With both the Southwestern and Mississippi Valley beginning conference play last weekend, the rankings have become even more clear. The South Seven also continued their jumbled up league schedule. Most of the winners were expected, but some of the scores indicated larger gaps than expected. Plus some thoughts on a 4-0 Roxana team that has outscored their opponents 155-13 this fall.

Southwestern
Edwardsville(4-0) 47-14 O'Fallon(2-2): Not that they weren't already, but Edwardsville just proved to everyone that they a legit. The Tigers were the favorite here, but not by anything close to 34 points and they even had a running clock early in the fourth when they led 47-7. There's obviously a lot that went right in this one for the road team, but quarterback Jake Curry was once again the star of the show with five touchdowns(three passing, two rushing). Losing in this magnitude drops O'Fallon to fourth in my conference power rankings, but close behind third place Belleville East. Edwardsville is solidly in second place, but they are probably closer to East St. Louis than most think.
East St. Louis(2-2) 48-0 Belleville East(3-1): It won't show up in the win column, but the Lancers did keep their visit to East Side scoreless for nearly 15 minutes. The Flyers broke free to a 19-0 lead by halftime before adding four more touchdowns in the second half. Even though it started slow, this score was still as expected. Maybe East St. Louis will get more respect in this week's AP Poll though?
Belleville West(2-2) 8-7 Alton(1-3): The last two seasons, these two teams finished with a combined record of 2-16 with the only wins coming when they played each other. Both teams have looked sharper than years past already, but I still expect this one to stand as the Last Place Bowl. The script perfectly fit that theme, as Alton led 7-6 at halftime. In the fourth quarter, Belleville West was awarded a safety after the Redbirds were flagged for holding in their own end zone. Alton also committed seven turnovers on their home field. You really can't write up a worse way to lose.

Mississippi Valley
Highland(3-1) 42-7 Mascoutah(1-3): What figured as the Valley's headline matchup of week 4 delivered in the first half, as Highland only led 13-7. For those that are arithmetically challenged, that means the Bulldogs blew this open with 29 unanswered points in the final two quarters. Sophomore Blake Gelly's razor sharp accuracy played a key role in this blowout by going 13/16 for 4 passing touchdowns and 197 air yards. Over half of those yards went to Dylan Beadle, who turned 8 catches into 121 yards and 2 TD's. Highland's offense should be expected to continue raining points down against the rest of the conference. Suffering this large a defeat is cause for concern for a Mascoutah team that only has one win to their name, but a viable path to five wins is still there.
Triad(2-2) 41-21 Waterloo(1-3): This read like a borderline must-win for both teams, so the Knights should be relieved by winning in what was a 27 point game late in the fourth. No surprise in a high-scoring game like this one, but Triad quarterback Isaac Ackerman had quite a day with 248 yards passing, 123 more on the ground, and three total touchdowns.

MVC(Continued)
Jersey(2-2) 48-6 Civic Memorial(2-2): The Panthers never should have been predicted to lose, but this margin does impress me. With a deeper look at Jersey than I've given them in the past, they may be more of a threat to their mid-range league mates than initially expected. Their two losses seemed horrible at first against a usually lowly Charleston team(who is now 3-1) and 3A Roxana(who have dominated to a 4-0 start), but they've grown less sour as the fall drags on. They will head to Triad this Friday, which should be a good gauge for them. As for Civic Memorial? The rest of the season is looking like losses.

South Seven
Mt. Vernon(2-2) 33-24 Collinsville(2-2): Absolutely no doubt about it, this was the upset of week. Credit Mt. Vernon's play style for that, because they go about as old-school on offense as anyone and aren't afraid to try any trickery. Apparently they utilized their fourth starting quarterback of the season too(how many teams have done that in week four and won?). The defense and special teams helped ease that transition by producing three interceptions, a fumble, and a kickoff return for a touchdown. Stealing this game also gives the Rams critical breathing room in their pursuit of a 5A playoff berth. Collinsville should also be expected to be among the state's final 256 teams playing week 10 since their only remaining opponent bigger than 5A is winless Granite City and they only need three more victories. They will host the Warriors this week in a battle of former Southwestern Conference squads.
Marion(4-0) 55-38 Christian County, KY(1-3): Kentucky football isn't all that impressive as far as I know, but there shouldn't be too many complaints about the Wildcats dropping 55 points in a road win. Marion continues to show why they are the favorite in the South Seven title race. The door is also open for a 9-0 regular season, with their biggest remaining concern being a week 7 hosting of Collinsville. As discussed above, the Kahoks are far from invincible against the South Seven's best.

Other Notables
Althoff(3-1) loses 34-19 to St. Dominic, MO(4-0): Illinois's representative jumped ahead 13-0 after just 4 minutes and 45 seconds, but they would not score again until the fourth quarter. Missouri-power St. Dominic kept busy during that intermission, tallying all 34 of their points in the second and third quarters. This will probably cause them to fall from #3 in the AP Poll's 1A rankings, but finally being pushed will likely pay off for Althoff in the long run. Expect them to name their score this week against Marquette Catholic ahead of their week seven trip to 7A Collinsville.
Roxana(4-0) 37-0 Columbia(0-4): Something is in the air in Roxana and no I don't mean the aroma of the local oil refinery. The Shells have given up just two scores this year and both of those touchdowns came in the fourth quarter during a running clock. Not to be outshined, the offense is averaging nearly 40 points per game this season. 12 starters from last year's 7-4 campaign have been a key piece to the dominance thus far, including two running backs that topped 800 yards last fall. This year, they should finish with 8 wins fairly easily. Their chance at 9-0 is also very real, but will hinge on what they do against Breese Central in week 7. The Cougars have had a strong start of their own, winning three consecutive after falling to 5A power Highland in week one. Whoever wins that matchup should finish as champions of the Cahokia Conference's Mississippi Division. Roxana already climbed their way up to tenth in the AP's Poll for 3A, but it would be hard not to raise them if they continue their path of destruction.

Knowing the 618 Report was coming, I put together some notes about the area so that the Northerners know what the 618 is like.
'
Metro East geography and population. Using a single starting point from the end of Belleville's West Main Street to the beginning of East St. Louis' State Street at the IL 157 intersection, here is how close the schools' districts are.

Belleville West - that is the border.
Belleville East- 7 minutes.
O'Fallon - 10 minutes.
Cahokia - 5 minutes.

Belleville - 41,751 with two 7/8A public schools and a 1/2A Catholic school.
O'Fallon - 32,292 - 7A
East St. Louis - 18,195 - 5A
Cahokia - 11,912 - 4A

Then you have these communities:
Fairview Heights - 16,474 - borders East and East Side - 6 minutes from the IL 157 intersection.
Mascoutah - 8,676 - borders Belleville East and O'Fallon - 15 minutes from the IL 157 intersection.
Millstadt - 4,028 - feeds into Belleville West - 12 minutes from the IL 157 intersection.
Caseyville - 4,389 - feeds into Collinsville - 3 minutes from the IL 157 intersection.

Edwardsville - 25,218 - 7A - an outlier in Madison County borders Troy.

So when the Belleville East Boys talk, it is personal.

The total population is less than Naperville schools.
