Calpreps ranks 5A as
1) PR
2) Morris
3) SF
4) CoM
5) JCA
6) Sycamore
7) MP
8) Naz
9) Morton
10) Mahomet Seymour

And next in are PC, Antioch, Peoria.

Perfect? No one knows. Way out of line? No. At least Calpreps follows a process. Whether that process comes to a correct conclusion can be debated, but it’s not way off base as I thought the Naz didn’t deserve a vote comment was.

Any reason? They’re the 8th best team in 5A according to Calpreps
They have no quality wins. The teams they beat had 3,4,5 and 5 losses. I get that they played a tough schedule but they got their doors blown off at home with their season on the line. Their ranking is because of their name. CalPreps is an algorithm that is giving them credit playing a tough schedule. The eye test shows they have gotten it done to a level to be receiving votes. This happens in college basketball all the times with teams like Kentucky. They play a tough schedule, lose most of the showcase matchups, struggle through conference but get one or two big wins and still are ranked before getting blown out on the first round of the NCAA tournament

And that Kentucky basketball team would still beat Dayton 9 out of 10 times. Brother Rice wasn’t a quality win for a 5A school? Calpreps lists the wins in order of quality wins under the team. So here’s the highest quality win for the Calpreps generated class 5A top ten with the national rank of their best win. Naz has 2 wins above 8 of the teams best win. I’m sorry. I’ll take the data generated from a million interlinked games.

1) PR #1435 Huntley
2) Morris #1405 Sycamore
3) SF #825 Immaculate Conception
4) CoM #1848 PC
5) JCA #1781 Marist
6) Sycamore #2363 Kaneland
7) MP #2463 Kenwood
8) Naz #693 Brother Rice, #1485 St. Ignatius
9) Morton #1644 Mahomet Seymour
10) Mahomet Seymour #2570 Highland

As an FVC homer with nothing but respect for PR, I think Naz sees a higher level of competition in their schedule and they deserve respect despite their record.

Bruce,

First off, thank you for grouping Naz football with the royalty of Kentucky Hoops. Let me remind you that the Naz train really only got rolling in the recent past, post 2000, and that the first success of a state title only arrived in 2014. Naz is a great story about current success, but they are not the blue bloods of Illinois Football, their story is probably much closer to Loyola’s recent success, at least when it comes to a historical football perspective.

With all the paragraph above, I must also mention your questioning of any votes for Naz in the AP poll did not age very well.
