"ST. Mary's Coach Ken Turner credited his team getting a bye week last year with helping the Dragons on their way to the Class 3 state championship. This year St. Mary’s (6-2) moved into Class 4 but can still snag a week off, but it’s going to be tough. The Dragons are currently the top seed in the District 2 field with 51.9 points, but Summit (7-1) is right there with 50.9 points. Union (8-0) is third with 47.84 points.

St. Mary’s travels to Lutheran North (5-3), while Summit hosts Parkway West (5-3) on Friday night.

Aiding the Falcons is, win or lose, they will receive 10 bonus points for playing an opponent that’s one class larger than they are as Parkway West competes in Class 5. Aiding St. Mary’s should be Lutheran North’s strength of schedule, which ranks among the best in the area this season. Even if both teams win, the Falcons may be able to leap the Dragons.

It seems like this time of year there’s always new posters (and even some that have been around) that don’t know or understand how qualifiers and classes are determined. Here’s the official process:


For those trying to project ahead of Saturday’s release, make sure you read through that first. As someone who pre-family days had a little more time and would try and “predict” ahead of time, a tip is to use the “Playoff Clinchers and Hopefuls” page instead of the “Playoff Outlook” page. Get to your projected 256 qualifiers first, then divide them into the classes.

Every Monday(-ish), I bracket the 256 playoff teams using the IHSA Playoff Outlook. This is NOT a prediction. These are NOT my opinions. It is simply the most logical way the playoffs would be bracketed, using the IHSA's specific system, if today's standings were the final standings.

Each week I usually have to add/subtract teams to get a true 256. The Outlook doesn't adjust for a conference champion/representative falling below the cutoff. It also rewards forfeit victories before the week that match-up would've been played. I take care of that before proceeding.

The cutoff on the Playoff Outlook is 4-4 with 36 playoff points. 11 teams have that record. 5 of those teams are in the playoffs, and 6 are out. The next tie-breaker used was wins by defeated opponents. Here is the sliver of difference between these teams:

Check the forfeits first. There are several... UGH!
King is 5-4 with a week 9 forfeit win. Change them to 4-4/36/12, and they stay in the field.
Noble/Comer is 6-3 with a week 9 forfeit LOSS. Change them to 6-2/34, and they stay in the field.
Vocational is 4-5 with a week 9 forfeit win. Change them to 3-5/45, and they now MISS the field.
Danville is 6-3 with a week 9 forfeit win. Change them to 5-3/26, and they stay in the field.

Next, let's check to see if every conference has at least one team representing it in the playoff field. Praise Jesus, THEY ALL DO!

All that is left is to find the last team out, and make them the first team in. Bartlett was Team 257 at 4-4/36/7. They are the only team with that record, so we don't need further tie-breakers.

My adjustments.... Bartlett goes into the field, in 8A. Glenbard East moves down to 7A. Eisenhower moves down to 6A. Benet moves down to 5A. Centralia moves down to 4A. Vocational is removed from playoffs, out of 4A

- I'll do 2A and 1A Tuesday night. I went to the Ole Miss game this weekend, and I'm friggin wiped out right now.
- Biggest/smallest Tuesday as well, edited in.

- As for the York besmirchment as an 8A semi-finalist in last week's post... York has to get there. Right now MS, Marist, and GBW all lurk in their quad.

- If the matchups break a little different in 5A, it could be a CCL/ESCC take over in the Upper Bracket. 7 of the 8 teams in R2 could be Catholic schools

- Sterling went south in 5A also. The dividing line came way north this week. Seemed to be a decision between Sterling and Benet.
- I chose to keep Benet north with close neighbors GBS and several conference rivals. Who knows what the IHSA will do. Heck, Benet might end up in 6A.

- Noble/Comer is forfeiting this week, but playoff eligible. Why the forfeit? Will they play in the playoffs?
- If Noble/Comer is done, Ag Science gets in.

Each year, there are a certain number of teams that enter the playoffs undefeated. There are even fewer that finish their seasons undefeated. For example, last year 23 teams entered the playoffs undefeated and 4 of those teams won the state title.

The data for last year is:

2A - 7 undefeated, winner undefeated (Wilmington)
3A - 4 undefeated, winner undefeated (Byron)
4A - 2 undefeated, winner undefeated (Joliet Catholic)

Moline 33, Sterling 21 - Great game and a worthy title decider. Sterling will make some noise in the playoffs, but if Moline can clean up their penalties and consistently make extra points they have a good shot at a real run.
Geneseo 36, Rock Island 22 - Every bit as important as the game above and well done to the Leafs to fight through some adversity. Must feel great to get the monkey off their backs and put it on Rocky.
Galesburg 46, UTHS 35 - What a shootout this was, and what a nice feeling for Galesburg, who will likely be able to get to 3-6. Meantime, this is the pits for the Panthers, who had hopes to make the playoffs this season and now look likely to finish at 1-8.
Quincy 65, Alleman 13 - Alleman actually had a lead this game!... Didn't last long.
I was 2-2 (missed on Geneseo and Galesburg).
This week:
Moline over Geneseo - Geneseo is good and playing well. Moline is rolling.
Galesburg over Alleman - The Streaks will have a two-game win streak (cymbal crash) to end the year.
Quincy over Rock Island - Rock Island is playing for its playoff life, but I don't know that they have the speed or physicality to match up with Quincy (and they'd need one or the other). Quincy itself has quite a bit to play for, as they could host a playoff game with a win. Would be very nice for them to potentially avoid East St. Louis.
Sterling over UT - I expect Sterling to be snorting mad and take out some anger on the Panthers, while the Warriors will be hoping to bring someone from the Chicago suburbs over to western Illinois.

TRAC
Monmouth-Roseville 28, Erie/Prophetstown 6 - Nice win for the Titans to clear up a playoff berth in a year that has been somewhat disappointing. Meanwhile, this has set up EP for a do-or-die.
Morrison 56, LeRoy 7 - Awesome performance by the Mustangs, who look like they're fired up for a run toward the second season.
Orion 53, Sherrard 7 - That's more like it for the Chargers, who seem to know what's coming to them. Tough way to end the season for Sherrard, who have shown a lot of promise.
Rockridge 42, Kewanee 14 - A return to form of sorts for Rockridge, who had been looking a little sluggish in my opinion.
Princeton 48, Bureau Valley 0 - Exactly what we expected from both teams; if anything, a little underwhelming from the Tigers.
Newman 30, Mendota 27 - Newman discovered their offense! What a great game, and what a heartbreak for the Trojans, but no shame in this loss in Sterling.
Hall 42, St. Bede 27 - It's a long season and it looks like it's getting to St. Bede. But what a wonderful win for Hall, who look like favorites to make the playoffs after a 1-8 finish last year.
I was 5-2 (missed on MR and Hall).
This week:
Rockridge over Orion - Not necessarily as much of a given as we might think, but Rockridge seems too good for Orion.
Ottawa Marquette over Sherrard - Rough way to end up for Sherrard, but I think Marquette will sweep in and beat the Tigers.
Morrison over Erie/Prophetstown - I think EP is, in a vacuum, a better team than Morrison. But momentum means a lot in high school football, and at home and coming off a win, I think Morrison wins this play-in game.
Princeton over Monmouth-Roseville - Upset alert for the unbeaten Tigers, who make a long trip to Monmouth, but they're just so stinking good!
Newman over Kewanee - Not a blowout by any means but I think Newman is better than Kewanee.
Hall over Bureau Valley - Good lord, are the Red Devils feeling happy, and I think they will get in this week. Good for them.
St. Bede over Mendota - Upset alert here too... this game will go a long way in telling us how the Bruins will do in the playoffs.

Week 8 brings us to another interconference week pitting the Purple at the Blue, the Green at the Orange and the Red at the White.

The Green at Orange presents us with the most competitive games on the slate.

St. Rita travels to the Emerald Isle to take on the rejuvenated Providence Celtic program in the Augustinian Bowl. With Simeon and Morgan Park rescheduling their game to Saturday, this game has become the WCIU Game of the Week. Can Coach Plantz' Celtics stop the Mustangs running attack and can Providence move the ball consistently against an improved and always hard-hitting St. Rita Defense. It'll be interesting to see how the Mustangs fare against the first team that can match their size since Week 3 while doing it at a difficult road venue. This game will be a good gauge to see where both teams are at heading towards the postseason.

4-3 Benet travels to Joliet Catholic and 3-4 Nazareth heads to Montini. Nazareth and Benet will square off in week 9 for a playoff spot if the Redwings can't upset the Hilltoppers on the road and the Roadrunners pass their test this week vs the Broncos.

Rock will try to recapture the pick'em lead from McCar while fending off pjjp, ignazio and a host of other esteemed prognosticators in the eleven games this weekend.

What was the approximate year when things were as good as it got in Illinois high school football?

Varsity, Sophomore, Freshman A and B games. No ref shortage. Great newspaper coverage. Games on TV perhaps. Friday night call in shows. No transfers. Anything I’m missing?

With the playoffs coming being the biggest fan of Illinois High School Football I want to always thank & remember the above mentioned newspapers.When I moved from Illinois in late 89 I made sure I had paid in advance for The Star,Reporter & a few other papers that covered Illinois ball.My grandpa would send me the sports from the Sat & Sun Joliet News Herald & Daily Journal Kankakee.My Uncle & Aunt would send me the Southtown Sports from the weekend & cut out schedules & scores from the Trib & Sun Times to keep up with the Prep Bowl.Well playoff pairings night I’d make sure I was at work & this was before the internet.But the Journal Star would fax me the pairings every year as soon as the pairings were done & I’ll never forget that.The Pantagraph would fax all the scores to me after the games were completed.I’ll never forget that kindness

The playoffs are on the horizon, and 9 of the 14 WSC teams have aspirations of playing Halloween Weekend. The WSC Week 7 Marquee Matchup will be played on Saturday at Ducheon Field as Downers Grove North travels to Glenbard West. DGN is coming off their first win over Hinsdale Central in 14 years, and Glenbard West is coming off their first loss of the season to York. As you may recall, both GW and DGN had their chances to beat York.

Other interesting games with playoff implications - Willowbrook vs. Hinsdale South, Downers Grove South vs. Addison Trail, and Hinsdale Central vs. York. As for our prediction game, I foresee several 100% board picks this week. That may not be great for movement in the standings.

Anyone have good rational why the CCIW schools aren’t playing this spring? I’ve heard a lot of “we’re focused on the health of the kids and the 2021 fall season.”

What does that even mean? All D1’s played and it went well. All local NAIA’s are currently playing and so are all IHSA members.

Aurora University is playing 5 games this spring and they don’t count towards eligibility.

Seems like the kids are missing out and not getting to play 5 games. what am I missing?

They are now 3-3

Week 8 in the WSC has 1 division with a known champion (Congratulations to York on securing at least a share of the WSS title), while the other will likely come down to Week 9, as both DGS and Willowbrook sit at 4-3. With this weeks games, and looking forward to Wk9, a DGS win will give them at least a share of the WSG title.

Lyons at Glenbard West is definitely the marquee game this week. Both sitting at 6-1, therefore will be in the playoffs - yet both still have an outside shot at a shared WSS title. Whoever wins this week will need York to slip this week or next in order to grab a share.

DGN is likely in the 7A playoffs with 5 wins, but a win this week over OPRF will ensure their postseason participation. Conversely, OPRF is still fighting for a chance. With York on the horizon in Wk 9, OPRFs best shot at getting to 5 wins is this week.

And then there is Hinsdale Central... sitting at 3-4, HC needs to win both Wk 8 and 9 to get in. IF they can avoid injuries this week (which they have been able to do since week 2), they may be able to bring GW a game with everything on the line.

Wk7 had a few changes in the overall standings - Panthers able to make a move into a tie for 1st. With 2 weeks left in the regular season, nobody has ran away with the game.
