Feels like a fun offseason topic. I have two favorites.

Larry Fitzgerald had more tackles than dropped passes in his career.

Ty Cobb would need to be resurrected and go 0 for 2,530 in order for his career batting average to drop below .300.

A true believer in taking one for the team, Don Baylor was hit by pitch 35 times in the 1986 MLB season (pre-elbow pads and ankle guards). That was more than the total number of HBP by 19 teams that year.

Anthony Rizzo current active player at #8 all time being hit by a pitch 222 times in his career. Total team player. If you’re a Cub fan you love Rizzo. 😊

Only two players have ever played in a NCAA Final Four and a World Series, both attended the same High School. Tim Stoddard played for NC State in 1974 and won the National Championship and pitched for the Baltimore Orioles World Champions and won a ring in 1983. He is now a pitching coach at North Central College in Naperville. Kenny Lofton reached the Final Four with the Arizona Wildcats in 1988 and played in two World Series one with Cleveland in 1995 and San Franciso in 2002. They both played baseball and basketball for East Chicago Washington High school in Indiana. Stoddard played for a State Championship team that is regarded as one of the best Indiana has known. 7 players on that team went on to play Div 1 basketball. In 1974 his Wolfpack team defeated UCLA who's point guard Pete Trogovich also played with him on the Senators in high school. Another player of note from Stoddard's HS team was Junior Bridgeman who played for Louisville and when he was later on the LA Lakers was involved in the trade for Karreem Jabbar to the Lakers from the Bucks.

Bridgeman was also a catalyst for athletes branching out into being moguls in the business world.
Despite never making more than $350,000 in a season, Bridgeman, who invested heavily in Wendy's and Chii's franchises, has a net worth of more than $600 million. He also is owner of Ebony and Jet magazines.

Last year the San Diego Padres became the only team in MLB history to turn a game ending triple play to clinch a post season spot.

Ronald Reagan was the only guy to do play-by-play for the Cubs, then become a Hollywood actor and finally became the 40th US President. LOL

When I ask this trivia question very few people get the correct answer. How many NFL head coaches have won the Super Bowl as a player and head coach? Most people say Mike Ditka right away. Fewer people say Tony Dungy and almost no one adds Tom Flores. Flores is a forgotten coach.

Shortstop, Don Kessinger had 7,651 official major league at bats and hit 14 homeruns. Pitcher, Don Drysdale had 1,169 official major league at bats and hit 29 homeruns. LOL

And Finally, the Cubs had the longest streak of avoiding a no hitter, going nearly 50 years before the Phillies' Cole Hamels threw one at them in 2015. The current streak is held by the Los Angeles Angels going back 25 years five months and 25 days according to nonohitters.com.

In the game where Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points, the notoriously poor free throw shooting center made 28 out of 32 free throws shooting them underhanded, like Rick Barry's "granny style". Wilt, never felt comfortable shooting them that way went on to use the standard method of shooting them the next season and went on to a lifetime average of 51.1 % ftm. He said he felt like a sissy shooting them underhanded.

The 2005 White Sox in the ALCS vs. the Angels had 4 consecutive complete game wins by their starting rotation after a loss in the opener in which the bullpen was only used for 2/3 of an inning.
The 2005 White Sox are one of only six teams in MLB history to go wire-to-wire in first place and win the World Series.

1927 Yankees
1955 Brooklyn Dodgers
1984 Tigers
1990 Red
2005 Sox
2024 LA Dodgers

His head or the case?

The head. But I don't think Williams was a headcase. He had suffered several strokes and wasn't in full possession of his faculties when the decision was made. According to Sports Illustrated, there were allegations of a forged signature.

Flores is a forgotten coach.

Not by me. I loved the Raiders when I lived in California.

The Pittsburgh Pirates (baseball), Steelers (football), and Penguins (hockey) all sport black and yellow as their primary colors.

That is true today. But the original Pittsburgh Penguins debut uniforms and team colors on 10/11/1967 for the 1967-68 season were dark blue, light blue and white. They didn't wear the gold and black until 01/30/1980 when they wore that uniform for the first time.

That is why you see their original colors when the wear their retro uniforms today.

I was speaking in general. I think Flores was an excellent coach. He coached some very good Oakland and LA Raiders teams. Resurrected Jim Plunkett's career. I would bet most people do not know he is in the HOF as a coach. And I would think if you ask the average football fan who won more Super Bowls with the Raiders, John Madden or Tom Flores, the majority of people would say Madden. Of course Madden was an excellent coach too.

Don't know it it's true anymore. But there was a period when RB Jim Kiick of the Dolphins was the only person in sports who had two consecutive ii's in his name.

Only one player DRAFTED out of Alabama has scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl. Devonta Smith, who caught a TD pass in Super Bowl LIX 10 days ago. (Note: technically speaking, Jalen Hurts was DRAFTED out of Oklahoma, where he completed his career after playing at Alabama first).

Joe Namath is the only NFL QB to win a Super Bowl whose career W-L record is below .500 and still make the Hall of Fame. The other two are Doug Williams and Matthew Stafford who both have won a SB and ended up with records below.500. Williams is not in the HOF and Stafford is still playing.

And, Joe Namath and Ken Stabler are the only two NFL QBs who won a Super Bowl, are in the HOF, but threw more interceptions than TD passes in their careers.
