IHSA surveying schools for playoff expansion

In 2026 a 9 week season and 6 weeks of playoffs that end thanksgiving weekend means the first Friday of games is Aug 14 which means practice starts when? and your scrimmage or intrasquard showcase is Friday Aug 7.
Clearly the only possible plan with 8 classes snd playoff expansion is the dreaded 8 game season with week 9 playoff byes for the top seeded teams in each class.
Which means of course that the top teams will play 8 regular games and 5 playoff games to win a state title which is less football for the truly elite teams than they get now with 9 games and 5 playoff games.
And please do not say to run the state championship weekend in December. This is not about weather, it’s about illinois state university in school session in December and from strictly erring on the side of caution.
The ihsa will never allow high school kids to be on college campus with college kids unsupervised potentially wandering around a big campus. That situation is one tragedy away from ending fans attending the state finals.
So if you want expanded playoffs you are getting one less game for the top seeded teams that will get first round byes.
Either that or practice starts in late July.

It will be an 8-week regular season. Week 9 will be the first round of playoffs which will soon be know as "Puke Week" because I can't wait to see a 4-4 team play an 0-8 team.

I could be completely wrong about this, but multiple veteran CPL coaches and sports admin types have told me over the years that those schools are left out of the playoffs as a trade-off for CPS getting to keep the Prep Bowl. Let us keep the Prep Bowl and the CPL Playoffs, and we won't allow a lot of those lower performing teams to qualify for the state playoffs. Most CPL coaches want everyone to be in the playoffs, which is why there was a CPL Conference reorg a couple years ago which really upped the amount of IHSA playoff eligible teams.

You are correct. The kicker is that the same schools not eligible for the state playoffs rarely play in the city playoffs. Why CPL does not have city championships for their lower league teams will always baffle me. I imagine winning the CPL Division 2 or 3 City Championship would mean something to those kids.
