ICE Week 6

Nothing of note last week. I guess the Herscher/Streator game probably could have been GOTW, but I just felt like the CC/Peotone game had more implications for the playoffs. This week has one key matchup, and two lower tier teams looking to just get a win.

Braidwood (0-5) @ Coal City (4-1) - Nothing to worry about here for the Coalers. They get a tune up week before traveling to Wilmington for what many would have considered to be the ICE championship next week, but we will dive more into that next week. I think CC rolls coal and comes away with an easy win. CC 49 RC 7

Hershcer (3-2) @ Wilmington (5-0) - Another one sided affair. Even if the score isn't astronomical (I do think it will be) in the end, I think it will be a classic Wilmo ground and pound. Controlling victory for Wilmington. Cats 42 Herscher 14

Lisle (0-5) @ Streator (1-4) - Lisle won't find their first win of the season this week. Give me the team who has done it once this year. Streator 28 Lisle 7

Peotone (3-2) @ Manteno (5-0) - Route 50 Rumble is your ICE GOTW........I like Manteno to remain undefeated. They haven't beat anyone great, however they still haven't lost. Although Peotone's losses were to Wilmo and CC they happened to be in the last two weeks and the momentum is down for the 'Tone. Plus this is probably the toughest 3 week stretch for any team in the ICE this year. I like the Panthers to pull the "upset" here and secure their spot as the 3rd best in the ICE. Manteno 35 Tone 20

Without looking too much into the future can we just talk about how awesome week 9 will be? CC Manteno will be huge and I'm going to predict that RC and Lisle will be using week 9 to get one of those teams their lone win.

No Change in Power Rankings.

1. Wilmington
2. CC
3. Manteno
4. Peotone
5. Herscher
6. Streator
7. RC
8. Lisle

My Week 7 Player and Coach of the Week nominees are....

Thanks for all of the great suggestions it's always greatly appreciated.

Coach? Geneva HC Boone Thorgesen- Led the Vikings to an impressive 30-7 win over Batavia, snapping the Bulldogs 13 game winning streak over the Vikings.

Player? Geneva senior OL/DL Joe Pettit who starred on both sides of the line for thw Vikings and was a big key in the Vikings 30-7 win over Batavia. This is the first time in my history on the Bears committee that I've nominated an OL/DL for the award.

The Bears will announce the winners on Thusday

Is Carmel Catholic back?

Bowing out in the 5A second round at 7-4 last year, the Corsairs completed their first winning season since 2014.

This year, CCHS has a nice 2-0 start against traditionally above average public school opponents (Crete Monee and Lake Forest), but they have some challenging CCL/ESCC crossover games coming up against Mt Carmel, Providence and Notre Dame.

If they ARE back, I can see them finishing the regular season at 6-3 at worst. If they can string together back-to-back winning seasons, I think we can officially call this a turnaround. If not, then last year was a blip. Hope it's the former and not the latter.

Odds and Ends....

In the past there has been quite a bit of movement roster wise with these two schools. Until a firm roster becomes available nothing is set in stone as they say.

I took a quick look size wise where these two schools would be if in Illinois and using the Ihsa rules. As a basis I used the playoff qualifiers from 2023. Not perfect by any means but what the heck. The Lions multiplied only would be one of the largest postseason teams in Class 3A.

The Cadets are in a bit of a different situation. I believe I have their formula figured out in the right order correctly. At 815 males their enrollment gets doubled and then multiplied. CBC would of been one the smaller 8A postseason teams. And of course the SF would also come into play more so for Ritter.

If there was a "Holy War" between the two a split decision. Noteworthy though Massey's figures as a rule are more current. Calpreps usually about mid season tend to be more refined.

CBC 39 CR 28 (67%) Massey
CR 35 CBC 31 (60%) CalPreps

CS8 Predictions-Week 6

Two games with major playoff implications and a matchup between the conference's top 2 QB's highlight Week 6.

West Division
Lanphier (0-5) at QND (4-1)
Coming off an important road win against Springfield, QND returns home this week against the Lions. Common opponents: QND beat Springfield 14-9. Lanphier lost 51-12. QND beat SHG 37-7. Lanphier lost 63-6. QND should get a big lead quickly and turn it over to the reserves. QND 48 Lanphier 0. Massey prediction: QND 42 Lanphier 0.

SHG (3-2) at Southeast (0-5) Saturday 1 pm at Memorial Stadium
After almost winning in Week 1 against East Peoria, the Spartans have lost each of their next 4 games by at least 21 points. Common opponents: SHG lost 37-7 to QND. Southeast lost 43-0. SHG beat Jacksonville 35-10. Southeast lost 40-0. SHG should win comfortably. SHG 45 Southeast 8. Massey prediction: SHG 47 Southeast 7.

Jacksonville (4-1) at Springfield (4-1)
A huge game for both teams. Coming off a tough last-minute loss to QND, Springfield does get to play this one at home. Should the Crimsons lose, their schedule is a little more favorable to getting a 5th win than the Senators. Jacksonville faces MacArthur in Week 8 at home and Lincoln on the road Week 9. I would consider them at this time a moderate favorite in both games. Common opponents: Jacksonville beat Lanphier 76-14. Springfield beat them 51-12. Jacksonville beat Southeast 40-0. Springfield beat them 51-24. The Crimsons have been a mostly running team so far this season, while the Senators have a more balanced offensive attack. That run/pass balance and home field advantage should be enough to get the Senators a close win. Springfield 27 Jacksonville 16. Massey prediction: Jacksonville 28 Springfield 27.

East Division
Eisenhower (0-5) at Rochester (3-2)
Homecoming week for the Rockets. Common opponents: Rochester lost to Chatham 45-17. Eisenhower lost 56-14. Rochester beat Lincoln 63-7. Eisenhower lost 55-24. Derek would like to get an early lead and then give his 2-way players some rest along with getting some of the injured Rockets healthy. Eisenhower has scored at least two TD's each week but has also allowed 55 or more points in every game except for Week 1. Rochester 52 Eisenhower 6. Massey prediction: Rochester 49 Eisenhower 7.

MacArthur (2-3) at Lincoln (3-2)
The loser of this game is very unlikely to make the playoffs. The winner still has challenges going forward but retains hope. Mac played well last week at home against Chatham for 3 quarters before losing 34-6. The powerful Titans offense had only 13 points until late in the 3rd. Can the Generals replicate that performance on the road? Lincoln's wins are over Lanphier, Southeast, and Eisenhower. Can they win against better competition and then perhaps knock off Jacksonville in Week 9? Common opponents: Mac lost to U High 48-7. Lincoln lost 52-0. Mac beat Eisenhower 55-12. Lincoln beat them 55-24. This is an interesting contest as Lincoln is a running team and Mac usually defends that well. In their five combined losses, Mac and Lincoln have not scored more than 7 points. Expect a close but fairly low scoring contest. MacArthur 20 Lincoln 12. Massey prediction: MacArthur 35 Lincoln 14.

Chatham (4-1) at U High (3-2)
The conference's top QB's, Colten Knoedler of Chatham and Alek Weiland of U High, face off in a potentially high scoring game. Both performed very well against Rochester, and each has multiple receiving options. Coming off of a tough 38-30 loss to Rochester, can U High bounce back at home and upset the Titans? Common opponents: Chatham beat Rochester 45-17. U High lost 38-30. Chatham beat MacArthur 34-6. U High beat them 48-7. The Titans would love to have a fast start and take hope away from the Pioneers early. Pass protection will be critical for U High. They also need a better defensive effort than last week and a lucky break or two. I think this is a 4-quarter game, but the Titans come out on top. Chatham 47 U High 27. Massey prediction: Chatham 42 U High 27.

CS8 Predictions-Week 5

It could be a wet Friday on top of the showers that occurred Monday and Tuesday morning. Shouldn't have a huge impact on the turf fields but the grass ones could be slick and muddy.

West Division
Southeast (0-4) at Jacksonville (3-1)
The Crimsons should have success with their running attack and go to 4-1. The Spartans have some offensive firepower but have given up over 40 points each of the last three weeks. Jacksonville 45 Southeast 12. Massey prediction: Jacksonville 48 Southeast 14.

Lanphier (0-4) at SHG (2-2)
Should be a quick running clock for the Cyclones. Lanphier lost last week to Jacksonville 76-14, while SHG beat them 35-10 in Week 3. SHG 56 Lanphier 0. Massey prediction: SHG 49 Lanphier 6.

QND (3-1) at Springfield (4-0)
Can QND avoid a letdown in their first away game in '24 and after an impressive 37-7 message to the conference win over SHG last week? Springfield is the last unbeaten team in the CS8. They're definitely an improved team, but this will be their toughest test so far this season. QND's opponents through 4 weeks have 8 wins, while Springfield's only have 3. Should they lose, QND's remaining schedule is still favorable to them getting 6 or 7 wins. The Senators have challenging games each of the final 4 weeks, while a win Friday gets them to playoff eligibility. There is one common opponent. QND shutout Southeast 43-0, while Springfield beat them 51-24. QND 30 Springfield 21. Massey prediction: QND 28 Springfield 21.

East Division
Chatham (3-1) at MacArthur (2-2)
Last year, MacArthur upset Chatham 14-12 at Stephen Decatur's stadium. Both teams have beaten Eisenhower this season. Chatham won 56-14, while Mac won 55-12. Not expecting a Generals upset this year, even with them getting to play at home. Chatham 48 MacArthur 14. Massey prediction: Chatham 42 MacArthur 20.

Eisenhower (0-4) at Lincoln (2-2)
Eisenhower has been running clocked three weeks straight and has given up at least 55 points in each of those games. Lincoln went on the road last Friday and was shutout 52-0 by U High. The Railers should be able to get their running attack going for their 3rd win. Lincoln 38 Eisenhower 8. Massey prediction: Lincoln 45 Eisenhower 13.

U High (3-1) at Rochester (2-2)
U High is coming off an easy 52-0 win over Lincoln, while Rochester looks to recover from a 45-17 blowout by Chatham. Rochester also beat Lincoln 63-7 in Week 3. The teams did not play each other in '23. U High has a strong passing attack, and the Rockets struggled to contain Colton Knoedler and the Titans at all last week. Field conditions may support more of a running attack Friday. The Rockets blocking (both by the O-Line and Receivers) has been below average in both losses. This is a chance for Rochester to either show some improvement in this area or continue to have the same issues, including problems with snaps and handoffs. A hard week of practices will hopefully result in a more focused and motivated performance than last week. Rochester 37 U High 17. Massey prediction: Rochester 45 U High 14.

WB6 Friday night speed cap

WB6 Friday night games

Sterling 13 – Geneseo 6: An old fashion slug fest game. Sterling gained just over 200 yards, most of it through the air, while Geneseo was held to under 200, most of it on the ground. Sterling would score it’s 13 in the first half, while Geneseo would finally find the end zone with about 4 minutes left in the game. Both defenses looked good, but the offenses are very must still a work in progress for both teams.

United Township 34 – Rock Island 7: A slow starting game til midway through the 2nd quarter when UT started to get rolling and Rocky started proverbially to shoot itself in the foot with penalties and turnover. UT would take a 13-0 lead to the half and then put the hammer down in the 2nd half to pull away and win comfortably to get to it’s 4th win. For poor Rocky, the woes continue.
