Woodstock Girls BB Team is a Disgrace

Disgusting display by Woodstock High School's Girls Basketball team that affixed a Barbie doll to a Crucifix after defeating Marion Catholic in the regional tourney.

I say they are disqualified, if I had a say.

Who the Hell do they think they are???

I took away two things from this picture:

1- That we live in a world where kids are being raised to think that this type of things is funny

2- That we live in a world where we are more worried about offending others than offending God.

A symbol of "girl power" is NOT manifest in a Barbie doll affixed to a Crucifix. Why not print a t-shirt? Who took this picture? Did the team's coach? It's one thing to affix Barbie to a Crucifix; it is another to have the ENTIRE team standing in front of the ugly image, pointing and the entire team smiling.

It's no use soliciting the IHSA to act on this matter. In the IHSA's eyes, this is a harmless prank. If Woodstock H.S. had any real courage, they would suspend the coach. This is NOT good sportsmanship; acts such as this foment hatred.

I agree with everything you said. When you mention the picture don't forget to include the adult woman who was also in it making a complete ass out of herself. Gee, I wonder where the kids learned this? Believe me, the adults are behind this. Regretfully, there will be no suspensions and no apologies of any sort...or a half-assed one. But if they had insulted some other group there would be hell to pay.

I would be interested in hearing exactly how Woodstock HS is using this as a "learning experience for the program."

Specifically, what CONSEQUENCE (other than public scorn) is being meted out to the TEAM for this "inappropriate action" for which Woodstock HS is trying to apologize? I see where Woodstock HS lost their next game. Would anyone care to bet me that it wasn't because the team was benched and JV players were brought up? Assuming that Woodstock HS is serious about using this as a learning experience, it would seem to me that the very next game would have been the best possible opportunity to really put some teeth into the learning experience.

I have been to enough games to see endless crap behavior and language from the Catholic school coaches, parents and students.. Personally I don't care, but then don't come here crying when garbage like this is done either as you can't have it both ways.. worry about your own kitchens first!!

It's not what was done, it's about how it was handled, or more appropriately, not handled. As an alum of a private institution, it's ever so much more important for our student athletes to act like adults, and this message is clear in most instances. Also, what's good for the goose is good for the gander doesn't work here. It's the responsibility of any school to educate and churn out good citizens, not idiots. Woodstock fail here.

There are some things in life that could be called "absolutes." When it comes to high school sports and high school athletes I have always said, high school kids conduct themselves and play based on how they are coached. To me, the coaches and parents are most responsible here for this behavior. The kids are responsible too.

Try to also wrap your warped brain around the difference between classless chants made by student sections and what the Woodstock girls hoops team did, in their team uniform, moments after winning an IHSA regional title game.

The episode with the LA students uttering those words occurred, I believe, in the Spring of either 1999 or 2000 during a basketball game. I will not go back for confirmation on this as it has been the subject of conversation numerous times and has specifically emerged when an issue of poor sportsmanship appears on this forum.

I can re-call two specific instances in the past five years alone when both ramblin and I have chastised LA's students for their ugliness during the game. In both cases, one of which was during a thread regarding profane language used by LA and MS coaches captures on a mic during a playoff game, the two of us issued a sharp rebuke to "our own" for what transpired. Naturally, the thread I refer too spiraled out of control and the attacks swelled to include this incident at the playoff game. Neither of us sought refuge elsewhere by hiding and refusing to address what occurred among a sample of LA's student body.

I cannot re-call the specific phraseology ramblin used; however, he did and has vilified poor sportsmanship exhibited by LA's students and, when it occurs, among coaches also. My own personal view: I hold LA to a MUCH higher standard of conduct and am willing to re-emerge here if they fall short of my expectations.

As for Rice kids chanting Buckwheat, I have no idea what consequence was meted out in their case.
