I have Kenwood as the ONLY 4-5 team in. I could be way off here, but that's where I have the cutoff.

Here's my projected 8a bracket. Please let me know if I have something wrong or if I am missing something

ICE Week 9

Week 9 is actually going be sneaky good I feel. Hard to pick a GOTW as I see the last 3 listed of equal importance and equal potential for a upset

Streator (3-5) @ Wilmington (8-0) - Nothing to see here folks. Cats score as many as they want. Wilmo 55 Streator 14

Lisle (0-8) @ Braidwood (0-8) - TOLIET BOWL! It all comes down to week 9 to see who can get on the board. Although I want Lisle to win (Sorry @McEvergreen), I do like the COMETS to win this game and I don't think it'll be all that close. Lisle has been beaten badly in all games except their loss to Herscher (that was still 3 scores though). RC has kept it close in a handful of their losses. I like RC to win with ease. RC 28 Lisle 10 .......side note wouldn't it be funny if it was tied in the 4th and a huge lightning storm came in and forced the game to end in a tie.....that would probably be a first in IHSA history

Manteno (7-1) @ Coal City (6-2) - All this game will do is set one team up slightly better for the playoffs. Could be a 2nd round rematch in 4A if both end up in same half. I think CC is the better team. They played Wilmo tougher and I think Manteno was more a product of a weak ICE and their non-con opponents being pretty weak too. I like CC to win easy, but not as big as Wilmo beat Manteno. CC 35 Manteno 14

Herscher (4-4) @ Peotone (5-3) - Although I think Peotone is the better team and shouldn't have much trouble here, this game should be (traditionally) of more importance *see my note at end of post*. Playoff implications are on the line for at least 1 team. Herscher has beat the punching bags of the ICE and Mac. The 'tone has beat the same punching bags, and lost to the 2 heavy hitters in the ICE as well as a surprisingly good Manteno team. Will this game be close? I honestly don't think so, but I feel like if Herscher wins it wouldn't be the biggest shock in the world. I think Peotone gets up early and the tigers just can't come back. Peotone 35 Herscher 21

ICE Power Rankings
1. Wilmo
2. CC
3. Manteno
4. Peotone
5. Herscher
6. Streator
7. Reed-Custer
8. Lisle

******Playoffs*****
Let's take a trip down memory lane youngsters. I remember a time post 8 classes, where 5-4 was not a guarantee to make the playoffs. Here is a brief dive into the recent trend:
'23 - 4-5 teams in - 6
'22 - 4-5 team in - 6
'21 - 5-4 teams out - 1
'20 - covid
'19 - data not available in the qualifiers tab, too lazy to look through all the records
'18 - 5-4 teams out - 18
'17 - 5-4 teams out - 17
After this it kind of bounces around but the trend since '17 is there.

I will admit, I don't follow much outside of the ICE or small school in general, but what will happen this year with those number. Years ago this week's game with Herscher and Peotone would be huge as neither team would be guaranteed as of right now and the game was a must win for both. However, this year would Herscher get in regardless of the result? Is the 'Tone potentially out if they lose? I honestly don't know, but I do think that the way trends are Peotone is set and Herscher needs the win to guarantee. Maybe 4 is good enough but IDK. I see Wilmo, CC, Manteno, and Peotone in, which I believe is what I predicted at start of year. At that point we will see where they are seeded and what draw they get.

***Other thoughts***

How long will RC let Johnston ride this out? Prior to this year's result he is 28-28. This year will drop him below the .500 mark in what will take several years to get back to .500. Do they even have a candidate close to consideration?

How long will Lisle last as a team? With only one team and a horrible year will the kids even continue to show interest?

What can we do to get better competition in the ICE? Should we look to adding teams, or setting up a conference agreement for our non-con games. IE top teams from ICE and another similar conference play week 1, second place in each play, so on and so forth.

East Side Guys and the SEC Today

Luther was decent - that punt drop nearly killed their season, but some bug third down catches may have saved it.

Tennessee Tackle Javontez Spraggins did not have his name called except for one big block - thay is a good day for a lineman.

Dom Lovett - ongoing. Has a couple of catches and drop, but not a hugely consequential one. Bulldogs seem to be pulling away.

WB6 Week 9 speedcap

And just like that, the regular season is over. Quincy, Moline, Sterling, and Geneseo have done what was needed to get to play one more week.

Quincy 42 @ Capital City (MO) 31: Quincy finally got punched in the mouth a few times, but showed they were ready by punching back. Capital City gave Quincy everything it could handle and more, but the #1 ranked team in 7A pulled it out in the end. A game Quincy needed going into the postseason where some heavyweights await.

Sterling 31 @ Moline 45: Offense was the name of the game in this one. Moline never trailed in this game, but they could never make Sterling go away. Both teams will play a week 10 game next week. Moline has been looking strong since it lost week 4 to Quincy. For Sterling, this is the best the offense has looked all season and for the team with a lot of young starters, and extra week will pay off down the road.

Geneseo 34 @ Rock Island 13: Geneseo slowly grinds down the Rocks and pulls away in the second half to get their 5th win of the season. Geneseo also forced 4 turnovers and had a goal line stand. Back to the drawing board over the off season for this Rocks football team as they end the season with only 1 win.

Galesburg 14 @ United Township 40: Galesburg would strike first after a muffed UT punt catch, but then UT would go off for the next 40 points and put this one to bed by the 4th quarter. UT will finish a frustrating 4-5 with 3 of those losses being 3 point or less losses. Galesburg will finish 1-8.

BONUS!

Monmouth-Roseville 21 @ Sterling Newman 0: Despite the closeness of the score, MR controlled this game from start to finish. MR held Newman to under 100 years of offense and allowed only 1 play of double digit yards.

Rock Falls 32 @ Winnebago 35: And the Bago is your Thunderdome winner!

Playoffs if based on Massey power ratings

Was curious as to what the field would look like if the attempt was to field the 32 best teams in each class, instead of current system based purely on records. So, here's what I did:
  • Divide the schools into 8 classes by enrollment (no one is "playing up") before the playoff teams are decided
  • Within each class, use the Massey power rankings to seed 1-32.
In this alternative universe, my Evanston Wildkits sneak in to playoffs 🎉... their reward? 1st round match up with LWE 😬

CPL Pick 'Em Week 9. CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK BABY!

"The Autumn Wind is a pirate.
Blustering in from sea,
With a rollicking song, he sweeps along,
Swaggering boisterously."
- The Autumn Wind, Raider's Anthem

Can you believe it is week 9? Come on! We were just enjoying Chicago summer and 4:30 starts in Hot Thursday CPL Action! Now it's fall, and the 3:30 starts are upon us to avoid games ending due to darkness. We also have the hottest slate of CPL games in a long time! Championships on the line! Batten down the hatches matey! We get a championship game a day!

Mather vs Sullivan - Thursday 3:30
It's a battle for the CPL White North Conference! Sullivan at 6-0 in conference, Mather at 5-1. When I think Mather, I think hot dogs. Wolfy's is right across Peterson from Mather, and I'm not sure there was ever a time that I haven't stopped when I'm driving by. In fact, there have been at least 3 times that I can remember where I was at Wolfy's, saw that there was a football game going on at the park in front of Mather, then walked over, with my hot dogs, and caught some JV football. The best hot dog around Sullivan is at Burger Bite, which is in the Devon Shell, next door to Devon Hardware. It's a legit dog, but it's at a burger joint, so.... Hold on. This is for a championship....This is a 3:30 Thursday start...IT DOESN'T MATHER WHO THE RANGERS ARE PLAYING!
MATHER!

Taft vs Whitney Young - Friday 7:00
Two 6-0 Teams in the Chicago Red Conference. This one is at the remodeled Rockne Stadium. You know I'll be hitting up the Steak n Egger before this one. I'm feeling lucky, so there is a hot chance that I might hammer down a Deep Fried Chicken Dinner. and go crazy on the slot machines. If things really are going well, I might not get across the street until halftime! Shoot, I might have a full steak n egger breakfast with my winnings before heading over! No worries either, since Rockne has the best stadium bathrooms in all of the CPL! Taft has been a contender for titles in the CPL for awhile. Whitney Young's mascot is the Dolphins. Sorry kids, Halloween is next week.
TAFT!

Simeon vs Morgan Park - Saturday 1:00
Two More 6-0 Teams in the Chicago Red Conference. Yeah, I know, it's a bit confusing, but CPL made this conference 18 teams, so the winner of this one will share with the winner of the Taft v WY game. I know it's shocking, but when I think of Gately Stadium, I think of Gately Dogs! Best hot dog in the CPL. Come to think of it, Gately also reminds me of the dudes that used to get there early on Saturday, park in that field on the north side of the stadium up against the fence, then BBQ all day and watch football. Damn shame that CPS built that new indoor track and put the baseball field there. Nothing beat sitting in the stands and smelling that BBQ. Simeon is blue and gold. Morgan Park is green and white, but they wear those pumpkin orange helmets. What did I say earlier? Sorry kids, Halloween is next week.
SIMEON!
