6/23 IHSA 8A 7on7 at West Aurora
6/30 Naperville North 7on7
7/11 CSL 7on7
working on one at Maine South

Impact Player for Maine South:

Maine South senior QB Jack Defillppis (5-foot-9, 185 pounds) is an experienced signal caller and one of the better overall quarterbacks to watch this coming season. Defillppis has an impressive arm with very good touch and feel, is mobile and is equally effective throwing the football inside or outside the pocket. The Hawks remain a team who's identity will come from its explosive offensive passing attack and as DeFillppis goes so goes the Maine South Hawks.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Maine South Hawks:

Maine South and veteran head coach Dave Inserra has built one of the most successful public high school football programs in his tenure. In 2022 the Hawks posted a 7-2 regular season and made the 8A state playoff field. The Hawks defeated Bolingbrook and South Elgin before losing to Glenbard West in the 8A quarterfinals. After the 2022 season, Maine South was found to have violated an IHSA transfer rules and was forced to forfeit all of it's wins from the 2022 season. The Hawks program has also seen some turnover within it's coaching staff including the departure of longtime legendary offensive coordinator CharlieBliss.

The biggest question facing Maine South in 2023? Can the Hawks put it's controversial off season aside and continue to win games and make a deep playoff run this fall? The Hawks no question lost a handful of key assistant coaches, yet the Hawks program is never short on talent and this staff will also reload and the football program will continue to move forward. Look for Maine South to again challenge all comers in 2023 and I can see the Hawks positing an 8-1/7-2 caliber season this fall and to be a major threat in Class 8A for the upcoming season.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

SIUC Tourney
Paducah Tourney
Team Camp at McKendree

Impact Player for Highland:

Highland senior DL Chase Pacatte (6-foot-3, 275 pounds) is a big, strong and physical linemen who has drawn increased recruiting interest and attention from various FCS and D2 level schools this summer.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Highland Bulldogs:

Highland and veteran head coach Jim Warnecke led the Bulldogs to a 8-1 regular season record in 2022. The Bulldogs made the 2022 IHSA Class 5A state playoff field, defeated Dunlap then lost to conference rival Mascoutah in second round action. The playoff loss was a stunner since Highland defeated Mascoutah 56-0 in Week 8. Highland head coach Jim Warnecke is entering his 13h season at Highland and has complied a 89-37 record in 12 seasons and Highland led by Jim Warnecke has missed the IHSA state playoff field just once (2011) in his tenure.

The biggest question facing Highland in 2023? Can the Bulldogs reload a bit at some key positions (QB/RB/OL/DL) and continue to win and become state playoff eligible. The Bulldogs no question will be young in several spots but this program is just never short on talent and numbers/depth and I expect Highland to wind up with a 7-2 season in 2023 and to be a factor again in the Class 5A state playoff field in 2023.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

6/22 Grayslake Central 7/7
July TBD

Impact Player for Fremd:

Fremd junior WR/DB Brennan Saxe (6-foot-2, 165 pounds) is already an experienced varsity starter for the Vikings. Saxe has good size, length and very good overall speed and ball skills. Look for Saxe to be asked to become a more vocal leader this summer and to help lead a talented but very young Vikings roster in 2023 and beyond.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Fremd Vikings:

Fremd and veteran head coach Lou Sponsel are coming off two back to back 1-8 seasons. The Vikings under Lou Sponsel have made the IHSA state playoffs in 7 out of the 10 seasons and Sponsel has a 49-56 record entering his 12th season.

The biggest question facing Fremd in 2023? Can the Vikings begin to bounce back from two rare down years in 2021 and 2022 this season? Fremd has some key starters back this fall and will be for the most part a very young team this season. The schedule for Fremd is rough again in 2023 including non conference games vs Lake Zurich, Hersey plus @ Evanston and also hosting Maine South before even hitting the Mid Suburban West conference slate. I'll predict that Fremd will finish the 2023 season with a 3-6 type of regular season with the arrow beginning to point upwards starting this fall.

Impact Player for Walther Christian:

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Walther Christian Broncos:

Walther Lutheran and head coach Tim Eberhard are looking to get in the win column in 2023 after positing an 0-9 record in 2022. The Broncos will also leave the ranks of the Independents and will join the newly created Chicago Prairie Football Conference which includes the Broncos along with Seneca, Ottawa Marquette, St Bede, Dwight, Elmwood Park, Westmont along with Ridgewood starting this season.

The biggest question facing Walther Christian in 2023? Can the Broncos continue to build up it's overall numbers and depth as well as play and compete in the new Chicagoland Prairie Football Conference? Teams such as St. Bede, Marquette and Ridgewood have all been pretty solid over the past handful of seasons and the Broncos will need to match up with the better teams in this conference starting this fall. I'll say Walther Lutheran end up with a 4-5 caliber season in 2023 and this remains a young team to watch over the next few years.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

7on7 Tournament-SIUC, July 15
Team Camp-July 26,27,28
Organized Team Activities throughout July.

Impact Player for Murphysboro:

Murpjysboro senior WR/DB Karmelo Abernathy is a talented, speedy multi-sport athlete for the Red Devils who eill agaon be asked to basically never leave the field for Murphysboto again in 2023. Abernathy, who was an all conference player in 2022 has bween drawing recruiting interest asnd offers from D2 schools this summer.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Murphysboro Red Devils:

Murphysboro and veteran head coach Gary Carter are coming off a strong 2022 season as the Red Devils posted an impressive 12-1 record. The RedDevils posted an undefeated 9-0 regular season record them made the Class 4A state playoff field. Murphysboro defeated DuQuoin, Columbia and Macomb before losing to eventual state champion Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin in the 4A semifinal round. gary Cater is entering hia 13th season at Murphysboro and has posted a record of 72-48 including making the Class 3A state title game in 2019.

The biggest question facing Red Devils in 2023? Can Murphysboro rely on a more veteran, experienced defense early this season as the Red Devils will bring along a younger, less experienced offense? A handful of key positions (QB/RB/OT) will need to be filled this summer and getting out of the gates quickly will also be important for the Red Devils this season. Look for Murphysboro to again get back into the IHSA post-season and I'll say they post a 7-2 regular season record in 2023.

For those in need of live tackling - Major League Rugby Championship Game in Chicago on Saturday

(CHICAGO) July 3, 2023 – The San Diego Legion and New England Free Jacks will face off in the Major League Rugby Championship Final on Saturday, July 8, after winning their respective conferences. This is the Free Jacks’ first visit to the Championship Final, while the Legion will try for a second time to capture the shield.

MLR’s new expansion team, the Chicago Hounds, will host the championship match on July 8th at 2:00 p.m. at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois. DJ Diesel, otherwise known as Shaquille O’Neal, and American Celtic band Dropkick Murphys are set to perform before and after the championship match. The day of festivities will include the Dawg Town Block Party fan festival, showcasing the best of Chicago rugby and culture through Windy City-themed vendors, musicians, and drinks, as well as a youth rugby tournament, high-performance combine, social sevens tournament, and rugby 101 sessions.

“It’s been a competitive, and exhilarating season from both of these teams“, said MLR CEO Nic Benson. “They’ve competed fiercely all year, and next week will be the culmination of their quest for the MLR shield and a showcase of the best rugby North America has to offer. We are incredibly proud of our players, and of the coaches and staff who support them, for the dedication, passion, and integrity they’ve showcased throughout the 2023 MLR season.”

MLR will announce the winner of the S. Marcus Calloway Community Impact Award Presented by Fastenal during halftime of the championship match. Named after the late S. Marcus Calloway, the founder of Rugby ATL and prominent rugby and MLR advocate who passed away in December of 2021, the annual award is given to the player who shows excellence on and off the field, inspires others to action, shows strength in character, aids those less fortunate, and embraces the core values of rugby, while displaying solidarity, discipline, and respect.

Tickets for the MLR 2023 Championship match are now on sale and include access to all of the day’s festivities.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

UofI 7 on 7 - June 15th
Naz 7 on 7 - June 28th
Team Camp - July 17th-21st

Impact Player for Sycamore:

Sycamore junior ATH Burke Gautcher is already holding a handful of Power 5 scholarship offers this summer and expect Gautcher ro play in multiple positions this fall and beyond for the Spartans and head coach Joe Ryan. Gautcher has ideal size and a frame that will allow him to add more good weight and size down the line. Gautcher is drawing scholarship offers for now as either a wide receiver or safety, but he will also continue to grow and develop and I can also see him winding up as say an OLB/DE at the Power 5 college level. Gautcher will be the highest ranked recruit to come out of the Spartans program since the run of the Neumann brothers.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Sycamore Spartans:

Sycamore and veteran head coach Joe Ryan are coming off an impressive 12-1 season in 2022. The Spoartans posted a perfect 9-0 regular season record and earned a top seeing in the Class 5A playoff field. Sycamore defeated Westinghouse, Carmel, Sterling then lost to eventual state champion Nazareth Academy in the 5A semifinal round. Joe Ryan will be entering his 20th season at Sycamore this fall and has posted a 131-72 record in 19 seasons.

The biggest question facing Sycamore in 2023? Can the Spartans reload at a handful of key positions along with develop more overall depth and continue to win big in the post-season? Sycamore under Joe Ryan has been as successful as anyone in reloading year in and year out and this school always seems to have talent and finds a way. I'mm predict that Sycamore again post a 8-1/7-2 record in 2023 then will again be a very tough out in the 2023 IHSA state playoffs.

2023 Team 7on7 or Team Summer Camp?

June 15th - University of Illinois

Impact Player for St Francis:

St Francis senior QB Alessio Milivojevic is a multi-year starter who will again be asked to provide both leadership on and off the field along with a high level of production within the Spartans offense. Milivojevic, who is already committed to Ball State this summer has a chance to become an All State level player in 2023 for the Spartans.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 St. Francis Spartans:

St Francis and head coach Bob McMillen has been able to turn the Spartans program into one of the better small school Catholic football programs in the State of Illinois under his tenure. In 2022 the Spartans posted a 8-1 regular season record with it's only loss in Week 9 against Class 3A state champion ICCP. The Spartans made the Class 4A state playoff field, defeated Marengo, Evergreen Park and Rochelle before losing to Providence Catholic in the Class 4A state semifinals.

The biggest question facing St Francis in 2023? Can the Spartans surviver it's move "up" to the ChicagoCatholic League and find a way to getting 5 wins and becoming playoff eligible? St Francis left the metro Suburban league after the 2022 season and will now be part of the revised Chicago Catholic League starting this fall. The St Francis schedule is also upgraded to a much higher level and taking on several CCL/ESCC powers week in and week out is a major grind and adjustment starting this fall. Even the Spartans non conference slate is much improved in 2023 with an opening game hosting Downers Grove North then take on Sterling at Sterling in Week 2. I'll say St. Francis finds it's way to a 6-3/5-4 regular season record then becomes a sleeper program in the IHSA state playoff field.

Impact Player for Monmouth Roseville:

Monmouth Roseville senior RB/DB Payton Thompson is a two way starter and standout for the Titans. Look for Thompson to again provide production on both sides of the football in 2023 along with providing leadership on and off the field for a team loaded with underclassmen.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Monmouth Roseville Titans:

Monmouth Roseville and head coach Jeremy Adolphson is entering his 13th season as the Titans head coach and has posted a 50-61 record in 12 seasons. The Titans in 2022 finished the regular season with a 5-4 record, made the Class 3A state playoff field and lost to Stillman Valley in opening round action.

The biggest question facing Monmoth Roseville in 2023? Can the Titans reload at several key positions this summer (QB/RB/WR/DL/LB) and continue to win games and get back into the IHSA state playoff field for the third straight season. The Monmouth Roseville roster is loaded with a strong sophomore class this season and look for several new faces to have an opportunity to become key contributors in 2023. I'll say the Titan end up posting a 6-3/5-4 regular season record and get back into the IHSA playoffs in 2023.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Lakes Eagles:

Lakes Community and head coach Jason Ellerman in 2022 just missed out on making the IHSA state playoff field and posted a 4-5 record. The Eagles actually came within a point to getting to 5 wins as a Week 9 40-39 loss to Grayslake Central kept the Eagles at home in the post-season. Lakes had made the IHSA state playoff field for 12 straight seasons before 2022, so the Week 9 loss no question will serve as motivation to a program seeking some payback and returning to it's winning ways this fall.
The biggest question facing Lakes in 2023? Can the Eagles reload in several key spots and get back to winning games and getting back into the IHSA state playoff field in 2023? Lakes welcomes back just 8 returning starters (4 offense 4 defense) and look for the Eagles to seek answer at some key spots (QB/RB/OL/LB/DB) this summer. Lakes has always been able to bounce back and reload as well as anyone in the NLCC, and I'm looking at Lakes to post a 6-3/7-2 caliber season in 2023.

Impact Player for Harlem:

Harlem junior RB Jahmani Muhammed (5-foot-7, 160 pounds) is an electric game changer type of running back or the Huskies. Muhammed as a sophomore in 2022 was easily the Huskies best big play maker and is a twitchy, athletic player capable to playing multiple positions on the field if asked including on special teams and the return game. Look for Muhammed's overall recruiting stock to continue to rise this fall and beyond.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Harlem Huskies:

Harlem and veteran head coach Bob Moynihan has done a terrific job of keeping the Huskies program into the upper tier of winning football programs in the NIC-10 after he inherited the football program from long time head coach Jim Morrow. Harlem in 2022 posted a 6-3 regular season and made the Class 6A state playoff field. The Huskies defeated Amundsen and Grayslake North before losing to Prairie Ridge in the 6A quarterfinal round.

The biggest question facing Halem in 2023? Can the Huskies stay healthy, build upon it's surprising post-season success from 2022 and also develop some much needed depth and overall numbers? Harlem no question will be again one of the top returning teams in the NIC-10 for 2023
and I can see the Huskies getting into the 6A and again have a shot at making more noise in the post-season this fall. I'll say Harlem finished the 2023 regular season with a 7-2 record.

My Take: Naperville North June 30th 7on7 and Linemen Challenge

This event was a bigger spinoff of the Huskies weekly Tuesday 7on7's in which North will usually welcome in 6-8 teams for work....the collection of teams here was really solid and also including a few things that worked pretty well for everyone. The Linemen were included and everyone brought it's group.,...and many liked the time allotted to the JV kids where the Varsity teams had 25 minute games while each team's JV teams got another 13 minutes of work. Smart move.

Schools in attendance:

Naperville North
Naperville Central
Glenbard West
Minooka
Waubonsie Valley
Lincoln Way East
Metea Valley
Wheaton North
Neuqua Valley
Maine South
Mount Carmel

Overall kudos to Sean Drendel and the NN coaches who made this event run pretty smoothly. This event was developed by Drendel just because it seems like team events and team 7on7 gatherings seem to be going away....but the need for these events was pretty evident after Friday's event.

My coverage/focus is always on the team I have not seen yet in person this summer,,,,,but if needed I'll add additional takes on those same school's I've visited.

Minooka won both the 7on7 championship here along with the linemen challenge.

Naperville North- The Huskies are having a decent summer and again the connection of junior QB Jacob Bell and senior WR/S Luke Williams is elite. The Huskies have a nice core of additional backs and receivers and keep an eye on senior WR Brock Pettaway along with junior WR Ian MacConnachie who had some nice plays and catches here.

Naperville Central- The Redhawks have been decent over the past few years after the various in house transfer issue scandal and they looked decent here again on Friday. Naperville Central and head coach Mike Ulreich always has numbers and depth and that also goes for the linemen group along with the skills. Central has a handful of key names to watch this coming fall in OL Grant Ellinger (Virginia) and senior DL Maverick Ohle...and senior QB Jack Burton Cook also looked good here at times. Missing ingredient for the Redhawks? Who are the big play makers and just how deep is the overall talent level for the 2023 season? Again lots to like here....but can the Redhawks find some needed big play playmakers this summer?

Glenbard West- I was able to see the Hitters a few different times already this summer including last week at Naperville North Tuesday night so for more in depth check that posting. One area for concern here? The Hillmen offensive line is a much smaller group physically compared to the oversized group, many who who graduated in 2023. Glenbard West also has one of the top offensive line coaches in Coach Sig so regardless of sixe or lack of size this group will be ready come kickoff 2023. West made it to the 7on7 final and lost a close game to Minooka (a finals matchup I would have bet would never happen lol) and the Hitters have lots to like from an offensive skills standpoint (JuJu Ellens is a great place to start) and West just was very consistent all day long here.

Minooka- Minooka continue to make positive progress as a program under head coach Matt Harding and the growth of the football program goes beyond the field. Minooka's massive facility upgrades continue this summer with an added Jumbotron (or EDGYtron as I prefer to call it) along with a much needed new digital lighting system and Minooka looks more and more like an 8A school these days. On the field? The Indians got a very steady performance from senior QB Nathan Maul who was able to just find the open man, made good reads and decisions here. Minooka was also down a few key names including WR Donovan Anderson along with RB/DB Joey Partridge, but the skills have good speed and depth and kids like senior WR Kam Chigi and senior TE Carson Jacoby along with a handful of sophomore who stepped up had a big day. The Minooka linemen as usual have good size, have really good overall numbers and this group knows where the weight room is located these days. Again...Minooka upgraded one of the smallest 8A weight rooms into a very solid place to get work in and the Minooka kids have serious strength. Everyone by now knows senior OL Brady Barrowman while another name rising up the charts is senior TE/DE Cayden Garcia who has a real chance to posting a big senior season. Overall this program is getting closer and closer to really taking off and becoming a team to challenge in Class 8A. Minooka also won the linemen challenge portion of this event, a huge win for this up and coming program for sure.

Waubonsie Valley- The Warriors and head coach Tom Baumgarten is getting better and especially this summer....you can see this team making more noise and having a chance at a winning season in 2023. QB Luke Elsea throws a good ball and is also very consistent in making good reads and decisions. Minnesota commit TE Julian Johnson is a huge target in the offense and the overall skill and talent level is so much better compared to a year or two ago. Linemen wise the Warriors are also bigger, stronger and seem to have more kids this summer which is another plus in my books.

Lincoln Way East- The Griffins brought like 100 kids, split up it's team into two to help replace Kenwood who cancelled and the Griffins just got work in. The Top Team is as good as ever. QB Braden Tischer is simply in line to have a huge senior season and his overall game, arm strength and accuracy along with his handle on the East offense is very high this summer. East also has an abundance of speedy skill kids all over the field and the team again has impressive depth, speed and talent. The defense once again has a group of 5-foot-10-11, 180-190 pound linebacker/assassins once again and the secondary has plenty of talent as well. The linemen group has some high level talent in Iowa commit OL Josh Janowski and junior DE Caden O'Rourke and again this remains one of the best overall teams in Illinois.

Metea Valley- Metea Valley from an overall talent level standpoint has some kids who can play....and showed some good things here including having a big and physical linemen group. The question is can Metea Valley keep it's kids at home, build up the overall depth and numbers and hopefully get things rolling?

Wheaton North- The Falcons just show up, play pretty low key and get work done. The Falcons are noting too flashy but kids like QB Max Howser along with RB Walker Owens are very solid kids and players and as I mentioned earlier this summer North will again challenge all comers in the Dukane in 2023.

Neuqua Valley- Strong...that's the impression I got again from NV after this event. The offense has a very solid QB in senior Ryan Mohler who has a good. strong and accurate arm and was pretty locked in here all day. I watched a great bracket matchup against Maine South as the Wildcats went toe for toe with the high flying Hawks and I just came away liking a lot from Neuqua Valley. Also senior WR/DB Miles Miskel is going to have a major breakout season in 2023 and Miskel was an impact player on both sides of the football on Friday.

Maine South- A handful of observations here.....the Hawks will be fine again in 2023 besides the rocky last year or so within the football program. Former Evanston OC and longtime Charlie Bliss protege Ryan Healy is calling the offense for the Hawks in 2023 and the Hawks offensively looked as sharp as they have at this time of the year. Senior QB Jack Defilippis looked very sharp here and again Maine South just has an abundance of skills and backs. Maine South actually had a handful of quality quarterbacks here and again don't expect any sort of offensive overhaul anytime soon. The defense was speedy and the Hawks really are a team with impressive overall team speed. The biggest surprise to me was the HUGE offensive linemen group here for Maine South. The Hawks have a big and physical offensive line along with a very good group on the defensive line and several of the key names also happen to be underclassmen. Keep an eye on junior OT Zach Stoilov (6-foot-4, 280 pounds) and senior NG Jacob Kieta and a group of very big and very talented underclass linemen. I would expect the Hawks to get in a bit more run game tarting in 2023 and get that underclassmen line clicking.

Mount Carmel- Stacked. Yes the Caravan didn't win the 7on7 portion or the linemen challenge...and my guess is they really couldn't care less. The Caravan have a starting lineup and really a roster loaded with high level talent. Start with junior QB Jack Elliott who is just waiting for a major breakout season this fall. Elliott in alot of ways reminds me of his head coach (Jordan Lynch) when he played for the Caravan..a big, strong kid who can and will beat you with both his arm and legs. Elliott has a stable of high level backs and receivers led by senior RB Darion Dupree, senior Slotback Alonzo Manning plus senior WR Darrion Gilliam and the names just keep going and going and going. The defense has a great mix of speedy and very capable secondary kids along with depth at really every position. The breakout name to watch will be former Macomb and now MC senior DB/WR Jayden Jones (6-foot-1, 170 pounds) who made play after play as a corner then was also impressed as a receiver as well. More than one MC coach called Jones "special". The linemen group as expected has good size, number and depth and while this will be a somewhat green group in 2023 expect them to be ready for kickoff 2023. From an overall talent and depth standpoint.....in many ways this 2023 team could be as talented or even more talented than the 14-0 2022 state championship team.

Impact Player for Riverside Brookfield

Riverside Brookfield senior QB Diego Gutierrez will be a rare four year varsity starter in 2023 for the Bulldogs. Gutierrez is a talented dual threat signal caller who no question opposing team will need to game plan against this coming season. Gutierrez has the potential to be an All State caliber player this fall.

EDGY's Quick Take on the 2023 Riverside Brookfield Bulldogs:

Riverside Brookfield will play this season as an honorary member of the Southland conference for football only in 2023. .The Bulldogs in 2022 posted a 6-3 regular season record playing in the Metro Suburban Red, made the Class 6A state playoff field and lost to Kaneland in opening round action.

The biggest question facing Riverside-Brookfield in 2023? Can the Bulldogs continue it's winning ways playing a Southland conference slate against powers in Crete-Monee and Kankakee? Riverside-Brookfield has some talent back but will need to fill some holes at a handful of key positions (OL/DL) this summer. I cans ee Riverside Brookfield being in the hunt for a state playoff spot and I'll say the Bulldogs post a 5-4/4-5 type of season in 2023.
