In my own opinion, I think some stuff you should just be left alone. The prep bowl is not hurting anybody. It also gives us something to look forward to. Why would you propose something and you’re not even in the county city limits or the Chicagoland area?

I'm assuming they either want everyone to have the same opportunity or nobody to have it.

The other schools all can practice as long as the other games are going on. But no one does.

Read the posts on this board about the Prep Bowl almost no one mentions anything other than how it’s a great way to play underclassmen and get them ready for the next season. That is the reasoning for this new by law.

A fair compromise is that Prep Bowl should be limited to Seniors only so that no one is gaining a competitive advantage.

Laughable from the sycamore ad. This has nothing to do with competitive advantage and everything to do with cheap shot at Catholic schools. Don’t understand beef if teams want to play. And is it a bad thing to extend a few cps schools season for the kids on those teams? Not at all. Laughable proposal.

All..... Does the Ihsa get a monster cut of gate receipts like the regular playoffs. Or nothing. Maybe whoever proposed this wants the Ihsa to make a "sharing" deal. Who knows..... Ratsy

FWIW- It’s false that Fenwick went 3-6 in 2022, as stated in the Sycamore AD’s rationale.

They went 5-4 — season included a week 8 forfeit win over Marian Central Catholic.

Fenwick lost 14-6 to Morgan Park in the first round of the 5A playoffs, at Gately.

Friars then entered the Prep Bowl Playoffs and defeated D & Larry before losing to Simeon in Prep Bowl, which was played at Triton.

I'm sure they get something but the attendance to the Prep Bowl play in games is extremely small, especially with the visiting teams, pretty much just the parents, so they may make a a couple hundred bucks off it tops. The actual Prep Bowl Championship game brings in a moderate crowd at best. It's held normally the day after Thanksgiving so many have Turkey hangovers, it's the parents, so die hard alums who are football enthusiasts and a handful of students. This obviously differs from school to school but my point is the money the IHSA may make off the Prep Bowl gates is definitely in the three figure range.

I know this will never pass, but the fact that it even was proposed got my blood pressure up for a moment. I'll fully admit I'm not a huge fan of the game. Once the Championship game stopped being played at Soldier Field and it was bounced around between the teams home field that's when I felt a huge incentive for the players was gone and the game was going to die out.....but it hasn't. It's continued on because of tradition. While some schools bow out because their season was State or Bust, that's their right, but enough schools have always stepped up and used this game as an advantage for players to develop, some to get more film for College, teams to continue playing and practicing together, especially if their playoff run was unexpectedly short, and for some schools, as a recruiting tool. Some stary eyed grade school student sees you celebrating a Championship on Thanksgiving weekend and hoisting a trophy they see a winning program they may want to be a part of. This game should not be bothering anyone. It's tradition between two of the oldest conferences in the State. I hope this Sycamore person who proposed it email box is flooded with disapproving emails.

Am I mistaken or doesn’t every school have the right to practice until Thanksgiving weekend? I may be wrong but I think I remember this being discussed before. I think I remember hearing that most schools don’t practice to allow the athletes to recover and move on to winter sports.

Yes!!! I stated that & the other schools said well why would we do that? I said so since you don’t want to other schools shouldn’t?

Shameful, senseless proposal that will never pass
I wouldn’t assume that there are a ton of downstate schools that will vote for it and I would assume the suburban CCL teams that don’t participate in the Prep Bowl would also vote for this. Why would you give teams that you are going to teams you play against in your conference extra reps to improve. The real wild card is how CPS schools vote or if they even vote.

I propose an actual NIT type playoff of teams that are trying to build their programs. Throw them in a bracket together so they can have some games where they're not getting dominated from whistle to horn.

More not less. Some people lost the plot.

I just think most schools will realize there is no harm in this continuing and does not give a distinct advantage to the schools that participated in it the following season. These are schools that didn't qualify for the State Playoffs or had a first round loss. I just can't see a team in September saying they lost because their opponent played in a Prep Bowl game 9 months earlier and it gave them an advantage, I can't even imagine that would cross their mind to think that. I just think most schools won't see the harm in this and let the century old tradition continue.

It’s always about money. I am sure the IHSA doesn’t like it because they don’t get a cut of the gate, concessions etc. it’s weird that the Prep Bowl has been around forever and some how they decide this it the year to try to shut it down. I never cared for the Prep Bowl. That said I don’t have a problem with it being played because as others have said they grew up with it and it’s been tradition for some. I don’t like that the IHSA is trying to impose it will to shut it down.

It’s a huge advantage you are able to bring up underclassmen and incorporate them into your program while evaluating them. There is reason schools like LWE bring up kids for the playoffs when they don’t need the numbers at practice.

When was the last time a team competed in the prep bowl and made a deep run in the playoffs the next year.

St Laurence last year went 3-6 in 2022 advanced 2 weeks in the Prep Bowl then lost the State Championship in 2023. They have good chance to advance this year.

I’m sure there are more if I looked.

Im also assuming St Laurence wasn’t multiplied by 1.65 last year also. Also do we know that they were playing underclass men in the prep bowl

Last year BR didn’t play in the Prep Bowl and a bunch of BR/ CCL posters ripped their coaches for not using the Prep Bowl as a way to prepare for 2024. But now this those same posters at the threat of losing it say it’s no advantage. Which is it? Could you guys get your story straight?

Last week there were threads on this board saying the Prep Bowl is great to prepare underclass players for next year. The Sycamore Principal wrote a by law change that matches up with what CCL fans say on here. You can’t have it both ways.

I LOVE the Prep Bowl. The only changes I’d like is for ALL CPS teams to have a shot. Sure they may get blown out but so be it. If we could go back in time & this was actually done in 1979 but would have loved to see some good Joliet Catholic teams 1980 for example & Marian Catholic teams who were in the Illini 8 & then East Suburban Catholic & Independent have a shot at the Prep Bowl

Also the BR staff didn’t see it as an advantage so they didn’t play in the prep bowl. Writing a rule based on what a few fans say on a message board is crazy

‘If this is a big advantage why don’t the CPL teams have more success’

Exactly. They would benefit the most!
And, ironically, Sycamore will tune up a second CPL school in Round 2 — both being CPL teams that should have benefited from that competitive advantage from the opportunity to have competed in a Prep Bowl Playoff.

Once again this year, the CPL has andvanced only 5 of 26 teams to the 2nd Round in the State Playoffs. Only 1 of those 5 teams defeated a non-CPL school to advance (Morgan Park). No widespread success against anyone other than the CPL itself. Even #1-seeded Whitney Young (9-0) barely escaped #32-seeded Kenwood (4-5) with a 13-12 victory in one of the several CPL-CPL matchups.

The additional Prep Bowl experience does not seem to benefit the CPL schools one bit, thus rendering this a hollow argument.

For the purposes of this discussion, the CCL/ESCC playoff success is not widely driven by past Prep Bowl experience. There are exceptions, but many of those successful teams consistently advance without having participated in the Prep Bowl playoffs frequently or at all.

I’ve also discussed this before. A few years ago I chatted up some CPS higher ups at a game. They said when we talked about this very thing that if they get rid of the prep bowl the CPS will let all conferences & the teams in it be able to play in the state playoffs

It’s been 20 years but back when I was school age when our HS didn’t make the playoffs our coaching staff tried to line up a “JV championship game”. Our seniors season would end, but the sophs, juniors, and a few advanced freshman would practice an extra week and then play a week 10 game against whatever school we could get to agree to the arrangement.

We did this my sophomore year and I remember it getting me really excited about what our next varsity season/team would be like. Not sure the extra week of practice made any material difference but it was fun
