SHG (12-1) vs Joliet Catholic (13-0)
This will be the 5th meeting between these two powerhouses and their third state title matchup. JCA beat 6A qualifier Simeon, 6A semi-finalist Crete, and 7A semi-finalist Brother Rice during the regular season. Last week, they won on the road at Richmond Burton, ending their 32 game winning streak. SHG beat 6A 2nd round team Springfield, 6A qualifier Chatham, and 5A qualifier Jacksonville during the regular season. Last week, they avenged their only loss (Week 3, 41-45) by beating Rochester at home 49-42 after trailing 25-7 in the 2nd quarter.

421 and 437. That is how many yards SHG QB Ty Lott threw for in the two games against Rochester. For the season, he is over 2,900 yards with 42 TD’s and 2 INT’s. Lott has also rushed for almost 400 yards. He doesn’t have the speed of 2021-Spring QB Isiah Thompson but stands in well against the pass rush and can run if needed. Lott has four excellent Receivers: Keshon Singleton (47 receptions/12 TD’s), Jake Hamilton (46/9), Maddix Morris (32/8), and Kyle Long (16/8). The Cyclones did not rush much last week against Rochester but are effective in goal line situations. SHG has scored at least 41 points in each game. JCA gave up 49 to Brother Rice but has held everyone else to 28 or less.

388 and 344. That is how many rushing yards the SHG defense gave up in the two Rochester contests. The JCA offensive line is massive with four of the five starters weighing 265 or more. They will be facing a much smaller Cyclone front Seven. The main JCA Running Backs have rushed for over 1,700 yards (Iannatone) and nearly 1,300 (Anderson) with a combined 45 TD’s. The QB (Voss) has thrown for over 1,100 yards and rushed for nearly 600. JCA has scored at least 30 points in each game. SHG gave up 45 and 41 to Rochester but has held everyone else to 14 or less.

This has the potential to be a high scoring game, with the defenses under constant pressure. The weather forecast is cold but not particularly windy, which is good news for SHG’s passing attack. Both teams have substantial state final experience. Neither will panic if they fall behind early. With 15 starters returning next year, Ken Leonard may be thinking that this group could be a lot like his 2013-2014 teams that won two title games against Montini. Win in an upset the first year and then have a great chance to go back to back having so many returners. SHG can win Friday. I thought last week against Rochester it was a 50-50 contest. SHG didn’t flinch and recovered after a terrible start. JCA is a slight favorite though because they’ve faced better competition overall and their power running attack will be very hard to contain. JCA 42 SHG 38

Excellent preview! I will be rooting for SHG. After watching them fight back down 25-7 to Rochester, they have gained a new bandwagon fan in me.

All.... I looked for it twice. What happened to the 4A state championship gameday thread? Anyway. The rodents analysis on the game. Gravity and physics. Big ball rolls over little ball..... Ratsy P.S. The countdown begins. August 26, 2022. Lanphier @ SHG

I deferred to Edgy’s thread during the game, but I’m tardy on the post game analysis.

What a start for SHG with the KO return for TD (and it wasn’t by Singleton their most dangerous returner).

After JCA’s first drive, it was difficult to see how the SHG defense was going to get stops. JCA O-line was massive and physical and Iannantone and particularly Anderson did not go down often when first hit by the SHG defender(s). There is no scheme to defend that type of attack with the size disadvantage SHG was facing.

Once JCA got a few stops early, SHG was not going to be able to turn this into a back and forth pass vs run track meet. The fumble in the first half after Lott had gained about 15 yards was especially damaging. Also, JCA blew up several sideline passes that Rochester had no luck stopping in either of their games.

SHG never quit and the back to back TD’s at the end of the first half and after the onside kick in the 3rd were signs of their resilience. Lott played much better as the game went on, and he was generally well protected. But there was just no stopping the JCA rushing attack.

By my count, SHG returns 15 of their 22 starters next year. They are my way to early clear CS8 favorite in 2022. Lott, Sanders, Singleton, Hamilton, West, Morris, and McMann are just some of the big name returners.

Congratulations to both SHG and JCA on great seasons.

I will try to do a CS8 wrap-up later today.

Looking ahead to August 26.

Way Early 2022 CS8 Predictions
1- SHG (12-2). Returns 15 starters from the Class 4A runner up team. QB Ty Lott leads 7 returners on offense including all four of his main receivers. Points will be scored in bunches. The 8 defensive returners will be led by LB Cory West. SHG also gets Rochester, Chatham, Jacksonville, and Decatur MacArthur at home.
2- Rochester (11-2). Who replaces Hank Beatty at QB? Senior Keeton Reiss took some snaps this season but is also a candidate at RB and plays DE/LB. Derek usually doesn’t play his QB on defense. Junior Parker Gillespie was the JV QB but is also by far the leading returning WR. Rochester returns three starting Offensive Lineman and there is a lot of size at the lower grades, which is unusual for the Rockets. The Defense could be looking at 8 new starters.
3- Chatham (6-4). The Titans would love to return to their 2018-2019 status when they tied or won the CS8 conference title. They return Senior QB Jack Knudson, who was impressive before being injured, and his top three receivers. As one of the biggest enrollment schools in the CS8, Chatham was surprisingly small on the OL/DL in the spring and fall 2021 seasons. That hurt them particularly on defense against the top tier of the conference. Their freshman team was very good, not sure if any of them will get major varsity playing time in the fall.
4- Jacksonville (5-5). The Crimson return 3-year starting QB Elijah Owens and RB Cam Ron Mitchell, the two leading returning rushers in the conference. Jacksonville will have a difficult schedule, playing SHG, Rochester, Chatham, Springfield, and Decatur Mac all on the road. Owens will draw plenty of scouting attention. Along with his running ability, will he have the receiving corps to improve on his 1,300+ passing yards?
5- Decatur MacArthur (4-5). Mac loses QB Brylan Phillips, who started for four years first at Eisenhower and then at Mac, along with their leading rusher and two leading receivers. Mac does have some size returning on both lines.
6- Springfield (7-4). The Senators lose Coach Roy Gully, four year starting QB Rashad Rochelle, RB Tyree Coleman, WR Mitchell Logan, and several other major contributors. They will also have to reconfigure a defense which gave up 72 points in both their playoff games and struggled against all but the bottom teams in the CS8.
7- U High (3-6). The Pioneers return QB Colin Cunningham who threw for over 900 yards. 2nd year Coach Brody Walworth built a program at Pleasant Plains previously, which is not known as a football school. Can they improve and compete with any of the top conference teams, particularly Springfield and Decatur Mac who could be down a bit in 2022?
8- Southeast (3-6). The Spartans ended the season with Sophomores starting at QB and RB, and their offense did improve late. They should progress as Juniors but can the defense, which gave up 40 or more points 6 times, improve significantly?
9- Decatur Eisenhower (1-8). 2nd year Coach Moe Dampeer got his 1st win in Week 9 when they defeated Lanphier 18-7. He will try to build on that moving forward. The number of kids in the program, particularly at the lower grades will be critical.
10- Lanphier (0-9). Lanphier had been a pleasant surprise in the spring season, going 3-3. Unfortunately, they lost almost all their skill players and had a very rough fall campaign. Like Eisenhower, keeping kids in the program at the lower grades will be critical to rebuilding. Getting SHG Week 1 not the ideal way to start the season.

Any more of this and Edgy is going to have to start paying you! Ha ha
