HOT CPL Thursday Action Week 2

A love a full Thursday tilt before most are even off work!

Back of the Yards vs. Noble Golder
Noble Golder is the new Bond villain I believe. We know that the BOTY is always prominently featured in those films already. Any chance they leak out who the new Bond is?? My guess is Jaton Jackson takes over the role now that he has tremendous amounts of free time. Until we hear back on confirmation give me some BOTY.

Von Steuben vs. Mather
Ahh the Big Shoulders. In these true neighborhood match ups we should just ditch the whole concept of playing in a stadium and go straight CPL JV style in the local park. Might I suggest Eugene Park, it's quiet lovely these days and I'm sure it satisfy Ghost's thirst for a little Pumpkin Spice Latte while he's there. If this game were played on the River that would be the only place Von could squeeze in a field, I'd give it to them but until it doesn't Mather, in deed.

North Lawndale vs. Rauner
North Lawndale is running out of blue print paper because that damn Phoenix keeps lighting everything on fire. Look for them to be super confused expecting for an old man former governor to not show up. In the chaos the team team of Rauner will show up and eek one out.

Chicago Academy vs. Collins
Chicago Academy gets to host the Collins triplets on a field that has no stands is a few yards short and moving goal posts, oops nevermind that's going to lead to a CTU CPS negotiations discussion. Better avoid that one. Give me the DAWGZZZZZZ of Senn.

What brings you here?

I'll admit, I had to look that up. I can always count on learning something when either ramblinman or mwittman post.
Wanna hear something creepy about how I learned I was an ectomorph?

Back in the Middle Ages during my freshman year of college at the small liberal arts school I attended, we all had to fulfill a semester-long general Phys Ed requirement. On the second or third day of our P.E. class, the teacher (also the well-respected and long-tenured head FB coach, btw) had all the guys in our males only class remove our shirts, and he took Polaroid photos of each of us individually standing against the wall of the racquet ball court wearing only our college-issued phys ed shorts (which, being in the 1970s, were pretty darn short). He then had us study all of the photos of our classmates and classify them by body type (ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph). Yikes!

I heard about Edgy's board back when I frequented a different (and long defunct) board back in the late 90s. I'm pretty sure I started posting in 1997 or 98.

I joined because I enjoy high school sports in general, and football in particular. I would rather watch a high school game of pretty much any sport at any level than to watch the pros play. I have worked at four different private high schools, although I have been out of that part of my career path for almost 20 years.

I played football at my Catholic grammar school. I was relatively athletic, but too small then to make any real waves in the sport. My ectomorph body type was much more suited to soccer, which I played in high school and college.

Feetos Friday Upset Special.....

St. Charles North 24
Crete-Monee 17
I would not call this an upset. Crete is a young team and according to maxsprep (I know not reliable) the Stars are ranked 56 while the Warriors are 120. Not to mention the Stars playing tougher conference and have more in enrollment. I am saying Stars 35-21 over the Warriors

MMXXIV Edition - CCL-ESCC Predictions Week II

CCL/ESCC (Blue)

Brother Rice 31 (+5) Marist 27:
GOTW!!! It should be an absolute classic as well. I don't know why, but I'm quite bullish on BR this year. I'm also a buffoon so take that for what it's worth!

Mount Carmel 38 Saint Rita 20 (+21): It's a bit sad that this rivalry doesn't have that evenness that it had not too long ago. The Caravan being 0-1 really doesn't help the Ponies chances either.

Fenwick 27 (+23) Saint Ignatius 25: My upset special of the week! There's something to be said when a team has a game breaking DE.

Loyola 42 @ GW 17 (+27): Loyola gets back on track and Glenbard West gets put in a position it hasn't been in a very, very long time.

CCL/ESCC (Green)

ICP 70 (-62) Chicago Military 0:
Lousy scheduling by ICP. There are a lot of schools in their area that they can get the W while playing up a bunch of classes.

Nazareth 49 Kenwood 13 (+39): Uh oh...Naz is 2-0

Saint Francis 49 (-39) Lift for Life Academy, MO 6: Always bet on the Land of Lincoln!

CCL/ESCC (Orange)

Joliet Catholic 45 (-17) Oswego 17:
The Machine will hum

Lincoln Way Central 31 (LWC +3) Providence 24: I'm just going off performances last week.

Notre Dame 17 (-1) Sterling 7: ND better collect W's quickly. Their schedule is not conducive for success

CCL/ESCC (Purple)

Saint Viator 42 Hyde Park 0 (+45)
: The ole running of the clock

DePaul 34 Marian of the Sticks 31 (+8): DePaul in a playoff game in week 2. They have absolutely no wiggle room

Saint Patrick 33 Larkin 13 (+28): Good on the Shamrocks scheduling an 8A school. Even better that it's a game they should win.

Benet 37 Moline 24 (+18): The Red Wings get revenge for losing to Moline in the State Basketball Championship 2 years ago!

CCL/ESCC (Red)

Marmion 48 (-43) Noble Academy 0:
This is sad scheduling. Be better Marmion!

De La Salle 47 Foreman 0 (+62): De La Salle football is in a very concerning position.

Amundsen 27 Leo 18 (-14): Amundsen is a respectable CPL program.

Homewood Flossmoor 44 (-18) @ Marian of the Heights 14: Good on Heights having the balls to schedule this game considering the path to 5 for them is quite tough. Much respect!

CCL/ESCC (White)

Saint Laurence 38 Evanston 28 (+17):
Evanston being so average at best at football will never make sense to me

Montini 36 Hillcrest 6 (+33): Hillcrest is no longer the threat they were not too long ago

Carmel 49 (-34) Lake Forest 10: The have's vs the have's! The Corsairs WORK the Scouts

HOT CPL Thursday Action Week 2

Not sure how Reavis will do but King looked impressive last week. What’s up with the constant forfeits? Chicago Noble Golder vs Chicago Washington didn’t play for reasons unknown. I guess Steinmetz with almost 1.200 students couldn’t field a team last week either forfeit to DuSable. Noble DRW Trading forfeit to Collins
A load of CPL teams get the majority of players when school actually starts. I would bet those teams will play games when they have enough players with the minimum practice days completed. It's tough to understand how difficult it is for teams in the CPL until you are around the CPL. While most fans can't possibly imagine teams not practicing during the summer or lifting all year during the offseason, getting kids to participate at most schools in the city is a monstrous task.

Massey Ranking Accuracy- Week 1

Wickerpark,

Perhaps you can set up nested if/then statements for 4 columns with the 2 sets of data(predicted vs actual scores) and then do an index look up to flag the games that are outliers automatically and run the macro each week.
When I 1st saw this, I thought it was a crazy request because I didn't think I could get the predictions in batch from Massey, but then I found that he posted his formula for predictions on the site. I have not done proper QA on this, but here goes in the 25 games that differed most from predictions (combination of upsets and favored teams greatly exceeding the "spread"):

Feetos Friday Upset Special.....

Yeah, I know I'm early, but I have an early tee-time tomorrow.
Week 1 was a thriller, but no really big upsets IMO. This week should be loaded with upsets, week 2 usually is. For this week's upset we'll go out to New Lenox for a big nonconference rivalry game. This week's upset is...... The unranked and visiting Knights of Lincoln Way Central over the Edgytim ranked home team Celtics of Providence Catholic. I was hearing great things about Provi going into the season, but they dropped a close one last week to Wheaton North. On the other hand, there was not much noise about LWC this preseason, but they came out of the gate flying and put up 56 vs St. Chuck East. I see lots of points being scored Friday night, with the Knights coming out on top. Final score....... Lincoln Way Central 52 - Providence Catholic 49. That's this week's upset. What are your thoughts and who is your upset?

St Rita streaming update?

Yes. Maybe later this season. Probably beginning of next season. The LED type lights also I am hearing. But let’s just concentrate on a solid, reliable, publicly available stream before we get fancy.

And thank you for the courtesy security check.
Mc "connor stalions" Caravan is secretly doing security detail for Rita--only for this week, though. LOL!

I know, I know: MC doesn't need any extra help.

I guess Steinmetz with almost 1.200 students couldn’t field a team last week either forfeit to DuSable. Noble DRW Trading forfeit to Collins & Bogan(back in the day they could compete with anybody) forfeits to Goode. Some schools didn’t have games so I don’t understand why the grand puba who runs CPS football don’t match teams up with each other who don’t have games due to forfeits or other reasons

Week 1: EDGYTIM Underclassmen Report

Each wekk I will prepare the Underclassmen Report which is a look at which underclassmen names I saw in person at each game I cover this season. Unfortunately I did not get any roster for Loyola Academy (not my fault I tried) and also unfortunately I was not able to get any video from the Loyola ESTL game due to a camera memory card issue (sorta my fault). Ill make it up to the Loyola fans later this season.

Maine South Hawks

QB Jameson Purcell 6-foot-2, 185 pounds 2027- Was able to get some reps and work after this game was out of hand. I've been impressed with Jameson's overall game and potential for over a year plus. Purcell has an impressive arm and arm talent, already has college ready physical tools and his development wi;; be fun to watch over the next few years. Already holding multiple early D1 offers this sumemr.

RB Niko Kokosioulos 5-foot-8, 178 pounds 2026- Its another Kokosioulos! The first family of Maine South brings another speedy, strong and athletic running back who has a really nice combination of quickness and power. here. I'm guessing Niko will be the 2025 edition of Mike Dellumo for the Hawks and that's a very good thing to be next season.

DL Dean Arvanitis 6-foot-2, 228 pounds 2026- Good size and just looks like a player with some upside. I'll definitely take a look at his video later this season

LB Jake Cantal 5-foot-11, 206 pounds 2026- A name I was already familiar with before this game against LWE. Cantal has some nasty and plays pretty fast and physical. Has safety physical tools and look and I can also see him as a OLB, but also he doesn't seem to have safety size and length for now. A name to watch for sure.

LB Gavin Smith 6-foot-1, 206 pounds 2026- Brings a bit more size and length to the table and was pretty effective here in both run support and pass coverage skills. I'll definitely need to watch video for a better eval but on the hoof he passes the test as say an OLB or even ILB if he can get a bit stronger/add good weight.

DB Dan Egan 5-foot-9 178 pounds 2026- Moves pretty well, tracks the football pretty well and seems to also have good overall ball skills and can turn and flip his hips pretty naturally. Need to see more tape but my first impression of Dan was good.

Lincoln Way East Griffins

QB Jonas Williams 6-foot-3, 205 pounds 2026
Simply one of the best overall quarterbacks I've seen in my 30 plus years of covering and evaluating high school players. Williams has ideal size (6-foot-3, 205 pounds) and physical tools, plays cool and calm and just never seems to get rattled. Williams arm talent is extremely high and when refs come off the field and tell you how fast his passes are coming out of Williams hand...that's saying something. Williams is also a very strong runner in the open field, makes great decisions and his overall ability again is sky high. Committed to Oregon.

RB Brody Gish 5-foot-9, 180 pounds 2026- Came off the bench when starting RB Zion Gist was injured early in this game and made the most out of his opportunity. Gish runs hard, showed good vision and was able to wait for his blocks then attacked the open hole with a nice mix of speed and power. Very interested to see more video this season for Gish and anytime you can make an impression at East as a underclassmen...that says something.

DT Jacob Alexander 6-foot-4, 240 pounds 2026- Alexander has multiple D1 offers these days and it's pretty easy to see why. Alexander has added more good weight and size, already possessed very good speed, bend and quickness and his overall strength, hand fighting and overall motor is just very impressive. Alexander is really interesting because he has the tools to play as a very effective rush end but also looks like he can add considerable more good weight and size and stay inside and be a monster. Alexander's overall stock will continue to climb once his tape gets out in a few weeks.

DL Gage LaPere 6-foot-2, 260 pounds 2026 Solid linemen here with good overall size and ability. I'll definitely need to see more but I can see LaPere benefit playing on this very strong LWE Dline.

LB Colton Zvonar 5-foot-11, 185 pounds 2027- The youngest son of HC Rob Zvonar had a big game starting on varsity for the first time including adding a pick 6 on a nice read that Zvonar made, jumped the route inside then took the football to the house for the TD. Zvonar is again a prototypical LWE linebacker....usually anywhere from 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-11, 180 to 190 pounds and just plays fundamentally sound defense and also just tackles everything.

DB Charlie Palmer 5-foot-11, 175 pounds 2027 Again very few sophomore can crack a starting lineup at East so you better be a very strong player to get that done. Palmer has good size and speed. still has a bit of fundamentals to improve upon but the overall ability and his development over the next few years will be fun to watch.

East St. Louis Flyers

WR LaRon Baker 5-foot-11, 165 pounds 2027
- One of several speedy, twitchy athletic type of receiver for the Flyers on a team loaded with the same type of impressive athlete on the roster. No question I'll be looking to see a bit move on video at mid season and again he has a chance for big things down the line.

WR/DB Ronnie GoMiller 5-foot-9, 165 pounds 2027- Just a bit shorter compared to the rest of the underclassmen WR rotational players, but GoMiller's ability to start and cut on a dime along with his ability to go over the middle and into harms way to get the football was evident.

WR Armaad Sharp 6-foort-3, 200 pounds 2026- Big strong kid and jsut a very good looking athlete on the hoof. Physically just looks to have the ability to play a few different positions if needed. showed impressive speed and power and will seldom be brought down on initial contact.

QB Reece Shanklin 6-foot-, 175 pounds 2027 Part of a strong QB battle this summer but Shanklin is coming off the bench right now for the Flyers. I was able to see Shanklin throw this summer for Next Level and QB Coach Greg Holcomb and his arm strength, ability to make good and accurate throws along with physically being able to add much more good weight and strength over the next few years....Shanklin will no question be the next in line for East Side and a higher level name.

LB Leon Howard Jr. 6-foot-2, 225 pounds 2026 Big strong and very physical linebacker for the Flyers who is a multiple year starter as well. Howard Jr. is physical as hell at the point of attack, has a great nose for the football and just closes tackles with the best of them. Howard Jr. looks a bit strong this season but still runs and pursues to the football at a very high level/. Howard Jr. will draw a ton of looks at his early video this season.

OL Javon Donley 6-foot-5, 320 pounds 2028- Part of an incredible underclassmen group of massive offensive linemen for the Flyers. Donley did not play in this win over Loyola but the Flyers are looking to ease in and develop this incredible young giagantic group of linemen and I';m guessing you will start seeing these kids next season.

OL Antonio Grays 6-foot-7, 315 pounds 2028- Again this is a Class of 2028 kid measuring in at 6-foot-7, 325 pounds who is athletic, can move a bit and has the frame and look of a Power 4 linemen prospect already. Did not see much of any reps in this win.....but again this is another BIG part of the Flyers future.

OL Keyon Davis 6-foot-5, 310 pounds 2027- See above

OL Jerry Culberson 6-foot-7, 315 pounds 2027- See above

DL Jayden Wheeler 6-foot-2, 330 pounds 2028- Wheeler did indeed play in this win over Loyola and played well in my opinion. Wheeler has very good strength and power, was able to get past and around a big Loyola O line and was just very effective all game long. I definitely need to see a bit more from Wheeler on video but I definitely liked what I saw here.
