So what is the biggest question facing the 2021 Maine South Hawks this fall? Make sure to check back here daily for new teams and the biggest questions each day leading up to IHSA Fall Football Kickoff.
Team: Maine South Hawks
Biggest Question?
Maine South posted a strong 5-1 record this past spring and it's only loss came to Naperville Central 31-30 in Week 6. The Hawks and veteran head coach Dave Inserra just seems to find a way to compete at the highest level week in and week out, year in and year out.
The Biggest Question? Can the Hawks reload upfront on both sides of the lines this summer?
Line play never seems to get it's praise, especially at a school with as high of a profile as Swagger High has in Chicagoland. Sure, Maine South throws the football around and has one of the top high octane offenses and experienced coaching staffs in Illinois with a proven track record of success. Yet nothing really can get going for Maine South unless the line play is right.
The Hawks offense will welcome back a terrific starting quarterback in senior Rowan Keefe, who will be surrounded with a top level EWR/TE in Northwestern commit Chris Petrucci along with one of the biggest/tallest receiver corp I can ever remember at Maine South. The backfield also has players in senior WR/RB Mikey Nelligan and RB Mike Sajenko who will have a shot at adding a running game to an already strong passing game.
The Hawks defense will also welcome back some key starters back this fall including two way standout TE/DE Chris Petrucci, senior DE Teddy Gianaris plus a handful of names in the secondary who saw steady playing time last spring.
So...the line play? The Hawks will need to replace it's entire starting offensive line from the spring, as all five starters graduated. The defensive line? Again both Chris Petrucci and Teddy Gianaris are back but other spots will be filled with less familiar names. If the Hawks plan on making a deep run, no question the Hawks will need to develop it's line play and find some key names this summer to step up. If the Hawks can get the line play in check? This team has some relly key ingredients to make a strong run this fall.
