The Upset Special - LF 21 BN 14

Not in IHSA football. It is the only sport that is not seeded by humans. Lake Forest played a much tougher schedule and had better wins
Ty!!!!! Just like the overrated schools of a certain conference.Richards looked like crap tonight

They always play a much tougher schedule. That's why they are so dangerous in 6A.

By the way this is the second straight week they've come back to win in the 4th quarter on a long touchdown pass.

Look at the opponents schedule. They beat 2 teams with winning records. One lost by a million tonight to Hershey. Lake Forest is a good team. If the football bracket was seeded by votes like all the other state tournaments, there is not a single person putting them as a 14 and their opponent from tonight at a 3.

Agreed.

I hate to admit it, but I have to agree. The Nic 10 is a very weak football conference. Look at what WWS did to Harlem tonight. I'm starting to re-think my high hopes for Boylan in 5a.

Boylan will be fine since the program is strong but the overall strength on the NIC 10 has to be pretty weak if Harlem won 7 games. The QB was a really nice player but outside of that they didn’t have much and their defense was atrocious. They do have really nice set up at their stadium one of the better visitor stands I’ve been to.

Closed conferences are so hard to gauge
They are hard to gauge, but there are two things that can provide insight. One thing is to look at recent playoff history, and the other is to look at computer ratings. The computer ratings also weight recent playoff results more heavily than the regular season, but they also can tell you how dominant a team has been within the conference during the current season.

The NIC-10 has not had a semifinal team since Boylan lost in the 6A semifinals in 2013. Prior to that Boylan won back-to-back state championships in 2010 and 2011. However, those Boylan teams were far more dominant within the conference than this year's team. It is revealing to note that no other team than Boylan, from the NIC-10, has made the semifinals since Belvidere in 2005. It is a weak football conference.

Turning to the computer ratings, the Massey ratings rank Rockford Boylan as the 60th best team in the state. They will romp over Hyde Park. Marmion is ranked 119th, Sycamore 17th, and Montini 16th. Therefore, Boylan should be able to defeat Marmion in the next round but is likely to lose in the quarterfinal round, as they did last year. A conference championship and (probable) exit in the quarterfinal round is a season to be very proud of.

Harlem's a better team than they showed last night, but still overmatched by WWS and the upper echelon of 7A teams

All good points you made. You're right about Boylan not being as dominant within the conference. One thing that is in their favor is that they're a 5a/6a fb school now, whereas their dominant years they were a 6a/7a school. Meaning that Nic 10 dominance might not mean as much since Boylan plays in a lower class now
