Bob Monken and Lake Park

Many on this site are aware of the Monken legacy in IHSA, NCAA and NFL football. Bob Monken, one of the originals, is being honored on Friday, October 13, 2023 at 6:30 P.M. at Lake Park High Schools West Campus in Roselle. At that time, the football field will be dedicated in Bob's name to celebrate his thirty years as Lake Park's varsity football coach. Bob was inducted into the Illinois Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1990. The Monken coaching legacy continues as his sons, Tony (Vernon Hills), Todd (Baltimore Ravens), and Ted (Glenbard South) continue the family tradition along with their cousin, Jeff (Army).

I was lucky enough to coach with Bob during his last eighteen years at Lake Park. He took a chance hiring me in 1975; little did he or I know it would lead to my forty-year association with Lake Park football. Please join me in celebrating the accomplishments of my friend and mentor, Bob Monken.

Old School Grass Fields.

As we've seen over the past decade or better many schools have installed field turf that looks really nice with the team logo in the middle and the clearly visible yard lines that hold up and even the heaviest rains.

However there are still some schools that still play in a natural grass field so I thought it would be cool to start a list of schools still going old school on grass. I will start with these schools and if you know any more please add them to the group.

CPL Pick 'EM Friday Afternoon Edition!

Everyone knows the best varsity football is played on Thursdays at 3:30, or Saturday at 9am. The science on this has been settled, or has it? The Friday 3:30 start wants to be invited to the party! Cut out of work early, grab some grub and get to the game! All 3:30(ish) games on the slate this week. On to the picks!

Lincoln Park vs Chicago Academy
Be honest. For as snooty as Chicago Academy sounds, you'd think it would be in Lincoln Park.
Fenger!

South Shore vs Julian
I find South Shore extremely fun to say. Real tongue twister. Not like, "Surely Sylvia swims!” shrieked Sammy surprised. “Someone should show Sylvia some strokes so she shall not sink.” OR "I saw Susie sitting in a shoeshine shop. Where she sits she shines, and where she shines she sits. OR "Six silly sisters sitting sadly sawing six silk sacks." But fun nonetheless..
Seashells!

Crane vs Collins

Alliteration? Come on, this is too easy... Check this one out: "Clean clams crammed in clean cans. New cheese, blue cheese, chew cheese please. A chapped chap chopped chips. A cheeky chimp chucked cheap chocolate chips in the cheap chocolate chip shop!" Cheeky Chimp!?!? Hahahahahahahahaha
Cans of Clams!

Corliss vs Dyett

Fun fact. Corliss is Gaelic for small round hill. Fun fact 2. Dyett (surname) means the son of Dionisia. Pretty sure I heard Dionisia said "no son of mine is going to grow up bad at football." No way a small round hill can compete with that parenting.
Corlisssssss!

Taft vs Amundsen

Look, Friday looks to be the first real fall-type day of the year. Sunny with a bit of a chill in the air. Leaves turning. Pumpkin Spice everywhere. The fine residents of Lincoln Square and Ravenswood taking the opportunity to show off the latest in the fall line of Lululemon while pushing the best in stroller technology. Actually going in to Winnemac stadium for this game on a day like that is a crime against everything I believe in.
Pumpkin Spice!

Western Big Six/TRAC Week 6 and Week 7

I'm back, everyone. Had a rough few weeks at work, but things have quieted down again. (For now!) On with the reviews...

Rock Island 24, UTHS 14 - Throwing two pick-sixes in a game will kill you and that killed UT this week. No more, no less, and good for the Rocks for getting a win.
Quincy 56, Galesburg 19 - This one was 56-5 at half. No shocks here.
Sterling 13, Geneseo 3 - Geneseo was one yard away from a win. Heartbreak for the Leafs, and sweet redemption (and a lifeline) for the Golden Warriors.
This week:
Mendota at Geneseo - Leafs by 60. Mendota is not good, Geneseo is angry.
Quincy at Sterling - The longest drive of the year in the conference. Sterling played well last week, I do not think they can keep it close against the Devils.
Rock Island at Galesburg - There's some reason for joy and optimism in Rock Island, not much in Galesburg. I think the Rocks win by a few scores.
Moline at UTHS - UT could keep this close, but they also lost their chance at the playoffs last week. Moline, off a bye, looks stronger.

EP 35, Orion 34 - BIG upset, and not a good showing from the Chargers, who are now seriously on the outside looking in. EP will now be looking for a possible 3-6 record.
Rockridge 28, Monmouth-Roseville 13 - Perhaps a better performance from the Titans than I expected. Good win from Rockridge, but not what they hoped for.
Morrison 42, Sherrard 14 - No shock here for either team. Neither should be too thrilled or disappointed.
Mendota 35, Riverdale 14 - Riverdale has a loooooooong way to go. Good win, likely the only one of the year, for the Trojans.
Princeton 37, Kewanee 14 - Slightly surprised at the final score, as I thought the Boilers would keep it closer, but I think Princeton is just that good.
Newman 20, Bureau Valley 14 - Very much on brand for the Comets. Tough loss for BV, who now need two wins to get to the playoffs and would have to beat at least one of Princeton and Morrison.
Hall 32, IVC 24 - I expected more out of the Red Devils, playing a winless Grey Ghosts squad. Not a good sign going into the meat grinder part of the schedule.
This week:
EP at Riverdale - I don't think Erie-Prophetstown is very good, but they should be just fine in Port Byron.
Kewanee at Monmouth-Roseville - Sneaky tough game for the Boilermakers. Long-ish drive and not a simple game. I think Kewanee is a favorite but this is an upset alert.
Rockridge at Morrison - Rockridge is winning games but looking rather unimpressive. Morrison is winning games and looking like a real 1A threat. Mustangs should win at home.
Orion at Sherrard - I think Orion is more talented, but they are on a serious skid and don't have much momentum. Both teams need to win out going into the playoffs, and both have viable paths to get there. I think Sherrard is in better shape; I take the Tigers.
Bureau Valley at Princeton - This could've been a cool rivalry if given time, especially if Coach Pistole can keep this team improving. Shame it won't happen any more, most likely. Princeton should be just fine.
Hall at Newman - Newman's offensive struggles really strike me - their high score in regulation for the year is 20 points, achieved in both of their last two games. They should hold down Hall OK, and I think the Comets win, but they do need to find some points as they get into the playoffs where some real juggernauts await.

No place like home?

The thread with real grass got me thinking about another topic:
High schools that play home football games at fields that are not at their school.
Skip the chicago public league on this for obvious reasons:
To start, there is Joliet Catholic.
I don’t know about now, but back in the day Elgin Larkin played all home games at Elgin High and the schools are on opposite sides of a big city.

Week 9 St. Rita vs BR & MC vs Loyola games to be televised

St. Rita vs. Brother Rice will be on The U at 7 p.m. on Oct. 20.

No. 1 Mount Carmel and No. 2 Loyola, both undefeated, appear headed for a major showdown on the final day of the regular season. That game will be broadcast on CW26 at 1 p.m. on Oct. 21.

No. 4 York vs. Lyons will be televised on The U at 1 p.m. on Oct. 14.

My Thoughts for the AP pollsters from the Week 7 polls

Again no one can appreciate the difficulty of doing polls each week than I can.....but unlike you lucky people here who get access and answers to your questions here from me.....the AP pollsters (who remaining pretty low ley) really don't have anyone to answer to in any goven season.

Here are a few observations and questions I have for the various pollsters.

Week 7 Associated Press Class 8A thru Class 1A Top 10 polls

Class 8A?

Huntley-
The Red Raiders are a fine team that plays in a fine conference (just ask the McHenry County cheerleading contingent who I believe are major voters here) but is a win over Class 6A Crystal Lake South (2-4) 54-43 where your defense allowed like a mile and a half in passing yards worthy of vaulting you into the 8A Top 10? No, it's not. Look I agree 8A is really thin right now....but you can do better. Now if Huntley beat up Cary Grove this week.....we'll see.

Minooka- Ok who keeps voting for Minooka in the AP pols and my biggest question is.....and why? I LIVE in the Minooka school district and I have yet to include the Indians in any of my polls this season. They are 4-2, lost to Neuqua Valley (again I know I have no idea how good or bad they are either) and just this past Friday lost to Yorkville.....a Yorkville team who lost to Joliet West and West Aurora already this year? Minooka? Top 10 worthy? Really? Love my Indians but you do not deserve to be 8A ranked.

South Elgin- Everyone bags on the Upstate and bags on SE and GBS...but SE lost to Glenbard South (Class 5A) 14-13 and this was a SE program that had never lost to GBE until last Friday. Look Glenbard South is a pretty strong 5A team here and could make noise this post-season....but as an 8A sized progrsam this is just not a good loss in my opinion and one that would not make me want to give SE any votes in any Top 10 for now.

Belleville East- I won't get uppity up on this one.....let's just say I feel AP and a lot of others might be missing alittle on the BE Lancers right now. It's only loss was to East St Louis 48-0 and that win over Lincoln Way West looks better and better each week. I'm also really looking to see how close BR and Eville is this Friday...and I'm not sayin....but I'm just sayin.

7A

Your cool. No isues here from my end. For now anyways.

6A

Lemont-
Ok I get it Lemont has been a mainstay in 6A and who knows could turn things around and make a decent run in 6A. But the 2023 Lemont team is now 3-3 on the season, has been dealing with a rash of injuries and hasn't beaten a team with a winning record just yet. Again I have high praise for Lemont, Coach Willie and the Boys...but the reality here right now is 3-3. If you are in a Top 10 poll as a 3-3 team you better have lost to three monster teams.

Crete-Monee- I get it Crete is another strong yearly contender and while you might think I'm gonna knock this one....I'm not. I agree right now Crete Monee hasn't done a ton, lost it's first two games and really hasn't beaten anyone of substance (RB? Maybe?) but down the line? Crete and Coach Ko knows what lies ahead especially in Week 9 and I can see the Warriors getting back into upset form. Nicely done whoever voted for CM I like your style.

5A

So wait.....your telling me that right now that accoriding to your poll The Och (Antioch) and Glenbard South are better than St Francis and JCA? K. I disagree heavily but Ok.

Check back for more still a work in progress.

I’m Here!

I had every intention of finally knocking this out tonight for the first time this season. I’m at least a week or two later than I usually start. I’m sure Newt got it right, so we can let that one ride for the week. Maybe I’ll put his work into my format in a separate post.

I was off work on Mondays for 20 years. It was perfect for the Outlook. My wife would be at work, so I’d be home alone all day. I would grab a big coffee, listen to Boers and Bernstein, and wait for the IHSA info to drop. I could usually get it posted before the rest of you got off work.

I’m not off Mondays anymore. And the bigger glitch in the system is the baby boy I have now. 19 months old and relentless. By the time he’s done whipping my ass every day, I’m too tired to log on. I hope he keeps this same energy for football in 7 years, especially since he’s in the 3rd percentile of height and weight.

Beyond those excuses, I have more! Went to Tampa for the miserable Bears two weeks ago. When I returned home Monday night, that had to be family time. Last week, me and wifey found us some Covid for the first time. Rough couple days.

So…. I’m here and I’ll do my thing the rest of the way. Love doing it. But unfortunately it’ll be a late evening post rather than early afternoon.

What did we learn week 6!?!?

Well well well, if it isn’t the 2/3 mark of the regular season. And yet, here we are.

Let’s go…….

1 - That the playoffs are approaching and we have qualifiers and more to come.
2 - That the story at Maine West is a good one - plus the uniform combination just works.
3 - That at some point win 5 will come to Mundelein, but it wasn’t Friday.
4 - That the Lincoln-Ways are still a problem in many ways.
5 - That Lena-Winslow and its dynasty continues.
6 - That Morris looks to be morris of old and that was bad for the new RB.
7 - That it was a classic between Sycamore and Kaneland - as it should be.
8 - That, for one night, Bartlett looked like the Bartlett freshmen or vice versa - discuss.
9 - That this St Francis thing is a thing and will continue to be a thing into November.
10 - That I think someone just scored again in the Huntley - CLS game.

Fun week much more fun ahead.
