Final: SHG survives Waterloo 28-16

A few weeks back I was in a checkout line at Wal-Mart in Belleville behind a young man with a Waterloo football shirt on. I asked him if his team was going to make the playoffs. He said, "yes, but we'll probably are going to lose in the first round. We're not that good."

Although, there is no audio broadcast on NFHS, I do like the lighted down markers so at least you can tell down and distance.

SHG gets the ball back after a three and out. They will start at their own 26 with less than 5 to play

Another Cyclone touchdown just about seals this one up. Following a two point try, they lead 28-16. Probably around 3 minutes left for a miracle

Hearing Ken Leonard wasn't coaching tonight due to the flu. Any truth to this?

I reshared misinformation.
If that's the biggest mistake you make for the rest of the year, SMILE!!

By the way, I missed watching Hickey play, and IHSA Archives does not have the championship game(s) he played in. Is there ANYWHERE on the internet to see him in his Althoff days? Thanks for any info!

that is what was reported before game by one of the broadcast crew on twitter. sloppy game by SHG and betting lots will be brought up in a very ling film session .

Sloppiest I've seen SHG in years. 5 offsides. Couple of holding. One OPI. Leonard missed game due to flu. 4 of the offsides were one DT who.I don't think was a regular starter.

Waterloo had their own problems. Five false starts. Several holds. Two personal fouls plus a horse collar tackle thar move a already great KO return to their own 10.

The whole team seemed disjointed for 3 quarters. Lott's worst passing night with his b
second INT of the year being a pick six. RECEIVERS dropping easy passes
But his leadership and running were largely responsible for the 21 point 4th quarter.

John Allison. Acting HC, said they needed a game like this. Not only having to play a 4 quarter game but also getting punched in the nose and surviving it

Oh well. On to week 3 and Murphysboro

I hate them. Sophomore year mud pit in the quarters.

Knowing Ken Leonard like I have over the years....that has to be one hell of a flu to miss a game....

I suspect that it was not as.much about him as not wanting to infection any of the team at this point. Coach Allison is the designated heir

Can't be too cautious this time if year. I've seen teams racked by flu outbreaks lose critical games

A bit of trivia I just discovered. The Waterloo extra point kicker, Alexis (Lexi) Stephens was trained by Louie Aguiar, former NFL punter who I believe even spent some time with the Bears. She had 3 field goals and 1 extra point in the Bulldogs' 28-16 loss to the Cyclones. In other words, she accounted for 10 of their 16 points. Quite impressive in my mind.
