West Aurora leaving SPC

Rick Armstrong (Beacon News) reported last night the West Aurora SD 129 School Board approved an invitation to return to the Upstate Eight. He also noted that Riverside-Brookfield, Elmwood Park and Ridgewood have also been invited. 14 members would likely split to two (2) divisions of seven (7) schools.

That leaves the Southwest Prairie Conference with 11 schools. Who should they get?

Impact Player for St.Edward:

The Green Wave and first year head coach Shane Finnnae will be in search of an improvement to it's 2022 2-7 regular season record. Senior RB/LB Jack Wright, who suffered a season ending injury last fall before the start of the season is expected to be back and to also be a key contributor on both sides of the football.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 St. Edward Green Wave:

St. Edward has a new head coach in former Green Wave alum Shane Finnane who takes over from longtime retired head coach Mike Rolando. .The Green Wave will also enter a new conference in 2023 in the Chicagoland Christian Conference which will hopefully bring some scheduling ease and balance to St. Edward and the rest of the smaller enrollment private schools that make up the conference.

The biggest question I see for St. Edward in 2023? Can the Green Wave get more from an experienced group of returning starters on both sides of the football? The Green Wave welcomes back 12 starters (6 offense 6 defense) but this was also a group that has seen limited success over the past few seasons. Another big key will be if the new staff can get out, recruiting the hallways and build up the overall football numbers. I see this team positing a 4-5/3-6 rtpe of season as the schedule ios stacked with several IHSA state playoff contending teams once again this fall.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

Impact Player for St. Laurence:

St. Laurence and head coach Adam Nissan welcomes back an experienced team for the 2023 season who will be asked to play large roles this fall. Senior to be OL Jack McGeehan (6-foot-4, 265 pounds) is a name to watch in recruiting circles this spring and summer. McGeehan will be one of four starters back on the Vikings offensive line and if St. Laurence is going to find a way back to the IHSA state playoffs for the first time since 2019...look for McGeehan to have a big season.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 St. Laurence Vikings:

St. Laurence is coming off a 3-6 record in 2022 after the Vikings ran into a buzzsaw and lost it's last four regular season games to end the season. Look for St Laurence to bounce back this fall yet as always the schedule remains stacked for the Vikings again in 2023 including games against Wheaton St. Francis, Providence Catholic plus St. Rita as crossover games this fall.

The biggest question I see for St. Laurence in 2023? Can the Vikings find it's path to at least 5 wins in the regular season? Again the regular season schedule here is no joke at all and getting off to a good early start will be critical in my opinion. With 13 returning starters back (8 offense 5 defense) this team should be able to reload at a few key spots (QB/DL) and win games this fall. I'll say the Vikings find a way to 5 wins and a state playoff bid this coming playoff season.

OL Quienton Rowher 2025

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

University of Illinois 6/15

Impact Player for Quincy:

Quincy and head coach Rick Little welcomes back a deep and experiences team with also the program's best talent level in years. Quincy will rely on a few underclassmen names on the rise in junior QB Bradyn Little along with junior WR Jeriaus Rice. Little, the son of head coach Rick Little posted a strong 2022 season and is in line for an even bigger season this fall. Rice, who has impressive ball skills, size and speed will also be one of several key target in the Blue Devils spread offense in 2023.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Quincy Blue Devils:

Quincy and head coach Rick Little had a nice 2022 season and the Blue Devils no question became the talk of Western Big 6 fans all over the western part of the state. Quincy posted a 8-3 record in 2022 including a 7-2 regular season record. Quincy made the 2022 IHSAClass 6A state playoff field, defeated Glenwood then lost to Lemont in second round action.

The biggest question I see for Quincy in 2023? Can the Blue Devils get wins and get past the highest level teams in both the Western Big 6 (Moline/Sterling) as well as in Class 6A (East St Louis/Lemont/Fox Valley teams)? Quincy will have an offense loaded with skills, speed and experience and is a unit that can hang with everyone in 6A, and if the defense can raise it's game this team has the makings of a real sleeper pick in 2023. I'll say the Blue Devils wind up with a 8-1/7-2 record and then makes a deeper run in Class 6A this fall.

Impact Player for Richmond Burton:

Richmond Burton isn't exactly known for developing major receivers and/or a passing game over the years, but senior WR Max Loveall could very well be the best overall athlete and football player on the Rockets roster for this coming season. Loveall has impressive size length and physical tools and has drawn solid recruiting looks and attention this spring at the higher college level.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Richmond Burton Rockets:

One of the best success stories over the past handful years has been the high level success at Richmond Burton under Hall of Fame head coach Mike Noll. The Rockets have been a successful and winning program for years under Hall of Fame head coach Pat Elder, yet the Richmond Burton program has reached higher under Mike Noll. Noll has led the Rockets to the IHSA state quarterfinals or higher in the past four seasons. The Rockets finished 11-2 in 2022, won the Kishwaukee River conference title with an undefeated 9-0 record. Richmond Burton made the 2022 Class 4A and defeated Ridgewood and Urban Prep Bronzeville then lost to Providence Catholic in quarterfinal round.

The biggest question I see for Richmond Burton in 2023? Can the Rockets reload and replace some key graduated players from a season ago? The Rockets always have talent and numbers and will be again at the top of the Kishwaukee River race, but can they find some key answers this summer and continue to be a Class 4A state title contender? The Rockets will look to fill holes at some key positions (QB/RB/OL/DL) and despite those question marks this summer look for thew Rockets to again be a top team to watch in Class 4A in 2023. I'll predict a 9-0 regular season record for Richmond Burton and they will also make another deep post-season tun in 2023.

Small school conference moves

Morrison will leave the Three Rivers to head to the NUIC in 2024. That will put them back in the same conference with rival Fulton, putting the Wooden Shoe game back on the menu.
NUIC will now be a closed conference with no need to schedule non-conference games.

Back at the end of April, Mercer Country elected to join the Three Rivers for 2024 season, leaving the Lincoln Trail. Lincoln Trail is in an odd spot now with 11 members.

My Take: JCA 2024 DT Dillan Johnson to Northwestern

Today Joliet Catholic Academy 3 star ranked DT Dillan Johnson gave Northwestern his verbal commitment. Johnson, who made an official visit to Northwestern this past weekend decided to accept an offer from the Wildcats after drawing multiple Power 5 interest and offers from the likes of Wisconsin and others. Johnson had an official visit set for Wisconsin in early June and many observers pointed towards the Badgers as a favorite. Johnson, who is also a two time state wrestling champion also was drawing a ton of interest and offers as a wrestler in college. One of the bigger questions I had for Dillan and his recruiting process was what sport would he chose....and up until recently I was say 50-50 between football and wrestling.

I've seen Dillan Johnson play live a handful of times over the past few seasons and I have a pretty good feel on him and his game. I've also gotten to know Johnson and his family over the last few years and I was able to cover his older brothers when they went thru the recruiting process. Johnson comes from a terrific, hard working family who value education highly so seeing Dillan Johnson landing at Northwestern just makes a lot of sense from the family mindset and standpoint.

So what is Northwestern getting in Dillan Johnson. Johnson is a high level athlete who has impressive speed, quickness and technique who will no question be very difficult to block at times especially at the high school level. Johnson, who has exceptional bend and leverage, way above quick hands and feet along with also possessing great strength and power can and will use his advanced technique to get past, around or through opposing offensive linemen. In all honesty, early on in his recruiting process I felt that Johnson in many ways could have also been a highly effective offensive center at the higher level. I still feel Dillan has the tools and ability to make the switch to either side of the line if needed. Johnson also brings a big blue collar/lunch bucket approach and mentality to the field along with an impressive intellect.

Room to improve? Johnson has always been a consistently strong player and a steady mainstay on the Hilltoppers defensive line.....yet I've also wanted to see him be able to take over a game at times which I didn't see much of when I've seen him in person. Johnson is also listed as 6-foot-2 285 pounds in the Rivals database but my guess is he's more closer to 6-foot-0, 285 pounds. His lack of ideal size and measureables no question has impacted his overall rankings here. Can Johnson handle the down in and down out pounding and punishment he will take inside on the defensive line from Big 10 sized offensive linemen?

Rivals currently has Dillan Johnson as a mid 3 star ranked name....and in many ways I'm on board with that ranking as well...at least for now. I'm also well aware that Johnson comes from a great family, a family with impressive athletic bloodlines. Johnson's older brothers have all had late growth spurts in college (Eric II Indianapolis Colts and Marcellus Johnson/Missouri) and if that's the case with Dillan than look out! So I'm also more than a bit gun shy with the mid 3 star ranking as well :)

Off the field? Dillan Johnson again comes from a hard working family and is a terrific young man with an impressive academic and athletic background who will be a great locker room addition.

Who Stood Out: The Stage Camp at COD all positions

This annual event was held again at College of DuPage on Tuesday night and one of the many reasons my partners and I like this camp is that it's held in the middle of the spring evaluation period. College coaches from the FCS level and below are allowed to attend and we had our biggest turnout of coaches so far with over 50 coaches representing 35 schools. The overall numbers also set a new high mark (roughly 250 kids) and overall the weather was ideal.

Once again for the record...let me clarify for all here. I try to watch and see as many kids as I can at these showcase and camp events....but I've yet to be able to find a way to watch 250 plus kids in one spot at one time...and I can and will miss seeing some additional top names...but I'll keep trying my best to see as many kids as possible. Also when your name is on the billing it pulls me away in a million different directions at times. I rely pretty heavily on feedback from my positional coaches and media aka people who I trust here along with my own in person evals. I've said this before and will again....the hardest thing for me to do is get a really good feel on the top kids at this event when I'm not 100 percent locked into it for multiple reasons. I will always do my best in these situations.

The Wide Receiver position was by far the largest position group at this event and also one of the most talented.

So Who Stood Out The Quarterbacks

So Who Stood Out: The Running Backs/Tight Ends

So Who Stood Out: OL/DL

Defensive Backs

#700 DB Tai Sesta Joliet Catholic 2024
- Had a very solid day here in my opinion. Sesyta was strong in drill and positional work, tested and ran well and was willing to take as many reps as possible.

#707 DB Maksym Makota Maine West 2025- Highly impressive athlete who posted a 37 inch vertical along with being one of the top testers in this entire event regardless of position. Has a bit more to learn when it comes to his coverage skills but the raw physical tools are impressive no question.

#708 DB Elijah Romerus Fenwick 2024- Has higher college level talent and athletic ability in my opinion. Romerus also ran and tested well here, has a nice combination of good size and length while also being strong in deep ball coverage. Overall an impressive showing here and a name who will draw a lot of attention in college camps this summer.

#709 DB Julien Bey Palatine 2025- Speedy, twitchy athlete who's a bit smaller physically for the higher level college but who can and run with everyone and was a pest in coverage.

#715 DB Ethan Enriquez Nazareth Academy 2024- Ran and tested well and is also another smaller cover corner type who was very strong in one on ones.

Wide Receivers

#804 WR Finn Weppner Geneva 2025
- Speedy athlete who also showed to have great hands, ball skills and Weppner had a very solid overall day here.

#810 WR Aric Johnson Kaneland 2024- A well known name in recruiting circles already, Johnson was very solid here all day. Johnson ran good routes, flashed really good hands in traffic and just does a lot of things well. Colleges will want to see him live this summer and I feel he has FCS ability.

#812 WR Maurice Davis Mount Carmel 2024- Davis is another camp regular who is just a consistently strong player. Davis ran and tested pretty well, has good hands and is always willing to take as many reps as possible.

#813 WR Quinn Morris Plainfield East 2025- Still a bit of a work in progress from a size/strength standpoint, but his hands, ability to use his body to shield away the defender and his sheer talent to win deep balls in traffic is impressive. Morris I feel is getting better and better each time I see him live.

#816 WR Matt Kucjaz Wheaton North 2024- I've seen Matt a few times now and he's another very steady receiver who also runs good routes, has good hands and just goes and gets the football. Kucjaz I feel will be a kid who will fare well in one day camps this summer and should be able to boost his overall recruiting stock.

#820 WR Jake Cestone Nazareth Academy 2025- Keep an eye on this kid for the Class of 2025. Cestone has decent size, ran and tested really well and while he still has work to do in his ball skills, knowledge level and experience level his physical tools are already really noticeable.

#844 WR Cameran Banks Hillcrest 2024- Banks is another name to watch who has good length, did well in one on ones and also ran and tested well. Banks is still in need of adding more weight and strength, but his speed and raw tools and upside caught my attention.

#846 WR Jerrell Benson Lincoln Park 2025- Another speedy kid from the CPL who is still physically a work in progress from a weight room standpoint. However, Benson posted a 33 inch vertical jump and also ran a strong 40.

#851 WR Jack Grigus Lyons Township 2025- Grigus just seemed to catch everything thrown his way, ran and tested pretty well and was noted by the coaches as one of the better kids they worked with here.

#861 WR Torrey French Carmel Catholic 2024- I've been a fan of Torrey's for a year plus now and he showed me why again here. French ran a top level 40 yard dash, has a great mix of speed, wiggle and power and could be a higher level slot at the college level. Had a very impressive day here.

#862 WR George Dimopoulous Crystal Lake Central 2024 Class of 2024 name to watch here no doubt. George has impressive size (6-foot-2, 180 pounds) who showed really good strength, speed and quickness in drill and positional work. Dimopoulous also posted a 36 inch vertical jump and he's a name on the rise this summer.

#863 WR DJ Brooks Simeon 2024 Speedy receiver who has a nice combination of size and strength along with good speed and hands.

#872 WR Luke Mailander York 2024- As consistent as they come here. Luke Mailander is always working hard, always hustling and always just making plays. Mailander also ran and tested well and he's another name who could see his stock rise on college camps this summer.

#876 WR Blaise LaVista Libertyville 2025 Another impressive underclassmen name to remember. LaVista (how cool of a name is Blaise LaVista for a receiver?) also has good size (6-foot-1, 183 pounds) along with impressive ball skills, hands and upside. I can see LaVistta growing into a higher level tight end at the higher level in college football.

Rumor Has It......

Hearing even more rumblings about several potential upcoming conference changes and I'm hearing more and more involvement and discussion regarding teams from the SW Prairie, DVC, West Suburban plus the SW Suburban among others. Wild.....wild stuff and a lot of pieces need to fall but this is easily the loudest rumblings I've heard regarding potential conference shakeups I can ever remember..also of note if and when these go down I'm hearing it won't officially happen until 2024 at minimum.

Impact Player for Bishop McNamara:

Bishop McNamara senior RB/DE Jaydon Wright (6-foot-0, 225 pounds) who is already verbally committed to Minnesota is a big back who runs with exceptional power and speed. Wright has been the Bishop mac main go to guy over the last year plus and will again be asked to carry a large portion of the Fighting Irish offensive production in 2023.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Bishop McNamara Fighting Irish:

Bishop McNamara and first year head coach Bob Kelly takes over the Fighting Irish program which posted a 3-6 overall record in 2022. The Fighting Irish have been a traditional power for decades under long time Hall of Fame head coach Rich Zinnani and besides having a new head coach, the program will also join a new conference in 2023 in the Chicago Christian Conference. The CCC will include the Fighting Irish along with Aurora Christian, Chicago Christian, Chicago Hope Academy, Christ The King plus Marian Central Catholic, St Edward, Timothy Christian and Wheaton Academy.

The biggest question I see for Bishop McNamara in 2023? Can the Fighting Irish reload and get back to it's winning was this fall after a rare sub .500 record in 2022? The schedule in 2023 for Bishop Mac is solid yet also not the murders row they faced in 2022 which will be a positive. I'm looking for a bounce back season for Bishop McNamara and I can see them as a 6-3/5-4 caliber team in 2023 and getting back into the IHSA state playoff field.

Impact Player for Forreston:

Forreston is always loaded with impressive running backs who run hard. can and will run over opposing defenders and this position group also knows where the weight room is as well as the track. Senior TB Kaleb Sanders was one of the Cardinals top rushers in 2022 and with the graduation loss of RB Johnny Kobler I expect Kaleb Sanders to be the lead back in an always deep and balanced Forreston backfield in 2023.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Forreston Cardinals:

Forreston and head coach Keynon Janicke had an up and down 2022 season as the Cardinals posted a 5-4 regular season record, including two late regular season losses to Fulton (Week 7) and eventual Class 1A state champion Lena Winslow (Week 9). The Cardinals however got things in gear in the post-season and made it to the Class 1A quarterfinal round. Forreston made the 2022 Class 1A state playoff field and defeated St. bede, Hope Academy and Dakota before losing to NUIC rival Lena Winslow to end the 2022 season.

The biggest question I see for Forreston in 2023? Can the Cardinals reload and close the gap between themselves and you know who at the top of the NUIC conference as well as being the top dog in Class 1A? Forreston welcomes back an impressive 14 returning starters including 8 starters back on defense. I can see Forreston again being at the very top of the conference race and could go 9-0/8-1 this coming regular season.

Who Stood Out: The Stage Camp at COD The OL/DL

So Who Stood Out The Quarterbacks

So Who Stood Out: The Running Backs/Tight Ends

Offensive Linemen

#0 OL Drew Jennings Naperville North 2024 More of a center/guard just does some things really well here including handling his business in one on ones. Athletic kid with a good base.

#1 OL Danny Zarco Lyons Township 2024- Danny Zarco is a camp regular who has pretty much shown his upside and ability over the past few years now. Zarco has a non stop motor, plays with a major chip at all times and is always on the attack. Zarco I feel will also get some looks later this summer and early fall as a possible DL and he has the athletic ability to play on either side of the football. Zarco will continue to add good size and strength over the next year plus and was consistently the best of this position group in my opinion.

#2 OL Alex Poholik Mount Carmel 2024- Alex Poholik has worked hard, is a non stop worker who has no question raised his game. He is another interior OL who has very good feet and base who also has good balance along with being able to cut off the outside rush pretty consistently. Poholik also showed good, consistent hand usage, showed a good consistent punch and overall was just very solid and consistent here.

#11 OL Jack Donovan St Francis 2024- I've seen Jack Donovan play live last season so I already had a good idea about him. Donovan, who plays center for the Spartans has gotten a bit bigger and stronger and he's just another very good all around linemen who will also fare well I believe this summer in college camps. Donovan will need to continue on improving his overall feet/quickness but he's made some marked improvements already compared to a season ago.

Defensive Linemen

#103 DL Tyler Fortis Maine South 2024- Tyler Fortis is also a regular on the camp showcase circuit and you'll always get a workman like effort from him. Fortis is advanced from a technique standpoint, uses his size and strength well and also has a decent amount of pass rush moves. His ability to consistently get past an opposing lineman and upfield was again impressive here. Also always played with high energy and a non stop motor.

#105 DL Jack Anderson Glenbard South 2024- Jack Anderson was also pretty solid here and he's another two way starter who decided to work on the defensive line at this event. Anderson was again solid here and was able to make the most of his reps in one on one along with showing good overall skill in various positional drill work.

#109 DL Filip Rolak Palatine 2024- Had a very good say here and caught the attention of several FCS schools in attendance. Rolak has good size and strength, also has impressive quickness, first few steps and also showed very good bend and used his leverage well in one on ones. Rolak has FCS level physical ability and tools and I can see him adding more offers later this spring and summer.

#125 DL Donovan Howard Naperville North 2025 A younger guy here and a name to watch. Has very good size and physical tools, was able to make some nice plays in one on ones and while he still has work to do.....he's got a lot to offer and some definitely upside in my opinion.

#127 DL Saif Kokoszak Glenbard South 2025- A quick as heck DE/OLB type here whop won the Marines Semper Fi Award for his overall work ethic, attitude and effort. Saif has good length and quickness, has a bit of twitch and was consistently strong in one on ones. Kokoszak still has room to grow and will add much more weight and strength over the next year plus and he could become a really nice addition to the FCS/D2 level. I like Saif's overall upside and potential here.

#131 DL Lauter Landon Glenbrook North 2024 Still a very young and raw player who has only played football for just over a year now. Has eye opening size and physical tools and I can see several schools keep Landon on their radar screen this fall. Once Landon gets more in game playing time and reps his game will grow and improve and so will his college options. His inexperience is an issue but he's also a hard working kid who will end up closing that gap quicker than most kids.

#139 DL Ethan Aghakhan Stevenson 2024- Ethan night be my bigger eye opening performer from this event. Aghakhan has very good overall size and tools, has a nice combination of muscle, quickness and has added more and more to his bag of pass rushing moves. Aghakhan was also very good in one on ones, kept coming back for more and more reps and was just a very difficult matchup here. The added strength along with his overall improvement to his game was impressive here.

#140 DL Devan Van Ness Barrington 2024 - I've been watching Devan I think since his freshman year and he is always very good at these events. Van Ness has very good speed and quickness, and also has good strength and just never backs down from bigger opposing offensive linemen. Yet the biggest issue for Van Ness with recruiting will be his overall size. I'd love to see schools take a look at Devan at linebacker....where I feel at least physically he's a much better fit at the next level. Regardless, Devan Van Ness will be an impact player where ever you put him on the field.

Impact Player for Havana:

Havana head coach Kolton Hammond Hammond has a handful of returning two way starters back for thr 2023 season who will be asked to provide major leadership and production this fall. Keep an eye on senior OL/DL McGuire Martindale who is a two way senior starter who will be asked to play at a very high level on both sides of the football this fall.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Havana Ducks:

Havana head coach Kolton Hammond was able to take the Ducks program over in 2022 and was able to make progress in his first season. Havana wound up positing a 4-5 record in 2022 and just missed out on the 2022 IHSA state playoff field. The program improved from a 1-8 record in 2021 to 4-5 in 2022 and welcome back a nice core of returning starters for the 2023 season.

The biggest question I see for Havana in 2023? Can the Ducks raise it's overall game and level of play and contend against the higher profile programs on the schedule in 2023? The Ducks have a good chance at becoming a nice sleeper team to watch in 2023 and I can see them wind up as a 6-3/5-4 caliber team.

So Who Stood Out The Quarterbacks

Running Backs

#403 RB Niko Kokosoulis Maine South 2026- Played at the sophomore level last season and follows in the footsteps of his older brother Fotis who also was an impressive speed back for Maine South. Kokosioulis has good speed/quickness and is a shifty open field runner and very good speed. Size will be an issue for higher level schools and recruiting....but this is a fun name to watch over the next few years.

#407 RB Walker Owens Wheaton North 2024- Very good overall athlete here who I can see playing at a few different positions at the next level. Walker has good size, runs well and was very good in various position and drill work.

#416 RB Carter London Glenbard South 2024- A steady every down back who seems to have gotten a bit stronger along with improving his overall speed this off season. Will be one of several weapons back in 2023 for the Titans and a big factor in the Glenbard South backfield.

#420 RB Ty Ransom Wheaton St. Francis 2025- Easily the most impressive running back at this event in my opinion. Ransom has impressive size and runs with a great combination of speed, quickness and power. Ransom played at the sophomore level in 2022 and he sure looks like he is ready to make a big jump up this fall for the Spartans and no question this is a name to watch in the 2025 class. .

#421 RB Jedidiah Adjayl Evergreen Park 2024- Another very solid running back here who has nice speed and quickness, also has good power and his ability to start and stop on a dime was noticeable here.

Tight Ends

#201 TE Jack Berger Deerfield 2025- Impressive sized kid here who will showed to have good hands and ball skills. Also has the frame to add even more good weight and size over the next year plus. I'm very interested to see how Berger early season video looks like this fall

#202 TE Jimmy Zarco Lyons Township 2025- Jimmy Zarco is another camp regular who always comes out and competes hard. Zarco is only a sophomore yet he already has pretty good hands, runs good routes and never backs down from a challenge. He's also starting to add more good weight and strength and whether at receiver or tight end he has a chance to develop into a higher level name to watch here. Zarco is also playing with much more confidence these days.

#204 TE Carson Jacoby Minooka 2024- It's always wild to see a kid from my own home area that I didn't know a ton about show up and show out at my own camp lol. Carson Jacoby has good size and overall is physically advanced kid who was able to make some nice catches in one on ones and who also was coachable in drill work. Jacoby also has the ability to play either as a West Coast style of tight end yet also can and will be a willing blocker and support the run game. Just a lot to like here,

Illinois prep football on the upswing?

This is just a list of how many gridders who played high school ball in Illinois have been drafted by an nfl team in recent years. Yes, there's a difference between being the first guy picked and the Mr. Irrelevant pick, but this is just numbers.
2023 (last month) --- 12 Illinois preps were picked in. 7 rounds. Florida (36), Texas (33), Georgia (23) and California (21) were top four states.
2022 --- 6 Illinois preps were picked. Texas (32),Georgia (30), California (22) and Florida (21) were the top four.,
2021 ---Note: this was draft after season was covid-19'd. 3 Illinois preps were picked. Florida (37), Texas (33), Georgia (21) and California (19) were the top four.
2020 --- 4 Illinois preps were picked. Texas (33), California (23), Florida (22) and Georgia (21) were the top four.
2019 --- 9 Illinois preps were picked.Florida (34), Texas (27), California (22) and Ohio (14) were the top four.
2018 --- 5 Illinois preps were picked. Florida (36), Texas (28), California (27) and Virginia (15) were top four.

And while none of us are even remotely shocked that Florida, Texas, California and Georgia are the country's football hotbeds, There's not exactly a 1-to-1 relationship between state population and number of high school football players drafted in any given year.
If you're scoring at home, in these past six years, New York has consistently been the second-most populous state in the USA. In that span, an even dozen New York high school grads were drafted by an NFL team.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 New Trier Trevians:

New Trier and head coach Brian Doll finished the 2022 regular season with a 4-5 record and missed out making the IHSA state football playoff field. However, the Trevians would up being granted a forfeit win over Maine South after the Hawks were found to have self reported residency violations which places them with a final 2022 record of 5-4.

The biggest question I see for New Trier in 2023? Can the Trevians get back to it's winning ways in 2023 and make a strong run in the always rough Central Suburban South conference along with in Class 8A? I'm looking for a much better season this fall for New Trier. The Trevians played a young team last season and with 17 returning starters back this summer this program looks to be in line for a better run. However, the Trevians non conference schedule is stacked and includes Hersey, Yorkville, Prospect and Barrington all within the first four weeks of the regular season. Week 5? New Trier will then host Maine South to open up CSL South conference play. I'll say New Trier finds a way and finishes with a 5-4 overall regular season record and gets into the 2023 IHSA state playoff field.

I will always do my best in these situations.

So Who Stood Out The Quarterbacks

#504 QB Brady Palmer St. Francis 2026- This was my first time seeing Brady Palmer throw in person and he was really impressive here. Palmer has a terrific arm and touch, has good overall sizxe and will continue to get bigger and stronger over the next few years. Palmer has a chance to develop into a major name to watch over the next few seasons and his makeup, physical upside and potential is really strong for a younger kid here.

#505 QB Nate Lang Lisle 2027- Another young kid with really good size and physical tools. Lang threw the ball pretty well, showed decent accuracy and touch and was noted by a few of the coaches as one of the better overall performers who picked up on instruction quickly.

#506 QB Jack DiFillppis Maine South 2025- Yet another highly polished quarterbacks from the Maine South offensive factory. DiFillppis has an impressive arm, was strong in both drill work and in one on ones and just has a high knowledge level.

#509 QB Michael Champagne Glenbard South 2024- I've been watching Michael since he was in grade school and his game has done nothing but get better every time I see him live. Champagne, who added an offer from this camp from UW Platteville just does a lot of things well, has legit arm strength and touch and just always put the football where it needs to be and on time as well regardless of who's catching the football.

#511 QB Matthew Lee Loyola Academy 2027- Another young talented signal caller at such a young age. Lee has been sneaking into my camps a few different times now and the only way you can tell he's a younger guy is his face and he still looks like a young guy. Otherwise? Lee has impressive size, height and just does everything well throwing the football in this camp. Is as polished and as calm under duress as any QB at this camp.

#901 QB Matthew Plumb St Charles North 2026- Matthew is the younger brother of Ethan Plumb and the question I'ver had since seeing the Plumb brothers at a Throw It Deep passing session as grade schoolers is what will STCN do with two high level quarterbacks? Matthew has so many similar tools and attributes as hif older brother whiloe also beinbg a year younger. Has a real chance to become a highly sought after name in the Class of 2026 both regionally and nationally.

#902 QB Ethan Plumb St. Charles North 2025- It's time. It's time for Ethan Plumb to let his game and his ability shine this fall. Ethan is bigger, stronger and just more physically ready and in my opinion has Power 5 ability. Plumb had some ups and down in 2022, had to battle a senior all season long for playing time and that lesson and growth from it should benefit him this fall. I'm excited to see his early season video this fall....along with pretty much every college coach as well.

#907 QB Jack Elliott Chicago Mt. Carmel 2025- Another impressive quarterback who really just needs to be full time in the starters seat this fall. Elliott did see some decent playing time last year so he's not totally green.....and his overall arm, touch and feel along with being a very accurate passer who will also be a big time threat as well with the run when needed. Has a chance to become a big time player and recruit for the next two seasons.

#908 QB Arthur Palicki Willowbrook 2024- Palicki remains a bit of a mystery to me and in my opinion this is a quarterback with a ton of upside and potential who is still available. Palicki has impressive major level sixe, throws a good football and can make all the throws. Palicki also has cut some with this off season, looks leaner and quicker with an eye at becoming much more mobile this fall. Palicki has a chance to become a real steal this summer and I still feel would be a monster get for the FCS level.

#915 QB Jacob Bell Naperville North 2025- Another 2025 QB who has everything in order and all he really needs is full time action under center. Jacob Bell is a physically advanced quarterback and athlete who has a great arm with touch, tested well and is a high D1 level athlete in my opinion. This was the first time I was really able to watch and zero in on Jacob Bell in person and he will be the second straight Power 5 quarterback out of Naperville North.

#917 QB Patrick Heneghan New Trier 2024- Very solid quarterback and player here. Patrick is just does a lot of things well here including being able to get rid of the football quickly while also making good throws and ball placement.

#920 QB Diego Gutierrez Riverside-Brookfield 2024- Diego is another kid who has been on the camp circuit for quite some time. Gutierrez has gotten bigger and stronger especially over the past year, he already had a lot to offer as a passer and it sure looks like it's all coming together for him. I have no dounbt he will be playing next fall on Saturday.
