Ok so as promised I'm going to first release a bunch to Top 5's via position. Again these are who I feel are the Top 5 recruits via each position. Please understand that these are not necessarily the Top 5 players per position. If you have any questions or need to understand better the differences feel free to post or email me anytime edgytim@edgytim.com I will run these out into a free story in a week or so, but in the meantime DO NOT release or republish on any social media whatsoever. Violating this request will automatically terminate your access to this board. Also note I'm basing position off of the Rivals.com database profiles...and if I feel someone could/should draw looks/offers at another spot I will make mention of it in the ranking.
Thanks
Top 5 Recruits Class of 2017: Interior Offensive Linemen
Overall Position Grade: C- As I've been saying for about a year now...the overall quality and depth of the offensive linemen class is down for the past two years now. The interior offensive linemen group has some very good kids at the top but once you get past the Top 5-8 the overall quality and in particular the depth of the position drops off greatly.
1. Kevin Jarvis Maine South (6-foot-5, 315 pounds)- Jarvis for me is simply the top overall offensive linemen in the Class of 2017 in Illinois. Jarvis plays with tremendous passion and intensity and has a non stop motor. Jarvis has added size and strength over the past few years and at times has been dominant both in games as well as at showcase events this off season. Jarvis also has decent mobility and bend and can pull when required. I also love how Jarvis can and will get to the next level of blocks and is a great finisher. Jarvis has also worked hard on improving his hands and has a top notch punch. You won't find too much to knock in Jarvis's overall game. Jarvis could improve his overall bend and flexibility yet it's not what I would consider as a major weakness.
My Guess on Kevin Jarvis College of Choice: Michigan State verbal commitment
2. Trevor Campbell Naperville Central (6-foot-5, 275 pounds)- Is listed as an offensive tackle in the Rivals database but was offered and recruited as an offensive guard. Campbell is another high level kid with a great overall game and who is also technically sound. Campbell shows terrific quickness and feet and is a load to handle when he pulls. Campbell also has terrific strength and punch and is another linemen who is advanced when it comes to using his hands. I also love how Campbell finishes and was simply one of the most consistently good down in and down out I saw live in 2015. Campbell also has good lower body strength and a great base with way above balance. I feel that Campbell has lower to middle Big Ten potential and no question is another steal for Western Michigan here. Campbell will need to continue to add size and strength at the next level yet is a kid who I have a feeling will be college ready sooner rather than later.
My Guess on Trevor Campbell College of Choice: Western Michigan verbal commit
3. John Michael-Schmidt Homewood-Flossmoor (6-foot-4, 280 pounds)- John Michael Schmidt is yet another name from the always talent loaded H-F Vikings. Michael-Schmidt plays tackle for the Vikings but has the look, build and overall quickness to play interior offensive line at the high next level. JMS has very good feet and quickness. JMS is quick off the snap can get into an opposing defender and also has the overall power and leverage to win out in most match-ups. JMS also is a very strong finisher and along with his speed can easily get to the second level. JMS will need to add a bit more weight and strength for the college level yet has the frame/size to easily become a 290-300 pounds at the college level without losing much speed or quickness. JMS also uses his hands well, shows very solid all around technique. The spring will be important for JMS on many levels. I feel he has the potential to play at the Big 10 level and no question he will draw a lot of eyeballs.
My Guess on John Michael Schmidt College of Choice: Western Michigan/Indiana/Purdue
4. Kendrick Green Peoria (6-foot-4, 270 pounds)- I had a chance to watch the Peoria kids last post-season and Green is one of a handful of definite D1/1AA names to watch in the Class of 2017/2018 for Peoria. Green is a very athletic kid and just his overall size/speed and raw physical upside will draw more looks and offers. Green also plays tackle for the Lions but will play on the interior line at the college level. Green is still a bit raw and has work to do, especially when it comes to better overall bend and leverage yet his overall upside is impressive. Green also has good strength and more importantly the frame to add even more weight at the next level. Green is also a kid who could draw more looks at say DE but for the longer term I feel he's an interior linemen, Green is also off the field a terrific kid with good grades. Green has already added several MAC level offers. Greeen also runs more like a tight end than an interior linemen. Green has caught the eyes of some Big Ten schools but I feel he will need to camp well this summer to pull those type of offers.
My Guess on Kendrick Green College of Choice: Western Michigan/MAC schools/Illinois State
5. Nick Bart Barrington (6-foot-4, 280 pounds)- I've been a big fan of Nick Bart after I had a chance to see him up close at the EDGYTIM Showcase back in January. Bart is a good sized kid and has a nice combination of strength and power especially in his lower body. Bart also is a technically sound linemen who just does a lot of things well on video. Bart has good feet and moves pretty well and is another kid who seeks out trouble and knows what to do when he finds it (and yes that's a very good thing). Bart also was very solid in pass pro, uses his hands well and also has a very good punch. Bart will need to continue to improve his overall skill set and technique for the college level but I can also see this kid playing say OG or even OC at a very high level. Bart is one of say 5-7 kids with similar size and tape, yet what I feel will set him apart this summer in one day camps is his one on one abilities.
My Guess on Nick Bart College of Choice: MAC level or high FCS/Ivy League level schools
One Who Just Missed:
Jack Badovinac Loyola (6-foot-2, 265 pounds) Really liked Badovinac live in 2015. Badovinac, who just committed over the weekend to Colgate is again one of say 5-7 kids who has similar size/frame and look.Yet what separates Badovinac is his tape and overall game. I love his strength, speed and overall feet and balance. Colgate is getting a longer term answer on it's OL in Badovinac.
