Impact Player for Coal City

Coal City senior RB Landon Benson (5-foot-8, 165 pounds) is a speedy and strong runner for the Coalers last season. Benson shows great vision, waits for his blocks to set up then hit the hole exceptionally fast and with power as well.

EDGY's Preseason Thoughts on the 2024 Coal City Coalers

Coal Cirty and head coach Francis Loughran is looking to improve upon the Coalers 8-3 season in 2023. Coal City head vopacvh Francis Loughran has posted a 21-11 recvord in 3 seasons and has gotten the Coalers into the IHSA state playoiffs in all three seasons at the helm.

The biggest question facing Coal City this summer?

Can the Coalers reload at a few key positions and keep winning this season? Coal City has been one of the better and most consistent overall smaller enrollment programs in the state. Coal City welcomes back 10 returning starters (5 offense 5 defense) amd oif they can fill in at a few key spots this summer (OL/LB) they have a great chance at again challenging in the Illinois Central 8 conference and also in Class 4A.

Preseason Ranking? 2024 Preseason Class 4A Top 10 poll consideration

Week 0 questions that should have stayed in my head....

Who says they are not just one year handshake agreements?
Interesting point since in past all schools got something from the inter-team scrimmage assuming they had concessions open.
Again, that assumes they are 2 years agreements.
It is all fluid and maybe we see changes as the summer/week 0 evolve.
Would you do an away week zero with your team and have no guarantee of hosting the following year?

Yes, I understand the enrollment spurring thing. But, those 180 players all come with COSTS -- academic costs, which apply to all students, and athletic costs, which apply to athletes only.

I'm a little leery of colleges that boast of huge percentages of the student body involved in athletics. Take Quincy University here in Illinois, for example. Almost 50% of their student body plays at least one sport. Is that healthy? As a sports fan, I'd say yes as a knee jerk response. The more I think of it objectively, however, what does that do in a school of about 1000 students? What kind of social dynamic is there between athletes and non-athletes? Is it really a sustainable model financially?
The school has been around for 160 years. I'd say it's pretty sustainable.😜

CS8 Predictions

Good stuff, per the usual, RocketNation.

My ultimate wish is that QND could become relevant again, in terms of product on the field, and get that QND/Rochester rivalry renewed at some point. It's a must, it's just a question of whether we'd be handing out charity or showing up to get the 2nd W in the series... as of now, it'd be charity, but the future is bright baby!
Thanks. I started following Rochester about the time they came into the CS8 from the Cornbelt. At the time, it was by no means a unanimous view that the switch was a good decision. Initially, the Rockets were the smallest school in the conference, playing mostly 5A-6A teams. QND may have an adjustment period but playing up can be an asset in the playoffs. Doesn't QND also have a chance to reschedule different teams for non-conference next year? Quincy and R-B is a tough Week 1-Week 2 start.

The Podcasts are coming.....The Podcast are coming

The Third and Leng podcast will be back this season as Matt Leng and I will talk IHSA Class 4A to Class 1A plus 8 Man Football each week.

The weekly Between The Lines [podcast with Mike Clark is also back hopingfor a first episode this Sunday..

Also we are seeking anyone with a business that would want to sponsor either or both podcast this season. Feel freer to email me edgytim@edgytim.com with any serious inquiries only please and thanks.

Bears

How the Bears have handled or picked QBs? There's a big difference. Name a QB who struggled with the Bears but then went on to be successful with another team, I'll wait.

You're claim is that the Bears can't develop QBs, but I say they just pick busts. Jury is still out on Fields, but Trubisky never started once he left the Bears, then there's guys like Orton, Grossman, and McNown. The best QB the Bears drafted in the last 40 years is Jim Harbaugh and that's just awful to admit. So you can call me a hater, but until there's proof the Bears drafted the right guy I'll hold off on being overly optimistic.

Payton was a good QB. Didn't even need the reps.

32 Passing attemps, 8 Touchdowns.

Wartburg College football roster

Big time FBS programs have football to generate media revenue.

FCS and D2 are in kind of a middle range where they are probably desperately trying to break even financially or at least not be too far in the red.

D3 programs have football programs to spur enrollment. Helping get several dozen freshmen enrolled and paying partial or full tuition is a huge boost toward enrollment stability for smaller colleges. A lot of them do decent jobs offering JV games or opportunities too because they want to keep those 30-70 freshmen feeling like they are a contributing member and they want them coming back that next year to help the school's bottom line.

Week 0 questions that should have stayed in my head....

That's very true! I can absolutely see some of these ADs even pushing to do week 0 on the road maybe for less cost and responsibility of having that event at their home school in some places. Lowering their own overhead.
And maybe if week 1 is a road game to go through prep for a road game...just spit balling.

Wartburg College football roster

Healthy from a program standpoint, for sure, but I have to wonder about the economics of this.

What must their coaching staff be like in terms of numbers?

Does it make economic sense considering...
  • Only a HANDFUL of kids who enroll in Wartburg or any private liberal arts college pay the sticker price.
  • Coaches, trainers, and other football related athletic department staff and infrastructure all must be paid.
  • The cost of equipment, travel, etc. for a squad that size.
  • No TV revenue sharing.
  • Wartburg isn't a large school with athletic revenue and expense budgets in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
I assume not all those kids travel or even dress for homes games...maybe I am wrong but I doubt they all travel.

Wartburg College football roster

Wartburg is a tremendous program and a blue print of what a well run Division 3 program should look like. The below numbers are EXTREMELY healthy.

Bad D3 programs bring in 70 freshman and by the time they are seniors only a a handful remain. To keep half is amazing and the numbers appear to be improving as well.

Freshman 59

Sophomore 56

Junior 32

Senior 28

5th Year 15

* They are probably having a varsity practice and a freshman only practice.

Week 0 scrimmages..... Are they home and home?

Does one school just lose out on the revenue?

What happens when people start scheduling them and the other school just pulls out the following year when they are on the road?

Were the summer jamborees and scrimmages not enough?

BTW Big fan of the idea but will love to hear coaches opinions in a couple years also adds to the preseason star player gets hurt week 0 but team uses it as motivation story line.

Bears

I just want to see the QB throw on time and in rhythm. The splash plays when the play breaks down aren't sustainable.

Brady, Manning, Brees, etc weren't splash QB's. They always got the offense in the right play, threw it to the right guy on time and accurate. That's winning QB play that's sustainable.

FWIW, Tyson Baegent looked great Saturday. Threw on time and accurate. 7/8 with 2 Td's. He's never gonna play under Caleb gets hurt but I greatly look forward to seeing how his nfl career plays out over the next 15 years.
Here is where Allen helps a TON, IMO. The guy just gets open and I think we will see many a slant route to Allen especially early on when teams are going to blitz like crazy on Bears.

Agree with all your points except for Bagent being in the league for a total of 17 years.
