The Milton v Buford rivalry has grown over the years into one of the most intense in Georgia high school football. Both teams have a history of success, with state championships and numerous playoff appearances between them. This rivalry is not just about the present; it’s about the pride of each school, the tradition of excellence, and the desire to prove who reigns supreme on the field.
Milton High School comes into this game with high expectations. Known for their disciplined approach and well-rounded team, Milton’s players are prepared to give it their all. The team’s strength lies in its balanced offense and stout defense, making them a tough opponent for any team.
This year, Milton’s offense will be led by their star quarterback, whose arm strength and accuracy make him a threat in the passing game. The wide receiving corps is talented and deep, providing plenty of options for the quarterback to spread the ball around. On the ground, Milton’s running backs are known for their speed and agility, capable of breaking big plays at any moment.
Defensively, Milton’s line is a wall of power, ready to disrupt Buford’s offensive strategies. The linebackers are quick and smart, reading plays and reacting with precision. The secondary is solid, with cornerbacks and safeties who are adept at covering receivers and making crucial interceptions.
Buford High School, on the other hand, is equally determined to emerge victorious in the Milton v Buford showdown. Known for their relentless offense and aggressive defense, Buford’s game plan revolves around exploiting any weaknesses in their opponents.
Offensively, Buford is expected to rely heavily on their running game, which has been a cornerstone of their success in recent years. Their running backs are powerful and relentless, often wearing down opposing defenses with their tough running style. The quarterback, while not as heralded as Milton’s, is a dual-threat who can make plays with both his arm and his legs.
On defense, Buford is known for their fierce pass rush and tight coverage. Their defensive line is quick off the snap, often forcing quarterbacks into hurried throws or costly mistakes. The linebackers are versatile, capable of stopping the run or dropping back into coverage. The secondary is aggressive, always looking for an opportunity to turn a pass into an interception.
In the Milton v Buford clash, several players are expected to play pivotal roles. For Milton, the quarterback will undoubtedly be the centerpiece of their offensive strategy. His ability to read defenses and make quick decisions will be crucial to Milton’s success. The running backs and wide receivers will also be key, needing to find ways to break through Buford’s tough defense.
For Buford, the running backs will be the focal point. If they can establish the run early, it will open up the passing game and put pressure on Milton’s defense. On the defensive side, Buford’s pass rushers will need to be at their best to disrupt Milton’s passing game.
The Milton v Buford game on August 16, 2024, is more than just a regular season opener. It’s a statement game for both teams, setting the tone for the rest of the season. A win here could propel the victor into a strong start, building momentum and confidence as they move forward. As with any high-profile game, predictions are swirling around the Milton v Buford matchup. Analysts and fans alike are debating who has the edge, with opinions divided. Milton’s balanced attack and disciplined play are seen as major strengths, but Buford’s physicality and aggressive style could pose significant challenges.
In the end, the outcome of the Milton v Buford game may come down to which team makes the fewest mistakes and capitalizes on their opportunities. Both teams have the talent and coaching to win, but it will be the execution on the field that determines the victor.

Leo senior WR/DB Marshawn Durr (6-foot-0, 170 pounds) is a speedy, twitchy athlete who has the skill set to play multiple positions when needed this fall for the Lions. Look for more colleges to look hard at Durr's senior season video.

Looking for a sleeper name to watch this fall for Leo? Leo senior WR/DB Gavin Donald (5-foot-9, 150 pounds) is another impressive overall athlete and a very strong receiver for the Lions this season.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Leo Lions

Leo and head coach Dr. Marques Stevenson is looking to improve upon the Lions 2023 season which saw them post a 1-8 record. Leo head coach Marques Stevenson posted a 1-8 record in his first season and has a wealth of experience having been in and around IHSA football for years now. Leo is looking to get back into the IHSA football playoffs in 2024 for the first time since 2013.

The biggest question facing Lincoln Way Central this summer?

Can the Lions reload add a bit more overall numbers and depth this summer and challenge for a state playoff spot this fall? Leo again has always battled overall numbers in the school and program going back to Hall of Fame head coach Michael Holmes tenure....yet this program is always very competitive yar in and year out and should be again in 2024.

Lincoln Way Central senior OL Chris Biel (6-foot-4, 275 pounds) is a three year varsity starter for the Knights. Biel has impressive junior season video and has a great motor, good strength and power along with just being a fundamentally sound linemen who will continue to draw recruiting looks this fall.

Looking for a sleeper name to watch this fall for Lincoln Way Central? Lincoln Way Central junior WR Lucas Andersen (6-foot-4, 205 pounds) has impressive physical tools and is an underclassmen name to watch this coming season for Central.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Lincoln Way Central Knights

Lincoln Way Central and head coach Dave Woodburn is looking to im prove upon it's 9-2 season in 2023. The Knights easily was one of the top success stories in 2023 as then first year head coach Dave Woodburn got this proud football program back to winning after a handful years of missing the state playoffs.

The biggest question facing Lincoln Way Central this summer?

Can the Knights reload at a handful of key positions this summer and continue to win games and get back into the IHSA state playoffs this fall? Central and head coach Dave Woodburn had been a long time assistant at Lincoln Way East before moving over to Central and this program continues to make really impressive progress. If the Knights can reload at a few key positions (QB/DB) they have a chance in the new Southwest Valley Green to compete for the conference title and a state playoff spot this fall.

Highland senior FB/ILB Etahn Greenwald (5-foot-11, 200 pounds) is a two way starter and a multi-year varsity starter fore the Bulldogs. Greenwald will be asked to provide leadership on and off the field along with providing a high level of production again this fall.

Looking for a sleeper name to watch this fall for Highland? Highland senior TE/DE Nick Judge (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) is a good sized athlete who will be asked to play full time on both sides of the football this season. Look for Judge to drw more recruiting looskm this summer and fall for the Bulldogs.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Highland Bulldogs

Highland and head coach Jim Warnecke is looking to improve upon the Bulldogs 10-2 record in 2023. Highland posted a 8-1 regular season record, made the Class 5A state playoff field and beat Mt. Vernon and Metamora before losing to Providence Catholic in the 5A quarterfinal rounds. Jim Warnecke has posted an impressive 99-39 record in 13 seasons at HIghland. and the Bulldogs have missed the IHSA state playoff field just once in his tenure.

The biggest question facing Highland this summer?

Can the Bulldogs get back into the IHSA state playoff and make a deeper run in 2024? The Bulldogs had a nice season in 2023 and in some ways those around the program felt this coming season was going to be a real breakout season. Highland welcomes back 15 returning starters (8 offense 7 defense) and if they can add a bit more depth this summer, I can see this team again defending it's Mississippi Valley conference title and making a strong run again in 2024.

Preseason Ranking? 2024 Preseason Class 5A Top 10 heavy consideration.

Lockport junior DL Michael Pratt (6-foot-4, 250 pounds) is a big, strong and very physical defensive linemen for the Porters who also continues to see his recruiting stock rise this summer. Look for more college coaches to take a hard look at Pratt's early season video and offers could come sooner rather than later.

Looking for a sleeper name to watch this fall for Lockport? Lockport sophomore OT Ethan Posey (6-foot-5, 290 pounds) is already adding FBS offers and Power 4 recruiting interest this summer. Posey has impressive size, strength and the overall physical tools to develop into a potential Power 4 player.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Lockport Porters

Lockport and veteran head coach George Czart is looking to improve upon the Porters 5-5 season in 2023. Lockport in 2023 posted a 5-4 regular season record then lost to Maine South in Class 8A first round action. Lockport head coach George Czart is in his second tenure at Lockport after several seasons as the Porters defensive coordinator,. Czart has posted a 31-18 overall record in 5 seasons including winning the 2021 Class 8A state title. Lockport has also made the IHSA state playoffs in three straight seasons.

The biggest question facing Lockport this summer?

Can the Porters reload especially on the offensive side of the football in 2024? Lockport welcomes back just one starter on offense in OL Connor Cronin who was a backup to start the 2023 season but was pressed into action in 2023 because of various injuries. The Lockport defense is always a strength under long time DC and now HC George Czart with 8 starters back. If the Porters can reload the offense and hit the ground running especially against a strong non conference schedule, Lockport has a shot at a fourth straight state playoff spot in 2024.

RIP Coaching Legend Gene Schaller

Coach Schaller passed away July 31st and has been laid to rest August 5th.

When our lives are measured by the positive impacts one has on other people during our time on this earth, Coach Gene Schaller is a first ballot Hall of Famer.

As thousands of his former players place him on their shoulders and lift him, through prayer, to his rightful position next to his long time coaching partner Jack Quinn in God’s stable of irreplaceable youth mentors, my heart goes out to his beautiful family and to the Visitation, St. Rita and St. Cajetan communities.

Gene Schaller. Legend.

Lincoln junior OL/DL Zach Poole (6-foot-7, 315 pounds) is a name to watch for Lincoln this fall and the next. Poole has impressive size, length and physical tools and also moves pretty well for a bigger kid. Poole has already begun to hit several recruiting radar screens this summer.

Looking for a sleeper name to watch this fall for Lincoln? Lincoln senior OL/DL Frank Sanders (6-foot-3, 230 pounds) is another good sized and talented two way starting linemen for the Railspliters this fall.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Lincoln Railsplitter

Lincoln and head coach Matt Silkowski is looking to build upon it's 2023 5-5 record . The Railsplitters made the IHSA state playoff field last season for the first time since 1984 and it was also only the third playoff appearance in school history. Mattt Silkowski has posted a 23-47 record in 8 seasons for Lincoln has the programs head coach.

The biggest question facing Lincoln this summer?

Can the Railsplitters reload at several key positions and get back into the IHSA state playoff field? Lincoln graduated a strong senior class this past spring and wlll need to replace 16 returning starters (8 offense 8 defense). The line play will be solid and a good place to start to build upon this summer. The schedule is solid and a big key for Lincoln will be getting out of the gates quickly and gain some early season momentum for the remainder of the regular season schedule.

Looking for a sleeper name to watch this fall for LaSalle Peru? LaSalle Peru senior LB Danny Beavers has impressive film and showed to have a great nose for the football along with natural instincts as well.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 LaSalle Peru Cavaliers

LaSalle Peru and head coach Jose Medina is looking to improve on it's 4-5 record in 2023. The Cavaliers amd head coach Jose Medina has posted a 37-43 record in 9 seasons at LP and as led the Cavs to the IHSA state playoffs in 3 seasons.

The biggest question facing LaSalle Peru this summer?

Can the Cavaliers find a way to close the gap between the elite teams in the Interstate 8 in 2024? The Cavaliers in 2023 came within a game of getting to 5 wins and into the IHSA state playoffs, but outside of the close loss to Woodstock (17-14) LaSalle Peru really struggled against the remaining playoff teams last season. The Cavs this season welcome back a more experienced team with 13 returning starters (6 offense 7 defense) and if they can settle in on a few key positions (QB/DL) this LP team can become playoff bound in 2024.

Normal West junior QB Jrue Mangruem is a good sized and impressive all around athlete for the Wildcats. Mangruem was strong this summer at various 7on7 tournaments and his continued growth and development will be a b ig key this season for the Wildcats playoff chances in 2024.

Looking for a sleeper name to watch this fall for Normal West? Normal West senior RB/WR Cooper Temples is a speedy inside slot back who can and will also play running back as well for the Wildcats. Look for Temples to draw more recruiting looks and attention this summer and fall.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Normal West Wildcats

Normal West and head coach Nathan Pincham is looking to improve upon it's 9-2 season in 2023. The Wildcats posted a 8-1 regular season record in 2023, made the Class 6A state playoff field and beat Simeon then lost to East St. Louis to end thne season. Normal West head coach Nathan Pincham has posted a 45-15 record in 6 seasons and has led the Wildcats to the IHSA state playoffs in every season since taking over the job.

The biggest question facing Normal West this summer?

Can the Wildcats reload at several positions and remain at the top of the Big 12 conference in 2024. Normal West is no question a much younger team in 2024 and graduated a strong senior class this past spring. With just 7 returning starters back (3 offense 4 defense) we will see lots of new faces this summer. Look for Normal West to get things together later in the regular season as several new names gain game reps and look for the Wildcats to challenge again in the conference and also in 6A.

The latest on LWE Week 2

Again not a ton of inside scoopage here....East was indeed dropped by the Florida school.....leaving the Griffins with a Week 2 opening with literally a handful of weeks left. Timing was very interesting since the Florida school cancelled the game one day after Jonas Williams committed to Oregon. Anyway....

ESTL will not play LWE because they are on a contract with the team from Georgia and my understanding is they will not break that agreement....and that makes sense since the Classic always tries to attract OOS teams. Very doubtful LWE will find a game this quickly and my guess is LWE will seek a forfeit win since they had a contract in place and then was dropped at the last minute. ESTL had to do this a few years ago when a very similar situation happened. If I hear more I will post it here.

What is sad here is my guess is this leaves a bad taste for LWE and would be very surprised if they try to go this route again anytime soon. Hope I'm wrong on this as well but it's just a guess/hunch.

Wheaton North senior WR Rich Schilling (6-foot-3, 175 pounds) has impressive size, hands and the overall tools to draw increased recruiting attention this summer and fall.

Looking for a sleeper name to watch this fall for Wheaton North? Wheaton North senior OT Jonathan Hurst (6-foot-5, 250 pounds) has the frame and look of a linemen who could have a big 2024 season for the Falcons. Hurst is a locked on blocker who has the frame and wifth to add much more good weight and size at the next level.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Wheaton North Falcons

Wheaton North and head coach Joe Wardynski is looking to improve upon last seasons 7-4 record. The Falcons made the Class 7A state playoff field in 2023 and ost to Quincy in second round action. Wheaton North heasd coach Joe Wardynski has posted a 109-57 record in 16 seasons and has led the Falcons to the IHSA state playoffs in 10 seasons including winning the 7A state title in 2021.

The biggest question facing Wheaton North this summer?

Can the Flacons reload and keep winning in the always strong Dukane conference this season? Wheaton North graduated several key starters this past spring and will need to reload at the offensive skills along with the defensive line this summer. This program always seems to find a way to get it done and look for Wheaton North to again challenge in the Dukane conference then in Class 7A.

Impact Player for Centennial?

Centennial senior OLB Trevon Hall (6-foot-2, 230 pounds) is an impressive eyeball passing prospect who has a nice combination of size, strength and speed. Look for Hall to draw more recruiting looks this fall and Hall I feel has a chancer to play at a high level in college. .

Looking for a sleeper name to watch this fall for Centennial? Centennial senior QB Kellen Davis Foltz (6-foot-1, 195 pounds) is a two way starter who is drawing looks as a safety at the higher college level.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Centennial Chargers

Centennial and head coach Kyle Jackson will look to build upon it's 6-4 record in 2023 as the Chargers made the IHSA Class 6A state playoff field and lost to Crete-Monee in opening round action. Centennial head coach Kyle Jackson has posted an overall record of 20-22 in 5 seasons and has led the Chargers to the IHSA state playoff field for three straight seasons.

The biggest question facing Centennial this summer?

Can the Chargers reload at a handful of key positions this sumemr and keep winning and getting into the state playoff field? Centennial welcomes back a nice core of returning starters (6 offense 4 defense) including a handful of key impact players. If the Chargers can find replacements at a few key spots (RB/DL) they should be state playoff capable in 2024.

Good news coming tomorrow......

I'll be back doing some exclusive work for the Daily Herald this season and I'm very excited to be back with some great people who I had the pleasure working with before over the years. I'll have my first column out Monday and I'll cover a wide range of things this coming season including recruiting stories such.

I'll also be back for like my 50th season on WJOL with Coach Joe every Thursday night from 6-8PM during the football season.

Nothing yet from the TV side....but hoping to hear more over the next few weeks.

I still want to add a weekly podcast with more of a focus on state wide....also 3rd and Leng will be back this season.

More news to follow soon.
