Class of 2024: 10 Undervalued Names to Watch Defense

So just wanted to break down some kids who might not have a ton of early offers so far but who could wind up being a nice addition to programs. I can see several of these names being able to draw early offers sooner rather than later......have a few of your own? By all means let me know who they are.

Class of 2024 10 Undervalued Names to Watch Offense: (in no particular order):

Class of 2024 10 Undervalued Names to Watch Defense (in no particular order):

OLB/S Gary Rutherford Peoria 6-foot-3, 200 pounds- Love this kids overall motor, length, physical ability and his overall upside for the higher college level. Rutherford, who has just recently started to draw more recruiting interest and a handful of offers from in-state FCS ISU and WIU....yet I truly feel Rutherford is way under valued. Rutherford has impressive speed and also great closing speed, I love his overall football IQ and he has the ability yo play corner, safety or outside linebacker at the high college level. In my eyes Rutherford has high D1 tools and upside and sooner rather than later schools will figure that out as well.

-
LB Grady Catanzano Prospect 6-foot-1, 230 pounds - Grady is just a terrific overall player who has some real upside to play at the next level and he was impressive in 2022 on a few different levels. Catanzano is strictly an inside linebacker type who makes very good reads and seems very instinctive at all times. I like how well Grady plays the run, can and will go sideline to sideline and is also a HEAVY hitter and a strong closer. Catanzano no question will need to run this spring and summer for college coaches and if that goes well his stock could get a big time boost. I remember guys named Edwards and Sanborn who not too long ago has similar questions from college coaches about their game....and it worked out fine for those guys.

DE Carlos Hazelwood Tinley Park 6-foot-5, 260 pounds Hazelwood is a big, physical and athletic player who is still somewhat raw and a player who hasn't played a ton of football so far. Yet Hazelwood has eye opening length and physical tools who no question will get bigger and much stronger down the line. Hazelwood this off-season is working with former Michigan State/NFL DL Demetrius Cooper and Coach Tristan Stovall who have worked with and have gotten several raw kids with upside playing at the very high college level. Hazelwood still has a lot of work to do but I love his overall potential here.

DL Maverick Ohle Naperville Central 6-foot-2, 230 pounds Maverick is a weight room monster who is always getting bigger and stronger and he won't be outworked. Ohle played a little bit of tackle and end last season and did well at both spots. Ohle's speed and quickness is noticeable along with his technique and ability to just get to the football and finish off his tackles. From a recruiting perspective the biggest question I see here is what position? Does he have the ability to stay inside at the higher level or does he get moved to defensive end? Can he play say nose? His overall size makes him a bit of a tweener positionally, and this spring and summer will be huge for Ohle's overall recruiting stock. I can see this kid really benefit from padded camps this summer.

DB Dev'ion Reynolds Carmel Catholic 6-foot-2, 175 pounds Reynolds caught my attention at a camp last year and was one of a handful of underclassmen defensive backs and skill kids from Carmel who opened up some eyes. Reynolds has the size and length to play safety yet also has the quickness and cover skills to play as a big corner as well. His ability to read and react to the football is impressive along with having just a very natural and fluid back peddle while also being able to change speeds and get up to full speed in a few quick steps. Reynolds has the physical tools and attributes that should be getting much close looks this early spring from high level schools.

DB Harlan May Carmel Catholic 6-foot-1, 180 pounds May was another name at the Underclassmen Showcase camp who just was able to make play after play against older varsity players. May is a very physical corner who shines in run support and a a plus tackler and finisher in my eyes. I also was impressed with May's cover skills in one on ones along with his overall instincts and reads.....I seldom saw May get beat and/or find himself out of position. May also has good size and length plus very good overall speed.

DL Nick Cairo Lake Park 6-foot-3, 260 pounds Cairo hails from a program in Lake Park that unfortinately just doesn't seem to get a lot of shine, but the Lancers program always has a handful of kids who can play. Nick Cairo's film was impressive. He plays both ways and he's vert capable on either side of the football....yet in my opinion he sines on defense. Cairo has impressive feet and quickness and just seems at times to explode out his stance. Cairo has really good hands and strength, causes havoc with his speed and quickness and once he gets to the football knows how to lay the wood. Cairo has really good size and I feel his home will be on the interior defensive line in college. Ialso couldn't help but notice his hustle on literally every play and this is a kid who's motor truly runs 100 percent at all times. I'm very interested to see how Cairo does this summer in pads and he has a real chance at boosting his recruiting stock no question.

DL Tavon Rice Chicago Mount Carmel 6-foot-0, 275 pounds It seems like I've been watching Ravon Rice for ever....and Rice is a multi-year starter for the state champion Caravan who has been a mainstay on the defensive line. Rice is a bit undersized at the high level of football, but his overall strength, bend, understanding of low Man wins and his impressive overall motor will no question get some colleges looking harder at him this spring and summer. Rice also hustles at all times, always seems to find a way to the football and makes plays.

DB Dajhir Gordon Warren Township 5-foot-9, 150 pounds- Year in and tear out Warren Township just always seems to have tremendous defensive backs and they have another one in Dajhir Gordon. Gordon. listed at 5-foot-9, 150 pounds doesn't have ideal D1 type of pedigree, but his overall game is no question very high level. Gordon is a high twitch athlete with impressive quickness, burst and explosiveness. Yet the fun really begins watching Gordon in coverage. Gordon can run with anyone, has very good overall instincts and will outfight all comers for the football in traffic. Gordon is also a big time hitter and finisher who brings some swagger and attitude to his game on the field. Again I'm not sure where Gordon winds up from a school/level standpoint...byt all I know he's a baller and more schools better put the video on one more time.

OLB/S Peace Bumba St. Thomas More 6-foot-1, 190 pounds Peace Bumba plays for 8 Man downstate St Thomas More, so he's already fighting just getting noticed by schools> I've seen Bumba a handful of times and he has a ton to offer schools on either side of the football. Bumba has impressive higher level overall physical tools , can play any number of positions on both sides of the football and his game will just continue to get better and better. I feel Bumba will end up playing as an outside backer because of his size and frame (which still has room to grow and I can see him getting to say 210 pounds in college) while also keeping his very good overall speed and quickness. I definitely get the fact that college coaches will want to see Bumba in camps this summer and in pads....and from my experience Peace Bumba will do just fine in testing and live drills in pads. Has a chance to really become a nice sleeper type for sure.

Class of 2024: 10 Undervalued Names to Watch Offense

So just wanted to break down some kids who might not have a ton of early offers so far but who could wind up being a nice addition to programs. I can see several of these names being able to draw early offers sooner rather than later......have a few of your own? BY al means let me know who they are.

Class of 2024 10 Undervalued Names to Watch Offense: (in no particular order):

Wide Receivers

Kaneland 2024 WR Aric Johnson
- Johnson, who is already ranked as a three star receiver by Rivals is a big and physical player who just looks the part and who's game has continued to develop. Johnson has yet to draw any scholarship offers for now....but once schools get a chance to see Johnson this in person this spring I would not be stunned to see his recruiting stock rise.

Mount Carmel 2024 Darion Gilliam 6-foot-5, 190 pounds)- Gilliam, who just added his his first offer on Tuesday from Kent State is a tall, long and athletic big man who I have felt for over a year has the frame/size and length to develop into a higher level TE type at the college level. Gilliam has impressive hands and ball skills and I'm still pretty surprised that he's still just holding one offer so far this early spring.

Running Back

St Rita RB DJ Stewart
- DJ had a very good second half of the 2022 season for the Mustangs as a truly a big back who has better than you think speed who also runs with a tremendous power and strength. Once Stewart gets going he's a load and a half to stop and I feel he could be a fit in the right offense at the college level. Stewart at 6-foot-0, 230 plus pounds I'm sure is a name that colleges want to see run in person this spring...but his game is legit and hopefully he can find a good fit and the right system/school this spring and summer.

Chicago Kenwood RB Ethan Middleton-Middleton has gone from St Rita to Morgan Park briefly then to Kenwood in less than a semester. Middleton, who is claiming an early offer from Penn State hasn't added any other offers yet. Look for more schools to look harder at him this summer and fall. Middleton has high level athletic tools and big time ability, but also has work to do in the class room before really seeing his recruiting stock take off. If he can get things in order he has Power 5 ability and potential.

Quarterback

Lincoln Way West QB Cole Crafton-
Crafton might be one of the top overall athletes in the State of Illinois. Crafton, who is also a high level baseball prospect who is already verbally committed to Louisville for baseball has yet to add an offer for football....however multiple Power 5 and Group of 5 schools continue to monitor Crafton closely and expect a large crowd of college football coaches to watch him throw this spring. If Crafton decides it's football for him I can see several schools become immediately more interested in him.

QB AJ Palicki Willowbrook- The Class of 2024 in Illinois has several quality quarterback who cone in all shapes and sizes...yet you'll be hard pressed to find a kid with better size, strength and physical makeup than Arthur John Palicki. Palicki (6-foot-4, 210 pounds) who has an early offer from Northern Iowa still has work to do including getting a bit more mobile along with improving his overall accuracy and throwing the football better on the move and outside of the pocket. However....Palicki has a ton of upside for the next level and his game keeps getting better each time I see him live.

Offensive Linemen

The Class of 2024 in Illinois is no question OG/OC heavy and has a ton of very good interior linemen to watch over the next several months. So in many ways the offensive tackles types will get a much longer look from multiple college coaches this spring and summer.

Yorkville OG Logan Brasfield- Brasfield has very good junior season tape and physically plays hard at all times. Brasfield moves well, is a fluid athlete who has very good first few steps, bend and leverage and pulls as well as anyone in this class. Brasfield has very good strength and punch and is always downfield making second and third tier level blocks as well. I'm sure multiple FBS/FCS schools will want to see Brasfield at minimum in person this spring and definitely in camps in pads this summer....and I'm betting Brasfield will come out of the padded camp season with multiple offers and college options.

Brother Rice OL Conor Kenzinger (6-foot-7, 285 pounds) Kenzinger has all the physical tools to develop into a high level D1 offensive tackle including impressive length, overall size and a frame that will continue to add good weight and strength. Kenzinger also moves really well for his size and was easily one of the top new faces I saw this winter in person at my Underclassmen showcase. So what's missing? Kenzinger no question is still a bit green at the offensive tackle position and last season was his first at the position. Kenzinger has had an entire off season to work on his overall pass pro fundamentals and technique and will have plenty of chances to show his development and improvement this spring and summer. I would not be stunned to see Kenzinger wind up at the Power 5 level...yet under the current recruiting climate (hello transfer portal) schools at the Power 5 level seem less inclined to offer a kid who would be considered more of a project for those coaches.. If this is the case...Kenzinger would not fall past the FCS in my opinion whatsoever.

Minooka OT Brady Barrowman 6-foot-6, 275 pounds- Barrowman has gotten a ton of off season smoke and rightfully so....Barrowman has impressive length, reach and a frame that will allow him to become a 300 pound player at the high college level and a frame that will carry that weight pretty easily. Barrowman, who is also a lacrosse player runs well...is a very fluid athlete who's work ethic is also a big strength. So what gives and where are the offers? Barrowman I felt had good junior season video...but also showed that he still has work to do including improving his overall run blocking, staying on his feet more consistently and just playing more dominant at the point of attack. I can see Barrowman adding offer sooner rather than later in particular and his winter showcase performance along have shown he's getting better and better. Once the college coaches get to see his improvements this off-season offers should flow.

Tight End

St. Charles North TE Jake Furtney-
Been a fan of Jake Furtney for the last few seasons now. Furtney is an impressive multi sport athlete who just does a lot of things well. The tight end position isn't really deep with overall numbers but the overall amount of high level Power 5 committed tight ends here is impressive in 2024. Furtney I feel is more of a traditional in line tight end who will end up being a really good fit at the FBS/FCS level. This spring and summer will be huge for Jake Furtney in my opinion.

New: Rumor Has It

IHSA is planning to release a press statement tomorrow regarding football...and that's all I was told with no other information. From the handful of people who know this info what it could be we all agree it's most likely something involved 1-32 seeding for all 8 classes for 2023.....now which way they decided to go? Truly zero idea we will learn more tomorrow.

IHSA Maine South Violations Statement

IHSA Announces Rule Violations & Penalties For Maine South Football Program

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) provided notice to Maine South High School on March 8, 2023, that its football program will be sanctioned for the use of ineligible players during the 2022 season.

The penalties come as the result of a joint investigation between the IHSA, Maine South High School, and Maine Township High School District 207. The investigation culminated with the high school and district self-reporting that multiple players violated IHSA By-law 3.030 by participating at Maine South High School while not residing in the school’s attendance area during the 2022 season.

“The IHSA recently received credible information that Maine South football players who did not reside in the district participated on the team during the 2022 IHSA football season,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “District 207 and Maine South High School personnel promptly conducted a meticulous internal investigation, in conjunction with the IHSA, after being informed of these allegations. After a thorough review, they self-reported violations of the IHSA residence by-laws by multiple student-athletes on its 2022 football roster.”

As a result of the investigation, Maine South will forfeit nine total victories against the following teams from the 2022 season: Barrington High School, Bolingbrook High School, Evanston High School, Glenbrook North High School, Glenbrook South High School, New Trier High School, Niles West High School, South Elgin High School, and Stevenson High School.

Additionally, the program will be placed on probation through the end of the 2023-2024 school year and have been formally notified that future violations may result in removal from the IHSA State Football Playoffs.

“The IHSA’s by-laws are the foundation of the Association and its ability to follow its mission of providing equitable participation,” said Anderson. “With over 800 member schools, we depend on our schools to adhere to these rules and to work with the IHSA in instances where violations may have occurred. I commend Maine Township High School District 207 and Maine South High School personnel for recognizing the serious nature of these allegations and their diligence in investigating and reporting these violations. I believe that District 207 has already begun to take appropriate steps to prevent future issues like this from occurring again and will aid them in any way that I can in that process.”

Favorite Pregame Spots

I’ve been meaning to make this post for a minute… well here it is.

I’m asking EdgyNation for your favorite pre-game spots on a Friday/Saturday and feel free to “rank” them with the below variables or include your own. Include what geographical area or HS it is near. Please note this question is about good spots to help fans with recommendations and to help local economies, not about getting drunk or wasted before a HS football game.

Ranking variables I identified (feel free to use your own if you’d like):

1. Food
2. Drinks
3. Location/Parking/Atmosphere
4. Quickness of Service
5. Price Point

One new spot I enjoyed prior to a LWE game was Soundgrowler Brewing, think it was roughly 10 min or so away from LWE stadium. They offer their own craft beers, tacos, and have plenty of space to relax.

Soundgrowler Brewing - South Burbs ie Tinley area.

Overall - 4.25/5

1. Food - 4/5. They offer tacos and taco related food made in house.
2. Drinks - 4/5 - as I am a craft beer fan, however I don’t believe they off full bar.
3. Location/Space - 5/5 - Plenty of space inside to sit and relax.
4. Quickness of Service - 5/5.
5. Price Point - 4/5.
