CS8 Playoffs Thread - Done and Dusted, Just Like Maroa...

Almost no one in the U-High camp this year would've thought that this team would be favored to make it to the semifinals. The turnaround at U-High has made Brody Walworth one of the most respected coaches in the Bloomington-Normal area, and it's well deserved. The classes of '22-'24 for the Pioneers have also earned their spots of respect in the great turnaround. Outside of the obvious post season run, one of the most impressive statistics from the Pioneers is the roster, in 2021, Walworth began with 40 kids on the roster, and this year, he sits at around 95 players, with ~24 being freshmen.

Yep, he was the one who ‘unfortunately’ injured their all-state LB on a MS kickoff. No intention to injure, just a big hit and losing that LB was arguably the turning point of the game.
Actually, I think the turning point came two weeks prior when Palatine's quarterback Oles, broke his collarbone late in the game against Notre Dame.

Higher seeds should get the home game.

So would you feel better if Loyola beat Marist next week instead of this week?

Byron is different since 3A isn't seeded 1-32. I posted the 1-32 seeding for 3A and that would have had them meeting Montini in the finals, as it should have been. In that scenario Montini was seeded #14 and they would have made the finals as a 14 seed so their seed wouldn't have mattered.

Also, using Calpreps, they have 7 CPS teams in the top 32 in 5A. Does that make sense?
You have written: "Also, using CalPreps, they have 7 CPS teams in the top 32 in 5A. Does that make sense?"

Yes, it makes sense. You were apparently looking at the CalPreps rankings of the 32 teams that qualified for the 5A bracket. If 7 CPS teams qualified for the playoffs (in the 5A bracket), then CalPreps will rank those 7 teams.

For example, if you had looked at CalPrep's state-wide rankings you would have found Providence Catholic ranked 58th. You would have found Westinghouse ranked 257th. And yet, when you looked at the CalPreps playoff rankings for the 5A classification you found Westinghouse in the top 32 whereas Providence was not in the top 32. Why was that the case? For no other reason than the fact that Westinghouse qualified for the 5A playoffs and Providence did not. In the rankings you were looking at, CalPreps was only ranking the 32 teams that had qualified for the 5A playoffs.

You may note that the 7 Chicago Public League teams you referred to, were the 7 worst ranked teams out of the 32 teams shown in the rankings.

It makes perfect sense.

Bears

Agreed, as well. They spent a lot of money on the old Arlington Park property. I'm still not convinced they are serious about the alleged plan to build another stadium on the lakefront. I don't trust a word the guy says. Seems like a leverage play to me to get the property taxes lower in Arlington Heights. And, I see no scenario where the Bears get public money to help build a new stadium. There simply is no public support for that, nor will there be, regardless of who holds the governor's office.
Just wasting time....they can figure it out with the school districts and the taxes.

Higher seeds should get the home game.

Why not MaxPreps? That's what other states use. My issue with those two is we don't know what goes into their algorithm and how different aspects of the season are weighted, such as injuries.
Just so you know, MaxPreps uses the CalPreps ratings/rankings. So, if you use the MaxPreps rankings, then you are actually using the CalPreps rankings.

The above fact is easy to verify. One can go to the CalPreps website and write down the top ten teams and their ratings, and then go to the MaxPreps website and compare the two. They are identical.

Kevin Warren has completely botched the stadium situation worse than the on-field product, as crazy as that sounds.

ICE Quarterfinal Round

Du-Pec is very good. Although they play a lot of smaller schools, the NUIC is the premier small school league in the state and has been for a while. Du-Pec obviously goes as the QB goes. He is at least a 3 year starter and can do it all. They got a couple good WR too. I guess you could say that Wilmo is similar to L-W, a team that beat Du-Pec 46-22. I like Wilmo to move on here, although if they don’t play a clean game they could get knocked off. Wilmo 31-20. If Wilmo is fortunate enough to move on, they will absolutely be playing on the road at Montini. I give Princeton zero chance in that game. They sort of struggled vs a CPS team in round 2 and Montini is loaded.

Coalers have been rolling. RB has I think 10 TDs in the first 2 playoff games. I think Dixon is solid enough to make someone else beat them. They will need the passing game to make some plays, and fortunately that has been working pretty well too. I have a hunch that this will be a close game, and I’ll go with the Coalers in a nail biter 26-24.

ICE Quarterfinal Round

Both teams won in convincing fashion. The heat is turned up a little bit this week in what should be an exciting two ICE games.

3A

#2 Wilmington (11-0) @ #3 Du-Pec (10-1) - Let's dive into the schedule first. As we all know Wilmington has not really played anybody yet (unless they are just that good that no matter who they play ends up looking bad). Du-Pec lost to Lena and beat Seneca as their only two big time games. The rest of the schedule is littered with bad-average 1A schools. I'm seeing that Du-Pec is a throwing team and has a stud quarterback, which has always been a thorn in Wilmington's side. However, I think that this style of play is higher risk-reward. A lot more can go wrong with a passing offense in November than a running offense or if Wilmington is able to control the clock and play mistake free this is a very winnable game for the Cats. I like Wilma's chances here, but as I stated it won't be easy. Give me Wilmo in a low scoring clock grinding affair WHS 21 Du-Pec 14

4A

#3 Dixon (10-1) @ #7 Coal City (9-2) - This game has stood out since the brackets were released. Dixon lost by one to Byron and they have beaten an otherwise unbeaten Johnston City. I'm not sure what they bring to the table, but the fact that they lost to Byron by one tells me they are going to be tough. It's at CC so that could help a little. CC looked good the only time I saw them against Wilmo, but I don't think that will be enough to pull this one out. I like the Dukes in a close one. Dixon 35 CC 28

CC could be home again next week should they win, Wilmo has to hope for a Princeton upset of Montini to get a home game.

Man that was a big hit. It was a football play, no big deal. I would say the turning point was putting jarvis at nose. That absolutely changed everything. Also, the td at half. Could have been 7-7 going into half. Coaches were trying to sub in the taller corner and before they could call timeout they threw it up to that tall receiver.
Both of you are correct but I would have to say the turning point was the week prior against ND.

Jarvis and Skoronski both were on that team. Jarvis’ dominance on both sides was unreal, as well as the older brother of today’s Kokosoulis. Similar # of college-bound MS talent then as today, just not as elite (yet) but some with very high ceilings and they keep getting better together. MS QB Coach was that team’s starting QB, and his wisdom will be critical now.

You ignored the most important part of my post, which was the parity that exists in the NFL compared to hs football.

If the winner of the best division in the NFL plays the winner of the weakest division, the game will still be very competitive. And its because of that which makes there system of rewarding reg season success a much more accurate representation of who the best teams are compared to the IHSA model.
Even more reason to use calpreps. In a game of minor differences where home field gives +3 it should be more essential to seed the teams by who's better to ensure the best teams make it to the conference championships.

But you're getting closer. Parity exists in HS football too. Sure you look at Loyola and say they're the best based on your eye test, but their record says otherwise and so does their opponent's this week. Neither one with their losses had an argument coming in of being the best.

Bears

Here is the million $ question, who in the Bears org is most incompetent?

A. Matt Eberflus- the team looks clueless and he looks over matched

B. Ryan Poles- he picked the coach and built a roster around “difference” maker skill players with no line.

C. Kevin Warren- he announced a new stadium with no idea how to finance and no plan going forward, but the presentation looked great.

D. Virginia McCaskey- she is the owner with all the power.

Kevin Warren has completely botched the stadium situation worse than the on-field product, as crazy as that sounds.
