Congrats to RameyJacoby for the rookie win last week. Gambletron has another test for us this week. Stirring things up down south again, playing it close in LaGrange and setting the bar really high in Woodlawn and Wilmette. I hear Batavia is bringing their own refs this time.

CS8 Prediction-Week 13

Saturday 3 PM #1 Rochester (12-0) at #2 Murphysboro (11-1)
After three straight home contests, Rochester faces a road game against a perennial playoff team in Murphysboro. An afternoon high of 56 is projected, which is great for mid-November. Last year, the Red Devils lost in the Quarterfinals to SHG. In 2019, they were in the 4A championship game and lost to Richmond Burton. The Rockets have faced Murphysboro once before in the playoffs, winning at home in the 2nd round in 2015. At that time, the current players for both teams would've been playing in JFL. Murphysboro won 8 straight contests to start the season, including wins over 3A-5A playoff qualifiers Carbondale, Benton, Harrisburg, and Carterville. In Week 9, they suffered their only loss of the season to highly ranked 3A DuQuoin 39-7. The margin of this defeat was somewhat surprising, particularly after DuQuoin subsequently lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Murphysboro won handily in Week 10 over former CS8 school Taylorville and won narrowly the last two weeks, 14-13 over Charleston and 25-20 last week on the road in a rematch with Harrisburg. The Harrisburg win was decided on the game's final play with the Red Devils coming from behind to win on a 30-yard TD pass. Max Preps does not have individual stats for Murphysboro. I would expect them to have a run-first offense but to also have a capable QB. The Red Devils had one player make the coaches all state team and one more make honorable mention.

Rochester would love to have a start similar to the Quarterfinal contest last season at Carterville. Before a large and enthusiastic Lions crowd, the Rockets scored on the third play of the game when Parker Gillespie took a short pass 75 yards for a TD. Rochester was then able to build a 34-7 halftime lead, which quieted the home crowd considerably. The Rochester Defense has performed very well so far in the playoffs even while dealing with a few injuries, allowing no more than 14 points in any of the three games. The Offense has scored plenty of points but has also had too many turnovers and penalties. As Derek said after the Breese Central contest, the Offense can look great for four or five plays but then suddenly find itself facing a 3rd and 30. Bryan Zulauf and Gillespie have split snaps at QB since Parker returned from an injury in Week 8. Zulauf ran for over 100 yards and 4 TD's last week. Gillespie had a running TD as well. In Week 1 at Peoria, the Offense didn't have many big plays but avoided turnovers and had only a handful of penalties. Consistency from the Rocket offense will be a key factor in determining the outcome. Rochester 42 Murphysboro 14 (Cal Preps: Rochester 38 Murphysboro 14)

State Finals records

Some pretty historically impressive programs reach the state finals this year as well as a first timer. Below are the all time records for each school playing this week
Lena-Winslow 6-0
Camp Point 0-2

Wilmington 2-1
Athens 0-0

Byron 2-2
Mt Carmel 1-4

St Laurence 1-1
Rochester 8-0

Joliet Catholic 15-4
Nazareth 4-2

East St Louis 10-4
Cary-Grove 3-3

Mt Carmel 14-5
DOwners North 1-1

Loyola 4-5
Lincoln Way East 3-2

Of these schools, Joliet Catholic and East St Louis have both won state championships in every decade in which they have been held. I believe they are the only two programs in the state who have done this.

Championship game picks

1A Lena/CampPoint - Lena showed some vulnerability in the semis, rematch from last year. I’ll go with Lena although I’d like to see the upset. 34-28
2A I think Wilmington should win unless they self destruct. Two double wing teams, but I think Wilmo wins the battle at the LOS. 35-14.
3A somewhat interesting with Byron being a beast, but Mt.Carmel the Public is putting up huge numbers on offense. Byron 56-28.
4A I’d like to see Larry make it interesting, but will be Rochester without much resistance. Rockets 49-21.
5A Naz/JCA… will we see the first ever 5 loss champ? Rooting for the Joliet area. JCA 35-34.
6A ESL gets revenge for the shocking upset a couple years ago. Flyers 34-21.
7A Caravan easily, 45-14
8A Loyola in a close game, 17-13.

State Finals Players to watch 1A to 8A

I don’t have a rooting interest this coming weekend (other than cheering on my CCL/ESCC brethren). Ok, I guess that’s a rooting interest but semantics aside, tell me what players to keep an eye on. Don’t forget Offensive Linemen and 5 tech, 3 tech and 1 tech defensive linemen. Edgy fam, make me the smartest fan on my group text threads Friday and Saturday.

Clown Cup standings through week 13

Its close.

What's the deal with Chicago Hope Academy?

Maybe this is a silly question, but are these guys like Baltimore-St. Frances Junior or something?

Tiny little 1A school, but in the past two years they have played out in California, beaten much larger schools like De La Salle, Marian Central, Quincy Notre-Dame etc.

I'm a lifelong Chicagoan and know nothing about this school... is the whole school a football program essentially?

TV Coverage ... quality there of

I watched the York/LA game and felt that the camera coverage was excellent. The director and staff did a great job.

The two announcers, however, sounded like what would result if Hawk Harrelson and Kenny McReynolds were blended together by a mad scientist.
They popped every cliche imaginable. My favorite, with time running out: ""York better get goin' and they better do it soon." You can't make that up.

Over on CW 26, the game coverage was great. I know that some of you don't care for jack MccInerney, but he and Jim Blaney work very well together.

Did you notice that when McReynolds recollected a conversation with one of the coaches, he always recalled the statement beginning with "Kenny ...." thereby implying that they were on a first name basis. I think what they were really saying was "Kenny, who let you in here?"

The NFHS coverage at Montini and DGN was more than acceptable.
