ICE Week 1 Thread

EPG @ Reed-Custer - on paper this game looks like a pretty even matchup. EPG is a staple at the top of the HOI conference and this season looks to be no different. EPG always has good athletes and they have played on turf for several years and their speed could cause the Comets some problems. Read that RC has a returning QB but are nowhere close to where they were a few years ago. EPG 33 RC 28

Coal City @ Morris - two perennial playoff teams in their prospective classes and I would expect this to be a very physical game. Morris has more weapons on offense and they have very good WR that may cause the Coalers some issues. CC battles early but struggles to maintain the speed, athleticism, and physicalness of The Morris Football Team.

Harvard @ Lisle - both programs struggled last year and this is a must win for both programs to build some momentum for the season. There is potential that this might be the only winnable game for both programs but with HS football you never know. Lisle 28 Harvard 18

Streator @ Decatur IKE - Eisenhower will have the better athletes, Streator has a new coach. Ike has a pretty good QB but tend to struggle a on the LOS, similar to what I have read about Streator on this board. Streator's HC however knows a thing or two about running the ball, which is not something the Bulldogs have done, well in the past. Just Streator 20 Ike 12

Chicago Christian @ Herscher - no information at all about either of these programs except that Herscher has fell on some tough times and Chicago Christian seems to be a program that is on the rise, at least based on the past few seasons. Chicago Christian 32 Herscher 18

Peotone vs. Munchin College Prep - obviously not much of a matchup and the Devils should be able to score at will in this one. Would like to see a tougher opponent for a team trying to join CC and Wilmington at the top of the conference but we all know how tough scheduling can be. Peotone 56 Munchin 0

Sandwich @ Manteno - I think Sandwich surprised a lot of people last year qualifying for the playoffs then making it to the Quarterfinals. Their early season wins last year over Manteno and Petone helped them gain confidence in conference play. Hearing Manteno is much improved from last season with some new coaches and a few new players but will they be able to stop the ground and pound of Sandwich is the question. Sandwich 34 Manteno 33

Chicago Hope vs. Wilmington - easily the best game among ICE teams this week. The Wildcats coming off a State Title win and Hope who was only a few feet from playing in Hancock stadium. I am sure both teams lost key players from last year but probably return some key players as well. A great test for both of these programs and both will walk away a better team than when the game stated. Two opposite styles of play should make this an entertaining game. Wilmington 35 Hope Academy 26

Happy New Year

Yes, it's nice every August when football season comes back around, even though in this corner of the prep football world, there's no "home team" for whom to root.
That said, I do have two observations as we head into Week 1 action.
1) It's a bit unfortunate that with roughly 500 schools playing football in Illinois, maybe 40 of them (8 classes, 5 teams per class) have any even semi-realistic chance of hoisting the big trophy in Normal on Thanksgiving weekend.
For football fans with no team allegiance, I think that sucks a lot of the anticipation out of the season, and it seems it has also sucked a lot of life out of this website. It's kind of like what it will be like watching the Ohio State /Oregon and Alabama /Georgia college football games this fall. Great teams. Great games to watch. But win or lose, all those teams will make the expanded postseason so the angst that comes with your favorite team playing a danger game that is a win-or-go-home just isn't there..
In football, the well-worn expression is "The rich get richer." In Illinois prep football, it's more like "The rich stay rich."
2) The constant debate about recruiting top-end football players by private high schools ... well, it's obviously still happening.
But this season, arguably the highest-ranked prep QB in this state in the Class of 2026 transferred from Bolingbrook to state super-power Lincoln-Way East.
On a website, I heard the Oregon verbal commit answer when asked why he transferred to L-W East. He certainly could have said it's because he feels L-W East is a stronger academic school and offers him more educational opportunities than Bolingbrook.
Again, he could have said that, true or not.
What I heard him say was, "I want to win."
Absolutely nothing wrong with that.
But that transfer of a major, major talent, does support the position that powerhouse public schools are now destination schools for talented football players. And it's likely going to get even more common of a happening. With top college football players literally being paid professionals starting with the prep senior class of 2025, there's huge money for players offered cash by big-name schools.
High school seniors are no longer playing for a college scholarship, with a value that's similar whether it be at Michigan or at Northern Illinois.
Now, the seniors are playing for a lot of money, and the belief surely among many players and many parents is that it's more likely to be able to cash in at the collegiate level by excelling at a major high school program that is playing deep into November rather than for a bottom feeder that considers three wins a good season.
As a result, it's possible that the high school "transfer portal" in Illinois could wind up ridiculously busy from now on, as has happened with the college football portal.

CS8 Predictions-Week 1

If the Rockets are sluggish early, it could be a long afternoon.

I'm looking to the CBC-SHG score as something of a marker for Rochester-Ritter next week. Not a perfect comparison but think there is some validity to it.
I also see if the Rockets can beat Simeon soundly, and not necessarily in a dominant manner, it will be a precursor to success against SHG. The reciprocal can be true as well.

CS8 Predictions-Week 1

I think the possibility of Simeon beating the Rockets is reasonable. And that CBC SHG game is going to be a long ride home for the Cyclones

Program question?

hypothetically speaking you have 1100 students in your school yet only 39 varsity kids…
and the trend has become can’t keep kids in the program for all 4 years.
how do would you feel? what are ways to fix said problems?
OH and btw it’s not like you literally have college like facilities etc etc..
IMO
If you are waiting until HS you’re late. Building your culture through the community and youth programs. It starts early. The best programs and coaches know the kids and parents at the youth level. They get the youth players involved with the HS. Go to games etc. The parents are key. You have to get the parents involved and the community and culture will follow.

Sangamo Conference Woes

I mean let's be real honest here, Cigarettos has no real leg to stand on when bashing QND for the "strength" or lack thereof he claims when he's speaking about a conference that has Southeast, Lanphier, Lincoln, and Eisenhower in it... Literally half, or more, of the CS8 is as bad or worse than QND in terms of program strength.

Edit: Add U-high, Jax, and SHS to that list as well.
20 playoffs appearances in 58 seasons says what?

Sangamo Conference Woes

Because the stalest cigar(os) on the forums thinks QND is not up to CS8 standards....

20 playoff appearances [2A-1] [3A-2] [4A-17]
Overall Record: 166 - 88
Playoff Record: 21 - 20
Semis-2, Quarters-5

QND not only brings 21 playoff wins to the conference, they also have but only one less playoff dub than Glenwood, the clear 3rd best team in the CS8 since 2000. Outside of the annual 3 losses to the top 3 in the CS8, I think QND would have done just fine most years in the CS8 since 2000. If I get bored later maybe I'll run through Calpreps projections for seasons in the CS8, i think they go back to 2001.

Lincoln, U-High, Mac, Ike, SE, SHS, Lanphier, Jax combined playoff wins is only 3 greater than QND since 2000.

I guess we just don't belong in a conference with primarily doormat programs that only exist to take beatings from Rochester, SHG, and Glenwood. Back to praying to our Lord and Savior about how "fortunate" we are to get invited to such a prestigious downstate high school conference.
Good run down of stats. You did miss Glenwood's title in 1998. But otherwise, at least you looked something up. Which brings to mind your lil bottom dwellers who were 2-6 against competition with a winning record.

Rochester- 10-0
Glenwood- 5-4
MacArthur- 3-3
SHG- 3-4
U-High- 2-3

And then we get to your domain of the almost Mendoza line level of success
Jacksonville- 1-5
Springfield- 1-5
Lincoln 0-4

As an offering of grace, you're 2-7 (25% chance), 3-6 (50% chance), 4-5 (25% chance). Should gone Sangamo. You'd be 6-3 (25%), 7-2 (50%), 8-1 (25%, but only if the Maroa or Williamsville bus breaks down and they miss the first quarter.

But you are correct... QND does not belong in either of the Central State 8 divisions.

Program question?

We see no reference in this thread to after-school/weekend employment as an alternative to FB participation, but consider the following sign-of-the-times. I spoke to an owner of 3 mid-sized restaurants in the metro Milwaukee area and his personnel challenges. In total for the 3 sites, only 1 or 2 HS kids total were employed for the summer. He has had to meet his needs with adults, some of which bring major background baggage to the job. I guess, though, more adults work longer and more jobs to make ends meet, which could put HS kids at the back of the line.

Program question?

talking about Marion btw
as someone who went there the problem is keeping 90% of the 60 freshman kids who come out for football every year! my senior class had 60 freshman kids then 9 seniors
marion covid year undefeated would have made HEAVY noise in 5a playoffs , following year lost quarterfinals to kankakee ( you should watch that game it was awesome)
so these kids now have literally seen our best years of marion football EVER

you know white people down here in marion got that money lol
That prison money, huh?
