A very nice early commitment here for the NIU Huskies in Jalen K Johnson from Metea Valley.
Johnson is all arms and legs, has tremendous length, reach and he also has the frame to add even more good weight and size at the college level. Johnson was playing for Metea Valley and was generally pretty under the radar screen but began to draw notice at some 2020 fall camps (including my own camps with EFT last September) attention and has continued to draw looks.
Below is Johnson's spring video highlights.
Johnson has very good speed..and I feel better straight line speed than what he shows on his video highlights. We had Johnson pretty consistently in the 4.5/4.6 40 range at my camp in the fall. Johnson also played on a bad MV team this spring (that poor MV QB was under insane pressure on every throw) and once he's in a system that will allow him to develop more as a pass catcher I feel he has a chance to really grow and improve from here on out. Again the sheer physical tools and upside is there....Johnson will need to get a bit stronger and more improved in his overall route running and his hands...but his upside is there.
Star ranking? I would start Johnson as a low to mid 3 star kid to begin....and I'll be watching him closer this summer and early fall.
He is the type of under the radar name who could end up having break out potential in DeKalb over the next handful of years.
