So what is the biggest question facing the 2021 Brother Rice Crusaders this fall? Make sure to check back here daily for new teams and the biggest questions each day leading up to IHSA Fall Football Kickoff.
Team: Brother Rice Crusaders
Biggest Question?
Brother Rice is coming off a 4-2 record in the spring season and lost to both Marist and Loyola in back to back weeks. Brother Rice head coach Brian Badke also announced that he was stepping down from his coaching position at the end of the fall season. Badke, who has posted a 64-37 record in nine seasons at Brother Rice will be replaced by Casey Quedenfeld who comes to Brother Rice from high profile high school programs in Texas and California.
The Biggest Question? Can the Crusaders help Brian Badke go out as a state champion in 2021?
Brother Rice no question will be a team to watch this fall and look to have all the makings of a team that will be highly ranked in both the preseason Class 8A polls along with the Chicagoland polls as well. Brother Rice played several underclassmen this past spring and the overall talent level remains high again this fall. Just getting out of the CCL Blue will be a battle with a schedule which includes Loyola. Mount Carmel, JCA and Marist.
The Crusaders will look towards a veteran team with experience and talent on both sides of the football this fall. Senior QB Jack Lausch, who is committed to Notre Dame in both football and baseball is primed for w big 2021 season. The Brother rice run game got a boost when senior RB Aaron Vaughn Jr. transferred into Rice from Providence, while senior RB/S Khary Shaw is simply one of the top overall football players in Illinois this fall. Senior TE Henry Boyer (Illinois) is another impact name to watch while the offensive line is led by three seniors in Jackson Judeh, Carter McAilly and Pat Galeher.
The Brother Rice defense is also stacked. Keep an eye on the Crusaders defensive line with junioor Roderick Trey Pierce, senior Kevin Frazier and senior Jack Mallon while junior LB Henry Ivers is a name on the rise in recruiting circles. The Rice secondary also welcomes back three returning starters led by senior Damion Hall. Also junior OL/DL DeMarcus Caston Jr. (6-foot-4, 370 pounds) is a big, strong and very agile interior linemen who has a chance at cracking the Crusaders lineup on either side of the football this season.
The main question mark I have regarding Rice this fall? The overall depth doesn't look great and with a 14 game goal for the fall season some depth will need to develop this summer.
But can this Brother Rice team take Brian Badke back to a state title game this fall? As of today...sure I can see the Crusaders having a pretty strong shot at a deep run....but ask me again after say mid to late regular season. and that could change.
