At this point in time, the jury is still out with respect to Justin Fields. The performance of Nathan Peterman in this game will have no bearing on that matter. On the flip side what if he comes out and puts up better equal or equal passing numbers to Justin Fields? Would that make you doubt the QB of the future?
If Peterman performs well, I will feel good for him after all the difficulties he has experienced so far in his career. I believe Sports Illustrated described him as 'the least successful quarterback of the last decade'. However, a single game is not going to change anyone's opinion of him. He has had ample time to demonstrate he is, at best, a third-string NFL quarterback.
To specifically answer your question, I already have some doubts as to whether or not Justin Fields is the Bears' QB of the future. Consequently, Peterman's performance will not be a determining factor in creating such doubts. With that said, I (with my layman's opinion) have not concluded that Fields is not the QB of the future. I'm willing to give him another year and therefore would not use this year's first draft pick to draft a quarterback. I recognize there is an opportunity cost to such a view, because the Bears can't count on having a top two or three pick in future years. Nonetheless, I don't see a college quarterback out there that is worth a top-three pick and, as previously stated, my mind is not yet made up regarding Justin Fields.
