CPL Pick 'EM Week 1 IHSA Playoffs Edition!!

Seems like it was just yesterday that I was getting ready to take the afternoon off work and head to some Hot Thursday CPL Week 1 Action! Now it's the first round of the playoffs? Come on! Not sure if it's a record, but there are 21 CPL Teams in the IHSA Playoffs! 21! If I'm being honest, beginning with this week, I really don't have to post about the CPL because this is the time of year that the board comes alive with CPL talk! On to the picks!

Senn @ Carey-Grove
The subdivision dwellers in Carey-Grove are really in a pickle over this one. Tonight is the big trick or treating night where the full size candy bars take a back seat to the not spoken of yard decorating contest between, Brett, Chad, and Austin. By the time all the inflatables are down tonight, Muffy, Brittney, and Tiffany will be prepping for the big progressive costume party on Friday night in Lognanmark Circle. It's the biggest event of the fall! Tyler and Logan plan on having the Starlink hooked up, and the giant projector and screen on Chad's lower patio to catch the game while the bobbing for mini bottles is going on. None of it matters anyway. Senn rolls off the bus 22 minutes before the game in full uniforms and drops the hammer!
DAWGS!!

Hoffman Estates @ Lincoln Park
Serious question. Do people actually live in Hoffman Estates? I thought it was just car dealerships, strip malls, and chain restaurants. They should play this one on the grass field in Oz Park next to LP High. At least you could leave at halftime and get to Brando's for some karaoke.
I GOT YOU BABE!!

Genesseo @ Sullivan
Every year, Genesseo pays for at least on CPL Team to roll into Genesseo and play early in the season. Apparently, they pay for everything. Transportation, food, etc... Hope they aren't looking for Sully to pay them for making the trip to Lane Stadium for this one. Sorry Leafs, CPL can't get the bathrooms working in that joint, let alone pay for your bus.
Look for quarters in the couch!

Amundsen @ Geneva
Geneva has to be thinking that Amundsen is going to be distracted by the Lululemon wearing, baby stroller pushing, Pumpkin spice sipping, avocado toast eating crowd that will be pre game tailgating on a beautiful Geneva Saturday afternoon. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Joke is on them! Amundsen plays in Winnemac Park Baby!! They cut their teeth on Athleta and Canada Goose, and sweat pumpkin spice!
I LOVE FALL!!!

Texas is Different, Man

I follow DeSoto High on X and they reposted this about their five-star WR, Boobie Feaster: Login to view embedded media
At-home massage therapist. So I started looking around and I see it is DeSoto v Duncanville this week - conference mate both nationally ranked. They call it the Conference of Death. The game will stream for free and I will be watching.

Look at this nice little perk - damn boy, I am sure this cost several grand for all of that shrimp and crab!!!!

WB6 Week 10 Playoff preview

Geneseo (5-4) @ Chicago Sullivan (9-0): Geneseo got itself a pretty good draw and I think has a shot to make the quarters, but first it has to take care of business as the Leafs take a field trip to Chicago to face a Sullivan team who’s defense has pitched 4 shut outs, but the offense has not put up a lot of points late in the season. Geneseo needs to lean on it’s run game and not have any second half defensive collapses.

Prediction: Geneseo by 3 touchdowns

Addison Trail (7-2) @ Moline (7-2): Moline is coming into the playoffs on a 5 game winning streak with an offense that has been clicking behind a powerful wing-t running attack with play actions passes getting behind the defenses. The Maroon defense has been up and down, giving up 21 or more (30 or more three times) points to playoff bound teams. Moline will be tested straight out of the gate against Addison Trail.

Prediction: Moline by 1

Argo (5-4) @ Quincy (9-0): Quincy hosts an Argo team that has won and lost in streaks this season, starting 3-0 then dropping 4 straight before winning their last 2 to get into the play offs. Quincy needs to come out focused and let it’s high powered offense run wild. Two things Quincy needs to work on if they want to make a run is the defense needs to stiffen up (it surrendered 31 points week 9) and Bradyn Little needs to make sure he protect the ball.

Prediction: Quincy by 4 touchdowns

Sterling (5-4) @ St. Francis (7-2): Sterling is probably getting sick of seeing St. Frances as they played them twice last year, including a 49-8 drumming in last years playoffs. Getting a week 10 game though is a big accomplishment for a Sterling team that is very young (starting 2, sometimes 3 freshmen on Fridays). Sterling will go out and play hard like they traditionally do, but their time will come a year or two down the road. Til then, it’s just gaining experience.

Prediction: St. Francis by running clock

MMXXIV Edition - CCL-ESCC Predictions Week IX

Apparently Gambletron doesn't believe in "Keep Hope Alive" but rather Blowout Week in CCLESCC-landia. Even my beloved are 10-point dogs and they haven't even seen that spooky mansion lurking behind the Caravan stands. The kids from the Heights get to travel 100 miles for a game, maybe pickup a few pumpkins, run around a corn maze. The only one-score game on the board is ... Benet? Hmm.

What did we learn week 9?!?

And just like that the season is over. Now the fun starts.

Here is our last regular season installment until the playoffs

1 - That Palatine soared to the top of the MSL just like no one predicted
2 - That many familiar faces are not playing - GBW, IC Prep, Carmel Cath, LZ.
3 - That ESL showed nationally and that’s good for Illinois
4 - That a round 2 of St Francis and Naz will be fun if we get it
5 - That the lowest number of total unbeatens in a season since edgy and I were in HS should make for a fun postseason
6 - That Lockport came on a little too late
7 - That what is rumored to have occurred at Rochester isn’t funny, isn’t football and isn’t good.
8 - That Libertyville and Stevenson closed the tab on the NSC
9 - That teams that chose to sandbag in week 9 may choose to regret it later.
10 - That despite the outcry of some, NO, NOT EVERY TEAM SHOULD MAKE THE PLAYOFFS- leave my football as is!

See you all after the post season.

What would Leo do in the 1A playoffs?

I always feel bad for Leo... A tiny school forced to play a (albeit lower level) CCL schedule each year with almost no hope of cobbling together 5 wins. I have to imagine if they played a more "1A" schedule (Christ the King, St. Edward, etc.) they might have a shot to make a little noise in the playoffs. Last time in (2013) they won 3 games and lost in the semis to eventual champ Le-Win! What do you think they could do in 1A if they got a berth?

A few data points from this season:
  • Lost by 19 to 3A playoff team Genoa-Kingston out of the Big Northern
  • Lost by 1 to 6A playoff team Amundsen who is competitive in the CPL Red, wins over Lane, LP, Niles North
  • Dominated a very bad Noble team out of the CPS (Can someone explain what Noble was doing scheduling St. Laurence, Marmion, AND Leo?)
  • Lost by 6 to 5A playoff team Marmion
  • Played reasonably competitive games against Marian Cath and St. Patrick
  • Blown out by Rita, Larry, ND

Much respect to those kids and coaches at Leo for coming out each year to play a (relative to size) gauntlet CCL schedule. Lots of history at that program! Would love to see them find a path to 5 wins in the future.

Multiplier Question

Montini, Chicago Hope, Althoff and St Laurence are all going to be multiplied next year and all lost to public schools in last years playoffs.

Wheaton Academy lost to St Laurence who then lost to Rochester and will be multiplied next year as well.

Is there any current private school that is multiplied that lost to a public school in the playoffs?

Perhaps a good new rule would be that if a private school loses to a public school or a public school wins the state championship schools are eligible for a multiplier waiver.

St Laurence lost to Rochester last year by 21 points. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for them to now be multiplied. Right?
