leo 33 Marian of the Sticks 31: The Lions have lost by a total of 17 points in their 3 losses. They deserve a lot of respect for how they have played this year against schools that have ten fold the numbers they do. I'm tossing the Lions a bone (or a steak) here and I think they get a nice road win against the reeling Hurricanes

Fenwick 38 Marmion 28: Luckily for Marmion, a loss here doesn't necessarily hurt their postseason chances as they should be able to win out. Fenwick begins their postseason prep here.

Saint Ignatius 35 De La Salle 6: What a perfect let down game for the Wolfpack after last week's historical win.

Anything exciting happen week 5? Seemed like a calm weekend. Here we go week 6, the first group of playoff qualifiers will pop up after this weekend and that means more excitement. My picks…

BR +1

BR +1 Just because I like Xs and Os, it will be interesting to see how MC DC tries to bottle up BR O.

M +25 If the number’s right, I’d be tempted to take Marist on the moneyline. See how well LA can do in week 2 post Maldonado injury.

Naz +17 Home repairs are up for their first inspection. See how it goes.

NND +1 Playoffs start early, figuratively and literally, Thursday in Lisle

JCA -37 Riding the Hillmen all season

PC -15 Celtics at home in a must win

StV -10 Still a tiny, tiny chance for Marian, depending how many 4-5 teams can get in, with a loss but 0 chance for the Lions if they lose with Iggy and MC left on their schedule

StP -10 Shamrocks will be fine. 13-0 at half vs the Mustangs last week until worn down. Don’t think they’ll wear down this weekend and win comfortably

DeP +36 Interesting game that has me intrigued for no other reason than the differences in geography and program histories

MCanes -1 Little known RockSoup fact: Mrs. Rock’s side of the family is a LEO family with a sprinkle of St. Laurence and St. Rita and a dash of Mt. Carmel

Marmion +28 Solid Cadets give Friar a good game not reflected in the Gambletron number

DLS +34 Boehmer’s boys will battle till the end.

St Rita people were much nicer than I anticipated. Their team battled their asses off too, physical game that was sometimes chippy but not in any sort of disrespectful manner. Hats off to their team, hopefully they get healthy and make a serious run. I know it’s been mentioned here but Naz has found another superstar QB, very very impressive. Hopefully Naz can pull out the next 3, because no one in 5a will want anything to do with them come playoff time.

Candidly, with regard to Loyola’s remaining games, I can see them possibly losing to Marist and / or MC this season. I hope it doesn’t happen, but it wouldn’t surprise me. As I stated before the season started, this LA team is good, but very inexperienced. They had to replace 16-18 starters from the spring squad. A team I believe to be the best Loyola team I’ve ever seen personally. That includes ‘91, ‘93 and 2015. Moreover, LA is without arguably their 2 best offensive players (Kyle and Maldonado) - this doesn’t help matters, but next guy up. Additionally, their 2nd string RB may be out too. (Please note that this doesn’t take away anything from the teams LA has already played this season - Rita, Fenwick and Rice are all really good squads)

This year’s Rambler team reminds me a lot of the 2018 state champion team. They have / will struggle during the regular season and will make a solid run in the postseason. A solid Loyola run is the quarters or semis. Most schools would kill for that level of sustained success.

Good luck to Marist this afternoon! Hoping for a good game and that all the boys stay healthy! Great day to be a Rambler!

I only saw the first half of the game had to watch the little guys. I thought the Loyola QB threw a really pretty ball. I also thought both teams looked dramatically different from their Spring matchup. So much parody this year which is a good thing. Loyola and Mt Carmel and Nazareth will be special next year.
