Been saying this for some time now.....

That legalized sports betting is going to become an epidemic among the younger crowd no question......and it's only a matter of time before we see some serious fallout to college sports. Having a app on your phone that allows you to bet pretty much on anything is again just very dangerous.....and my next question which I will post separately is how long before high school sports are truly impacted from the various betting avenues (Ok I know some of you are already betting with friends local bookie etc.). And I wont lie if major betting company XYZ comes to me and throws all sorts of cash at me.....it would be hard to say no to especially in horrible media market

Annual NFHS reminder

That if you are struggling to justify paying money for the quality you may get on NFHS, there are plenty of schools across the country that provide free NFHS voucher codes on their athletic website (good for a full year). For the public, on their own school websites. A nice little google search can help ease this burden by taking advantage.

Boring Start to 2023 Season

A number of Friday's games have been pushed back to a later start time. In a just ( football) world, schools would suspend classes today and today's games would have a 1:00 p.m. start time. This would add an element of drama to the games (for the fans, coaches, players and training/medical staffs) and would definitely determine which teams have taken off-season conditioning seriously!

While it is true that the playing conditions would be tough (some would even say, brutal), think of the PRIDE the players who persevered would have facing their parents, girl/boyfriends and fans!!!! Playing in these conditions would definitely deserve it's own section in the particular school's yearbook. Since some would view the playing conditions as extraordinarily extreme, I could even see the IHSA proposing a certificate be given to each player who survived the conditions in REASONABLY good shape.

More comments on this could be made, but my TONGUE is starting to really hurt my CHEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy New Year

Just about my favorite time on the calendar. Everyone is unbeaten. Everyone believes this their year. And everyone should.

As a writer I loved this day as much as any. The bands, the grills and the crowds - yep, just damn perfect for me.

My travels have taken me out of Illinois to Virginia but the feeling is still very much the same.

If you don’t get a chill tonight when your team takes the field or a tear and limo in your throat as a group of kids belt out a fabulous version of the anthem, seek help.

Tonight is about the kids as will the next 13 weeks will be as well. Don’t ever forget that. It’s why we do, what we do.

Welcome for football 2023. It’s a great day!

JCA

Hi everyone!! Look forward to our discussions

Seen so little on JCA and it was all bad. I know we moved up and that is great. But do we have a poor team?

Some questions:
1) do we have one good running back or 5 that couldn't run?
2) Line o and D review. Any size?
Do we have a QB
Do we have a defense?
Any Sophs that are ready?

Not sure I will like the answer.

CPL Pick 'Em Week 1

Oh baby, it's great to be back. It's that time of year where toilets start to clog, renovation projects get delayed and the CPL starts play Wednesday at 4. While this heat wave moves everyone off the anticipated early kick, we'll focus on one game per stadium this week. As usual, remember, the rules don't Mather, just get us that hot analysis and your take on these mighty matchups...

Eckersall: Friday 4:15 - Julian vs Fenger
Another season for Fenger without Finger at the helm such a colossal let down for the first game on the CPL slate for the season. While this is undoubtedly disappointing, the anticipated typical CPS result will happen. First game of the season means Julian doesn't have enough to field a team, FENGER wins by forfeit!

Rockne: Friday 7:15 - Clark vs Collins
Clark brings the beef and heavy ground and pound run game. Collins finally sees the triplets graduate after being rejected for another extra year of eligibility and are a spread em out and run and shoot offense. Clearly the matchup that has the advantage answers that age old question: Where's the beef? Clark pounds out another year opening dub.

Lane: Friday 4:15 - Celmente vs Aspira Co-Op
I think this is the first time I have seen Aspira listed as a co-op. Every other year they are listed as having a varsity team and every other year they end up playing maybe 2 games. Does the co-op change that? My guess no. The only reliable thing to go off with this one is that while that scoreboard enters year two at Lane, my guess is there's at least a few lights out on it already.

Winnemac: Friday 4:15 - Noble - Golder vs Senn
Easy to pick this one as it's the only Friday game with no lights at the mighty Winnemac. One would think with a nice facility CPS would invest in some lights with the help of the park district instead of throwing small turf fields around that teams can barely fit on to practice, but it is CPS we're dealing with so let's embrace the 4:15 and hope we end up getting a 2:30/3 start to really kick off the football weekend (yes weekends can start on Wednesday if you're doing it right). But analysis for this one is simple.. DAWGZ!

Gately: Friday 4:15 - Corliss vs Noble - Hansberry
Man we could have got some marquee attention with the Beast taking on Kenwood, but alas game is rescheduled to Saturday. Before getting to are actual matchup I will make a prediction on this one. Game is Saturday, everyone is announcing 10 am. Someone will post its actually at 7 because why would host such a big game at 10 am on a freaking Saturday morning. Everyone will be confused. No one will know what's going on. The game will start whenever both teams show up kicking off whatever small ticket game should be played. Fingers will be pointed, names will be called, the beast will roll... Okay now we get to our game of the week! Corliss is primed and ready, they have been steadily climbing the ranks of CPL, the Berries are good one year awful the next. Which means they are primed to be eaten. Give me the Snakes of Corlisssssssssssssssss!

Stay hydrated for this weekend folks, we're back!

Impact Player for Montini Catholic:

Montini Catholic will welcome back several key returning starters for the 2023 season, yet a somewhat under the radar name could become the Broncos key for the upcoming season. Senior QB Dominic Catalano, who started at wide receiver in 2022 is moving over to quarterback this fall for Montini Catholic. Catalano, who is already verbally committed to UIC for baseball is a terrific all around athlete who started as a quarterback at Montini during his freshman season. Look for Catalano to be asked to lead a Broncos team in serious need of on and off the field leadership in 2023.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Montini Catholic Broncos:

Montini Catholic and veteran head coach Mike Bukovsky is seeking to get back to the IHSA state playoffs this fall after posting two back to back 3-6 seasons in 2022 and 2021. The Broncos had become a Catholic school power over the years, including Montini Catholic playing in the 2018 Class 5A state title game. Mike Bukovsky, who was a long time trusted assistant under retired Montini Hall of Fame head coach Chris Andriano has posted a 35-24 record in 6 seasons in his tenure as head coach.

The biggest question facing Montini Catholic in 2023? Can this very proud football program get back on track in 2023? I'm still not sure what happened at Montini over the last handful of seasons....but all I know is that the overall feel and vibe on the Broncos sidelines has been much different compared to previous seasons. Montini has made some recent assistant coaching changes and hopefully they have found the right mix to move forward this fall. 2023? The schedule this fall is a bit more tolerable compared to last season, and along with having a veteran starting lineup the overall numbers still remain in this program. I'll say Montini winds up as say a 6-3 regular season record in 2023.

Preseason ICE chatter

Small school fans.....here is the preseason ICE discussion. With the release of the master schedule it's a little easier to get a feel for how things may shake out. The bad news is as myself and my contacts at other schools are becoming further removed from the football programs, so my information is becoming less and less each year. Feel free to add anything you have!

Braidwood - I look for RC to take a significant dip this year. It's inevitable, right? They were an extremely talented team that lost a lot of that talent. I think the recent success was enough to get gather some interest in playing football and keep them in the program, however I don't think the talent is there. The Comets won't be the perennial push-over that they were a few years ago, however I don't see the success of the last two seasons in the cards. I look for them to be a playoff contender and maybe even pick up a first round win against a cupcake. If they didn't make the playoffs and missed out with a 4-5 record it wouldn't be the news story of the century either. For this year I say they will be in the upper portion of that middle group in the ICE. Their non-con slate improves a little bit as they will have a tough opponent in Johnsburg. Not a world beater by any means, however it won't be a gimme like RC has had in their recent OOC games. If they can beat Johnsburg week 2 I think that will be a good indicator for the season. If they lose to Johnsburg the season isn't over, it just means they have to tighten it up in all their remaining games. I see them anywhere between 7-2 and 4-5. I'll still let them ride last year's momentum and predict them at 6-3.

Coal City - Should be a two team race between CC and Wilmo. Love the fact that they are still playing Morris and it's a renewed rivalry. Also love the fact that they aren't scared of playing a tough OOC game. Canton should be an easy win. I don't anticipate CC struggling with the rest of the conference outside of Wilmo. The middle of their schedule is brutal though with Lisle, Peotone, RC, and Wilmo all in a row. It could be possible they overlook any of those teams preparing for Wilmo. I see them 8-1 to 6-3. I'll go with 7-2.

Herscher- A team I have no intel on. I imagine they will still be at the bottom of the ICE. They lost some close ones last year and they got blown out in a few. Charleston could be a shot at a win and I think that could be be a gauge on the rest of the season. If they can beat them, then maybe they can slide past some of the ICE teams that are down. I like that they are playing Bishop Mac, however it would be cooler if Herscher had a shot at being god this year. Either way it's a cool area game and I wish Mac would try to play them or Manteno more often. I see Herscher toward the bottom of the ICE and I am clueless on their record. Could be 0-9 or could be 3-6. I'll say 1-8 just because the ICE has never seen a team with 0 wins (even back to the days with Westmont in the I-8, I went back quite a bit and still didn't see a winless record).

Lisle- Another team with no real intel. The Benedictine factor is real and they catch CC, RC, and Seneca at home. Their toughest string is going to be Seneca, Wilmo and CC in the first 4 weeks. Their OOC schedule is relatively easy with a win from Harvard. Seneca had an awesome year last year before running into Byron, but their schedule isn't the toughest. Seneca will b a great gauge for Lisle. I like seeing the old I-8 matchup. too. Lisle is always in the middle pack for me and it seems like they are always a 5-4 caliber team. I will predict them to do the same this year. 5-4

Manteno- I remember the days when Manteno was a damn fine team. They had some really talented groups. It seems as though they are not quite there again. I like their OOC schedule being totally old school I-8 and picking up Sandwich and Plano. It could be possible for them to be 4-0 (Sandwich is a gimme) to start the season. I think it'll be more like 3-1 but still not a bad start for a program that needs some positive momentum. The bad news is their schedule is backloaded so even if they go 4-5 I don't see a gimme on the backhalf of their schedule. I think they could go 1-8 all the way to 4-5. My gut tells me that 3-6 is the right number.

Peotone- Another middle of the pack team. Their OOC is basically 2 glorified scrimmages (Rantoul and Sandwich) , but it will be good to get that extra time before they play RC, Wilmo, and CC the next 3 weeks. After that it is time to coast into the playoffs again. 6-3 to 4-5 is the range here but I like Peotone to be 5-4 with a guaranteed berth to the postseason.

Streator- The OOC schedule could be two wins (east peoria and Ottawa). It should be at least 1 for sure. I'm not sure what else happens for some of the lower level teams in the ICE, but Streator is right there with them. For a larger school they need to figure out how to get the athletes out and how to maximize their potential. I don't know much about them but I don't expect much either. 0-9 to 4-5 is the range here. I'll go 2-7.

Wilmington - I can hear the Harleys in the woods now. Expect the Cats to be back on top of the ICE. Their OOC is fairly easy (Seneca and Aurora Christian). Seneca could be a little tough, but like I said their schedule last year was pretty easy. I hear Wilmo is deep at every position. I like them to finish undefeated and think their fate in the playoffs is totally up to them. My only concern is that they aren't battle tested come playoff time, however their last two games are pretty easy and gives them time to rest up.I don't know what the correct school of thought is on this. I'm sure everybody has differing opinions. 9-0.

ICE standings with record

Wilmo 9-0
CC 7-2
RC 6-3
Peotone 6-3
Lisle 5-4
Manteno 3-6
Streator 2-7
Herscher 1-8
