Success Factor/NAZ

You don’t think winning the 8A title is a much bigger challenge than 7A? There is LA, LWE, York, Marist, MS, NC, … it seems so much deeper than 7A. I agree MC would be highly competitive in 8A and a threat to win it at every year, but 8A is a different beast.
You're right, of course. The competition in 8A is outstanding. LA is LA, always a challenge. Marist has never beaten Carmel in its entire history, but I've seen Maine South run all over us. Our record against LWE is 3-0, I think. MC has played three times, winning once, in the 8A title game, a respectable showing for a school that's been factored up. What I am considering, though, is that this year's Caravan is loaded with juniors and underclassmen who are not only starting but playing well. We'll lose Jack Elliott but gain Emmett Dowling, who, under Jordan Lynch, should develop into a facsimile of his brother. Blainey Dowling, you'll remember, helped MC beat Loyola in '22, one of the best games I have ever seen. Since Loyola took state that year, it is not unreasonable to believe that, had MC played Loyola in the 8A finals, MC might have gone home with the trophy. That was an exceptionally good Carmel team, and next year's squad could be as good or better.

A 5 class 52 team playoff system with no multiplier for anyone, no sucess factor for anyone, a 9 game regular season starting a week earlier, and the ability to still petition up would be fascinating. 4 more playoff teams, but 3 less titles. Top 12 in all 5 classes get a 1st round bye. Next 40 in each class have 1st round games. #13-#52 all the way to #32-#33 in the first round and so on. I have no idea what this would look like but it is intriguing for sure. No chance obviously of happening but something that would definitely be interesting to see.

Q of the Week: Did Northwestern build a future host site for IHSA Football finals?

You can't tell the difference of 2 and 20 yards? I hope you don't have a driver's license
I saw Walter Payton gain 275 yards in one game at Soldier Field -- from deep in the south end zone. For a good parto f each play, I couldn't tell if he was running sideways or on an angle.

I know my eyesight is weak today, but this was 40 or so years ago when things were much different (in many, many ways)

MC vs SR Part 105

Such a great stadium. With the speed of todays game can you imagine how many players would run through they wall in the endzone now! That 1988 game.....Dan Miller never threw the ball that many times the whole year combined. But it was so muddy MC couldn't get the veer going in the mud, plus SRs front 7 were killing MC. Then Lenti realized our receivers in muddy shoes were faster then Rita's DBs in muddy shoes, let's pass! It worked. Had it been played at Gately on turf it actually would have been to Rita's advantage I think because Gordon and Sierra would have had good days on the turf and our veer vs Rita's front would have similar to how it went in 1989.
My good friend and old neighbor Nairobi Allen who played RB was on that 88 team.

Class expansion has certainly helped do what you suggest. Going from 5 to 6 to 8 classes has created three more classes for private schools to win.

Anyone seeing/hearing anything regarding Live TV this Saturday?

Yeah I’ve had Montini hudl bookmarked for the last month or so 😉
Not that this mean anything to anyone who doesn't know how I search, but Montini apparently has too many Hudl events scheduled this week and the semi final football games falls to page 2 of the search results.

And the Season Long standings. Is there enough time for the Comeback Kid Iggy to steal the crown from the Rookie? Or can 3ow catch k18 for the Crazies? Can Kteen keep the lead over the aforementioned HOFers? Tune in Wednesday handicappers! Who's got it better than us? NOBODY!

4A Semi-Finals

I have U-High over Mt. Zion, to host the state total on their home field. In the North, I think DePaul gets it done, but deep down I want a Coal City/U-High rematch to avenge the loss last year. Regardless of who wins the North, if U-High wins the South, I like their chances to bring it all home with their near-unstoppable offense on their home field.

Things have heated up in the playoff race. This will go down to the wire.

Hard to imagine two better atmospheres than the 88 and 89 games. I was sitting on the MC side in 88, as close as you could get to 64th and Oakley. Was so dejected after MC dominated the 2nd half.

I am sure there were bigger crowds for the MC v JCA games with McNabb and Alston, but that 89 game was the most people I saw inside (and outside the gates of) Gately. Rita was fortunate that Lenti went ultra conservative
