Kneeling for a hurt player

Last night at the Benet/Rockton game one of Rockton's players went down with an injury in the first half. Both teams went to the sidelines while the player received treatment on the field. About 30 seconds into the injury timeout, Rockton's crowd started yelling and booing at the Benet's coaches, team, and bench that they were being disrespectful for not kneeling during the injury timeout. At Benet, the visiting crowd is partially behind the Benet bench, so our bench heard it very easily. I noticed that all Rockton's players and even their cheerleaders were kneeling. I assumed respect is shown an injured player by clapping for them as they exit the field. A couple of questions here - is kneeling for an injured opponent something that is usually done ? Is this a practice done more often in other parts of the state or country, but not Chicagoland?

This happens everywhere. Doesn't surprise me the Benet team shows the lack of respect. The Apple normally doesn't fall far from the tree.

Around Kankakee, the knee is usually taken...not just in respect for the injured, but to keep the sightline open if additional aid is needed - both teams trainers, paramedics whatever who are usually on duty in the stadium...

It's so parents in the stands can see if it's their kid injured on the field. Has nothing to do with respecting an injured athlete. Was something they asked kids to do in youth football. Did it hurt people's feelings because they didn't kneel? Was someone offended because they stood? Geez.

Junior programs ... maybe.

I’m taking that as timeout time

Any injury timeout I've seen in HS, refs only allow water personnel on field, players can't go further out than the numbers, and coaches can't leave sideline... so any coaching occurring is a discussion from sideline to players at the numbers.

I've been watching prep football since ,,, well, that's not important, but I've never heard of kneeling in respect of an injured player.

It's been 20 years since I played and taking a knee was never a thing then. Our coaches used a serious injury to talk strategy. We clapped when dude was wheeled off and got back to playing. Injuries happen and no one ever wants to see them but it happens. People are too sensitive these days.

It really depends on where you are. Some areas take it more seriously than others, but personally I’ve never seen it as disrespectful to continue to stand. Sometimes it’s just a Charlie horse and parents are yelling at kids to “have some class.” Seriously.

One of the most bizzare things I've seen. There's enough and any football game to get fired up about, but taking a knee during and injury is not one. Now if Bennet was kicking the kid and spitting on him while he was injured on the ground, then I'd say the jeers might be justified.

It was at a point of the game, middle/late 3rd quarter, that the Rockton parents seemed to be more frustrated with the inability to generate any offense and it manifested itself in the unhappiness with the kneeling issue.

As noted above majority of the Rockton players & coaches were not kneeling either. Benet trainers went out to the player when the Rockton trainers did. The player left the field a few minutes later, with applause from fans on both sides.

I have been coaching for 30+ years and I am not sure when or where this began. Not sure why kneeling is considered a show of respect to an injured player. These fans would be really mad if they come to a practice and see a kid go down. Normally practice continues as the training staff tends to the injured player.

This year a lady from a visiting team sitting on the home side yelled at my players, who were coming to the numbers for water, that they needed to show respect by kneeling for an injured player from her team. I told her she needed to show respect by sitting on her team’s side and cheering her team on instead of yelling at mine.

Everyone has their own thoughts on this. If you want to kneel thinking it shows respect, by all means kneel. However, I do not think it is a universal belief by all people, that kneeling is respectful.

As someone who currently plays we’ve always gone to our huddles. I haven’t seen kneeling for an injured player since probably 5th grade, and I’ve never felt disrespect if the other team didn’t kneel for one of our guys. Could be different depending on the area though.

Lighten up Francis, you seem to be disrespecting a group of kids and players you don't even know. Shouldn't blast players on this site!
I agree.Benet is nothing but class.I'm pro military & police 100% so no respect for the oppressed kneelers mentioned earlier in the post.

Agree with you on not blasting players, but there are some posters on here which have a problem with someone PRAISING players.

Here’s my take

Results from the game Praise = good!

Lots of posters praise players by name and/or by number. There are about 20 great posts just from this weekend that are great examples of this “good praise”

Creepy/Stalker type Praise = creepy not good.

Maybe it’s like what the Judge said from an old historical case about porn vs art. “Can’t give you a litmus test for it, but I know it when I see it”

Heard a parent yell about kids not kneeling for an injury earlier this year but honestly first time I had seen it or heard it in a high school game. Definitley happens in youth but doesn’t seem like it happens in high school games that I have noticed

Kneeling for a bell ringer, twisted knee or ankle, nah. EMTs on the field with a stretcher, yeah. It's high school football, not 8 year old soccer.

Rockton came to Joliet for a Semi-Final game in ‘96. When I returned home, a friend of mine who lived in the Rockford area and caught part of the game on local radio while running errands had left a message on the answering machine wondering what had happened in the 2nd Half because the radio announcer had a drumbeat of describing the Hilltopper fans (on the other side of the JMS) as unruly and hostile.
That drifts into my mind every time I am on I-90 and see the sign for Rockton.
Maybe it is something in their water.
