2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

Byron 7 on 7

Impact Player for Byron:

Year in and year out Byron veteran head coach Jeff Boyer has a state title contending program and don't expect that to change in 2023. The Tigers have several experienced starters back and keep an eye on junior RB/SS Ashton Henkel. Henkel is a two way impact starter for the Tigers whop will again be asked to provide production and leadership on both sides of the football this coming fall.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Byron Tigers: Byron was able to make another deep post-season run in 2022, losing to eventual Class 3A state champion ICCP in the semifinal round. Look for the Tigers to again reload and be a big factor in the Class 3A state playoff field along with the Big Northern conference. Byron had a very young team in 2022 and this team will be battle tested and more than capable of making yet another deep post-season run. Also keep an eye on freshman RB/LB Caden Considine, son of former standout Byron/Iowa and NFL player and now Byron assistant coach Sean Considine

7/26- @ Antioch for 7 on 7

Impact Player for Antioch:

Antioch senior RB Nick Day has been a varsity starter and a key impact player for the past few seasons. Day has gotten bigger, stronger while also possessing some seriously impressive inside and outside running ability. Day has very good field vision, is a strong and physical back who is built to carry a big part of the offensive production and should be primed for a big senior season in 2023. Overall this kid has some real game.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Antioch Sequoits:

Antioch and veteran head coach Brian Glashagel has continued to move the Sequoits program forward and they continue to be a regular in the IHSA state playoff field along with being a Northern Lake County conference title contender. The Sequoits no question will need to do a bit of reloading this summer and will need to replace 14 graduated starters (7 offense 7 defense) but this program always has decent depth and good overall talent. Despite the questions heading into the 2023 season, I'm looking for Antioch to again be near the very top of the NLCC race and to again make it to the IHSA state playoff field in 2023. I'll say The Och winds up as a 7-2/6-3 regular season record this fall.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

Summer Practices and camp @ St. Norbert College

Impact Player for St. Viator

St. Viator played several key underclassmen names in 2022 and welcome back several names who will be multiple year varsity starters in 2023. Keep an eye on junior OL Ben Konopka (6-foot-2, 270 pounds) who has strong bloodlines (father played at Northwestern) and who also has a non stop motor. Also 2025 QB Cooper Kmet (6-foot-2, 180 pounds) also has obvious bloodlines (older brother is Chicago Bears TE Cole Kmet) who has continued to grow and develop into a top level signal caller.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 St. Viator Lions :

Life is never easy for anyone that plays in the rugged CCL/ESCC conference and that also goes for St. Viator. The Lions in 2022 needed a Week 9 win over St. Patrick to get into the Class 5A state playoff field. The Lions lost in Class 5A opening round action to Sterling to finish the 2022 season. The 2023 Lions you ask? Again St Viator welcomes back a nice core of returning starters and some impact names. The Lions 2023 season schedule is again stacked and expect several very close games all season long but I see this Viator team again having a real shot at returning to the IHSA state playoffs in 2023 and becoming say a 5-4/6-3 caliber team this fall.

The Lions will no question look for several contributions from it's underclassmen group to fill up and compete for 14 spots that graduated this past spring. A big key will be can the Lions reload at a handful of key positions this summer (DL/OL/DB) sooner rather than later this summer.

NCAA to allow unlimited official visits

Linked is an interesting take to the NCAA now allowing kids to take unlimited official visits. In a lot of ways I agree with some of the initial reactions but the one aspect that I feel is a positive here is that many families end up making several unofficial visits on their own dime.....it gets very costly for those same families and hopefully this will allow those kids and parents some relief. Please feel free to discuss.

Update: Cahokia 2025 DT Jason Dowell talks spring/summer plans

Cahokia (Ill.) sophomore four star ranked defensive tackle recruit Jason Dowell (6-foot-3, 275 pounds) checked in late last week and here is the latest on his recruiting process, spring and summer plans here.

"I'm in the middle of my baseball season right now so baseball has been keeping me busy. It's made it harder for me to get out this spring to visit some schools. I'm still looking at getting out to visit both Northwestern and Iowa this spring and if not the spring then maybe this summer I'll visit. I'm all set to visit Notre Dame on April 22nd for it's spring game. One school I'm definitely planning to go and visit and camp with this summer is Ohio State. I know my coaches at school havebeen in touch with some of the Ohio State coaches and we are4 looking at dates when I can visit and camp with them in June."

Dowell is also gearing up for what is expected to be a big spring evaluation period.

"I know that a lot of the colleges I speak with have said they are planning to be back in school over the next few weeks to watch out tram workouts. We had a decent amount of college coaches in school back in January and we are expecting even more colleges this spring. We start our football team camp in June and I'll be all ready to go for the summer team camp."

Jason Dowell has multiple scholarship offers.

EDGY's Take on Jason Dowell: Dowell was easily one of the most advanced names I saw live in the Class of 2025 and just his frame, physical tools along with his potential to continue to get bigger and stronger over the next year. Dowell is also a kid who's well mature beyond his years off the field and is a kid with just a terrific overall personality. Dowell so far has added some impressive early offers....but in many ways I feel Dowell will still be able to get a major burst this spring and early sumner with his recruiting stock. I'm very surprised to see several Big Ten schools along with several other Power 5 schools who recruit this state not having offered Dowell just yet. Rivals has Jason Dowell as a 4 star name in the Class of 2025 and I fully agree that this kid is a monster player and recruit to watch down the line.

Impact Player for Dundee-Crown

Dundee Crown senior WR/DB Kali Freeman (6-foot-0, 185 pounds) is a key two way starter and leader for the Chargers over the past few seasons. Freeman is a very capable receiver who has very good hands and ball skills. Freeman is also a plus defender for the Chargers who is strong in both pass coverage along with in run support. Look for Freeman to draw increased recruiting looks and attention this spring and summer.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Dundee Crown Chargers :

Dundee Crown and head coach Mike Steinhaus is an alum of the school who has been able to get this Chargers program playing much better and much more consistent football in his tenure. No question Dundee-Crown still has a ways to go to develop into a power in the always strong Fox Valley Conference....a task that is much harder than people might expect. Yet this team and program is always well coached, presents a bit of a change offensively compared to the rest of the generally run heavy FVC and is always pretty competitive even in last season's 2-7 overall record.

With 12 returning starters back in the fold for the 2023 season, I can see the Chargers wind up as say a possible 4-5 type of team this fall. Winning early in the season is no question a major key for DC as the schedule to close out the regular season is stacked taking on Prairie Ridge, @ Huntley and @ Cary Grove to close out the regular season slate.

Impact Player for Charleston

Charleston will welcome back several returning starters back from it's 2022 4-5 season and a roster that features plenty of talent and experience. Senior WR/DNB Langdon King (6-foot-43. 185 pounds) is a talented multi-sport and multi-positional athlete who will be asked to again step up and play several positions this fall. King has good size and length and will no question draw more recruiting looks this spring and summer.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Charleston Trojans :

Charleston welcomes back one of it's own in new/old head coach Brian Halsey, who is an alum of Charleston and who also has been a long time head coach for Charleston who again is taking over the football program for former head coach Jerry Payne. The Trojans will look towards Halsey to take a team that lost it's first five regular season games before finishing with a 4-5 record. The 2023 roster as mentioned has experience back this summer along with some talent and look for Charleston to have a shot at making some noise in the Apollo conference in 2023. Brian Halsey has won before at Charleston and know what it will take to get this program back to winning games and winning seasons.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

Team Camp at SIUC
Various 7 on 7 matchups this summer

Impact Player for Collinsville

Collinsville made the IHSA state playoff field in back to back seasons for the first time 2021 and 2022 for the first time in school history. Can the Kahoks made it back to back to back in 2023? Collinsville will rely on a deep senior class this fall and the offense is led by senior QB Ethan Bagwell. Bagwell is a big strong kid listed at 6-foot-3, 230 pounds who is a threat with both his arm and legs for the Kahoks. The Collinsville defense will look towards junior DE Devin Habermehl (6-foot-1, 220 pounds) who was an impact player last season and who will have two more varsity seasons to play.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Collinsville Kahoks:

Collinsville a handful of years ago made the somewhat controversial decision to leave the Southwestern Conference and instead strike out on it's own as an independent....and from at least a football standpoint playing as an Indy has been a success. The Kahoks have been able to maintain a solid schedule, limit the amount of travel most independent teams need to take on without playing in a conference and post winning seasons and make the IHSA state playoffs. The schedule for Collinsville is again solid but this is a program that will again battle all comers.

While the Kahoks no question have some questions and spots to reload at this summer (offensive line/defensive line) look for head coach Colton Rhodes to keep this program winning games. I can see Collinsville post say a 7-2/6-3 record and get back into the IHSA state playoff field.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

Impact Player for Taft:

Taft has a really strong core of offensive skills players to watch for the 2023 season. Senior WR/RB/DB Jayden Harris is a player that basically never leaves the field for the Eagles and his versatility and athletic ability is a big plus for Taft in 2023. I also like a few others here including junior RB Jaiden Padilla, junior RB Stephen Carrera and senior DE Chris Roszak will all be asked to provide production and leadership this fall for Taft.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Taft Eagles:

Chicago Taft, led by head coach Zach Elder had a down season in 2022 (3-6 overall record) but this program has been one of the better larger enrollment CPL programs and I don't anticipate the Eagles being down for very long. Taft welcomes back a nice core of experienced starters on both sides of the football for 2023 including some key names in the offensive skills department. If the Eagles can reload in a few key spots (offensive line/defensive line) look for Taft to once again return to the IHSA state playoff field in 2023.

I can see Taft getting back to winning football in 2023 however....the non conference portion of the schedule is tough with both Crown Point Indiana (led by former HF HC Craig Buzea) and also Stevenson. Get past the non conference games and the Eagles pretty much have a pretty winnable remaining schedule (minus a loaded Kenwood team) and should wind up as say a 6-3 team in 2023.

Impact Player for Brother Rice:

I can take this a few different ways and I can also point towards an impact player on each side of the football as well. On the offensive side of the football, the offensive line will be a strength in 2023 and senior OT Conor Kenzinger has all the makings of a player who is in line for a huge senior season this fall. Kenzinger has played offensive tackle for just one season so he's trying to close the experience gap quickly this off season. Defensively, junior LB Christian Pierce is already a Power 5 recruit who has the chance to become a monster game charger type over the next few seasons for the Crusaders.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Brother Rice Crusaders: Brother Rice and forst year head coach Casey Quedenfeld was able to get a very green and less experienced team in 2023 to develop and improve each week, and got the Crusaders into the Class 7A state playoff field and ended the season losing to eventual state champion and CCL Blue rival Mount Carmel.

I'm looking for Brother Rice to take more additional positive steps this fall as the Crusaders will rely on a very good and experienced offense while also looking to reload a bit on the defensive wide of the football. The overall talent level is never in short supply at Rice and I can see this Crusaders team having a much better run in the regular season and beyond this fall.

Update: Bolingbrook 2025 QB Jonas Williams has spring/summer plans

Bolingbrook (Ill.) 2026 dual threat quarterback recruit Jonas Williams (6-foot-3, 180 pounds) checked in and updated me late last week on his upcoming spring and summer plans along with his latest recruiting news.

"My latest offer came from Michigan and that was really exciting," Williams said. "I'm pretty much done now with my spring visits and a lot of the college coaches have reached out to my head coach (Titcus Pettigrew) and will be making in school visits starting in a week or so to watch me throw in person. I'm also going to take part in the Under Armour camp soon in Kansas City."

Williams has also spent this spring training and getting ready for the spring. summer then his 2023 sophomore season for Bolingbrook.

"I'm still going to Throw It Deep pretty regularly on Saturday's along with throwing during the week with my receivers at school."

Williams also previewed his upcoming 2023 sophomore season and what we can expect from him this coming season.

"Next season I'm going to have much more of a running threat in my game compared top last year. I'm working on my overall speed and I want to be just a much more mobile quarterback. I've ben also working hard in the weight room and getting bigger and stronger. I will also have much better chemistry with my receivers compared to last year."

Williams is also enjoying his first season of playing 7on7 for Boom Midwest this spring.

"Boom has been a lot of fun and it's definitely a different game but I'm still having fun and enjoying it. I'm definitely glad I decided to play 7on7."

So how has Williams been able to manage the increased pressures of being one of the top sought after quarterback names in the Class of 2026?

"I basically will shut off social media and just get away from it all from time to time. I really enjoy just going to work out, putting on my headphone and just6 turning everything out. That's my way of dealing with all of it but it' also a blessing to be able to have the offers and attention I've received."

Jonas Williams has multiple scholarship offers.

EDGY's Take on Jonas Williams: Jonas Williams had an eye opening 2022 freshman season starting for the Raiders and has become one of the most sought after names in the Class of 2026. Williams already has several Power 5 offers and I fully expect more and more to follow once the college coaches begin arriving at Bolingbrook over the next week or two. I see Williams becoming a highly ranked name (I see Jonas Williams as a mid to high 4 star ranking to start) in the Class of 2026 and for Williams to develop into a Power 5 level name. Also of note....with the recent coaching change at Bolingbrook I've seen/heard a lot of speculation on whether Williams will remain at Bolingbrook or if he will wind up eventually at another school. I've talked to Jonas multiple times since last summer and he's more than aware of the talk of transfer....but as of now I feel he's still on board with Bolingbrook. Can that change? No question and I feel Williams could be a target for say an IMG Academy type of option for him....here is hoping Jonas Williams will continue to allow us all to enjoy watching his development for the next three seasons.

So which IHSA Football teams are truly ready for a major breakout for 2023?

Major here meaning teams who could go from a losing record or a .500 caliber program to a potential state contender

A few teams come to mind in my mind....

Kenwood- The Broncos welcome back some real talent including 4 star ranked DE Marquise Lightfoot and are also adding some big names via transfer including former Bolingbrook WR IMarion Stewart. If the Broncos can reload a bit upfront on the offensive line they have a ton of skills.

Downers Grove North- We saw how the Trojans played a ton of close games and ended up 6-3 then beat Lincoln Park before getting eliminated by Mount Carmel in a close game. Lots of talent back for 2023 and can the Silver fall back a little bit at the top create an opening for DGN in 2023?

Lockport- Finished the season at 5-4 then lost in 8A round 1 to GB West....the Porters still have a ton of talent in the program and welcome back several returning starters from the 2022 season.

Homewood Floosmoor- The Vikings also have a ton of skills and talent back in 2023 and this is a program that is always capable of big things at times.

Who else should be listed here? Post em now.
