I would have Palatine and Plainfield North in the top ten of 8A; dropping Edwardsville and South Elgin out.

Pekin is ranked too high in 7A. They are having a nice season but essentially play in a 5A conference.

East St. Louis will have a cake walk in the 6A playoffs as Simeon is the only team that might stay within 20 points of them.

Bismarck-Henning seems to be ranked too high in 2A.

There are many good teams in 1A, but Lena-Winslow is so good that they have to be the second best bet for a state championship behind East St. Louis. Mt. Carmel in 7A is probably the third best bet.

Outside of the 8A playoffs (which are almost always spectacular) you have to look at that 4A bracket and think that is going to be one heck of a tourney. The top 5 in 4A could all be considered the favorite. So many good teams. R-B beat a solid 5A team in Morris. Sparta gave Sterling their only loss. SHG, JCA, and Rochester have amazing championship pedigrees. Can’t wait!!!

Anyone know why Morgan Park is ranked 5th in 5 A never seen them ranked before. Does anyone know if rhey deserve that ranking,

Full disclosure…I know nothing about this Morgan Park team.
But I don’t think it’s odd for someone to ask if they deserve to be considered the No. 5 team in their class in the state. (I would guess the upcoming game vs. Simeon will explain a lot.)
But to try support the original question, I would that many of us hold the chicago Public League in light regard, based solely on playoff history.
The league teams with the most positive press over recent years have been Phillips and Simeon.
Morgan Park is 1-9 in its last 9 playoff games, with the closest loss being by 23 points.
Morgan Park is recognized probably state wide as a boys basketball powerhouse, along with Simeon and Young. It has yet to establish itself on a consistent basis as a title contender in its class.
I assume if a team is ranked fifth in the state in its class, that no one would feint if it reached the playoff semifinals.
So at this point, it’s not shocking to me that someone is inquiring about the Green/Gold’s presence in the five spot of the state rankings.

Correct me if I am wrong but no team in that top ten has won state recently nor do they have a ton of playoff success. So out of all 10 teams, why the question of MP only?
Also in your own post you acknowledge that the CPL typically have two teams that represent well. This year its Simeon and MP. Before Phillips, it was Morgan Park.

Thank you, It is rare to see a CPL team ranked other than Phillips and I don’t know much about them other than seeing they have played and blown out other CPL teams.

This doesn't have to be a big on going discussion, I simply didn’t know much about Morgan Park and have never seen them ranked, the other teams in 5A are pretty much ranked every year and have a lot of playoff experience, maybe not State Championships so much but playoff experience on a regular basis, this is why Morgan Park stood out to me. I’m not saying they don’t deserve it, that’s why I asked.

The CPS craves a State trophy for football very much. Phillips was aloud to be the favor of the month for several years with transfers. The former Phillips coach did a good job of getting kids off of private high school rosters. Before Phillips Simeon was the favored school and before that it was Hubbard High School. During that time Morgan Park almost always put a quality team on the field. I can't remember when they were not a top tier CPS program. This weekend Morgan Park is playing Simeon. It should be a hard-fought game. If you blink you will miss two plays.

As someone pointed out a few days ago, Collinsville has never won a playoff game (over 100+ years) and i dont recall seeing anyone ask if they deserved their top 10 ranking last year.

From 1a to 8a, the rankings are littered with teams who have very little history of being a consistent title contender. To question if MP "deserves" its ranking, while all the other teams are getting praised for a great season seems odd.

You are really reaching here .

My response was to the other poster. If you were simply inquiring about the team there is no issue. If someone is challenging why they are ranked, the additional responses are legit as well. There is nothing wrong with a little discussion on a message board.

I am not reaching at all. MP is having a great season. As are several other programs. Why cant they just be applauded for a great year like the other schools instead of questioning whether they deserve it.

Because this is a high school football forum. Half the posts on here involve questioning how good teams are. People question teams rankings all season long on this board. I don't see you having an issue with that.

I questioned it because they havint played anyone but CPL teams , this is no disrespect to Morgan Park or any other CPL teams, hell, Sterling got beat by Phillips in the semis a few years back which is a CPL team. but in general most CPL teams that make the playoffs get running clocked in the first round.

That's factually incorrect. While not what they normally are, Morgan Park played Richards and Rich Township, an 8A school that will probably finish 5-4, in their two non league games. I'm sure Morgan Park wasn't expecting a down year for Richards when they scheduled them.

The Mustangs had quite a run in the from 2001 to 2009, including reaching the Class 7A state semis. This is pretty impressive for a CPS school especially in 7A.
2001-Class 7A second round
2002-Class 7A second round
2003-Class 7A quarterfinals
2004-Class 7A state semifinals (lost 21-14 to Cary-Grove)
2006-Class 7A quarterfinals (lost 20-0 to eventual state champion St. Rita)
2007-Class 7A quarterfinals (lost 24-0 to state runner-up Wheaton-Warrenville South)
2008-Class 6A second round
2009-Class 6a second round

Some of their playoff victories included wins over elite programs like East St. Louis, Glenbard West and Batavia.

Morgan Park isn't your typical CPS program and its returning to the success they had 10-20 years ago. People can down play them all they want, but that's a legit team stacked with young talent.

That is great info, and exactly the info I was wanting! Thank you
I just had never remembered a CPL school being ranked other than Phillips

Raby made the 4A semifinals in 2017 but seems to have fallen off since then.
Also, Simeon made the 8A semifinals in 2014. Although it is true many Chicago public schools experience blowout losses in the first round of the state playoffs, usually the top two or three teams each year are competitive. This year they are Simeon, Morgan Park and Kenwood.
