It seems in four classes (7A, 5A, 4A and 2A) the bonafide contenders run four deep. In two classes (6A and 1A) the top ranked team will be a heavy favorite to win the championship. Even so, Cary-Grove and St. Ignatius are excellent teams. That leaves two classes (8A and 3A) that are wide open. The top ten teams in 8A all have a reasonable chance of coming home with the title, and several others could make it to the semifinals. Wheaton Academy (ranked 13th) is my dark horse to win the 3A championship.

Has IC petitioned up, or has someone thought that 3A might get down to their 323.5 enrollment? They still have a murder's row to finish the season = three 4-1 teams & Mac...

Who are the 4 bonafide contenders in 4A? I would say that JCA is a heavy favorite in 4A and the AP voters seem to agree as they received every first place vote.

I agree JC is the heavy favorite right now. However, I think it’s fair to say that SHG and St Francis are contenders. If Rochester drops, which now sounds possible/likely, they obviously become a contender.

while they will still be favored in 4A, I think JC would be an even bigger favorite and likely face fewer challenges if they were in 5A.

I’d agree that JCA is the favorite with SF/SHG/Rochester looking up at them.

Cahokia is a sleeper in 4A, very tough defense.
I read an article from a couple weeks ago that says they list several of the player’s position as “athlete” on their roster and it’s a pretty accurate description.
You’re certainly spot on with the defense as well. They took down a strong Marion team that averages around 50 points a game and only gave up 8 to them.
Not sure if the Comanches will get to 5 wins though. Their week 9 opponent(True Divine Word Academy) is hard to find much about. They have one of the best records in the nation over the past decade, but they’ve never played any schools I recognize before.

The top four ranked teams are all bonafide contenders. Joliet Catholic is a deserving number one, but unlike East St. Louis and Lena-Winslow I don't think they are an odds-on favorite. In other words, in my humble opinion, East St. Louis's and Lena-Winslow's chances of winning a state title are greater than 50% whereas Joliet Catholic's chance is less than 50%. If you were to give me the field in 4A, I would take it. I would not do so in 6A and 1A.

A narrow loss on the road to Rochester doesn't eliminate Sacred Heart-Griffin as a legitimate contender in my view. They have utterly dominated the other teams on their schedule.

Richmond-Burton is the defending 4A champion (albeit from two years ago) and is riding a 25-game winning streak. Admittedly that streak may end tomorrow night at Sycamore, and if they lose badly my opinion of them may change. But, for now, they deserve to be considered a bonafide contender.

St. Francis has played two pretty good teams (Lake Forest and Prospect) with mixed results. They may be on the edge of being considered bonafide, but I do see the potential. It would seem premature at this point of the season to rule them out. I suppose it has been 13 years now since St. Francis last won a state title, so it is hard to be too confident in them to win another this year. Still, Bishop McNamara and IC Catholic (multiple times) have won state championships more recently from that conference, so for now I consider St.Francis to be a legitimate contender.

While I appreciate your reasoning, I dont agree with it. Based on results so far this season, I have not seen anything to indicate that either SGH or Rochester can compete with JCA. If we look at similar opponents, Rochester was absolutely manhandled by Loyola. Loyola needed a last minute field goal to beat Fenwick. Fenwick lost to a Providence team that put JCA put a running clock on. I know that's a few degrees of seperation, but it does give an indication that those ESCC/CCL teams are playing at a different level than the teams in the CS8 this year.

St. Francis lost to Lake Forest by 17 points. A LF team that lost to a terrible COM team.

I'll admit I dont know a whole lot about Richmond-Burton, so I will see how they do vs. Sycamore

I have watched a lot of JCA football and this is the best team they have had in the last 15 years. They are ranked in the top 5, regardless of class in every poll in the state and IMO would challenge for a title at any class this year. I can't say that about the other four teams you mentioned. They have played a pretty good schedule this year and have not been challenged.

If given the choice, i would for sure take the Hilltoppers vs the field in 4A.
WIth all that being said, who knows? Thats why trophies aren't given out in September and why this board exists.

SF lost to LF on the opening weekend. That game was their awakening. They have subsequently beaten Prospect and Peoria, two solid teams both ranked in the top 10 of their respective divisions (7A/6A). They actually put pretty good beatings on those two teams. Bottom line? If the team that played LF shows up in the playoff they are one and done. If the other team shows up they are a legit threat to win 4A.

I think it depends on how well you can present your case to the powers that be, as well as, the case you have to present.
My understanding was there was 1 positive result from a test last Thursday. I would think 7 days of testing would be ample proof of no further issues assuming no further positive tests.

I agree that this is JCA's best team since their 2007 state champs. I've been impressed with how well they've played offensively without their best player (Jordan Anderson). JCA fans who watched Vinny Iannatone on the lower levels know he is very talented. He's proving it this year on varsity in Anderson's absence. They also have a true dual threat QB in Aidan Voss. He's provided a dimension that few JCA teams have had in the past, and Jake Fieldman is one of the better receivers they've had. Add a big, talented and experienced O-line and you have an offense that's as good as any Hilltopper offense I can recall.

I saw Richmond Burton play Coal City in the 4A semis in 2019. I was very impressed with them at the time. They were big and physical. The 7-point win over Plano this year gives me a bit of pause. I'm also interested in seeing how they do against Sycamore this week.

As a JCA fan, St. Francis is the team I'm most concerned with in the North of 4A. My understanding is they have a soph. at QB, who has settled in nicely. They also have the athletes to give the JCA defense some trouble. The win over Prospect is very impressive. A JCA/St. Francis matchup would be very intriguing. I'm guessing we will see it at some point in the playoffs. I'll be interested to see how St. Francis does against IC in Week 9 as well.

How tough was the Ritter game? I saw the score was pretty close.

Ritter was a team with some high end talent. Good athletes and physical. JCA took a 20-0 lead and was up 30-7 midway through the 4th quarter when Ritter scored 2 late TDS to make the final 30-20. JCA was without Anderson and got really conservative with the offense late in the game.

Hopefully you are correct. With currently 4 losses, they have to play their best ball the rest off the way.

JCA has a plethora of talent. Choose any of the top teams in the state, such as ESL, LA, or BR, and the game will be a pick em in my eyes. In addition, their All-State running back is injured. Watch some JCA games on YouTube this year because 4A is a joke for them. They have the ability to win any class.

With an ordinary JCA team, they reached the 5a finals. This is a very special one.

Size and depth would be a huge issue for JCA against a team like LA or LWE.

I simply follow what I observe on video. When JCA plays BR next week, I expect a lot of their offensive linemen to play both ways. It will be the only time they are required to do so this year. Without Anderson, they go 13-1 or 14-0, winning every game except BR by 14 points or more.

Also, the injury to the LA RBs is not taken into account by Cal Preps. They will not be making the transition from Pemberton to Maldonado like they did last year. Their back up running back, is a good player, but Maldonado is a D-1 back. With him out of the lineup, LA's offense will adjust, but it will struggle against Marist and MC.

LA struggling to score is 17-24 points instead of 30-40. They have a D-1 quarterback with good position receivers but their playmaker is out.

Hopefully you are correct. With currently 4 losses, they have to play their best ball the rest off the way.
They still have Althoff too ... don't laugh. The Crusaders lost to 5-0 St. T's and Mater Dei ... and Centralia. So the Crusaders may not suck too bad.

Next year, though ... they have some players who will finally shave at least once a week. The youngest Gomric boy, by all accounts, will pick his D1 sport. Built like his Daddy, he has the same brain for sports and is 6/2 already as a sophomore.

Size and depth would be a huge issue for JCA against a team like LA or LWE.
Huh? I would say jca matches up size wise very well well both teams. In addition, depth is not an issue this season. They do not have a single player that plays both ways. The roster is loaded with talent. One of the top running backs in the state has played very little and they haven’t missed a beat. LWE and JCA have one common opponent, Crete- Monee. JCA lead CM 33-7 and had the ball in the second half and was in complete control. LWE beat the same team 35-20. LWE and/or LA may beat JCA this year but it wouldn’t be because of the Hilltoppers lack of size or depth.

JCA'S O-Line goes:
6'2 290
6'5 260
6'2 290
5'10 310
6'4 335

Plus a 6'3 230 lb running back

D-Line
5'10 230
6'0 215
6'2 195
6'2 270
In addition to a very good sized and athletic LB crew plus a 6'1 210 lb safety that is heading to Illinois

JCA doesnt have any linemen that play both ways. Not sure why they would change personnel for Rice. As far as ive noticed, Malaci Hood is the only player who has played both ways, and that is only for a few plays here and there on offense.

There isn't a finer quarterback, running back, or wide receiver combination than the one at JCA.
The offensive line for JCA is tough and brutal. The defensive line, on the other hand, is a different story. I shouldn't make any assumptions, but as a BR supporter, I'm hoping to see their defensive line in its current form next week.

Seriously? Althoff will be 40-0 at halftime.

I may get crucified for saying this. I'm watching jca vs ritter and their level of football ain't best in state ish
🤣I only watched the first two series before switching to the Providence vs JCA game. Ritter's offense resembled that of an average CPL team.
