I'm sorry for sounding like a Smart-a##, but isn't being able to grind out a final winning drive in a Championship game, the absolute best Textbook definition of Discipline & penalty free football?

I do understand what you meant though, ESL didn't suffer a lot of unnecessary penalties against CG.

Providence Catholic senior safety Gavin Hagen (6-foot-1, 195 pounds) is a talented and hard hitting defender as well as a leader for the Celtics this season. Hagen, who has been on several recruiting radar screens this summer has a chance to develop into a high level player in my opinion. In many ways Hagen reminds me of former Marist and now Iowa S John Nestor.

Looking for a sleeper name to watch for Providence Catholic? Providence Catholic junior RB Xavier Coleman (6-foot-2, 200 pounds) is a big. strong and very athletic play maker who looks ready for a major breakout season in 2024.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Providence Catholic Celtics

Provid3nc3 Catholic and headn coach Tyler Plantz is looking to improve upon the Celtics 8-5 season in 2023. The Celtics in 2023 made the Class 6A state playoff field and defeated Morton, Hillcrest and Highland before losing to JCA in the Class 5A quarterfinals. Head coach Tyler Plantz has posted a 17-10 record entering his third season this fall as the Celtics head coach.

The biggest question facing Providence Catholic this summer?


Can the Celtics take the next few huge steps and win a state title in 2024? Providence Catholic welcomes back an abundance of talent for the 2024 season both at the cvarsity level as well as in the lower levels. Providence played a ton of underclassmen in 2023 (17 returning starters) and has a starting lineup that has deep varsity experience including post-season experience. Look for the Celtics to be one of the top teams in 5A/6A this season.

I watched almost all of the two Cary Grove-East St Louis championship games. I don't remember penalties playing a much of a role in the outcomes. I know the Flyers can have issues with personal fouls but thought both games were pretty clean. Last year, I think the Flyers had to play a Freshman QB much of the 2nd half because of an injury to Battle. I think that and Cary Grove's ability to grind out that last drive was more of a factor than penalties/discipline.

Talent is never an issue with EStL. Discipline is the issue. So many penalties are not called on ESt.L that should cripple them. That is coaching. Are they just inept and can't learn to play the game the correct way? Their talent lets them win games but if they have a bad game, TO's or terrible weather, that talent will not cover their mistakes and penalties.

Example: There is a very small private boarding school down the street from me that is lucky to put 25 players on the field each year. They start the season this week. It says they lost 31-0 last week which is not true. It says they have a robust roster of 48 which would be immaculate but the reality sadly is they only have 21 kids playing. Some of the kids listed are coaches!!!! This happens each year. I see it too with people reporting scores with CPS games for example.
